Global Brands sales top £50 million

Sales continue to grow at independent drinks producer and distributor Global Brands, with the company reporting a 19.5% increase in total sales, taking turnover to over £50m for the financial year ending 30thSeptember 2018.

This follows 16% growth in the previous financial year (2016-17) and sees gross profit rise from £11.8m to £14m for 2017-2018. Global Brands sold around 60million drinks during the last year, with its brands now available in 58 countries.

The Chesterfield based company, which was founded in 1997, saw the value of exports grow by 21% year-on-year, pinpointing strong demand for its drinks in Belgium, Italy and South Africa. In 2018, Global Brands secured a listing for its Franklin & Sons range in South Africa’s largest retailer, Pick N Pay, which is selling the British company’s premium tonics, mixers and soft drinks in over 1,100 stores.

Founder and chairman of Global Brands, Steve Perez, explains: “The drinks industry is so strangled by needless bureaucracy, it limits original ideas. Our company growth is being driven by an innovative and entrepreneurial team that’s encouraged to do things differently. They’re constantly looking at how they can create new drinks that justify a place on supermarket shelves and in the fridges of bars, late-night venues and restaurants around the world.

“The team’s innovative thinking is rooted in what consumers want and working with our customers to quickly meet demand. It led to the creation of premium canned cocktail All Shook Up and one that’s now a top seller in one of the UK’s largest supermarkets.

“Drinkstagramming and other social media trends mean drinks now need to look as good as they taste. This drives sales. Premium quality tasting drinks, packaged in sleek and stylish cans meant that we exceeded original sales targets for All Shook Up, selling more than 2m cans in just ten months following launch.”

The success of All Shook Up saw Global Brands add a third canned cocktail – fruity flavoured Flamingo Colada – to the original line-up of two flavours; Passionfruit Martini and Espresso Martini.

The company also expanded its range of award-winning premium tonics, mixers and soft drinks, Franklin & Sons, adding the ‘Flavour Collection’ four new dual-flavoured tonics and three Infused Sodas were added, which saw total sales volumes grow by 101% for the year ending 30th September 2018.

Steve adds: “The low and no-alcohol, mindful drinking trend is growing, and consumers want soft drinks that offer depth of flavour and the same experience as an alcoholic serve. The Infused Sodas do this. The three flavours in the range are based on the complexities and finish of a high-end cocktail and they’ve been created to be served over ice, in a tall wine glass and with a fruit garnish. People opting for no-alcohol choices don’t want second-rate drinks.”

The Infused Sodas are just 49 calories per 275ml bottle and come in three unique flavours; Fragrant Guava & Persian Lime with Root Ginger, Exotic Pineapple & Aromatic Cardamom with Cracked Cubeb Pepper, and Succulent Pomegranate & Floral Hibiscus with Delicate Rose.

Steve concludes: “The company was founded on innovation and entrepreneurialism with the creation of vodka-based Ready To Drink (RTD) VK. Survey confirms Brexit doubt is stifling business

Brexit doubt is stifling business, the results of the latest survey by award-winning East Midlands Chamber* have confirmed.

Companies are suffering cash flow problems and have lost confidence to invest in premises, plant and people.

According to the first Quarterly Economic Survey of 2019, cash flow concerns are at their worst since the end of the financial crisis in 2012.

Stockpiling in preparation for an unruly Brexit and businesses ‘stretching’ supplier’s payment schedules to shore up their own position as doubt and uncertainty continue were cited as two main drivers of worsening cash flow.

Scott Knowles, Chief Executive at the Chamber, said: “Unlike 2012, the figures here are not related to access to finance but, instead, are directly attributable to Brexit preparedness and the knock-on impact this is having on business.

“There is undoubtedly a level of stockpiling affecting cash flow, with an inevitable knock-on effect on payments as businesses seek to secure their own positions.

“Cash flow issues might also be part of the story behind decreased levels of investment intentions. While an understandable and rational reaction from business, this runs counter to UK Government’s plans to boost business investment and grow UK productivity.”

The Q1 QES found a net score of only 18% of firms reporting intentions to invest in training, the lowest score since immediately after the Brexit referendum in 2016.

Scott said: “A key difference between then and now are the drivers of that score. After the referendum, the key factors pulling down the overall score were concerned with confidence and investment, both of which took a short-term hit.

“In the latest survey, the main drivers behind the lower score are reported as actual sales, orders and cash flow for both domestic and overseas activity – making this less about sentiment and more about actual activity levels.”

The Q1 2019 QES results compound a slowdown seen in Q4 of 2018 and appear across all economic markers in the survey, resulting in a fall in the Chamber’s State of the Economy Index to its lowest level since the aftermath of the financial crash in 2012.

“The fact that these problems are of a political rather than structural nature does potentially offer some relief,” said Scott.

“In a scenario where we have a swift resolution to Brexit – or at least a clear and predictable path to a resolution – we could see cash flow and investment return to normal levels, with growing confidence following. However, if we experience continued uncertainty, this may exacerbate what is already a significant problem for SMEs.

“In worst case scenarios, long-term struggles with cash flow could start to see some organisations struggle with viability and some of their frustrations turn to genuine anguish as real-world impacts of political bickering start to bite,” he added.

New Iceland Store Set to Open at Vicar Lane

Vicar Lane Shopping Centre in Chesterfield has announced the opening of a brand new Iceland store on Tuesday 16th April 2019.

The new store at Vicar Lane is in a prime location in the heart of the town’s shopping district, offering its customers a convenient alternative to the supermarket offer already in the town.

New Car Retailer Opens its Doors in Chesterfield

The Car Store, a used car retailer, has opened on Eastside Road in Chesterfield.

The new custom-built dealership, is home to in excess of 350 used cars and employs 40 members of staff.

Premier Inn get the keys to new hotel

The multi-million-pound transformation of the former Co-op department store on Elder Way in Chesterfield has been completed by Jomast Developments.

The fully accessible 92-bed hotel, which is located in the building’s upper two floors, has now been handed over to Premier Inn ahead of its opening by the hotel chain on 11 April 2019.

Occupying a pivotal site in the town centre, Elder Way is a landmark mixed-use leisure scheme, which is breathing life into the town’s famous 1930s, Mock-Tudor former Co-op.

The building was acquired by Jomast Developments in 2016 with work on the new hotel beginning last year. As part of the transformation, the building’s exterior has been restored to its former glory.

Premier Inn is the first occupier of the building and paves the way for Jomast to now transform the basement and ground floor into leisure and hospitality space.

Jomast is one of the UK’s leading property development, investment and regeneration specialists. The Chesterfield site is the company’s first development in Derbyshire.

Commenting on the handover to Premier Inn, Mark Hill, Commercial Property Director at Jomast Developments said: “I am delighted that we have been able to preserve such an iconic building in Chesterfield. The position and location of the site at times has been challenging but our ongoing collaboration with Chesterfield Borough Council has enabled us to bring this much-loved building back into use. I am confident that Premier Inn will be a welcome addition to the town centre and the Northern Gateway Scheme.”

Thirty-eight jobs have been created at the new hotel, however jobs will be delivered by the Elder Way development as a whole once completed by Jomast.

Work will now begin on the transformation of the 16,000 sq ft basement and 21,000 sq ft ground floor area into leisure space which Jomast is targeting at independent operators. The ground floor units will all benefit from their own shop fronts/entrances. Additionally, Jomast will be creating a new courtyard area for outside eating/drinking. Chesterfield Borough Council will also shortly begin work to refurbish the public realm to the Elder Way frontage and widen public footpaths.

Mark added: “We are now in a position to move forward with phase 2 of Elder Way and the transformation of the basement and ground floor into self-contained units. We anticipate high interest from lifestyle and hospitality operators based in Chesterfield and the surrounding areas.”

The development is part of the Chesterfield Borough Council-led Northern Gateway scheme which will also see a new multi-storey car park completed later this year and work will begin on a new enterprise centre for small to medium sized businesses on part of the site of Holywell Cross (Donut) car park.

Chesterfield based accountancy firm name new joint managing partners

Joint managing partners have taken up position at Yorkshire and North Derbyshire’s leading accountancy firm.

Audit partner Lisa Leighton and corporate finance partner Hamish Morrison took the reins at BHP – which has offices in Chesterfield, Sheffield, Cleckheaton, Leeds,  and York – on 1 April 2019.

Both aged 45, Lisa began at BHP as a graduate in 1995 and Hamish joined BHP Corporate Finance as partner in 2012 with 20 years’ experience in the sector. Each will maintain responsibility for their current portfolio of clients.

Outgoing managing partner of 10 years, John Warner, will continue at the firm full-time as senior partner to manage his portfolio of clients.

At the start of his term as managing partner, John set out the firm’s first five-year strategy which, along with the subsequent five-year plan, achieved the aim of transforming BHP into the largest independent firm in Yorkshire.

From two offices and turnover of £8m in 2009, BHP now has five offices, turnover approaching £22m and is ranked number 35 of accounting firms in the UK.

John said: “BHP’s history is built on the ability to continuously adapt and stay at the forefront of the industry. It’s with this ethos that we continue to thrive today and I am fully confident in this next step for our business.

Specsavers Matlock and Chesterfield donate food to combat child hunger

With one in five UK children suffering from food poverty, Specsavers in Matlock and Chesterfield are thanking customers in the local community, after they joined forces to collect food to help those in need.

Generous staff and their families held an in-store food drive, collecting a range of the most needed food items in support of the Chesterfield Foodbank.

Last week, the stores’ staff also volunteered at the foodbank, lending a hand to sort through the food at the warehouse, helping the foodbank cope with the influx of donated food.

“Chesterfield Foodbank is an amazing charity – helping local families when they need it most with their crisis food packages. We are proud to have played our part in helping, and the volunteering session really brought our team together too” said Audiologist Juliet Metterick.

She continues: “It was nice to try something different and also feel that we are giving back to our community. If you have a couple of hours to spare I strongly recommend volunteering like we did.”

Work has started for latest investor at Markham Vale

Work has started on Sheffield-based Protec International’s new site, which is set to create up to 45 new jobs at Markham Vale.Protec International is the leading supplier of flame retardant temporary protection materials approved by the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) to the construction industry.

Stephen Cox, Managing Director of Protec International, said:

“We look forward to moving into our new base at Markham Vale later this year, pushing ahead with our growth plans which will create up to 45 new jobs across both phases. The location couldn’t be better for accessing the national motorway network, and will allow us to continue delivering our range of building protection solutions to our construction industry clients on a next-day basis.”

The firm’s new warehouse and offices will be in addition to a number of bases across the country.

Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Regeneration, Councillor Tony King, said:

“It was great to meet Protec and visit where their new base will be at Markham Vale and we’re pleased work is now underway.“The firm will be a fantastic addition to the site and it’s great to hear they’re looking to create up to 45 new jobs for local people too.“Markham’s excellent location off Junction 29A of the M1 will be great for Protec and we’re pleased that the site continues to attract a range of companies that can grow and thrive there.”

The firm’s new 5.39 acre base with opportunity to expand is set to be completed by September and will be designed and built by the county council’s private sector property partner, Henry Boot Developments (HBD) on Markham Vale North.

Fancy Dress Fun Day brings in the dough for Comic Relief at Specsavers Chesterfield

Staff at Specsavers Chesterfield donned their Pyjamas and Slippers for a day of fundraising in support of Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day 2019.

Along with the Fancy Dress, they truly got into the Red Nose Day spirit with competitions, collections and a bake sale in a bid to raise money for good causes

The amount raised on the day itself went into the store’s Comic Relief pot, which already had hundreds of pounds donated throughout the month from the sale of Red Nose Day glasses. In total, customers and staff raised a huge £1,000 throughout the month!

Amazon to create 200 new permanent jobs with the opening of a new fulfilment centre in Chesterfield

Amazon today announced plans to open a new fulfilment centre in Chesterfield and begin recruitment for more than 200 new permanent jobs.   Amazon’s new investment will help meet customer demand, expand selection and enable SMEs selling on Amazon Marketplace to scale their businesses.

“We are delighted to open a new Amazon building in Chesterfield and begin recruitment for more than 200 new permanent roles with competitive wages and comprehensive benefits starting on day one,” said Stefano Perego, Amazon’s VP of UK Customer Fulfilment. “We are very much looking forward to welcoming a new team, who will play a crucial role in delivering a first rate level of service for our customers.”

Amazon fulfilment centre employees receive competitive pay and comprehensive benefits from day one. Pay starts at £10.50 in the London area and £9.50 for the rest of the UK for all full-time, part-time, temporary and seasonal employees working in the company’s fulfilment centres. Employees are offered a comprehensive benefits package, including private medical insurance, life assurance, income protection, subsidized meals and an employee discount, which combined are worth more than £700 annually, as well as a company pension plan.
