Each year we offer a range of events for  secondary schools to take part in Made in Chesterfield.  Thank you to all the local businesses that are taking part in inspiring young people to consider manufacturing and engineering as a career.

All the schools in the area have been contacted with the opportunity to book onto events and activity.

The following activities are taking place in November 2017.

The secondary school element of Made in Chesterfield is co-ordinated by Derbyshire Education Business Partnership


MSE Hiller Tour

Made in Chesterfield MSE HillerTime: 9am to 12 midday
Dates: Tuesday 31 October to Friday 3 November 2017
Max 6 students aged 15 and above.

PLEASE SUPPLY STEEL TOE CAPPED BOOTS

Supplies and rents centrifuges and environmental engineering products to the water, food and other industries throughout the UK. No one in Britain is doing what they are doing. Their products and services are very much in demand.

Tour will include an opportunity to spend time in their balancing room, welding area, hydraulics centre and laboratory.


United Cast Bar Tour

Made in Chesterfield United Cast Bar TourTime: 10am – 12pm and 1pm – 3pm
Dates: Tuesday 1 to Thursday 2 and Monday 6 to Thursday 9 November 2017
Max 12 students aged 11 and above.

United Cast Bar is the home of Unibar Continuous Cast Iron, produced in two of Europe’s most prestigious foundries and distributed throughout the world. This iron bar is used in a number of industries such as Automotive and the Glass Industry to make components such as moulding tools, brake discs, pumps and compressors.


NLT Training Services Visit NLT - Made in Chesterfield

Time: 1pm to 4pm
Date: Friday 3 and Friday 10 November 2017
Maximum of 40 students on each day, plus 2 teaching staff. Students will then be split into 4 groups:
• 10 x Welding
• 10 x Mechanical
• 10 x Electrical
• 10 x Fabrication

Established 40 years ago, NLT specialise in engineering and manufacturing related subjects, serving member companies needs by acting on their behalf to recruit and train various types of apprentices.

NLT will need to know which discipline students would like to look at, welding, mechanical, electrical or fabrication and the students’ overall and boot sizes for PPE. Event will include intro, H&S, allocation of PPE (overalls and boots will be provided) and students to manufacture a product to take home.


Brampton Brewery

Brampton BreweryTime: 2pm to 3:30pm

Maximum 20 students

Come and see the Science of Brewing!

Inspired by the stories of the old Brampton Brewery that closed in the 1950’s a group of enthusiasts led by Head Brewer, Chris Radford revived the company name and opened a microbrewery in 2007. Now housing a precision malt mill and a totally new bottling plant, the brewery on Chatsworth Road is going from strength to strength.

Event will include talk about the science of brewing, show the micro brewing facility and the bottling plant. (There will be no tasting on this trip)


Barrow Hill Roundhouse

Time: 9:30am – 12pm and 12:30pm – 3pm
Date: Wednesday 8  November 2017.
Max 12 students per tour for Year 8’s.

In 2016 the Roundhouse was awarded £1.2 million by the Heritage Lottery Fund for its exciting “Moving Forward” project.

The project will allow essential renovation work to be carried out to the Roundhouse whilst retaining its unique working atmosphere. Visitor facilities will be brought up-to-date and new exhibitions will tell the story of this very special building.

As part of the event there will be a tour of the site, and lots of interactive activities within the exhibitions. There will also be a product made at the end of each session within the coach learning area.


Techman Engineering Tour

Made in Chesterfield - Tour of Techman EngineeringTime: 2pm to 3:30pm
Date: Wednesday 8  November 2017.
Max 12 students from Year 9 and above.

Manufacturer and supplier of high precision components to the oil and gas industry. They employ over 100 staff working a two shift system.

The Chesterfield factory houses 52 up to date machines for Boring, milling CNC turning and grinding, Pressure testing, Shot peening, 500t & 300t straightening presses.


IKO

Time: 10am to 11:30am
Date: Tuesday 7 November 2017

Max 8 students per tour and 2 teaching staff. Three tours offered to Year 11 upwards.

IKO Group is a global leader in the manufacture and supply of quality roofing products including shingles, commercial roofing and asphaltic and bituminous waterproofing products. They formed the new division IKO Polymeric in 2005 specifically to develop its single ply business. IKO Polymeric is now a market leader in the UK.


Penny Hydraulics Tour

Date: Tuesday 7, Wednesday 8 and Thursday 9 November 2017
Max 10 students per tour plus teaching staff

Award Winning Penny Hydraulics design, manufacture, install and service a wide range of lifting equipment.

Penny Hydraulics has its own purpose built premises housing its manufacturing and assembly plant and carries out all the functions of a fully integrated company with design, manufacturing, quality control, aftersales support and nationwide service operation.


FactoryTrans-Tronic Tour

Time: 10am to 11am
Date: Friday 3 and Friday 10 November 2017
Max 12 Year 9 and above students with an interest in physics.

Trans-Tronic was founded to manufacture transformers and coils to their customer’s requirements for the electrical and electronics industries.

The present purpose built factory employs around 45 people and produces in excess of 3.5 million components a year.

 


Precision Products UK

Story of Chesterfield - Bryan Donkin ValvesTime: 10am – 11am
Date: Tuesday 7, Wednesday 8 and Thursday 9 November 2017
Max 8 students plus teaching staff. Yearr 9 and Year 12 students.

Leading manufacturer and supplier of piston rings and metallic seals worldwide. Specialising in the design, development and manufacture of piston rings and metallic sealing rings, PPUK supplies an expert product and service to marine and industrial customers around the world.

Event will include a presentation of the company, talk by an apprentice followed by a tour and an activity.


White Rose Armoury

Time: 9am – 12pm
Date: Friday 3 November 2017
Max 30 students per 1 hour carousel.

White Rose Armoury is a manufacturer of choice for handcrafted helmets, gauntlets, back plates, breast plates, legs, arms, pauldrons and tournament helms. They are very popular for re-enactments, museums, cine or theatre costume departments.


Hardcase International Ltd

Time: 10am – 12pm
Date: Wednesday 8 November 2017
Max 10 students plus 2 teaching staff. Year 11’s upwards.

Established in 1992, Hardcase International Limited is extremely proud to remain a British manufacturer.

Designed and produced in the heart of England, they pride themselves on offering one of the world’s most highly recognised and in demand range of rigid plastic protective cases for drums and percussion instrumentation.

During the tour/visit Hardcase will demonstrate how their products are manufactured, finished and packed ready for shipment plus allow an opportunity for a hands on period where students can take part in the finishing process.


Cathelco

Time: 10am – 12pm
Date: Friday 10 November 2017
Max 15 students per tour. Year 11’s upwards

Cathelco are world leading manufacturers of equipment for ships and offshore installations. They have developed a portfolio of products which encompasses marine growth prevention systems (MGPS), hull corrosion protection systems (ICCP), reverse osmosis desalinators and ballast water treatment (BWT) systems.

Event to include 2 hour tour which will involve: factory visit, assembly process, electronics division and experimenting process, followed by a Q & A session in boardroom.


6th Form Invitation  Manufacturing and Business Seminar

Time: 8am – 10:30am
Date: Thursday 16 November 2017
Max 20 students Year 12 &13 with an interest in manufacturing, the local economy and business

A rare opportunity for 6th formers to network with local manufacturing and engineering businesses and hear from some of the foremost business leaders about the economic outlook in these key areas.


Paul Mossman Pottery

Competition open to Year 11 students that are taking GCSE Art & Design, to design a plate for the festival. Paul will pick the winner and commission the plate with the student, which will then be displayed in their school.

Paul is a creative individual who works and has worked with some of the finest and most respected designers of their age.

Over the past 40 years he has created hand thrown bespoke pottery which is made to last, from designer tableware to large scale garden pots. He has worked at Hode Pottery in Canterbury and then supplied craft shops from the Ridgeway Craft Centre for 20 years, as well as designing ceramics for Michelin starred restaurants.


Urban Flamingo

Competition open to Year 8 students, from Parkside and Dronfield Henry Fanshawe, with a keen interest in Art & Design, to design a “light up” plaque from reclaimed timber, for a festival. A winner from each school will be picked and make the plaque, with the owners, which will then be displayed in the shop and then given to their school.

Be a flamingo in a flock of pigeons!

That’s the motto of Urban Flamingo, to stand out from the crowd for all the right reasons, to be different and unusual. The gifts they make are unique, quirky and personalised, and will not be found at any high street store.

What started at the kitchen table as a hobby, Lys, (ex Parkside student), and Emma, (ex Dronfield Henry Fanshawe student), decided to make the leap into opening their own shop in Chesterfield town centre.
