Trees planted in Staveley in memory of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

Almost 50 trees have been planted at a site in Staveley, in memory of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Local school children and tree wardens were joined by representatives from Chesterfield Borough Council to plant 48 oak trees on Darley Close at Staveley, as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy Initiative.

The Queen’s Green Canopy is a unique tree planting initiative which was launched to help mark Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022. Following the wishes of His Majesty The King, the initiative has now been extended to the end of March 2023 to give people the opportunity to plant trees throughout the planting season, in memoriam to honour Her Majesty.

The newly planted trees will help to create a new woodland in the area – called the Queen’s Copse – that will serve as a local memorial to Queen Elizabeth II.

Councillor Tricia Gilby, Leader of the Council; Councillor Amanda Serjeant, Deputy Leader of the Council; and the Mayor and Mayoress of Chesterfield were all on hand to help plant some of the first trees on the site.

People across the country – from individuals, groups, schools and communities to larger organisations and businesses – can also play their own part by coming together to plant trees – to serve as a lasting tribute to Her Majesty. Councillor Tricia Gilby, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, said: “Trees help enhance our green spaces, create habitats for wildlife and can tackle climate change by absorbing carbon emissions so I’m hoping that as many people from our local communities will join in with The Queen’s Green Canopy and plant trees across the borough.

“This initiative is not only a great way to honour Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and her extraordinary service, but it will also help increase biodiversity across our borough.”

Over time the site will be managed in a way that is sensitive to nature and biodiversity and compliments the surrounding housing and open space.

Chesterfield residents encouraged to join National Moment of Reflection

Residents across Chesterfield are invited to join a National Moment of Reflection in memory of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, being held at 8pm on Sunday 18 September.

Taking place the evening before the State Funeral at Westminster Abbey, the National Moment of Reflection will be marked by a one-minute silence.

Residents are encouraged to pause and reflect privately at home, with friends and family, out on doorsteps or their street with neighbours, or at locally arranged community events and vigils.

Councillor Tony Rogers, Mayor of Chesterfield, said: “These past few days have been full of many different emotions for the borough’s residents, and it’s important that we all have time to pause and reflect on the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who has been such a constant and positive presence in our lives for so long.

“We’re encouraging Chesterfield’s residents to stand with communities across the country to mark the National Moment of Reflection on Sunday evening, in the way they feel is most appropriate.

“This could be privately at home, on your doorsteps or out on the street with your neighbours, family, and friends, to observe the one-minute silence at 8pm.

“There are also opportunities for communities to come together at events this weekend, including a civic service at our beautiful Crooked Spire, which will also enable residents to pause and reflect on the Queen’s passing and the proclamation of our new King Charles III.”

People are reminded that they can lay tributes including flowers at the official memorial site at Queen’s Park bandstand, and Books of Condolence are available at locations across the borough:

  • Customer Service Centre, New Square, Chesterfield:
    • Monday: 9am to 2pm
    • Tuesday: 9am to 2pm
    • Wednesday: 10am to 2pm
    • Thursday: 9am to 2pm
    • Friday: 9am to 2pm
  • Healthy Living Centre, Staveley – open Monday to Friday from 6.30am to 10pm and Saturday and Sunday from 8am to 6pm
  • Queen’s Park Sports Centre – open Monday to Friday from 6.30am to 10pm and Saturday and Sunday from 8am to 8pm.

The Books of Condolence at council venues will remain open until Tuesday 20 September and then will be preserved in our local archives (please note that the Books will not be available to sign on the day of the funeral, as the venues will be closed).

Residents can also pay tribute at other local events this weekend, including:

  • A civic service for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will take place this Saturday, 17 September, at the Church of St. Mary and All Saints (the Crooked Spire). The service is open for all to attend and will start at 2.30pm.
  • A planned performance by Ashover Brass Band will go ahead at Queen’s Park Bandstand on Sunday 18 September, from 2pm to 4pm. The programme has been altered to pay tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Everyone is welcome to attend, and floral tributes can still be laid and viewed in the area on the day.

Chesterfield leaders and businesses pay tribute to Queen Elizabeth II

Tributes and condolences have been paid by leaders and businesses in Chesterfield and Derbyshire, following the passing of HM The Queen.

The Union Flag is flying at half-mast on Chesterfield Town Hall to mark the period of national mourning for Queen Elizabeth II.

Destination Chesterfield Chair, Peter Swallow commented: “I was very saddened to hear the news about Her Majesty the Queen’s passing. Although she was 96 years of age her death has still come as a complete shock. She has led the nation for 70 years, ever present for the whole of my lifetime, and a steadfast presence throughout the country’s highs and lows.

“She was a memorable individual with her visit to Chesterfield in 1977 still remaining strong in the memory of many residents in the town. Whether a supporter of the royal family or not, few can disagree that she was dedicated to her role, and the country as a whole, throughout her reign. She will be sadly missed, and may she rest in peace.”

Councillor Tony Rogers, Mayor of Chesterfield, said: “Like many others, I find the news of the Queen’s death difficult to take in because she is someone who has always remained a constant in our lives.

“Throughout her reign, the Queen has shown an immense interest in all aspects of public life and has visited every part of the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and other places in the world. We well-remember her visits to Chesterfield including in 1977 for the Silver Jubilee, in 1985 to open the Royal Hospital and in 2003 when she visited Chesterfield Market.

“I am sure people in Chesterfield will unite to remember all she has meant to us during her long life and during her reign as our Queen.”

Councillor Tricia Gilby, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, said: “It is with great sadness that I learned of the death of Her Majesty The Queen.

“Since coming to the throne at the young age of 25, she has shown an immense dedication to her role as our Queen as well as being a wife and mother and later a much-loved grandmother and great grandmother. Our thoughts go to the Royal Family at this sad time.”

Huw Bowen, Chesterfield Borough Council’s chief executive, said: “The Queen always played a full part in public life and it is right and proper that we mark her passing. The flag at the Town Hall is flying at half-mast and we will also be opening books of condolence for people to express their sadness at her loss.

“We have lost a public figure whose experience is unparalleled, and I hope people will come together to celebrate her life as well as mourn her death.”

East Midlands Chamber chief executive Scott Knowles said: “We are deeply saddened to learn of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s passing today.

“The Queen has been the epitome of stability and patriotism throughout her seven decades of unwavering public service, an icon who has symbolised British patriotism across the world.

“As patron of the British Chambers of Commerce, she was a true friend to the business community and as the figurehead of the Commonwealth, she was the tie between nations that have become important trading partners.

“It is with great sorrow that we must now come to terms with a Great Britain without our Queen, but she has already demonstrated to us on so many occasions the strength we will need to move forward.”
