Bring the past to life

Brining the past to life

Bring the past to life with Wessex Archaeology and their Virtual Reality Experience and hands on archaeological activities.

This event has been organised by Chesterfield Museum and Wessex Archaeology to celebrate Derbyshire Archaeology Day which is taking place on the same day (Saturday 21 January 2023) at the Winding Wheel.

Come and have a go at a range of activities to learn more about the past and how we discover it.

Artefact Handling and Equipment Investigation

Participants will be able to handle Roman archaeological artefacts, archaeological equipment and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Staff will ask the participant questions about the items and point out features to look at more closely.

Virtual Reality Experience

Participants can experience the inside of an Iron Age roundhouse/Roman Villa/Anglo Saxon Long Barn/Medieval House in virtual reality (VR) through a VR headset.

Environmental Processing Activity

Participants will learn about environmental archaeology and have a go at sifting through small pebbles to retrieve environmental evidence (such as marine and invertebrate shell, charred plant remains and animal bone).

Please note:

  • Activities are aimed at families with children aged 6 and over, but all are welcome to come and have a chat and see what’s going on.
  • Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Tickets for the Derbyshire Archaeology Day at the Pomegranate Theatre do need to be pre-booked but this is a free drop in activity taking place in the Ballroom at the Winding Wheel.
