From the club’s first match at the venue against Surrey in 1898 to the Chesterfield Festival of Cricket in 2010, Queen’s Park is a ground that Derbyshire County Cricket Club has been proud to be associated with for well over 100 years.
The people of Chesterfield have traditionally been loyal supporters of Derbyshire County Cricket Club down the years and the picturesque setting of Queen’s Park has proved to be the pinnacle when it comes to First Class out grounds on the county circuit; contributing unforgettable memories whilst continuing to play a prominent role in both the present and future of the club.
During its illustrious time hosting First Class cricket, Queen’s Park has drawn accolades from across the globe, including cricketing greats of the calibre of Sachin Tendulkar; scorer of more Test and One Day runs than anybody in the history of the game.
Of the great players to have taken to the Queen’s Park pitch with its famously fast outfield and hard track that offers assistance to both bowlers and batsmen; W.G. Grace, Don Bradman, Ian Botham and the aforementioned Tendulkar are just a short selection. The list is seemingly endless.
Although matches at Queen’s Park have always been well attended, encounters between Derbyshire and Yorkshire have traditionally proved the most popular; peaking in 1948 as a record 14,000 crammed in to the ground.
More recently, Derbyshire’s return to Chesterfield in 2006 following a break of eight years was met with unanimous approval by supporters and the signing of a new five year contract in March 2011 with the Chesterfield Borough Council secures the future of First Class cricket at Queen’s Park and ensures many more chapters are yet to be written.
