Barlow Carnival is an amazing event steeped in tradition which takes place every year. This year, enjoy five days of entertainment coming from Wednesday 12th – Sunday 16th August.

Barlow Carnival returns this August with five days of entertainment and community spirit.
As one of Derbyshire’s most loved village traditions, the carnival offers a vibrant programme of events for all ages, from classic celebrations to family‑friendly activities and live entertainment.
Wednesday 12th August – Blessing of the Wells
Kick off Carnival Week with this historic Derbyshire tradition.
The wells are located on Hackney Lane (outside The Peacock), Millcross Lane, outside the Village Hall, and Valley Rise opposite The Tickled Trout.
Church service at 6:30pm, followed by a village procession and maypole dancing.
Friday 14th August – Open Air Cinema
A relaxed evening under the stars at Barlow Recreation Ground showing The Lion King (live action). Follow Simba’s epic journey from playful cub to rightful king, featuring stunning visuals, iconic songs, and beloved characters.
- Gates Open: 6:30pm
- Film Starts: Approximately 8:30pm (subject to light levels and weather conditions)
- Please arrive early and be seated by 8:00pm, as the screening may begin earlier if conditions allow.
- A range of hot food, snacks, sweets and drinks will be available to purchase throughout the evening, along with a fully stocked licensed bar.
- Please note, seating is not provided. It is recommended to bring camping chairs, blankets and suitable clothing for an outdoor event.
- The outdoor screening will go ahead in most weather conditions. Please check the forecast and dress appropriately for the evening.

Saturday 15th August – Carnival Day
One of the highlights of the week.
- A colourful procession featuring floats, performers, and community groups that leaves from Springfield Road at 1pm and makes its way through the village.
- Live entertainment, funfair, food and craft stalls, classic cars, games, and competitions.
- It’s one of the most photographed and well‑attended moments of the entire Carnival.
Saturday 15th August – Rock the Carnival (from 7pm onwards)
Wrapping up Carnival Day in unforgettable style with Rock the Carnival, taking over the Recreation Ground on the evening of Saturday 15th August.
Taking to the stage are Chesterfield’s own Take The Seven, bringing their own distinctive rock sound and high-energy performance.
Joining them is Carnival favourite, Atomic, delivering the ultimate tribute to the iconic hits of the 1980s.
- This is a separate event to Carnival Day and a ticket is required to stay on the field after 7pm
- Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult
- Hot food vendors and a licensed bar will be available throughout the evening.
Sunday 16th August – Family Fun Day
It’s a relaxed, family‑focused finale packed with entertainment for all ages. The day will feature a dog show at 10am in support of Guide Dogs, a lively kids’ entertainer, and the Heeley City Farm roadshow bringing a taste of the countryside to you.
Get involved in the old‑school sports day, with fun races for both adults and children, all in support of Ashgate Hospice.
Enjoy a great selection of food vendors throughout the day, alongside a licensed bar for refreshments.
