Chesterfield Businesses Shine Over Olympic Opportunity
Over 80 businesses attended the latest Chesterfield Champions breakfast meeting at the B2net Stadium last Friday (18th May). The event, organised in partnership with Derbyshire Sport and Chart LSP, celebrated the launch of SHINE 2012
The morning included Liam Pitchford,England’s star Table Tennis player, who this week has been confirmed as part of the Olympic Table Tennis Team, Olympian, Ellie Koyander, Ashley Davies and special guests Martin Mansell, nine times Paralympic Medallist Swimmer.
Businesses heard about the economic impact of the London Olympics to the region. Over 25% of the £460 million of contracts won in theEast Midlandhad come to Derbyshire.
The inspirational people from Chesterfieldwho have been selected to be official torch bearers on 29th June told their story as well as the details for when the Olympic torch comes to Chesterfield. Guests also had the opportunity to pose with the 1948 Olympic Torch.
Cllr John Burrows, Vice Chair of Destination Chesterfield and Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council said “I know that many of the Chesterfield Champions were inspired by the truly amazing stories told by the young athletes and the torch bearers. It's an absolute privilege to meet these young people and to see the commitment and passion they have, something that all of us in business can admire. We're looking forward to welcoming the Olympic Torch Relay on the 29th of June and to putting on a really special day for everyone involved."
David Joy, Director of Derbyshire Sport, said: “It was fantastic to see so many businesses represented at the event and to see that there is a real interest in the 2012 Games from the business community inNorth Derbyshire.
“Through our sport and business scheme ICON many local organisations are already showing their support for local sporting stars such as Liam, Ellie and Ashley who shared some of their achievements at the event.
“I am sure that everyone who attended was inspired by their stories, and I also hope that the event and the Games will inspire workplaces to become more active, with colleagues becoming more physically active together.”
