Top Hats and Tiaras as Champions ‘Dress-Up’ For Master Cutler’s Challenge

This month, it was Top Hats and Tiaras at Chesterfield Champions Shorts, when they held a ‘dress-up day’ in support of the Master Cutler’s Challenge.

The Master and Mistress Cutler (Nicholas and Liz Cragg) try to visit as many participating companies as possible during the duration of the challenge, and Shorts were delighted when he chose to visit both of their offices along with Jack Kidder, Corporate Fundraising Manager at St. Luke’s and had the opportunity to speak to many of the team about the challenge and the charities who benefit from the funds raised.

Andy Irvine commented “We’ve been taking part in weekly dress down Fridays, but it was one of our tax team, who came up with the suggestion that we organise a ‘dress-up’ day for a change – something a bit different.  This seemed a great idea and we were delighted that so many of the team got on board with the idea.  The weather this week has been absolutely appalling, so we were especially delighted that so many people made the effort to make their way into work in all their finery.”

Jack Kidder added “Having spoken to a number of the teams taking part in this year’s challenge, there are as always, a wide variety of interesting and fun events taking place.  It’s great to see such enthusiasm, and originality from this year’s participators, and in all my years in fundraising, I haven’t come across anyone doing a dress-up day before.  We thoroughly enjoyed visiting both of Shorts’ offices and it was fantastic to see so many people taking part.”

There were a variety of outfits worn during the day, from evening dresses to black tie and dinner jackets, with tiaras, crowns and plenty of jewels.   A competition was held, and a bottle of champagne awarded to the ‘best dressed’ in both offices, with Margaret McPhail and Alexandra Robinson taking the titles.

The Master Cutler’s Challenge is now in its 12th year, and this year’s chosen primary charities are St Luke’s Hospice in Sheffield and Rotherham Hospice.  Businesses across the Sheffield City Region are invited to raise as much as possible in fundraising for the two charities, and Shorts have already been busy, raising over £2,900 with a 13-mile sponsored walk, dress down Fridays, monthly cake sales and a variety of office sweepstakes and Last Man Standing competitions.

Which are the best Peak District and Derbyshire Tourism Businesses?

Businesses that represent the best of the area’s tourism industry are set to be showcased and celebrated in the newly-launched Peak District & Derbyshire Tourism Awards.

Organised by Marketing Peak District & Derbyshire, the area’s official tourist board, the awards will recognise excellence and outstanding achievement in the Peak District and Derbyshire’s valuable tourism sector, which is worth over £2.15 billion, attracts 40.45 million visitors each year and supports over 28,000 jobs.

Nominations are open from 17th June to 4th August 2019, with local businesses encouraged to enter in 11 categories that celebrate different aspects of the visitor economy – from amazing visitor attractions and great accommodation providers to traditional pubs and unique experiences.

Winners from each category will automatically be put forward into the national VisitEngland Awards for Excellence 2020, which represent the highest accolades in English tourism.

Supported by the University of Derby and the European Regional Development Fund, awards include ‘Hotel of the Year’, ‘Self Catering Accommodation of the Year’, ‘Pub of the Year’, ‘Visitor Attraction of the Year’ and ‘Experience of the Year’. Others champion ‘Accessible and Inclusive Tourism’ and ‘Ethical, Responsible and Sustainable Tourism’, shining a light on some of the most successful and committed tourism businesses in the area.

Entries will be judged by a panel of experts in the autumn. Those shortlisted will be informed in November 2019 and the winners will be announced at a prestigious awards ceremony in early 2020.

The BRM Solicitors Chesterfield Festival of Cricket, which returns to the picturesque Queen’s Park on Sunday 14 July, will see Derbyshire play Northamptonshire in four-day first-class cricket, before it rounds-off with the showpiece Twenty20 fixture against Yorkshire in front of what is expected to be a capacity crowd.

Survey highlights positive impact D2N2 Growth Hub has had on local businesses

A business support network which helps SMEs across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire to scale up and create jobs helps has enabled three quarters of the businesses it has worked with over the past 12 months to boost their in-house knowledge.

The D2N2 Growth Hub, which launched in 2016, has also helped 54% of the businesses it has worked with to innovate, 27% to invest in new technology and 16% to increase their turnover.

A further seven percent of the businesses it has supported have created new jobs over the past year, with the same percentage of businesses increasing their exports. It also helped 13% of businesses to access funding.

Of the businesses which have received D2N2 Growth Hub support, 89% would recommend the service to other SMEs, with 64% saying they had taken positive action as a result of the support they received. 81% of businesses the Growth Hub has helped have rated the support they received as either excellent or good.

The results are from the annual customer satisfaction survey of the D2N2 Growth Hub. Independent researchers spoke to around 350 of the 1,750 businesses the Growth Hub supported between January 2018 and January 2019.

The Growth Hub provides free, impartial advice to help businesses grow. Its support is available to start-ups, growing businesses and companies who are ready to scale up their operations. With a vast array of services on offer from the public, private and third sectors,  many businesses struggle to find the best services to fit their needs. The D2N2 Growth Hub fills this gap by providing up-to-date, valuable and relevant information, guidance and support.

D2N2 Growth Hub Manager Chris Pook said: “It’s clear from the results of this survey that the Growth Hub is having a real and positive impact on local businesses, by providing them with the support and advice they need to grow.

“All the headline indicators are up on previous years.’’

“With the Growth Hub moving into its next phase, with new advisers being recruited and a new grant scheme coming soon, we should hopefully see these results improve further as we continue our work to support growing businesses across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, which are the lifeblood of our economy.”

One of the Derbyshire businesses that has received support from the D2N2 Growth Hub is CAD for Fashion, an academy which trains budding fashion designers and experienced industry professionals in how to use the latest technology in the fashion sector.

Founder Erica Horne, a successful fashion designer in her own right, said: “I can’t thank the Growth Hub enough. My adviser has been with me the whole way, offering invaluable support and advice as well as opening my eyes to the huge amount of resources available locally from workshops to funding.

“I have learnt so much from the last nine months of support and to have my ideas turn reality really is amazing.”

The D2N2 Growth Hub marked its fourth ‘birthday’ in December (below) with a celebration event including some of the more than 7,000 businesses it has engaged with.

New Buildings Progress at Markham Vale

Derbyshire based construction company B and K Building Services Ltd are making excellent progress on constructing the new building for Protec International at Markham Vale.

The steel framework has been completed enabling the placing of roof liner sheets to commence. The sub-base has been trimmed and works will commence shortly on casting the ground floor concrete slab. Other works to start during the month include fixing the wall cladding, the installation of a gas membrane and the installation of foul water drainage and the construction of surface water interceptors and outfalls.

A similar level of construction activity is underway on Enterprise Way on the MV55 speculative development for Henry Boot Developments.

Markham Vale is a 200-acre industrial and logistics development located at Junction 29A of the M1 in Derbyshire, a joint venture between Henry Boot Developments (HBD) and Derbyshire County Council.

One of the region’s most successful industrial locations, Markham Vale is home to the likes of Great Bear, Gist, Ferdinand Bilstein and Sterigenics.

New scheme to boost digital skills of autistic individuals and women

A pioneering project to equip autistic individuals and women who want to get back into work with digital skills they need to find a job has been launched, funded by the Government’s Department of Culture, Media and Sport’s Digital Innovation Fund.

The D2N2 Skills Academy offers a series of free, four-day training programmes to participants across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, running during June, July, September and October 2019.

A similar digital project – targeted at different audiences – will also shortly be available to individuals across the Sheffield City Region (SCR).

Led by Nottingham City Council, a range of local organisations are joining forces to deliver the programmes, including Autism East Midlands, the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership, East Midlands Chamber (Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire), the University of Derby, Nottingham Trent University and the University of Nottingham.

Its aim is to encourage under-represented groups across the D2N2 area to get the skills they need for a career in the digital sector.

It has been set up exclusively to help autistic individuals and women (aged 18 and over), particularly those returning to work after a period of absence, out of work or looking for another job.

Those taking part can choose from one of five different training themes, each aimed at helping them to become more digitally savvy to boost their career prospects.

Each subject area comprises four free training sessions, spread over a four-week period, designed to teach the skills required to become work-ready for a job in the digital sector. Each course set is delivered by experienced, industry-leading experts. Digital Graduate buddies, provided by the universities, will provide practical support, guidance and mentoring at each of the training sessions.

The subjects available are web development, digital marketing, data visualisation and cyber security, along with digital essentials, which covers basic digital skills including getting the most out of a range of devices, applications and the cloud.

At the end of each course, those attending will receive a certificate of attainment, along with a comprehensive workbook that can be used as a reference guide for the future.

The programme of support will continue for some attendees, with a selection chosen to complete work placements in local businesses where they can use their newly learned skills. And it is hoped that through the programme support and the engagement with the business community that a handful of attendees will secure long term work as a result.

Rachel Quinn, Skills lead at D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership said: “Digital Skills are becoming an essential part of our workforce with over 80% of advertised vacancies having a digital element.

“By working collaboratively with our partners and supporting people with barriers to work, to digitally upskill, we are benefiting both our economy and a more inclusive local economy.”

Mathew Orford, Director of Adult Services at Autism East Midlands, said: “It is fantastic that this project recognises that autistic individuals are underrepresented in the workforce and often possess the ability and potential to thrive in this sector.

“Many autistic individuals struggle in mainstream education settings and may, therefore, not achieve the qualifications required in order to secure employment in the digital sector, despite having the aptitude and desire to do so. Through this project we hope to play a part in helping these individuals build their confidence to fulfil their dreams and make an ongoing impact on society.”

Diane Beresford, Deputy Chief Executive at the Chamber, said: “The Chamber’s stated aim is to enhance East Midlands businesses and communities, so we are delighted to be involved with this cutting-edge project.

“The digital agenda is evolving all the time, so equipping autistic individuals and women who have been out of employment for a long time with the skills they need to forge a new career in this fast-growing sector is key.”

University of Derby Vice-Chancellor and academic honoured in Stonewall Regional Awards

University of Derby Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kathryn Mitchell, and Sarah Barley-McMullen, the University’s LGBT+ Allies Staff Network Chair, have both received a regional Stonewall Award, in acknowledgement of their commitment to role modelling inclusion and equality.

In February this year, the University of Derby rose 189 points in the Stonewall Workplace Index, putting it within reach of becoming one of the most inclusive LGBT+ 100 employers in the UK.

Through the work identified in the University’s Stonewall Workplace Index submission, Stonewall awarded Professor Kathryn Mitchell ‘Stonewall Senior Champion of the Year’ for the Midlands, and Sarah Barley-McMullen ‘Stonewall Role Model of the Year’ for the Midlands.

Professor Mitchell said: “The University of Derby places great importance on having Role Models and Allies for those with protected characteristics, so we are delighted that our work to promote inclusion, equality and diversity has been recognised in this way by Stonewall. 

“Our LGBT+ staff network has over 55 members, who are actively engaged in creating an inclusive culture where students and staff can explore their identity in a safe and supportive environment. 

“Over the last year we have embedded more specific support mechanisms for Trans and Bi students, deepening the richness of the University’s diversity even further. We know that if someone is able to be their whole self when they come through the University’s doors, then they are more likely to engage proactively in their studies, and in their professional and academic roles.”

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots in New York, where role models and allies of the LGBT+ community made a stand against the violence and discrimination that was thrown at them daily.

Pride events are now held all over the world, bringing together people who represent many different religious beliefs, identities and abilities.

For the first time, the University is sponsoring three local Pride events in Chesterfield, Derby and Belper. The events celebrate LGBT+ culture and brings together the diverse communities across Derbyshire.

In addition, an Inclusion Quality Mark is being created with graduate employers and stakeholders. This is to ensure benchmarking and the consistency of inclusive practice continues for graduates in employment and students on placement. 

Sarah Barley-McMullen added: “One of the worst things anyone can do to someone else is treat them as though they are invisible and as though how they identify is wrong. Having visible Role Models and Allies within an organisation not only says, we see you, you matter, it also gives people the confidence to be their whole self within an organisation.

“The University of Derby does not identify difference in order to consciously be inclusive, but instead it creates a culture that normalises difference and respects who we are all meant to be. Through this approach the University is role modelling positive cultural change.”

New Appointment Follows Successful Year For Law Firm

Chesterfield Champions, BRM Solicitors have appointed a new director to its growing Real Estate Department.

James Alger is a very experienced commercial property lawyer, and joins BRM from regional law firm Keebles.

James said: “I am delighted to join BRM during an exciting period of growth. Along with the existing team, I am looking forward to contributing to the firm’s continuing growth and success and helping develop the BRM brand as a commercial force in the region.”

The appointment follows a successful year for the law firm. BRM opened the doors of its Sheffield office at the newly renovated Steel City House on West Street in early 2018, building on the success of its Chesterfield HQ.

In its first year, BRM has seen strong growth. New relationships forged in the Steel City, and a sustained recruitment drive attracting new talent to its commercial teams has allowed the firm to quickly realise its ambitions, and enhance the range and quality of its services. This has been welcomed by both existing clients, and new clients attracted to BRM following the expansion into Sheffield.

Most recently, a team has been created in the Sheffield office within the Property Department to service high-volume plot sales work on behalf of a national property developer.

Number of people in work continues to rise across the region

The number of people in work across the East Midlands rose in the three months to the end of April compared to the previous quarter according to figures released this morning.

Office for National Statistics data showed there were 2,343,049 in work, 31,713 more than during the three months to the end of January.

Over the same periods, the number of people recorded as unemployed fell by 8,421 to 105,124, giving an unemployment rate of 4.3% – a 0.4 percentage point improvement.

Scott Knowles, Chief Executive at award-winning East Midlands Chamber*, said: “Once again the figures underline the robustness of the region. They show that despite all the doubt and uncertainty over Brexit and the continuing upheaval in Parliament, businesses in the East Midlands continue to do what they do best – create jobs and wealth.

“Although there have been blips over the past year, the overall trend continues to show increasing employment and falling unemployment.”

Today’s figures showed that nationally the East Midlands had the highest proportion of jobs in the production sector at 14.4%.

Despite the improved regional employment figures, the number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance rose by 1,070 across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire in May compared with April, with Nottingham city seeing the biggest individual rise and Derbyshire, excluding Derby, recording the fewest new sign-ons.

Shorts advise on MBO of Bullseye Car Parts

Chesterfield Champions Shorts recently teamed up with Keebles and NatWest to act as lead advisors, legal representatives and funders, to Stacy Phillips on his recent management buy-out of motor parts specialists, Bullseye Superfactors Ltd.

Bullseye have been supplying car parts to South Yorkshire and the surrounding areas for over 38 years.  Stacy first joined the company in 1989 and for the last six years has been Managing Director, playing an active role in the development and growth of the business.  This culminated in being given the opportunity to put together a Management buy-out when the owners decided to sell.

BHP tax department strengthened with new starter

Yorkshire and North Derbyshire’s leading accountancy firm BHP has added to its ever-growing tax department after taking on chartered tax advisor Peter Dobson.

Peter, aged 30, makes the move to the firm, having previously worked for Deloitte in their Global Mobility team based in Manchester.

Originally from Doncaster, Peter is a graduate of Leeds Metropolitan University where he earned an undergraduate and a master’s degree, both in accounting.

Peter has previously worked in personal tax before shifting to expat matters and is looking forward to combining the two at BHP. His appointment boosts the team to a total of 53 tax advisors, 23 of which are chartered – making it one of the largest in the Yorkshire region.

He said: “I like working with numbers, tax was always a favourite topic of mine at university and I decided that was the route I wanted to go down afterwards,”

On his decision to join the firm, he said: “Having spoken to people who know BHP personally, it was so highly recommended by them that I was convinced to join.”

“I was keen to join a firm of this size to allow me to work across all taxes and BHP stood-out in the mid-tier market as both an innovator and a well-known people-centric business.”
