New bar brings local beer to Chatsworth Road

Located on the popular Chatsworth Road, The Outbreak has opened its doors, adding to the area’s growing reputation as a vibrant destination for food, drink and socialising close to our town centre.

The new independent bar, which has been open for five weeks, is owned by the former proprietor of the Real Ale Corner micropub, also located on Chatsworth Road. The bar draws inspiration from Derbyshire’s brewing heritage and a close working relationship with Eyam Brewery.

“I used to own the Real Ale Corner micropub down the other end of Chatsworth Road, and got to know Gervaise at Eyam Brewery through that,” the owner said. “The brewery taps into the plague history of Eyam, with a lot of the beers having plague-themed names. That’s where the name of the bar comes from – The Outbreak tying into the plague theme.”

With a wide selection of both cask and keg options, alongside rotating guest beers and a permanent line of Kasteel Belgian beers. The bar also offers a comprehensive wine list and a selection of spirits.

“There’s also a fantastic wine list and spirits, so something for everyone!” the owner added.

The Outbreak bar

Food plays a key role at The Outbreak, with the kitchen serving freshly made tacos and sides, making it the only venue in Chesterfield specialising in flavourful tacos. This weekend, the bar is also launching a new eating challenge.

“We’re launching an eating challenge this coming weekend – 20 minutes to complete a tray of 12 tacos and a portion of nachos,” the owner said. “Complete it within the time and it’s free, otherwise you pay for it.”

In the run-up to Christmas, The Outbreak plans to open extended hours from Friday 19th to Wednesday 24th, providing an additional option for festive food and drinks in the town.

The venue also features an upstairs space with seating for more than 35 people, which the team hopes will be used by local groups and organisations.

“Our bar has a fantastic upstairs space with seating for 35+,” the owner explained. “It’s a great place to sit and relax, but we also want to make it available to the community for local groups to use. We’re hosting the next local CAMRA meeting on the 8th Jan, for example.”

Looking ahead, The Outbreak is developing a programme of events for 2025, including Meet the Brewer evenings, tasting sessions and a monthly pub quiz.

“Overall, The Outbreak is a great informal space to come for food, local drinks and to socialise!”

Chesterfield is once again named happiest place to live in the East Midlands

Chesterfield has been ranked the happiest place to live in the East Midlands by Rightmove’s 2025 Happy at Home survey.

The annual study asks thousands of people across Great Britain how they feel about where they live. This year, more than 19,500 residents took part, sharing what truly contributes to their everyday happiness.

Rightmove found that the factors most strongly linked to a positive sense of wellbeing are the simple things that make daily life easier, safer and more enjoyable. Green spaces continue to be among the most valued features in the index, offering places to relax, exercise and connect with nature.  The study also revealed that people living close to a national park or Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty typically report higher levels of happiness.

Our town continues to stand out as a place where people feel proud to live. Many contributors said that Chesterfield gives them a strong sense of pride, belonging and community. Access to green landscapes remains particularly important, with those living near the Peak District National Park especially likely to report high levels of wellbeing.

Chesterfield, Destination Chesterfield Board Member Ryan Wilkes said:  “We’re very pleased to see Chesterfield gaining further recognition as a great place to live.”

“As a lifelong resident, it’s fantastic to see our brilliant outdoor spaces, local businesses and community spirit highlighted.

“If you’re looking to live in an area which blends a strong heritage with strong local amenities within easy reach, Chesterfield is a place that you’ll be proud to call home, and that’s without mentioning the abundance of picturesque outdoor spaces on our doorstep!”

Earlier this year, Chesterfield was also named one of the happiest places to live by The Guardian, as well as being recognised as one of the greenest towns in the UK, with over 95% of homes having access to private or nearby outdoor space, including Queens Park, Holmebrook Valley Park, and the Chesterfield Canal.  Thanks to its excellent schools, strong community spirit, and access to nature, it also consistently ranks among the best places to raise a family.

The town is seeing new housing developments and regeneration projects, including the Staveley Corridor, Chesterfield Waterside, and Spire Neighbourhood, which will bring more new homes.

Derbyshire and East Midlands showcased at World Travel Market 2025

Visit Peak District & Derbyshire and Visit Nottinghamshire will proudly exhibit together at World Travel Market (WTM) London 2025 in a dynamic partnership supported by East Midlands Airport. The collaboration aims to position the East Midlands as a world-class visitor destination.

Together, the organisations will showcase the region’s diverse tourism offer on a global stage. Moreover, this joint approach highlights the strength of regional partnerships and promotes the East Midlands to international audiences.

By joining forces, the two Local Visitor Economy Partnerships (LVEPs) aim to showcase the strengths of both counties. Specifically, Derbyshire offers stunning landscapes and rich heritage, while Nottinghamshire boasts legendary stories and a vibrant city life.

The team will be based on the UKinbound stand. It is one of the busiest and most high-profile areas at World Travel Market. From this location, they can showcase the region’s unique tourism experiences. These will be presented to international buyers, tour operators, and global media.

According to the latest 2024 STEAM (Scarborough Tourism Economic Activity Monitor) figures:

  • Derbyshire’s visitor economy was worth £3.58 billion, supporting over 33,000 jobs.

  • Nottinghamshire’s tourism sector generated £2.53 billion and supported more than 22,500 jobs.

These figures highlight tourism’s vital contribution to the East Midlands economy. Therefore, continued investment in its growth is essential.

This joint presence at WTM supports the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) in driving inclusive growth, creating skilled jobs, and fostering sustainable economic development. In particular, tourism is a key growth sector for EMCCA, with international promotion helping attract high-value visitors and increase overnight stays.

East Midlands Airport, the official sponsor of this partnership, plays a key role in providing international access to the region. Additionally, the airport is strengthening its role as a major gateway to the East Midlands through future growth plans and new direct routes.

Jo Dilley, Managing Director of Visit Peak District & Derbyshire, said:

“World Travel Market offers an unrivalled opportunity to connect with international travel trade and raise awareness of the East Midlands as a world-class visitor destination… Together, we’re showcasing the diversity and strength of our visitor offer.”

Megan Powell Vreeswijk, CEO of Marketing Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, added:

“Together with the breathtaking beauty of the Peak District and Derbyshire, we can present a powerful and unified message about the East Midlands’ world-class appeal.”

Representatives from both LVEPs and East Midlands Airport will attend the show from 3–5 November 2025 at ExCeL London. They will meet international buyers and media, promote bookable tourism products, and forge new partnerships for future growth.

Chatsworth reveals enchanting theme for Christmas 2025

Chatsworth has unveiled The Enchanted Garden as this year’s Christmas theme. The house and grounds will transform into a magical space celebrating the hidden beauty and quiet magic of the natural world.

British artists and animators have collaborated to create this immersive, multi-sensory experience. It invites visitors into a realm where the mystical spirit of the outdoors reigns.

Visitors will be able to explore 20 extraordinary spaces transformed with light, sound, and shadow play. As well as discovering towering Christmas trees and a grand cluster of mistletoe. They will also see shimmering copper toadstools and twirling oak leaf archways, each inspired by the wonders of nature.

Chatsworth Christmas theme

The adventure will begin in Chatsworth House, where a trail of light, flowers, tree silhouettes, and natural textures will lead visitors through woodland-inspired spaces. Together, these elements will create an enchanted setting that encourages connection with nature.

Award-winning mixed-reality artists Studio McGuire have crafted bespoke animations, projections, and music, enriching the experience with layers of storytelling and atmosphere. They will transform the spaces with seasonal scenes and enchanted fairies. Woodland creatures crouch in secret corners, while tiny doorways hint at pathways to hidden lands.

The experience combines treasures from the Devonshire Collections. New commissions by Peak District-based artists Winning Works, Everdenes, Wirksworth Pottery and Waney Grain complement the display. It also features majestic willow sculptures by internationally renowned artist Emma Stothard.

In the garden, visitors will discover enchanting spaces where reality and magic intertwine along an immersive light trail. Light artists Luminism have created the garden trail. It transforms some of Chatsworth’s best-loved landmarks, including the Cascade, Willow Tree Fountain, Rock Garden, Ring Pond and Maze. The journey ends with a spectacular animated light and sound projection on the house, inspired by this year’s theme and brought to life by Studio McGuire.

“The Enchanted Garden is the culmination of a year spent honouring the beauty and resilience of the natural world at Chatsworth. As winter settles in, we invite visitors to pause, explore, and celebrate the quiet magic of the season.” Said Susie Stokoe, Head of Textiles at Chatsworth. “We can’t wait for people to step into this world of wonder and renewal, and to experience Chatsworth in a new light.
