Investing in Mental Health Interventions in the midst of the pandemic

Event Overview

Many UK businesses are facing absenteeism, presenteeism, reduced productivity and high staff turnover due to mental health issues. One in Five UK employees have had mental health issues due to work.

Whether your teams have been on furlough, working from home, or remained in the workplace during the pandemic, it’s been a period of change for everyone. Dealing with this level of unpredictability and uncertainty over a sustained period of time, either in or out of the workplace, can take a toll on an individual’s wellbeing. Even more so when additional factors many people are having to deal with such as loneliness, financial stress, child care and more are taken in to consideration. The price of mental ill health to a business is substantial at the best of times.

£42bn – £45bn is the estimated annual cost to UK employers due to poor mental health of employees. The biggest contribution to this increase is mental health related presenteeism, which is estimated to cost UK employers £27bn to £29bn. Presenteeism is defined as a loss in productivity from employees that come work but aren’t able to function at full capacity due to ill health.

Although the costs of mental ill health are on the rise, the good news is that so is the return on investment (ROI) in mental health interventions. Figures show that employers who invest in the mental health of their employees are seeing an average ROI of £5 for every £1 spent.
