Chesterfield trained fencer reaches semi-final of Junior World Cup


Derbyshire Icon, Matthew Cooper, reached the semi-finals in the first Junior World Cup of the season last weekend meaning he is now ranked number 23 in the world junior rankings.

Matt won all of his poule fights at the competition, held in Bahrain, to be seeded number 3 in the competition which gave him an automatic bye into the last 32 where he comfortably won his direct elimination fights taking him through to the semi-final match where he faced world number 2 Jakub Jurka from Slovakia.

The result has taken Matt from number 44 in the world junior rankings to number 23. Matt remains British number 1 and will be taking part in the next junior world cup in at the end of October in Latvia where he hopes to continue improving his world ranking.

Matthew, a Dentistry student at Sheffield University and former Henry Fanshawe School pupil, fences at Wingerworth and Derbyshire Epee Academy fencing clubs, based around the Chesterfield area.

Coach Anthony Klenczar comments:-

“I am immensely proud of Matt’s achievements, it is the result of hard work over a short space of time; at eighteen years of age the future looks bright for Matt, he has set himself some tough goals for the future which I am sure he will achieve.”
