Chesterfield named in top 10 of the UK’s Summer Destinations on the Rise in 2017

Chesterfield has been named in the top 10 summer hotspots on the rise in 2017 in a report collated by Holidaylettings.co.uk, a TripAdvisor company and the UK’s leading holiday home booking site.

The list ranks 15 destinations around the UK where holiday rental bookings have soared so far in 2017 compared to last year, based on percentage increase.

Saskia Welman, spokesperson for Holiday Lettings, said:-

“This recent data highlighted Chesterfield as the fifth highest destination “on the rise” in England and tenth overall in the UK, with bookings rising by just over 100%.

“From our latest statistics, we can see that Chesterfield is a holiday destination increasingly in demand. With its historic character and proximity to glorious attractions like Chatsworth and the Peak District, it’s growing in popularity as an ideal base for an escape in rural England.

“Rentals themselves are becoming an ever more popular way to holiday. More and more travellers are seeing the advantages of rental accommodation as an alternative to traditional hotel stays. More space, more privacy, the freedom of feeling at home… and they offer unbeatable value, too.”

Second ‘Ernie Moss Day’ to be held

A second ‘Ernie Moss Day’ is being held next month, when Chesterfield play Port Vale, to pay tribute to the legendary former player.

Ernie, who is suffering from a form of dementia called ‘Pick’s Disease’, will be honoured when two of his old clubs meet at the Proact on Saturday, August 19.

The first Ernie Moss Day was staged when Chesterfield faced Port Vale two years ago, helping to raise awareness of dementia as well as honour the highly popular one-time forward.

With Ernie’s health sadly deteriorating, Spireites director & company secretary Ashley Carson felt that a second tribute should take place. He said:-

“Ernie is recognised as one of the club’s all-time greats and we will do all that we can to support him and his family.

“He is one of our own and I hope that fans will give generously on the day to support Ernie and help others affected by the awful effects of dementia.”

There will be bucket collections at the match, with the proceeds going to dementia charities. Ernie will go on the pitch and be introduced to the crowd and the special ‘Ernie 8’ ale, brewed by Brampton Brewery, will be on sale at the stadium.

There will be a section in the programme dedicated to Ernie’s career – with part of the purchase price donated to charity – and there are plans to produce a limited-edition t-shirt featuring an image of Ernie, with all the proceeds adding to the fundraising total.

The Moss family will provide flag bearers to greet the players as they run out and supporters will also be asked to applaud after eight minutes have gone in the match in recognition of Ernie’s old shirt number.

The Moss family said:-

”As a family we are delighted and honoured to have been asked by the club to participate in another Ernie Moss Day. Last time it was a huge success, raising a lot of money for amazing charities and giving us and the fans a wonderful day to remember.

“We hope to raise even more this year, with proceeds being split between the Alzheimer’s Society and Team Ernie. We would like to say a massive thank you to the club and to the fans for the ongoing support we receive, which is very much appreciated. Thanks also to the Port Vale fans for the support they have shown.

“Dad still loves attending matches and we’ll keep taking him to the Proact for as long as we can. We look forward to seeing everyone on August 19 to show our love and respect for Dad.”

Now 67, Ernie is Chesterfield’s record goalscorer, scoring a total of 191 goals over three spells with the club. He also netted 23 times for Port Vale in 74 appearances, with his career tally an impressive 245 goals in 749 league appearances.

After his playing career came to an end, he managed various non-league clubs including Gainsborough Trinity, Leek Town and Matlock Town.

Recuperating fan invited to dine with Spireites players

Dedicated Spireites fan Nial Brunt, who is recovering after an incident which left him requiring two operations, was invited to have lunch with the players on Friday.

Nial, 18, required emergency treatment after the incident five weeks ago, which also left his mother seriously injured.

Nial’s father Glen, who accompanied him at the Proact, explained:-

“He was taken to the Northern General Hospital and then transferred to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, where he had two separate operations.

“He had a shunt as a baby – which is a bleed in the brain where the fluid can’t escape – and he had to have a bypass put in place so it can be moved. However, this was damaged in the attack.

“He had a big operation to take it out and stitch his head together with around 200 stitches. They wanted to see how he would go on without the shunt but it didn’t work out.”

After dining with the players, Nial was presented with a home shirt by Ian Evatt, who said:-

“I was so sorry to hear what Nial had gone through and wanted him to have a memorable experience because I know how much the club means to him. I hope that Nial and his mum both soon make a full recovery.”

Nial attends Ashgate Croft School with his twin brother Reece and they will be going to Chesterfield College this year.

Glen, who has a season ticket with his family in the East Stand, added:-

“We are alright and we are still smiling. Nial has loved meeting the players and management and we really appreciate the invitation.

“We’ve been a bit occupied so we’ve had some catching up to do in terms of finding out about the new players.

“We are hoping to attend at least one of the pre-season matches this coming week.”

Club officials send their very best wishes to the Brunt family and look forward to seeing them at the Proact this season.

NAPIT Completes the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge for Ashgate Hospice

Team NAPIT completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge on the 22nd of June to raise money for Chesterfield based charity, Ashgate Hospicecare.

The challenge, which saw NAPIT tackle three mountains over 24 miles in 14 hours was physically and mentally draining for most. The team was made up of a variety of age ranges and abilities from a selection of departments at NAPIT and included Chief Executive Mike Andrews.

Many didn’t predict how tough the challenge would be, particularly taking on the inclines of the tallest peaks in Yorkshire which included Whernside, Inglebourgh and Pen-y-gent. At times the walk got emotional as it became a personal challenge for some as they dealt with overcoming their fears and pushed themselves harder than ever before. However, the team stuck together throughout the whole journey and supported one another.

The intent of the challenge was to raise much needed funds for Ashgate Hospicecare. NAPIT are currently participating in a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Scheme with the hospice to support and fundraise for the vital services it provides. Ashgate Hospicecare relies mainly on fundraising and donations from the public to continue providing free pain relief and symptom control services to patients with life limiting illnesses, and continue helping families in the Chesterfield area.

Mike Andrews, Cheif Executive of the NAPIT Group, said:-

“I can honestly say that the challenge proved harder than some of us expected and at times it was testing. I am so proud of everyone’s effort as a team, and in raising money for Ashgate Hospicecare and the vital services they provide to our local community. It’s thanks to all our supporters and team spirit that we made it as a group from start to finish.”

NAPIT will also be sponsoring Ashgate Hospicecare’s Open Air Cinema night on the 12th of August.

Chesterfield College Group inspires the next generation of engineers

Whittington Green School students were the latest group to take part in a whole day of hands on activities designed to give them a better understanding of the world of engineering and construction when 130 students visited Chesterfield College last week.

Chesterfield College Group is working with schools across Derbyshire to help excite young people about a career in engineering and construction to help find the 1.8 million new entrants to engineering who will be needed in UK by 2025.

The Engagement Team from the college launched their engineering taster sessions recently and has already delivered a whole range of inspiring sessions to hundreds of secondary school age children in the area by visiting schools and inviting groups into experience the facilities on offer at the college.

From welding to computer aided design, the students from Whittington Green had the opportunity to find out more about the range of careers open to engineers, as well as an insight into the routes they could take to develop the skills they will need.

Julie Richards, Principal and CEO of the Chesterfield College Group, said:-

“Every industry and every area of our lives depends on the work of engineers. That is why it is vital to work with schools to inspire the next generation to develop the skills they need to fill jobs of the future. We need to excite young people about science, technology, engineering and mathematics subjects and support them to make choices about the routes they can take to access the right experiences and qualifications for a career in engineering.”

Nigel Kingman, teacher from Whittington Green, said:-

“It is really important for us to broaden student’s experiences of what options they have after school. Coming to college gives them the chance to try a range of things which raises their awareness about the breadth of opportunities there are in the engineering sector. Having access to the more advanced facilities at college means we can really excite them and get them thinking about engineering as a career.”

Year 9 pupil Luke Headley, a pupil from Whittington Green School, said:-

“Everything is made and designed by engineers so we need more of them for the future. I’ve learnt a lot today and I really enjoyed the session on computer design. When you think about engineering, the first thing that comes to mind is welding and working with bits of metal.  I didn’t realise that a lot of the things we’ve had a chance to try today were classed as engineering so I’ve definitely learnt something new.”

Major cyber conference will question lack of corporate cyber security plans

Despite a second global ransomware attack in just two months, nearly half of businesses still do not have cyber security plans, latest research has shown.

The malicious coding originating in the Ukraine on Wednesday locked computers and demanded $300 in bitcoins to release them. Companies that refused to pay were warned they would permanently lose all their data.

Although not as vicious as the wannacry virus that almost shut down the NHS in May and attacked computer systems all over the world, the latest assault seemed to focus on ports and firms shipping goods globally.

Firms in Denmark, America, Argentina, Russia and China have so far reported being hit by the latest ransomware virus, which appears to operate on the same basic structure as wannacry.

The latest research was carried out by London-based accountancy, investment and tax group Smith and Williamson. It confirms earlier research, including some carried out by the British Chambers of Commerce, which found that cyber attacks now account for half of all UK crime, that two-thirds of companies have been attacked and 15% could have been hit ten times or more.

A year from now, under new General Data Protection Regulations, companies will face crippling penalties – up to four per cent of global turnover – if they don’t take measures to prevent data theft.

The importance of backing-up data, updating virus protection, ensuring software is up-to-date and coping with the growing risks posed by workers using cloud technology on company and personal smartphones, tablets and laptops while working away from the office, will also be on the agenda at a forthcoming major regional cyber security conference.

Andy Watterson, Business Crime Manager and cyber crime lead at East Midlands Chamber, said:-

“Cyber crime is a rapidly growing phenomenon. The potential for any organisation or individual to fall victim to increasingly clever cyber criminals gets bigger every day.

“But the threat is not just one of disruption, it’s also about the damage that can be done to reputations and the huge financial penalties companies will face from next year when the EU General Data Protection Regulations come into force,” he added.

Raising awareness of cyber threats plays a critical part in preventing them, Andy said, adding:-

“Companies are used to considering compliance, legal, fire and flood risks but, this latest research seems to confirm, still have not grasped the cyber risk.”

The East Midlands Cyber Security Conference and Expo, takes place at the Village Hotel, Chilwell, Nottingham, on Thursday 6 July. It is expected to bring together more than 150 business leaders, information security providers and key influencers to discuss the threats posed by online criminals and practical ways through which businesses can make themselves more resilient to cyber crime.

The event, which has been organised by East Midlands Chamber, is sponsored by Air-IT, an award-winning specialist deliverer of bespoke outsourced services including support, cyber security, backup and business continuity, consultancy, cloud, telephony and broadband and connectivity solutions.

Paul Judge, Marketing Director at Chamber patron Air-IT, said:-

“We’re delighted to be headline sponsor at this year’s East Midlands Chamber Cyber Security Conference and Expo. Highly regarded in the regional business calendar, the event helps bring together local businesses and leading experts in the field of cyber security.

“In wake of the recent global ransomware attacks, it’s essential that businesses take cyber security seriously and we’re keen to help delegates learn from this example through our keynote speech focusing on the wannacry attack. We’re aiming to give delegates a real insight into the ever-evolving threat landscape and growth in cyber crime.”

The Chamber has hosted a number of seminars across the region aimed at equipping local businesses with the information and knowledge they need to protect themselves online and will continue to work closely with local constabularies and national agencies to help push this agenda forward.

Ruby Pearce, from Britain’s Got Talent’s Perfect Pitch, shared some amazing words for her aunty, Julie Colton, who was cared for by Ashgate Hospicecare. She said:-

“Thank you so much for caring for my aunty.  I am really proud of absolutely everybody out there. Thank you and good luck!”
