Derbyshire’s largest careers event is heading to Chesterfield

There is just over a week to go until Chesterfield hosts this year’s Derbyshire Skills Festival − the county’s largest careers event.

The event is organised by Derbyshire County Council and is aimed at students aged 15 to 19, including those in year 11 who are considering their options after school.

This year it is being held at Queen’s Park Sports Centre on Thursday 14 September. The event is free and will open from 3.30pm to 8pm.

More than 30 employers, colleges, training providers and voluntary organisations will be at the events offering the support and guidance needed to help make future career choices − all under one roof.

There will also be ‘have-a-go’ activities for young people to test their skills and get first-hand experience of engineering, media and hair and beauty.

Councillor Alex Dale, Cabinet Member for Young People  at Derbyshire County Council, said:-

“There is going to be a fantastic range of education and training providers for young people to talk to at this year’s Derbyshire Skills Festival.

“Deciding which career to take is one of the biggest decisions a young person will make so it’s important that they look at every option that’s available to them and the festival is the perfect place to do this.

There will also be sessions for young people with special educational needs and disabilities and young people who are not in education, employment or training will also be invited.

Chesterfield Champions join forces to support Macmillan

For the third successive year, BRM Solicitors has joined forces with Macmillan Cancer Support to exclusively offer a free will writing service during September and October to support Macmillan in Chesterfield.

Including Gift Aid donations, the Chesterfield law firm has so far raised over £30,000 for the Macmillan appeal to help build the NGS Macmillan Unit Appeal, at Chesterfield Royal Hospital. With the centre now open, the firm is continuing its support by getting behind Macmillan’s ongoing work in the region to provide better cancer care.

Over the two months, BRM Solicitors will waive its fees, and instead will encourage clients to make a voluntary donation of £75 per single will and £150 per double will to the Chesterfield Royal Macmillan Cancer Centre.

Over the next few years, Macmillan will be investing a significant amount of money to fund new projects and health professionals at Chesterfield Royal Hospital and elsewhere in Derbyshire. For example,  funding the Welfare Rights Service at the new NGS Macmillan Unit.

Sheffield City Region calls for ideas for £15m cultural fund

World-leading creative and innovative projects which can tap into a new £15million cultural regeneration fund are being called for by the Sheffield City Region (SCR).

The SCR’S business arm, the Local Enterprise Partnership, today put out a ‘call’ for proposals to access the Northern Cultural Regeneration Fund and help build a lasting regional legacy from the Great Exhibition of the North next year.

The fund will make grants of up to £4 million for major cultural and tech projects to be included in next year’s exhibition, helping pave the way for future investment in the Northern Powerhouse.

The Great Exhibition, in Newcastle from next June to September, is set to be the biggest event in England in 2018. It will showcase world-class art, culture, design and innovation from the North.

It will demonstrate to the world how the North of England’s great art and culture, design and innovation has shaped our lives and is building the economy of tomorrow.

The Local Enterprise Partnership has been asked by the Government to co-ordinate proposals locally.

Sir Nigel Knowles, Chair of the Local Enterprise Partnership said:-

“This fund can make a huge contribution to the cultural and creative offer of the City Region.

“We’re a region blessed with outstanding creative and cultural talent and are quite rightly recognised for the contribution this sector makes to the economy and our communities.

“But we’re also a city region that doesn’t have some of the iconic physical cultural and creative assets that other parts of the country boast – which means the talent and the opportunity that abounds here don’t always play as central a role as they could do.

“This fund can help us develop some of those assets. We’re entirely open to ideas from across the city region – and the LEP Board looks forward to considering the proposals that come forward”.

“The North is a cultural powerhouse, as well an economic one, and this £15 million fund will give a boost to the region’s vibrant culture and tech sectors.”

Chasing Markham Banger Rally tests wit and stamina to raise money for charity

bilstein group’s amazing Banger Rally, raising money for the charity BEN, will cross the finish line at their brand new state of the art warehouse in Markham Vale on 22nd September 2017.

The banger rally starts at the company’s site in Marden, Kent, travelling across 10 different countries in 7 days, to finish at the new distribution hub at Markham Vale. 21 teams will battle it out to win points and be crowned the Chasing Markham Champions.

The route encompasses some of the most difficult and also most beautiful roads to drive in Europe, including the Stelvio Pass, Grossglockner Pass and Hahntenhoch Pass, finishing with the Butter Tubs pass in the Yorkshire Dales before heading down to Markham Vale and across the line.

Planning the Rally, the company decided they wanted to give something back to the industry that has helped their growth over the years. BEN is an automotive industry charity offering help and support to anyone who works in the automotive industry, from workshops to car manufacturers and the aftermarket suppliers.

Each team taking part has had to raise £1,000 each for the charity in order to go on the adventure, and the company will be auctioning the cars after the Rally to increase the final total. Creative collaboration of Chesterfield businesses

Clare Gage, multi-award winning Chesterfield based artist has teamed up with Chesterfield Champions, StraightCurves, to bring pottery courses to Chesterfield.

Clare Gage is a Chesterfield based artist who has celebrated her life-long love of textiles with ceramics by creating a truly unique collection of porcelain and jewellery. Clare is respected in the world of design, having won numerous awards for her work and seeing her designs featured in many great design magazines.

With interest in pottery growing in recent years due to a resurgence in traditional craft skills and TV programs such as The Great Pottery Throw Down, the collaboration between Clare and StraightCurves couldn’t have come at a better time.

Clare says:-

‘I love encouraging people to play with clay. I grew up going to pottery classes and it’s fabulous to be able to teach others. I like to create a relaxed, enjoyable atmosphere where your creative ideas can take shape.’

StraightCurves was set up in 2013 by Karen Rogers, a fully qualified and experienced designer and secondary school teacher/adult education tutor, who is passionate about creativity and learning. She firmly believes that anyone can be creative, and StraightCurves offers a range of high-quality workshops and courses for adults and children in a variety of techniques based at their studio building on Saltergate, Chesterfield.

Sunday 1st October will see the return of the hugely popular ‘Local Producers’ Market’ at Dronfield Hall Barn.

Founded by personal trainer, nutritionist and founder of Real Food Function, Jon Hodgkinson, the ‘Local Producers’ Market’ is a must-visit event for food and drink lovers everywhere.

Chesterfield businesses invited to take part in graduate recruitment programme

Small to medium Chesterfield businesses are being invited to access expert help to attract, select, recruit and train graduates through a city region-wide funded scheme.

The Sheffield City Region RISE graduate recruitment programme is delivered in partnership with the SCR Growth Hub, University of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University and the private sector.

It aims to connect growing businesses with ambitious graduates – and take the hassle out of recruitment. Local organisations that have been involved in the project to date include Chesterfield Champions Casa Hotel and Global Brands.

Kylie Cook, RISE Project Manager, said:-

“RISE has had a fantastic year so far, supporting more than 50 businesses to take on graduates across the region. We work with all sectors and disciplines, and are excited to hear from more SMEs who want to join the final round of 2017. From digital marketing to design engineering, there’s not many roles we haven’t helped to fill in the past.”

Business can participate in RISE, whether they want to appoint a graduate to a six month internship or a permanent post with a six-month probationary period. The only eligibility criteria is that they have less than 250 employees and are based in the Sheffield City Region.

The organisation must commit to an excellent induction, management support, salary and appraisal package. In return, they can access a fully-funded recruitment programme to help manage the process and ensure the best possible result for both employer and employee – plus there’s a £1,000 wage subsidy available.

Local community takes part in archaeological dig at Chesterfield Canal

Over 500 people from the local community joined the Chesterfield Canal Trust and a number of archaeologists to take part in the Last Cuckoo Project.

At the beginning of the year it was reported that the Chesterfield Canal Trust acquired funding from the Aviva Community Trust of £10,000 for the Last Cuckoo Project – an archaeological dig at Staveley – where it is believed that at least one Cuckoo boat, unique to the canal, could be found.

The dig, which took place over two weeks in August, unearthed a variety of material including pottery and bottles and – as expected – three boats, one which has been reported as almost certainly a Cuckoo.

The dig has received enormous community support. The funding for the project was made possible by the project gaining 9,500 votes in a public vote. The public support continued with over 500 places on the dig being snapped up by members of the community – including a number of local children.

To celebrate the findings, the Trust organised an open day, which was also well attended with over 300 people being given a guided tour of the trenches and the teams findings. The dig also gained regional coverage with a feature on BBC Look North.

As the project was an archaelogical dig and not a restoration project the findings where reburied. However the Canal Trust will be working hard to ensure that the findings are remembered.

Rod Auton, a representative from the Chesterfield Canal Trust, said:-

“There was never any possibility of lifting an incredibly fragile 70’ boat, then storing and preserving it, so everything was reburied at the end of the dig. When the restoration of the Canal reaches a certain point, they will be dug up again because there will be moorings on the site.

“However, part of the grant has been reserved to create an information board on the site, so that the whole event will be remembered in the time being.”

The Trust wishes to pay particular thanks to Mark Walker for his months of planning on the project, Elmet Archaeological Services – led by Christine Rawson – who had vast experience of community archaeology, T.C. Harrison/JCB who lent the Trust a mini-digger for the whole fortnight and Henry and Lorraine Day who allowed the Trust to use their field for camping, car parking and accommodation facilities.

New hashtag campaign to highlight the Peak District’s hidden gems

Social media users are being invited to share their stunning shots of what they think is unique and inspiring about the Peak District and Derbyshire in a new hashtag campaign aiming to spread the word about its most special and secret gems.

Marketing Peak District & Derbyshire, the area’s official tourist board, is about to launch #UniqueDistrict in a bid to promote the essence and spirit of the area with the help of the expanding online community.

Lindsay Rae, the tourist board’s Deputy Director, said:-

“We’re asking people to post images of their favourite features of the Peak District and Derbyshire – everything from breathtaking landscapes and fabulous attractions to their favourite cafés and restaurants serving locally-sourced food and drink.

“We’re looking for special shots that inspire them and will inspire other people too – and they can feature any subject, as long as it captures what’s best and beautiful about the area.

“We know the Peak District and Derbyshire is full of hidden treasures, and this is a brilliant opportunity to share them across the growing on-line audience.

“We’ll be posting the best entries across our Instagram and Twitter accounts, and there’ll be quality prizes on offer in a series of competitions from September to the beginning of November.”

#UniqueDistrict will be launched on the tourist board’s Twitter feed – @vpdd – on Friday September 1 at 1pm, when a video outlining full details of how to enter and details of the first prize give-away will be released.

After that, people can tweet their images, using @vpdd and #UniqueDistrict, and their submissions will go forward as competition entries until November 1. #UniqueDistrict will then continue to run for another ten months to encourage even more people to join the online conversation.

The video will become the campaign’s ‘pinned’ tweet and will stay at the top of the @vpdd Twitter page throughout September. It will also be posted on the tourist board’s website at www.visitpeakdistrict.com.

Working with education to improve employability of ‘leavers’

Companies are being asked to what extent they want to work with schools to improve employability of ‘leavers’.

The lack of basic skills demonstrated by ‘leavers’ but demanded by employers is a perennial complaint of recruiters.

But little has been done over the years to ensure young people have even the basic skills required by potential employees, including maths, English and the ability to communicate on the phone and solve simple problems.

In its Quarterly Economic Survey for the third quarter of 2017, East Midlands Chamber is asking firms about their experiences of trying to engage with schools for work experience, mentoring, work placements for pupils and teachers and more.

Launched today on the 21 August, the latest survey asks firms in what ways they would consider engaging with schools, from having staff who are school governors, to taking part in careers fairs, participating in classroom-based teaching activities, offering interview training and more.

Chris Hobson, Director of Policy at the Chamber, said:-

“Our survey results for the second quarter of 2017 revealed that two-thirds of firms wanted to recruit new workers but two-thirds of those companies struggled to find suitably skilled staff.

“This has been a problem identified by employers for surveys going back a long, long time. It has gained higher profile in recent years but we want to do is see if there has been any success in closing the skills gap and what levels of engagement employers feel they need to make sure youngsters leaving education have the skills they seek.”

Chamber strategic partner bmi regional is offering two return flights from Birmingham to Nuremburg as a draw prize for completing the Q3 QES. The winners will be advised on 14 September and the tickets will be valid until 31 March.

Earlier this year, bmi regional created a new hub at Birmingham Airport, launching three new European routes from the UK’s second city to Graz, Gothenburg and Nuremberg, to provide improved connectivity to and from the East Midlands.
