70th Anniversary Play Season: An Evening with Gary Lineker
Part of a season of seven plays to celebrate 70 years of the Pomegranate Theatre as a civic theatre.
Please note that this is a play, and does not include an appearance by the footballer and broadcaster Gary Lineker.
It’s July 4th, 1990. In Italy, England are playing Germany in the semi-final of the World Cup. In Majorca, Bill and Monica are on holiday. Monica wants to talk about their relationship to try and save their ailing marriage. Bill just wants to watch the football. He pays little attention to his wife, who is left dreaming about running away with Gary Lineker.
Things get messy when Dan, a travel writer Monica is having an affair with, turns up. Add Dan’s friend Ian and Ian’s German travel rep friend Birgitta into the mix and you’ve got the perfect recipe for toe-curling disaster. To the accompaniment on TV of a nail-biting 90 minutes of football, followed by extra time and the infamous penalty shoot-out, the battle in Majorca reaches its inevitable, uproarious climax. Gazza might not be the only one shedding a tear or two!
Approx. running time: 2 hours (subject to change)
“Easily the funniest play in the West End and probably the funniest play in the universe”
