Remembrance Day in Chesterfield

Chesterfield prepares to mark Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day

Chesterfield will come together to remember those who gave their lives in service as the town prepares for its annual Remembrance Sunday parade and Armistice Day ceremony in November.

The service and parade will take place on Sunday, 8th November, from 2:30 pm, starting with a service at St Mary and All Saints’ Church, known as the Crooked Spire. This will be followed by a parade through the town centre and a short ceremony at the War Memorial outside the Town Hall.

A separate ceremony to mark Armistice Day will take place outside the Town Hall on Wednesday, 11th November, from 10:55 am.

Councillor Shirley Niblock, the Mayor of Chesterfield, said:

“Remembrance Sunday is an important part of the Civic calendar, and I am proud to be leading the borough to remember those who gave so much for us all. I know our officers work with volunteer organisations across Chesterfield to ensure that members of the community can mark the occasion with the respect it deserves.”

Chesterfield’s poppy cascade returns to the Town Hall

Chesterfield’s poppy cascade will once again take pride of place on the front of Chesterfield Town Hall, providing a moving backdrop to the commemorations.

Volunteers from The Royal Engineers Association care for the cascade throughout the year, ensuring it is dry and safely stored, with any necessary repairs carried out before it is installed.

The cascade is due to be installed on the Town Hall from Monday, 2nd November, weather permitting.

Remembrance Sunday service and parade

The church service on Sunday, 8th November, is open to everyone. Those wishing to attend should arrive by 2:00 pm to take their seats, as the church can become very busy.

The service is expected to finish at around 3:00 pm, when the parade will leave St Mary and All Saints’ Church and travel along Burlington Street, High Street and Glumangate before continuing onto Rose Hill.

The parade will bring together dignitaries from across Derbyshire, members of the Armed Forces, ex-service organisations and uniformed youth organisations from Chesterfield.

At around 3:30 pm, a wreath-laying ceremony will take place at the War Memorial opposite the Town Hall on Rose Hill. The parade will be dismissed at 4:00 pm.

Armistice Day ceremony

On Wednesday, 11th November, a service will take place at the War Memorial opposite the Town Hall on Rose Hill to mark Armistice Day.

The Mayor, local dignitaries and schoolchildren will attend the ceremony, which is expected to last approximately 30 minutes. Members of the public are welcome to attend.

Road closures will be in place on both Sunday, 8th November, and Wednesday, 11th November, to allow the events to take place safely.

Remembrance services in Staveley and Brimington

Remembrance services will also take place in Staveley and Brimington on Sunday, 8th November.

Staveley Town Council will hold its annual parade and service, with the parade forming at Staveley Market Place at 10:15am before departing at 10:30am for the Garden of Remembrance. The service will begin at 10:45am.

In Brimington, the annual parade will leave the Recreation Ground on Station Road at 1:45pm before a service at St Michael and All Angels Church at 2:00pm. The parade will then continue to the Memorial Gates in Broom Gardens on Manor Road, where wreath-laying and the Last Post will take place at 3:00pm.
