All Quiet on The Western Front follows a group of German schoolboys, talked into enlisting at the beginning of World War One by their impassioned school teacher.
The story is told entirely through the experiences of the young German recruits and highlights the tragedy of war through the eyes of individuals.
Lewis Milestone’s epic screen adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s anti-war novel stars Lew Ayres as one of a group of German teenagers who enlist for World War One after hearing a stirring speech from their professor. They soon discover that war is less about noble ideas and sacrifice than it is about pain, humiliation, suffering and death.
