Helen’s Trust is a local charity which offers help to people in North Derbyshire with terminal illness who want to stay at home in the final stages of their illness. They offer help to people of any age, with a perceived prognosis of less than 6 months and with any terminal illness. These can include: Cancer, Motor Neurone Disease, Heart Disease, Alzheimer’s and multiple end of life conditions.
Helen’s Trust provides support to anyone living from Shirebrook to Buxton, all of Chesterfield, Hayfield down to Wirksworth, Dronfield, Eckington, Killamarsh and everywhere in between.
Their ethos is that everyone should have the opportunity and choice to die in the familiar surroundings of the home, if that is their wish. Latest research shows that 63% of people would wish to die at home, however the reality is that only 20% of people actually do.
Helen’s Trust services are free to their beneficiaries and are not means tested because they believe this can cause unnecessary delays in providing the help people need. They provide care, equipment and support and will consider requests for anything that will make the difference in enabling people’s beneficiary to stay in their own home.
The majority of their funding is from individuals, the community and local business and they value the support immensely, it is crucial to enable Helen’s Trust to continue to provide their service. They welcome partnerships with anyone who would like to work with them.
With over 15 years experience in supporting people with terminal illness at home, here are some of the things relatives have told them:
“I am grateful that my Mum was able to remain at home as she wished. I understand better now, her wish not to leave her home and I am grateful to you for your support”
Zoe Woodward, Fundraising and Business Manager at Helen’s Trust, commented:-
“I became a Champion because it is important to me to be involved with all parts of the community that we serve and to continue to work in partnership with those that we help and those that can help us. Destination Chesterfield enables great networking, the opportunity to raise awareness about our service and keep up to date with developments in the area.”
