Chesterfield’s Market Hall gets funding approval
Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet have approved the funding for the £4million refurbishment of the town’s Market Hall|.
The funding package includes £2.1 million of European and Lottery grant with the remaining money coming from the Council.
Cllr John Burrows, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council said: “The Market Hall| is a centrepiece to our market and is vital to the economic success of the town centre.
"This major refurbishment will improve the external look and the internal facilities of the building and will be a major contribution to securing the prosperity and future of the town’s market and shopping centre.”
The planning and listed building applications will be submitted in late July with consultation over the summer/autumn. Market traders who have units in the Market Hall| have been offered temporary accommodation, the main part of which will be in a temporary market hall on New Square.
Traders are expected to vacate their current stalls in January 2012. The refurbishment should begin in February 2012 and the Market Hall |is scheduled to reopen in February 2013.
