Primary Dance Festival wows sell-out crowds

Local parents and families were treated to a variety of carefully choreographed routines from nearly 30 schools at the Chesterfield School Sport Partnership’s eighth annual Primary Dance Festival.

Due to the popularity of the event, the festival was held over two days for the first time with over 1000 people attending over the four sessions held on 8th and 9th March.

With the 2016 Olympics around the corner, this year’s theme was ‘Rio 2016 Carnival’ and each school embraced it by dressing up in masks and bright clothing, playing drums and getting into the carnival spirit. There were many highlights, including Spire Junior School’s use of a large Brazilian flag as part of their energetic dance. Poolsbrook Primary also involved the majority of their school by bringing a samba band to play before the dance.

Mark Tournier, Partnership Development Manager at the Chesterfield School Sport Partnership, said: “The primary dance platform provides an opportunity for every young person to perform and showcase their personal best. It takes a huge amount of courage and determination to take the steps onto the stage and perform, and to see the self-confidence, pride and smiles as they leave the stage is why we do it.

“Our dance festival is a long-standing annual event and to see it grow over the past few years, to run over two days with four performances is testament to the support of the primary schools across Chesterfield and to the hard work of teachers and parents.”

Zoe, a dancer from Hollingwood, said: “My favourite part was dancing on the stage.”

Her classmate Tilly added: “I enjoyed watching everyone else” and Abigail said: “We’ve practiced really hard every dinner time and after school too.”

Larissa and Abbie, pupils at Brimington Junior, were delighted after their performance. Abbie said: “It took about ten weeks of practice to get the performance ready and the lifts. Everyone was brilliant.”

Larissa added: “Everyone was so colourful and when all the schools were downstairs it looked like a carnival coming together. I liked everyone’s dances and couldn’t choose a favourite.”

Miss Bailey, of Cutthorpe Primary, whose solely boys group opened the final session, said: “It was a really nice event, always fantastic. It’s been so colourful as well. The boys have been coming up with their own ideas for the dance and really got into it – they were brilliant.”

New Designer Store to Open In Chesterfield

Local lads from Chesterfield have secured a place in UK fashion history this month, as they launch a unique men’s designer shop in Chesterfield town centre – securing an exclusive stockist, the only store outside of London.

The Chesterfield-born brothers, George and Joe Ward, have always had a passion for business, having worked for their dad’s retail company since childhood. George studied business at local Chesterfield College and both have always had a passion for fashion, so when the opportunity arose they jumped at the opportunity to start their own venture.

The boys’ local work ethic has secured them some of the UK’s most recognised fashion designer contracts, with none other than upcoming tailored suit designer, Joshua Kane.

Joshua Kane is well-known throughout Europe for his unique tailored styles, famously popular within sportsmen such as footballers and fashion conscious celebrities, with the likes of Dougie Poynter, model Oxford Neilsen and Portuguese football pro Raul Meireles. Shoppers have known to travel as far as Paris and Spain to his London store to shop!

Other stockists include Hackett, 7 for all Mankind and local clothing manufacturers Smedley’s, who will be providing their excellent range of casual t-shirts, cardigans and jumpers – all made just down the road.

The shop, appropriately named ‘Weekend Menswear’ after all it has everything a guy can need ready for the weekend – will open on the 18th March with a fun-packed weekend launch – at Stephenson Place, Town Centre in Chesterfield. To celebrate the opening, Weekend Menswear are offering  10% discount off all casual wear over the opening weekend.

Celebrating apprenticeships in Chesterfield

Businesses throughout Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire are celebrating National Apprenticeship Week 2016 from 14 – 18 March.

The annual awareness week is coordinated by the National Apprenticeship Service and designed to showcase apprenticeships and the positive impact they have on individuals, businesses and the wider economy.

Apprenticeships are an excellent way of gaining qualifications whilst getting real life work experience and being paid for it. Available in 170 different industries from hair and beauty to aerospace engineering, apprenticeships have been making an impact on local businesses for hundreds of years. Click here to read stories from some of the area’s current apprentices.

A number of the town’s business leaders and figureheads started their careers as apprentices, including some of the UK’s biggest and best known business leaders and personalities– Michael Caine (not a lot of people know that), John Frieda, Jamie Oliver, Alexander McQueen and Sir Alex Ferguson were all former apprentices who are now leading in their respective fields.

Closer to home, Chesterfield Borough Council’s Leader Cllr John Burrows began his career as an apprentice with the National Coal Board, as did Stuart Cutforth, Principal and Chief Executive of Chesterfield College Group who did an electrical engineering apprenticeship.

Hailing from the mining village of Staveley, university and a teaching career was not even considered for Stuart Cutforth as a 16 year old school leaver in 1970. He followed in both his father’s and brother’s footsteps and spent the next eight years working at Westhorpe Colliery in Killamarsh as an electrical engineer.

He left the mining industry in 1978 after completing a degree in electrical and electronic engineering and having worked his way up to Chargeman Electrician, a modern day equivalent of an electrical engineer, during his period with the National Coal Board.

His entered the further education sector in 1979 and has since had a career in it spanning 37 years and eight different colleges. In 2014 he returned ‘home’ to take up the role at Chesterfield College where he is responsible for the future of over 4000 apprentices.

Peter Swallow, Chair of Destination Chesterfield and Managing Director of Bolsterstone, the developer behind the £300million Chesterfield Waterside scheme, commented: “I am a huge advocate of apprenticeships – they are vital to the economy, particularly Chesterfield’s, where young people are the future life blood of many of the SME businesses within the town.”

A number of local former apprentices are making waves nationally, including Marcus Leverton, director of Leverton UK, and the youngest ever person to become a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) in 2014 and Liz Fisher, Head of Tax at Mitchells Chartered Accountants and Business Advisers, who last year scooped top honours in a national Chartered Institute of Taxation exam. She beat more than 1000 candidates to gain the highest marks and was awarded the prestigious Ronald Ison Medal and the CCH Prize for the highest distinction mark awarded in the UK.

Liz’s original plans on leaving sixth form were to continue to university and undertake an English Literature degree. Breaking the news that she was turning down her university place in favour of beginning a workplace training scheme was not welcomed by everyone. She said: “The head of sixth form at my school said that it was the worst decision I’d ever make, but he was wrong, I have no regrets about leaving education and taking up a workplace traineeship, not for a second. It was definitely the right thing for me to do. I don’t regret it for a second.”

Marcus Leverton added: “Becoming a Fellow of the CIOB was the proudest moment for me. I think that my apprenticeship was definitely a contributing factor to this as I was able to get professionally qualified a lot more quickly than most other people in my trade.”

With a generation of skilled workers set to retire in the next 10 years and no obvious way to replace them, apprentices are being seen as keen to addressing the severe shortage of skilled workers across the construction, engineering and manufacturing industries.

Struggling to recruit skilled staff and faced with an ageing workforce, United Cast Bar, based in Chesterfield, instigated an apprenticeship programme in 2015. The business currently has three apprentices and will recruit a further apprentice in 2016.

Managing Director James Brand explains: “With our apprenticeship programme we are taking a medium to long-term view to address the issue of recruiting skilled staff. A number of our skilled workforce will retire in a few years and we are training apprentices now to replace their roles. The beauty of having apprentices is that we are able to handpick their studying and tailor their learning to our business’ needs and ensure they become rounded individuals and have a long-term career with United Cast Bar. Although we are a foundry, we have roles right across the spectrum from maintenance and machinery to sales and admin.”

The ability to experience the many different roles within a business as part of the apprenticeship programme enabled Marcus Leverton to decide on the area he wanted to specialise in. He explains: “It was through doing an apprenticeship and shadowing skilled members of all different trades that I realised being in the construction industry was the right career for me. I particularly found the project management and computer design side of the business really interesting so I decided to specialise in this area of the business.”

“As I say to my 15 year old niece, do something you really enjoy and feel passionate about because in reality, you’ll be working for a really long time, and you don’t want to be stuck doing something you don’t like for the next 60 years.”

As well as Chesterfield College, Chesterfield has a wealth of apprenticeship and training providers including NLT Training Services which specialises in the engineering sector, East Midlands Chamber and Slic Training.

Study into the benefits of HS2 for Chesterfield approved

A £300,000 grant through the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership will aid feasibility studies looking at proposed HS2 sites in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, and how they can best benefit the local economy.

Phase Two of the planned national high speed railway, HS2, will create a track running up from the West Midlands, before splitting into western (towards the North-West) and eastern lines. The eastern line will pass through the D2N2 area; with a proposed East Midlands ‘hub’ at Toton and a major maintenance depot at Staveley, near Chesterfield, before the track continues to Sheffield and the North-East.

The Phase Two route is due to be confirmed by Government this autumn (2016). Trains would not operate on it until 2033 at the earliest, on the current project timetable.

D2N2 has approved funding for feasibility studies looking at both the Toton and Staveley HS2 plans, to see how the maximum economic benefit could be gained for the area from this national rail project.

A £45,000 grant will fund research into the Staveley maintenance depot; which will be responsible for maintaining tracks, bridges, tunnels, signalling and overhead power supply for HS2’s entire eastern line (Birmingham to Leeds). It’s estimated the site could support around 540 jobs directly and a further 700 indirectly, through supply chains.

The work (consultants for which have yet to be selected) will:

  • help develop the wider HS2 masterplan, particularly its wider regeneration ambitions;
  • identify the road links which the depot will need to connect it to the local area;
  • alongside education providers, promote the case for a local rail training facility to act as a secondary site linked to the proposed HS2 College campuses at Birmingham and Doncaster;
  • increase awareness among north-east Derbyshire businesses of the opportunities HS2 represents.

The remaining D2N2 study funding will be used to look into the feasibility of creating road and tram links, which would connect the proposed East Midlands hub at Toton with other important sites, to provide a more integrated transport network for passengers. This will include:

  • the feasibility of NET tram extensions to Toton’s HS2 station and beyond (study to be led by Nottingham City Council’s NET team);
  • updating of the traffic model for the hub area (to be led by Highways England);
  • a study looking into tram-train links (to be led by Network Rail and Nottingham City Council’s NET team).

David Ralph, Chief Executive of the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership, said: “Our IIB board members set aside funds for feasibility studies some time ago, realising that where there is a chance for significant economic gain, investment in further study would be needed.

“The HS2 project represents an enormous opportunity for the D2N2 LEP area. We want to make sure we’ve investigated any practical means of taking full advantage of that, to grow the economy and create jobs.”

In his Comprehensive Spending Review last November (2015), Chancellor George Osborne awarded £1.25million to the D2N2 LEP, to develop a growth strategy for the proposed HS2 hub at Toton. In his previous July Budget, the Chancellor had agreed £5million to develop Midlands Connect – the cross-region co-operation between Midlands’ LEPs, local authorities and businesses – to integrate the region’s transport networks, which will also include work on HS2 development.
