Public Talk – “Epilepsy in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Lizard in my Head”

Epilepsy in Sub-Saharan Africa

Amanda Grant will be presenting a public talk titled “Epilepsy in Sub-Saharan Africa: A lizard in my head” at the University of Derby Chesterfield campus.

The talk will focus on distinct and deep-rooted cultural beliefs, myths and misconceptions about epilepsy in Sub-Saharan Africa which have an astounding impact on access to health care. Following two episodes of voluntary work in a post war region of Northern Uganda, this talk will discuss the impact of culture and stigma on epilepsy care and will highlight the importance of demonstrating respect for diversity.

Epilepsy care in many areas across Africa is provided by Mental Health Services, and this talk will therefore also feature the work of the Sheffield-Gulu Mental Health Partnership.

Drinks will be available before the event.
