Name: Sam Wood
Lives in: Woodthorpe, Derbyshire
Apprenticeship: Level 3 Business Management
Employer: Stephenson’s Tea and Coffee House
Training Provider: Learning Unlimited, Chesterfield College
Sam was doing his first year of A Levels (Biology, Geography and Psychology) when he decided that it wasn’t for him. He was already working part-time at Stephenson’s Tea and Coffee House when he was offered a full-time Level 2 Hospitality and Catering Apprenticeship there. He decided to accept, seeing it as a practical stepping stone to achieving his ultimate ambition of running his own café.
Sam spoke about the benefits of doing his apprenticeship: “There’s a lot more freedom with an apprenticeship. You’re in a real working environment, gaining practical experience and earning money whilst doing so.
“Another benefit for me is that I got to choose some of the training modules for my apprenticeship. This means that I could specifically tailor the training to exactly what I needed to be able to progress in my job role.”
After completing his Level 2 apprenticeship, Sam embarked on a Level 3 Business Management Apprenticeship.
Sam gave this advice to young people looking for an apprenticeship: “I was lucky to have such supportive friends and family when I was looking to do an apprenticeship, however I know that’s not always the case. If they aren’t so supportive, talk to them and make sure they are well-informed of the progress you can make from an apprenticeship.”
