Foodie family judges wanted to help find Chesterfield’s best family-friendly restaurant

Two foodie families are being sought to decide which of Chesterfield’s eateries should take the Best Family-Friendly title in the 2016 Food and Drink Awards.

Destination Chesterfield, organiser of the town’s annual Food and Drink Awards, is looking for families with children aged under 12, to judge shortlisted family-friendly establishments in the annual awards.

The Family-Friendly Award aims to find the town’s ultimate eatery that offers great food, excellent facilities for young children, special menus and goes that extra step to make sure families can enjoy their dining experience. As well as enjoying a meal, the winning families will be required to mark the establishments on food, ease of access, cleanliness and the quality and variety of children’s food. Last year the popular award, which is sponsored by Jumble Design, was won for the second year running by The Manor at Brampton.

Each family will win an all-expenses-paid meal for four, the lucky winners will also each receive two tickets to attend the glittering awards ceremony in October at Chesterfield College’s Heart Space Building.

Destination Chesterfield Manager Dominic Stevens commented: “We get many nominations in the family friendly category, so there are no shortages of eateries to try out. Who better to help us decide the winner of the title but families themselves. This competition is a great chance for families in the area to voice their opinion and get to enjoy a meal out too.”

Entries to the competition close on midnight on Thursday 30 June and can be made online at www.chesterfield.co.uk/foodanddrinkawards/family-judge-competition/ or by post to:

Banner Jones duo take on 40 miles for Dementia Awareness Week

Directors Richard Barlow and Rob Stubbs from Banner Jones Solicitors each completed a 40 mile ultra marathon on Saturday 14th May to show their support and help raise money for the thousands of Derbyshire people affected by dementia.

The pair were inspired to run the Sherwood Forest Dukeries Ultra by Dom Stevens from Destination Chesterfield who also completed 30 miles on the day.

For Dom the event was number six in a series of sixteen team challenges designed to raise awareness locally for the Alzheimer’s Society and brings Dom’s current fundraising total to over £3000.

Explaining his reasons for joining the team, Richard Barlow, Head of Wills & Probate said:-

“I’ve always fancied having a go at the ultra. It was a great chance to support Dom, raise money for the Alzheimer’s society and complete a challenge of my own all in one go. It’s also national Dementia Awareness Week between the 15th- 21st May and so raising money for something that affects so many of my clients seemed like the right thing to do.”

Speaking about the challenge, Rob Stubs, Head of Dispute Resolution said:-

“The first few miles were quite tough going as part of the course had flooded, so we ran for some time in wet shoes. The scenery along the way helped to make up for it though. As a rather cruel twist the organisers gave us a ‘free mile’ so we actually ended running 41 miles, but we dug in and encouraged each other to the end. The finish line was a welcome sight and reaching it felt like a huge achievement. It was a great event and we’ve even suggested we might run the course again, but not for a while!”

Commending Richard and Rob, Marketing Manager, Ann-Marie Lowe commented:-

“Banner Jones Solicitors does a lot of charity work throughout the year and regularly enters teams into sporting events. The pair took this on with absolute determination and have helped Dom to reach his fundraising target of £3000 in the process, which is absolutely fantastic. We are very proud of our runners!”

Post Office to grow operations in Chesterfield

Business leaders in Chesterfield have welcomed news from the Post Office that it is to grow operations at its town centre base. A total of 160 jobs are to be brought to the Future Walk offices on West Bars in Chesterfield.

Huw Bowen, Chief Executive of Chesterfield Borough Council made the announcement at the annual Celebrate Chesterfield event organised by Destination Chesterfield, in association with The University of Derby.

The jobs have arisen following the centralisation of the majority of the Post Office’s internal contact centre/helpline work for employees and agents (franchisees) which will complement its Finance Service Centre which is already based at Future Walk. So far 45 roles of the 160 have been centralised with additional jobs expected in the near future.

Councillor John Burrows, Chesterfield Borough Council’s leader and cabinet member for regeneration said: “Since opening at Future Walk in the 1960s, the Post Office has been a major employer in Chesterfield and these moves which will bring up to 160 jobs to the town underlines that.
“The centralisation will bring more people into the town centre, using our shops and businesses and will help grow our town centre economy.”

250 of the town’s business leaders gathered at the town’s sell-out Celebrate event on 17 March at The Winding Wheel. Organised by Destination Chesterfield in association with The University of Derby, the event update the business community on the progress made with developments, including the £320million Chesterfield Waterside scheme, at the event which was sponsored by Central Technology and Markham Vale, also included representatives from University of Derby, Meter Provida and Central Technology.

The breakfast event also looked back on the success of Destination Chesterfield, the town’s inward investment campaign, during the last 12 months.

Celebrating apprenticeships in Chesterfield

Businesses throughout Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire are celebrating National Apprenticeship Week 2016 from 14 – 18 March.

The annual awareness week is coordinated by the National Apprenticeship Service and designed to showcase apprenticeships and the positive impact they have on individuals, businesses and the wider economy.

Apprenticeships are an excellent way of gaining qualifications whilst getting real life work experience and being paid for it. Available in 170 different industries from hair and beauty to aerospace engineering, apprenticeships have been making an impact on local businesses for hundreds of years. Click here to read stories from some of the area’s current apprentices.

A number of the town’s business leaders and figureheads started their careers as apprentices, including some of the UK’s biggest and best known business leaders and personalities– Michael Caine (not a lot of people know that), John Frieda, Jamie Oliver, Alexander McQueen and Sir Alex Ferguson were all former apprentices who are now leading in their respective fields.

Closer to home, Chesterfield Borough Council’s Leader Cllr John Burrows began his career as an apprentice with the National Coal Board, as did Stuart Cutforth, Principal and Chief Executive of Chesterfield College Group who did an electrical engineering apprenticeship.

Hailing from the mining village of Staveley, university and a teaching career was not even considered for Stuart Cutforth as a 16 year old school leaver in 1970. He followed in both his father’s and brother’s footsteps and spent the next eight years working at Westhorpe Colliery in Killamarsh as an electrical engineer.

He left the mining industry in 1978 after completing a degree in electrical and electronic engineering and having worked his way up to Chargeman Electrician, a modern day equivalent of an electrical engineer, during his period with the National Coal Board.

His entered the further education sector in 1979 and has since had a career in it spanning 37 years and eight different colleges. In 2014 he returned ‘home’ to take up the role at Chesterfield College where he is responsible for the future of over 4000 apprentices.

Peter Swallow, Chair of Destination Chesterfield and Managing Director of Bolsterstone, the developer behind the £300million Chesterfield Waterside scheme, commented: “I am a huge advocate of apprenticeships – they are vital to the economy, particularly Chesterfield’s, where young people are the future life blood of many of the SME businesses within the town.”

A number of local former apprentices are making waves nationally, including Marcus Leverton, director of Leverton UK, and the youngest ever person to become a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) in 2014 and Liz Fisher, Head of Tax at Mitchells Chartered Accountants and Business Advisers, who last year scooped top honours in a national Chartered Institute of Taxation exam. She beat more than 1000 candidates to gain the highest marks and was awarded the prestigious Ronald Ison Medal and the CCH Prize for the highest distinction mark awarded in the UK.

Liz’s original plans on leaving sixth form were to continue to university and undertake an English Literature degree. Breaking the news that she was turning down her university place in favour of beginning a workplace training scheme was not welcomed by everyone. She said: “The head of sixth form at my school said that it was the worst decision I’d ever make, but he was wrong, I have no regrets about leaving education and taking up a workplace traineeship, not for a second. It was definitely the right thing for me to do. I don’t regret it for a second.”

Marcus Leverton added: “Becoming a Fellow of the CIOB was the proudest moment for me. I think that my apprenticeship was definitely a contributing factor to this as I was able to get professionally qualified a lot more quickly than most other people in my trade.”

With a generation of skilled workers set to retire in the next 10 years and no obvious way to replace them, apprentices are being seen as keen to addressing the severe shortage of skilled workers across the construction, engineering and manufacturing industries.

Struggling to recruit skilled staff and faced with an ageing workforce, United Cast Bar, based in Chesterfield, instigated an apprenticeship programme in 2015. The business currently has three apprentices and will recruit a further apprentice in 2016.

Managing Director James Brand explains: “With our apprenticeship programme we are taking a medium to long-term view to address the issue of recruiting skilled staff. A number of our skilled workforce will retire in a few years and we are training apprentices now to replace their roles. The beauty of having apprentices is that we are able to handpick their studying and tailor their learning to our business’ needs and ensure they become rounded individuals and have a long-term career with United Cast Bar. Although we are a foundry, we have roles right across the spectrum from maintenance and machinery to sales and admin.”

The ability to experience the many different roles within a business as part of the apprenticeship programme enabled Marcus Leverton to decide on the area he wanted to specialise in. He explains: “It was through doing an apprenticeship and shadowing skilled members of all different trades that I realised being in the construction industry was the right career for me. I particularly found the project management and computer design side of the business really interesting so I decided to specialise in this area of the business.”

“As I say to my 15 year old niece, do something you really enjoy and feel passionate about because in reality, you’ll be working for a really long time, and you don’t want to be stuck doing something you don’t like for the next 60 years.”

As well as Chesterfield College, Chesterfield has a wealth of apprenticeship and training providers including NLT Training Services which specialises in the engineering sector, East Midlands Chamber and Slic Training.

High demand already for places at breakfast event celebrating Chesterfield’s success and plans for 2016

With £1 billion of regeneration taking place in Chesterfield, the annual Celebrate event, which is taking place on Thursday 17 March, is the hottest ticket in town.

Taking place at the Winding Wheel from 7.30am – 11.00am, already 190 places at the 250 seat event have been reserved.

Organised by Destination Chesterfield in association with The University of Derby, the town’s leaders will update the business community at the event on the progress made with developments, including the £340million Chesterfield Waterside and the £400million Peak scheme.

Later this year The University of Derby will open its new Chesterfield campus at the former St Helena’s Grammar School, where it will offer world class university facilities for Nursing, Business, Computing, Law and Engineering students.

“Expanding our work in Chesterfield with the refurbished campus in such a wonderful building comes in the same year the University celebrates a decade in Buxton’s historic Devonshire Dome,” said Professor Rod –Dubrow-Marshall, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University.

“Research commissioned by the University into the economic impact of the Buxton Campus on the local economy revealed that it supported 500 jobs through a total spend of £32 million – and we hope to have a similar impact in Chesterfield.”

Peter Swallow, Chair of Destination Chesterfield and Managing director of Bolsterstone which is developing Chesterfield Waterside, will also speak at the event. He said: “Celebrate is an important and popular event for the town’s business community. It is an opportunity to reflect on the success we have had and to hear, first-hand, from decision-makers about forthcoming plans.

“2015 was a significant year for Chesterfield; it was the first in the town’s history that unemployment was lower than the national average. With the current and future developments in the town and inward investment it is attracting, it looks like 2016 will deliver similar successes for the town. It is a very exciting time for Chesterfield.”

The event is free to attend and last year was the largest and fully subscribed Celebrate Chesterfield since the first was held in 2011. This year, the headline sponsor of Celebrate 2016 is joined by fellow sponsors Central Technology and Markham Vale.

Richard Thompson, Sales Director of Central Technology commented: “We are delighted to be one of the sponsors of one of the most significant Chesterfield business events of the year.

“The exhibition is a fantastic opportunity to present our well-established business to leading industry heads in Chesterfield and to demonstrate how we are passionate about supporting business in the area though IT support and Telecoms Solutions.”

“Our experienced team and technological knowhow already provides many local businesses with the IT Support and security they need to help grow their business and we hope that through continued collaborative working between local organisations in the region, we can help place Chesterfield and its business strengths on the national map.”

Ben Ward, Director, Henry Boot Developments, said: “We are proud to return as sponsors of this year’s Celebrate Chesterfield event. The event is fantastic in promoting the local area and showcasing the upcoming activity in 2016. Markham Vale is a key economic development for the area; it has created over 700 new jobs since development commenced, which is contributing to the improvements that continue to transform Chesterfield into a destination.”
