Two new partners appointed at Mitchells

Chesterfield-based independent Chartered Accountants and Business Advisers, Mitchells has strengthened its senior management team with the appointment of two partners.

Andrew McDaid and Tony Hornsby, who were both previously Senior Associates with the firm, now join managing partners Richard  Trueman and Tim Leeman in leading the strategic direction of Mitchells.

Founded nearly 150 years ago in 1868, the appointment of Andrew and Tony secures the long-term future of Mitchells, which has since established itself as an expert SME business adviser across Derbyshire, South Yorkshire, the East Midlands and beyond.

Tony’s area of specialisms includes corporate finance and the care home sector in which he has helped position Mitchells as one of the leading accountancy specialists in the UK.

Within the firm Andrew specialises in audit and assurance, access to finance and grants and supporting high growth businesses achieve their ambitions. His work with clients during the recession enabled many companies to create jobs during the difficult financial period.

Andrew was also instrumental in developing and implementing Mitchells’ award-winning CloudMitchells, which gives clients remote, secure 24/7/365 real-time access to their financial information to provide their virtual finance director proposition.

Commenting on his appointment Andrew, who joined Mitchells in 2008, said: “Becoming a partner is acknowledgment of my commitment to Mitchells and its clients, while sending out a clear message to the business community that the firm is continuing to grow and evolve. It is a very exciting time for Mitchells.”

Tony, who joined nearly 20 years ago, agreed adding: “We have a great team of business advisers and accountants at Mitchells and one that we continue to add to and develop. This puts us in a great position to add value to clients businesses and growth ambitions, helping them manage their own businesses and make proactive strategy decisions helping profitability rather than looking back at the past.”

Managing partner Richard Trueman commented: “Tony and Andrew’s appointment is a major step for the firm. We removed the top heavy partner structure associated with traditional accountancy practices and this has led to better and quicker decision making for our clients which has contributed significantly to our growth. Tony and Andrew are instrumental in our plans for the future of Mitchells and I am delighted that they are joining myself and Tim in leading this.”

Outside work Andrew, from Stannington, enjoys attending music gigs and festivals, while Tony, from Mansfield, is currently training for the gruelling Oxfam Trailtrekker Challenge on 22 – 23 August, where he will have just 30 hours to cover the 100km (61 mile) course through the Yorkshire Dales.

Chamber Reflects on Strengthening Jobs Market

There are now 45,000 more people in work than there were a year ago in the East Midlands and more than 37,000 fewer people are unemployed, according to figures released this morning.

The Office for National Statistics issued its latest monthly regional employment bulletin earlier, which showed there were 2.225m people aged 16-64 in employment in the three months to March 2015, compared to 2.18m in the same period in 2014.

The number of unemployed people was 114,447, compared to 151,574 in 2014, meaning the regional unemployment rate currently stands at 5.1%, compared to the national rate of 5.5%.

The number of people in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire claiming Jobseekers’ Allowance (JSA) fell by 999 in April, meaning there were 16,595 fewer claimants across the area than there were a year ago.

The number of people in Chesterfield claiming the benefit stood at 1312, which is 616 lower than the figure announced in April 2014.

East Midlands Chamber (Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire) has welcomed the figures.

George Cowcher, Chief Executive, said: “Today’s employment and claimant figures once again highlight how strong the East Midlands economy is at the moment, with businesses continuing to create jobs and drive the growth that is needed to fully rebalance the national economy.

“It’s also pleasing that earnings continue to increase and boost living standards – a focus on improving productivity from businesses will ensure this is sustainable.

“Businesses need a continued period of stability in order to deliver the growth and prosperity the country needs and the new Government has the opportunity to use its strengthened mandate to bring forward initiatives which will maintain and build upon the momentum the economy has built-up over the past two years.”

Shorts’ Cycle Challenge Raises over £7,500 in Memory of Colleague

Last weekend a team of 15 partners and staff from Shorts completed a 170 mile coast to coast cycle route to raise over £7,500 for The Lymphoma Association in memory of a long-serving Chesterfield colleague.

The Way of the Roses challenge, which followed months of training and preparation, began at Morecambe on Friday morning, and ended in Bridlington on Sunday afternoon with all 15 team members completing the full distance and crossing the finishing line together.

Event organiser, Adrian Dunkley comments:-

“What a wonderful experience, and such an incredible feeling completing this challenging event. We had everything from driving rain and high winds on day one to punctures, broken chains, one fall and a bike stuck in 2nd gear that very nearly didn’t make it to the finish line. Despite this, the route took us through stunning scenery and it was a thoroughly enjoyable event; the months of training really paid off. This has, without doubt, been the most enjoyable and rewarding challenge that I have ever been involved in and to complete the event with 14 like-minded work colleagues has provided us all with an unforgettable experience.

“Most importantly, we would like to thank everyone who made a donation to the Lymphoma Association via our JustGiving page. Money is still coming in from individual sponsorship, but at the moment we believe that including Gift Aid, we will have raised in excess of £7,500 which is absolutely unbelievable. We would also not have been able to do this, without the help of Andrew’s of Tideswell, who very kindly provided the transportation for the team, our bikes and all the equipment to the starting point and back home again at the end.”

Shorts’ senior partner Paul Beeson who also completed the challenge added:-

“We completed the Way of the Roses in memory of a former colleague Brian Sewell who sadly passed away last year. It was wonderful that so many people wanted to be a part of this, and it meant a lot to the team to see so many people at the finishing line cheering us home.”

Those who completed the challenge include Paul Beeson, Chris Chambers, Howard Freeman, Simon Hollin, Andy Ryder, Linzi Riley, Tom Winter, Adrian Dunkley, Martin Dean, Matt Milnes, Greg Taylor, Paul Snaith, Kate Smith, Eleanor Huddleston and Claire Seedhouse.

Chamber Comments on Appointment of New Business Secretary

The Rt Hon Sajid Javid MP has been appointed as Secretary of State for Business in Prime Minister David Cameron’s new Cabinet.

Mr Javid, the Member for Bromsgrove, was Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport in the previous Cabinet. He takes over the business brief from former Lib Dem MP Dr Vince Cable, who lost his seat at last Thursday’s election.

Chris Hobson, Head of Information and Representation at East Midlands Chamber (Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire), said: “We look forward to working with Sajid as he looks to move the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) forward to maintain and build on the momentum in the economy, which has been largely driven by business.

“In order to do this, he needs to ensure the team at BIS is talking to businesses here in the East Midlands, which as a region, has been a national leader in terms of creating jobs and driving economic growth in the UK over the past five years.

“The region has a broad-based and balanced economy, with real strengths in manufacturing and engineering and these are key sectors which need to be supported in order to secure the long-term success of the UK’s economy.”
