Graeme Huston Editor of Derbyshire Times

My name is Graeme Huston, I am 48 and work as the group editor for WEL Newspapers. the flagship title of our company is the Derbyshire Times but I work with the editorial teams that produce 12 newspapers and 13 websites across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

What do you like best about living in Chesterfield and why?

What I like best about working in Chesterfield is that it is a great place to be in the publishing business. It is a town and county with a strong sense of identity and there is a lot going on, from commercial activity to the arts.

What are your favourite ways to spend your free time in Derbyshire?

In my free time I like to ride a bike and its great to be based in place that offers such great roads. Along with other fundraisers I took part in the Ashgate Hospice and Derbyshire Times Flagg Challenge ride through the Peaks in 2014 and look forward to this year’s event.

Where is your favourite place to eat out locally and why?

As for eating out, I have yet to be disappointed. I do go to lunch meetings most weeks and the standard across the board has been very good from pubs to restaurants. There’s a great choice locally and it’s hard to single out one venue.

What are the positives about running a business here?

The positives of working here are all of the above, but the town does have stable governance which gives a great platform for greater success and attracting jobs and investment, which in turn leads to job creation.

How do you see the future for Chesterfield and its small businesses?

As for the future for small business in Chesterfield the Peaks Resort development is potentially very exciting and could be great news for hundreds of local suppliers. We’ll be following the news on this project closely.

If you had a magic wand, what one thing would you do to improve Chesterfield?

I don’t think Chesterfield needs a magic wand, but I would say that venue that can hold many hundreds of diners might be an excellent idea. Our business awards are growing so fast that the excellent facilities we have used so far might not be big enough in future.

What three words best sum up Chesterfield?

Three words: Pride, Industry, Culture
