Ashgate Hospice to launch 1st ever Superhero Night Walk at Queen’s Park

Ashgate Hospice is set to host a brand-new event in Chesterfield, with participants encouraged to wear their capes, masks and facepaint for the first-ever Superhero Night Walk.

The event is being launched following the success of this year’s Sparkle Night Walk, which saw more than 3,000 people take on the 10-kilometre course around Chesterfield in memory of their loved ones.

Ashgate’s new Superhero Night Walk will take place in Queen’s Park, Chesterfield on Saturday 14th October, and provides youngsters with the chance to raise vital funds for the hospice.

Tickets cost just £5.50 per child and adults go free. The walk will start at 6:30 pm with doors opening from 4:30pm.

Among the hundreds of participants expected to take part in this year’s event are Molly, (10), Theo, (6) Jesse, (5), and Noah, (4) – who are walking in memory of their Nannan Linda Ellison, who passed away at the hospice in October last year, aged 65.

Linda’s daughter, and Jesse’s Mum, Liz Riley from Killamarsh, said: “Mum’s life was dedicated to her four grandchildren, she idolised them and helped to care for them since they were babies. The grandchildren adored Mum. She would always spoil them with treats and give them lots of kisses and cuddles.

“Having never been to the hospice before, she was worried that it wouldn’t be suitable for them. But she was relieved to find out that they had lots of family rooms that we could use so we could keep the kids entertained whilst they were visiting their Nannan.”

“The grandchildren miss their Nannan so much. That’s why they’ve decided to take on the Superhero Night Walk together and do something positive to remember her by.

“The date of the walk will be very close to the first anniversary of Mum’s death, so it’s going to be a special event for the whole family to get together.

“They’ve raised over £350 already which is amazing, and they’re aiming to raise even more so that more people like their Nannan can receive care from the hospice.”

Every participating child will receive a fundraising pack, superhero cape and a glow in the dark mask to wear whilst taking part in the event.

Volunteers required for the 2022 Redbrik Foundation Chesterfield 10k

A call has been issued for volunteer marshals, to help at this year’s Chesterfield 10k. The Redbrik Foundation Chesterfield 10k takes place on Sunday 16^th October, beginning from 10am at Queen’s Park.

Volunteer marshals will help to play a key role in the success of the event and will be stationed at various points around the 10k course, assisting and supporting participants, residents, and spectators.

John Timms, Event Director, said: “The Chesterfield 10k wouldn’t be possible without the help of our volunteer marshals, and we’re eager to make this year’s 10k memorable whilst supporting the local charities; Ashgate Hospice, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and The Redbrik Foundation.

“We are calling on volunteers to support the runners, cheer them on and get them around the course safely.

“The 10k truly is a community event, and volunteering is a great way to get involved without running the race itself. If you’ve got family and friends taking part, or if you’d simply like to get involved on the day, signing up to be a marshal is a great way to support the charities that provide extremely valuable services.”

James Branson, Senior Events Fundraiser at Ashgate Hospice, said: “Runners and spectators at the 10k last year all say how the atmosphere was fantastic, largely thanks to the support and enthusiasm of all our volunteers.

“If you can spare a few hours, it’s such a rewarding experience to witness the determination of the runners, as well as the amazing community spirit of the supporting locals.

“Marshalling is very straightforward, and you don’t need any experience. All volunteers are well looked after before and during the race.”

Chesterfield’s Tapton Lock Festival announces exciting 10th anniversary plans

It has been revealed that Chesterfield’s Tapton Lock Festival is set for a return this September, with exciting plans in place to mark its 10th anniversary.

Over the weekend on the 10th and 11th September, the banks of the Chesterfield Canal will come alive with outdoor theatre, music and dance, arts and crafts workshops, stalls, a climbing wall, ‘’have a go’ canoes, boat rides and much more.

To mark this special birthday, organisers Junction Arts and Derbyshire County Council’s Countryside Service have invited the Chesterfield BME Forum to showcase a number of special multi-cultural performances.

More information will follow, but the team has already confirmed that on Saturday 10^thSeptember a performance of Ukranian music and dance by the Hoverla Dance Ensemble will take place, meanwhile visitors can enjoy a spectacular Chinese Lion Dance on Sunday 11^th September.

Jane Wells, Project Coordinator at Junction Arts commented: “We’re absolutely thrilled! This is a huge milestone for us, to have been able to make the festival happen for 10 years is such an achievement and we feel really proud. We have to work very hard all year round to fundraise for the event as it’s our number one priority that the festival is free, so that no one is excluded from attending on financial grounds. We want this to be a festival for everyone to enjoy.”

Speaking on the range of multicultural performances taking place at this year’s event, Jane stressed how important it was for the festival to be inclusive of people from all backgrounds: “The festival is well attended but we noticed that our visitor demographic wasn’t representative of the cultural mix of Chesterfield and surrounding area.

“As a first step, we invited members of the Chesterfield BME Forum to have a stand at last year’s festival and it proved to be really successful. The 10^th Anniversary seemed to be the perfect moment to do more so we applied to the National Lottery for funding and were successful. The grant will support four local groups to attend and showcase their cultures, including some incredible music and dance performances, amazing food tasting from around the world plus displays and information. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the National Lottery players for their support.

Jane also commented on why bringing the community together in celebration was of high importance to the charity: “The mainstay of our work is to build stronger communities through the arts and The Tapton Lock Festival does this in bucket loads! We deliver the event in partnership with DCC Countryside Service and the aim of the festival is to raise awareness of the area along the Chesterfield Canal and the network or footpaths and cycleways to encourage people to spend more time in nature with family and friends becoming healthier and happier.

“Another way the festival brings communities together is through the school outreach we do. Each year we work with a local school, this year St Mary’s Catholic Primary School. The year 5 pupils visited the canal last week to learn all about the flora and fauna of the canal with a countryside ranger, they also had a boat ride!

“In September, Junction Arts will go into school and work with the children to create artwork that will be displayed at the festival. So, I hope you can see how the festival brings people of all ages and from all backgrounds together, to celebrate this beautiful part of town in a safe, inspiring and creative environment.”

The event takes place around the Tapton Lock Visitor Centre from 11:00am until 4.00pm on both days and entry to the festival is free. Find out more here.
