Action packed 1940s Market returns to Chesterfield next month

The fun-filled 1940s market returns to Chesterfield next month – with a wide range of free entertainment on offer for the whole family to enjoy.

The hugely popular event will bring 1940s music, live entertainment, classic cars and military vehicles to the heart of the town centre on Thursday 11 April between 10am and 4pm.

Visitors will also be able to see the return of the iconic replica spitfire, as the must-see attraction returns to Rykneld Square for the first time since 2021.

Street performers will take centre stage through the day, including the Kalamazoo dance band and The Daisy Belles singers – both back again this year by popular demand, alongside other entertainers.

The action-packed event is taking place alongside the weekly flea market, and as always market traders will be dressing up in 1940s outfits to try and win the competition for the best dressed stall holders.

The team from Chesterfield Museum will also be joined by staff from Up An At Em History, who will be able to share more information about life on the home front and food rationing. There will also be the opportunity to explore the era handling objects and get involved with some crafting.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “The 1940s Market is a really popular event that is enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.

“I’d definitely recommend coming along if you haven’t been before, as there is sure to be something here to entertain the whole family during half term. You could even get into the spirit and dress up in traditional 1940s outfits too!

“The event has grown to such popularity thanks to its close ties with our much-loved Thursday flea market, and people travel to Chesterfield from all over the country to take part in this unique day. With it taking place in the Easter holidays many people love to come along as a family holiday activity.”

The event is part-funded by external funding from Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF). It is just one initiative which is benefiting from funding through the UKSPF, after the council was successful in securing £2.6m. It will fund initiatives up to April 2025, which are designed to improve life for local people and support local businesses.

New Square (opposite the Portland Hotel)

• Kalamazoo Dance Band: 11am to 11.45am , 1pm to 1.45pm and 2.30pm to 3.15pm

Outside Etienne Curtains and Blinds

• The Daisy Belles (singers): 10.15am to 10:45am, 12.15pm to 12.45pm and 1.45pm to 2.15pm

Market Place

• Display of classic cars, vintage fire engine and military vehicles: 10am to 4pm
• Land Army and 1940s Mining display: 10am to 4pm
• Escape artist / glass walker: 10.45am to 11.10am, 1pm –to 1.25pm and 3pm to 3.25pm

Market Square (outside Santander)

• Natasha Harper (singer): 10.30am to 11am, 12.10pm to 12.40pm and 1.30pm to 2.00pm
• Kyle Evans (singer): 11.20am to 11.50am, 1pm to 1.30pm and 2.10pm to 2.40pm
• Shire Horses: 11am to 1pm

Pavements Shopping Centre (outside old Massarella’s Unit)

Between 10am and 4pm the team from Chesterfield Museum will be joined by Up An At Em History.

• Find out about life on the Home Front, what was on the ration and how we kept Britain fed from the gardens and kitchens of Britain
• From the Land Girls and cooks feeding the nation, find out about rationing and have a go at making some basic “mock” foods
• Plant a seed to take away
• Try your hand at milking and learn the way the Land Girls did
• Explore World War II handling objects
• Take part in crafting sessions and view exhibition panels

Rykneld Square (outside the Visitor Information Centre)

• Full size replica Spitfire: available to see between 10am and 4pm
• Jayne Darling (singer): 10am to 10.40am, 11.30am – 12.10pm and 2pm to 2.40pm
• Johnny Victory (singer): 10.45am to 11.15am, 1.10pm to 1.40pm and 3pm to 3.30pm

St. Mary and All Saints Church (Crooked Spire)

Tower Tours: 10.30am to 11.30pm and 2.30pm to 3.30pm

Tickets prices at £10 for adults, £5 for under 16s or a family ticket (two adults and two under 16s) for £20

Replica spitfire, classic cars and military vehicles to go on display at Chesterfield’s 1940s market

The 1940s market is coming back to Chesterfield this half-term, promising music, fancy dress, classic cars and plenty of family fun.

Residents and visitors are invited to flock into the town centre on 2 November 2023 from 10am to 3.30pm to sing along to 1940s music, see classic cars and military vehicles and meet market stall holders who will be dressed in 1940s clothing.

There will be street performers in the town centre throughout the event, with the Kalamazoo dance band back again by popular demand, performing in New Square.

The event is taking place alongside the weekly flea market, and as always there will be a competition for the best dressed stall holders.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, portfolio holder for the town centre and visitor economy, said: “Visitors to the market are encouraged to get into the spirit and dress-up in traditional 40s outfits where possible, although this is not essential! This is a fantastic event, and everyone is welcome to attend. There are not many events you can go along to where you can see this much free entertainment, so why not give it a try if you haven’t been before.”

The must-see attraction at this year’s event is the replica spitfire which can be seen in Rykneld Square (opposite the Visitor Information Centre) throughout the event. There will also be a display of classic cars, a vintage fire engine and a variety of other entertainment around the town centre to see including an escapologist.

Chesterfield Museum staff will also be attending with handling objects from their World War Two education box, as well as doing a make-do and mend activity with Transition Chesterfield.

Those attending the event are encouraged to use public transport to travel into Chesterfield, if possible, but there is also lots of parking available around the town centre too. Check out our guides to visiting Chesterfield.

Chesterfield 1940s market to take place this half term

Chesterfield’s 1940s Market returns during half term with entertainment and activities for the whole family to enjoy.

Taking place on Thursday 27 October between 10am and 4pm, visitors can enjoy 40s music, entertainment, exhibits and meet the stall holders in period dress.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “We’ve put together a great package of entertainment for the whole family to enjoy. Our 1940s Market gets bigger every year and I hope lots of you will come along this half term to support the event and our fantastic market traders.”

Activities

New for 2022 is a Home Guard encampment in the Crooked Spire Churchyard with reenactors ready to talk about the role of the Home Guard and demonstrate the equipment they used. At 11am and 2pm they will be putting on Drill sessions for children where kids can learn marching moves.

Chesterfield Museum will be taking over one of the units in the Pavements Centre where they will be running an activity about rationing and letting visitors engage with history using their handling objects.

They will be joined by Wessex Archaeology who will be running a workshop all day where you can design and print 1940s inspired tiles. Up an’ at ‘em History will also be here running an activity where you can learn about historic bomb disposal and have a go using some dummy World War Two bombs.

Around the Market Place there will be displays about the Land Army, historic mining, and Post Offices through the years. A selection of vintage vehicles including an historic fire engine will be on display too.

The weekly Flea Market will take place across both Market Square and New Square, with traders encouraged to get into the 40s spirit by donning period costumes. There will be prizes for the best dressed trader.

Entertainment

The ever-popular Kalamazoo Dance Band will be performing in New Square at 11am, 1pm and 2.30pm – there will be plenty of space for you to dance along.

Singing trio, The Daisy Belles will be wowing crowds Outside Etienne Curtains and Blinds at 10.15am, 12.15pm and 1.45pm.

In Rykneld Square next to the Visitor Information Centre, singer Johnny Victory will be performing at 10.45am, 1.10pm and 3pm. Singer Jayne Darling will be performing at 10am, 11.30am and 2pm.

Outside Santander singer Natasha Harper will be performing at 10.30am, 12.10pm and 1.30pm. Kyle Evans will also be singing at 11.20am, 1pm and 2.10pm.

An escape artist will perform in the Market Place at 10.45am, 1pm and 3pm.

Tours of the Crooked Spire will be taking place at 10.30am and 2.30pm. Tours cost £8 for adults and £5 for under 16s.

The 1940’s Market is a free event that aims to bring more visitors and shoppers to the town centre to support local businesses and market traders.

There is lots of parking available in Chesterfield during the event, full details of both council owned and private car parks on the car parks page.

Visitors are also being encouraged to use public transport to attend the event, options available include trains and busses.
