Heritage Open Day: Elder Yard Unitarian Chapel

One of the oldest surviving buildings in Chesterfield and oldest non-conformist chapel in Derbyshire will be open and free to explore.

“Heritage Open Days celebrates 25 years in 2019,” says HODs manager, Annabelle Thorpe, “and this year’s theme, ‘People Power’ goes to the very heart of our unique and diverse festival. We’re keen to hear stories of those who have made a positive change in their community, large or small, from crowdfunding to craftivism, street art and protest songs. And with the festival running over ten days for the first time, it’s easier than ever to get involved.”

During your visit to the Chapel you will be able to look around the building and its contents with the aid of a free information pamphlet and / or a member of the congregation.

Younger visitors will be entertained by a quiz around the building and garden

Visitors will also see poster displays on local examples of ‘People Power’ including previous members of the congregation, suffagism in Chesterfield and the Chapel’s resident singing group, the Tuneless Choir for people who lack the ability, confidence or practice to sing in tune.

No need to book in advance – people can just turn up on the day. Copies of the detailed history of the building will be available to purchase for £5.00
