Chamber delivers ‘importance of exporting’ message in new videos

The East Midlands Chamber’s Head of International Trade, Laura Howard, has appeared in videos designed to encourage exporting.

They were shot by David James, a specialist in business and strategic communications and producer of the UK Export Advice podcast, with the support of East Midlands Airport.

In each of the videos, Laura talks about the help the Chamber can give to companies looking to increase sales by moving into overseas markets.

The videos were filmed to coincide with the airport’s announcement of record-breaking quantities of freight handling in the year ending March 2018.

In the previous 12 months the airport, Britain’s busiest for dedicated freight handling, saw almost £10bn worth of non-EU goods pass through it and in total 358,477 tonnes of cargo were exported or imported through the airport – 9.7% higher than the previous year.

Laura appears alongside Sir John Peace – Chairman at Midlands Engine, Ian Harrison – Director of Exports at the Department for International Trade, Adriaan Vickery – Chair of the Board of Directors at the East Midlands International Trade Association and Howard Ebison – Commercial Director at East Midlands Airport.

Also featured in the videos are Dr Nik Kotecha, Chief Executive at Morningside Pharmaceuticals and Chair of the Chamber’s Brexit Business Advisory Group, and Ximena Shelton, Director at Shelton’s Coffee. Both businesses are Chamber members and exporters.

One of the points Laura makes in the videos is that the Chamber is a vast “network of businesses, many of which have already gone down the export route and are more than willing to share, peer to peer, their knowledge and experience of the export journey”.

Laura said: “Britain is currently a net importer of materials, goods and services. It would significantly help our balance of payments if we could become a net exporter and there are huge opportunities on the global stage for those willing to take the first step and explore overseas markets.

“If you have a product or service to sell, why restrict yourself to small domestic markets when there is so much help available to steer you through your exporting journey.”

Banner Jones signs up to support terminally ill workers

Banner Jones Solicitors has become the latest business to officially sign up to the TUC Dying to Work Charter, an initiative put in place to highlight the firm’s commitment to treating its staff with respect and dignity should they receive a terminal diagnosis.

The first law firm to sign up to the charter, Banner Jones, a law firm operating across South Yorkshire, Derbyshire and the East Midlands, is proud to be supporting its workers in a way that enables them freedom of choice with regards to their career should they be diagnosed with a terminal illness.

In the UK, there is currently no protection from dismissal for people with terminal illnesses and so the Dying to Work Charter is instrumental in ensuring workers get the support they require.

The Charter is part of the TUC’s wider Dying to Work campaign which is seeking greater security for terminally ill workers where they cannot be dismissed as a result of their condition. Whilst, in some situations, a person may decide that they do not want to continue working, in other cases, workers with a terminal illness may elect to continue working for as long as they can, whether it be for financial security or as a valuable distraction.

Dying to Work was taken forward by the TUC following the case of Jacci Woodcook, an area sales manager from Derbyshire, who was forced out of her job three years ago after being diagnosed with terminal breast cancer.

The Lounges to open Sorbo Lounge in former Chesterfield Post Office

The Lounges, the West Country based restaurant/café/bar group is opening a brand-new site in Chesterfield on Wednesday 8th August 2018. Sorbo Lounge will open on Market Place, creating 25 jobs for local people.

The Lounges have spent £500k transforming the site into a family-friendly retro-inspired cosy retreat, where eclectic artwork and quirky curios sit next to oversized vintage sofas and old school benches, strikingly painted table tops and statement lighting, in the eclectic style much loved by Lounge aficionados.

Particular attention has been paid to families – there is a fine selection of games and books, colouring pencils and pads, a full menu just for Little Loungers and high chairs and baby-change facilities are available for the tiny ones.

Spire Radio to broadcast Chesterfield FC match updates

Two Chesterfield Champions are joining forces to bring fans of Chesterfield FC live updates from matches in the Vanarma National League. Spire Radio are delighted to announce that they are an official media partner of Chesterfield FC for the 2018/19 National League campaign.

When Chesterfield begin their new season on August 4th away at Ebsfleet there will be a new team bringing live updates to Spireites during the match. Alan Wilkinson, known to many fans simply as Big Al, will be leading the live updates from the stadium while Adam Marsden leads the team back in the studio.

Spire Sports presenter, Adam Marsden said “It’s a great opportunity for the station and the club to build on our already strong partnership. Training academy celebrates success of learners

On July 18th 2018, Chesterfield-based training provider One to One Support Services, Training Academy held its annual Celebration of Learning event in Hasland. This event recognised the achievements and successess of learners, along with their employers and partners who have supported with the students’ progression.

This year’s winner for Apprentice of the Year 16-18 was Toni Raynes from Chantreyland Children’s Nursery. Last December she completed her Level 2 Childcare qualification. The team she works with were so impressed with her level of commitment they put them onto her Level 3 childcare qualification as soon as possible.

The Outstand Performer Award went to Barry Green of One to One Support Services. He had overcome extreme fears about completing a qualification, his tutor says he has never missed an appointment; he is always on time and willing to spend the time to develop his knowledge. Even his manager says he is a confident worker who you can always depend on. He has overcome all of his worries and completed his qualification with flying colours.

The Employer of the Year award winner was the Chantreyland Children’s Nursery. One to One has worked with them for some time and always find they have gone the extra mile, they are always willing and open for our tutors to spend time with the learners. By allowing this in turn this develops the apprentice allowing the workplace to benefit from the skills that they go on to develop.

Another winner of the day was Bisharo Omar. She won the Level 1 Development Award for Sheffield. Bisharo had joined the City and Guilds accredited Level 1 in Health and Social Care/Children and Young People course ran by the Training Academy team and managed to secure a position at One to One Support Services. She supports a number of our clients and since joining One to One as a Community Care Assistant everyone only has fantastic things to say about her. Her manager describes her as a confident woman who uses her own initiative and has become a fantastic part of the team.

The celebration also honoured employers who have given learners the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in their place of work and contributed to their practical skills learning.

Chesterfield’s visitor economy to take centre stage at town’s annual Investment Summit

Chesterfield’s burgeoning visitor economy and how it can be used to further regenerate the area, is set to be the focus of the town’s upcoming Investment Summit, taking place on Wednesday 19 September at Casa Hotel.

Rupert Carr, Director of Birchall Properties, the company behind Peak Resort, and James Berresford, Chair of the Derbyshire Culture Heritage and Tourism Board and former CEO of Visit England have been announced as the keynote speakers at the free event.

They will be joined by Adam Hearld of Jomast Developments, which is transforming the former Co-op building, and Huw Bowen, Chief Executive of Chesterfield Borough Council.

Organised by Destination Chesterfield, Derbyshire Economic Partnership and Marketing Derby and part funded by the European Regional Development Fund, the annual Investment Summit, is designed to update the property industry and the business community on the latest investment opportunities in Chesterfield and North Derbyshire.

As well as the keynote speakers, there will be an update on regeneration sites across North Derbyshire, exhibitors from key regeneration sites and a question and answer panel with speakers and local decision makers.

Commenting on the Summit, Peter Swallow, Chair of Destination Chesterfield and Derbyshire Economic Partnership Board Member, said: “With Chesterfield’s location and connectivity within the UK, the town has always had a unique appeal to investors.

Global leader announces investment at Markham Vale

D2N2 Announces New Chair

Elizabeth Fagan, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Boots, has been appointed Chair of the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership.

She succeeds Peter Richardson OBE, who has been Chair of D2N2 since 2012.

D2N2 is the Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) for Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. It works with businesses, local authorities, skills and training providers and community and voluntary sector organisations, to grow the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire economy.

Under Peter’s watch, the D2N2 LEP has already exceeded its original target of creating 55,000 new jobs in ten years – from 2013 to 2023 – and is now working on a new Strategic Economic Plan and Local Industrial Strategy for the cities, towns and rural areas in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

Elizabeth said:-

“I am very pleased to be joining as the Chair of the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership at this important time in its development. This area is home to world-class businesses and knowledge bases, has a hard-working talent pool, a vibrant cultural offering and is a beautiful place to live, work and visit.”

“I believe that the power of D2N2 lies in the intersection between public and private companies and I hope that some of my experience will help make a positive difference. I look forward to working with business and local partners to create and deliver a new strategy for high value economic growth that benefits all our communities.”

Paying tribute to the work of her predecessor, Elizabeth said:-

“I thank Peter for the work that he has done as Chair of the LEP. He has been at the heart of D2N2’s successes to date and I wish him every success in future roles.”

Since 2012, Peter has overseen:

  • The creation of D2N2’s original Strategic Economic Plan, in which the target of creating 55,000 new jobs and the means to create them, were devised
  • Extensive lobbying for the planned High Speed Rail Line (HS2) to come through the D2N2 area, resulting in an ‘East Midlands Hub’, at Toton, Nottinghamshire, and a maintenance depot at Staveley, Derbyshire
  • Support for the growth of the Nottingham and Derby Enterprise Zone, from the opening of Medicity, part of the Boots Enterprise Zone site in November 2013, right through to the continued development of each of the Nottingham and Derby Enterprise Zone sites today
  • The signing of the D2N2 Growth Deal with Government, which secured £174m in Local Growth Funding for projects in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire to improve infrastructure and create jobs and which has since been increased to £250m.
  • Launch of the D2N2 Growth Hub – a free and impartial support and advice service for businesses across the D2N2 area, which has helped over 6,000 businesses to date.

Peter also led each of D2N2’s five previous annual conferences and AGMs. The D2N2 Annual Conference on July 24 will be his last with the LEP. The formal handover to Elizabeth will take place at the conference.

Peter said:-

“During my time as D2N2’s Chairman, I’ve seen a lot of change locally, regionally and nationally. The D2N2 area, the East Midlands and the UK as a whole are all very different places from when I first took the role.

“Elizabeth will face a completely different set of challenges from those I faced as I helped bring together and lead a team of people who are helping the D2N2 area be the best that it possibly can be, meeting adversity with solutions and ensuring that the region makes the most of every opportunity.

“I stick true to my belief that, now more than ever, the D2N2 area is the UK’s most inspirational postcode.

“I wish Elizabeth all the very best as she takes over the reins at D2N2. I am confident she is the right person for the job and has the best possible team to support her.”

Chesterfield unemployment figure falls

The percentage of people out of work in the Chesterfield has fallen according to figures released this morning by the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Figures for those claiming job seekers in Chesterfield was down with 1,645 claimants recorded down from 1,675 the previous month.

The number of people in work in the East Midlands between March and May 2018 was higher than for the same period last year and two years ago, according to figures released this morning.

Data from the Office for National Statistics showed there were 2,285,777 people in work in the region, 30,421 higher than for the same three months in 2017 and 19,977 more than in 2016.

Compared with the same period in 2016, there were 6,245 fewer people unemployed in the East Midlands between March and May 2018 at 100,287.

Unemployment, however, was 10,625 higher in the period this year than it was last year and 1,256 up compared with three months between December and February.

The ONS also reported that unemployment for the region, which was on a par with the national average at 4.2%, was 1,256 higher between March and May this year than was recorded for the December to February period.

Scott Knowles, Chief Executive at East Midlands Chamber, said:-

“For a long time, the East Midlands has enjoyed fairly robust employment, usually bettering national average figures when it comes to job creation and the percentage of people out of work.

“While it’s too early to suggest trends or talk about economic slumps, the gap between the region and the national picture has been closing in recent months.

“There can be little doubt that Brexit is playing its part in these figures. The clock is ticking and business has yet to receive any useful information from the UK Government or Brussels about what our trading relationship with the EU will be after March next year.

“The lack of guidance is leading to uncertainty, which is bound to manifest itself as we get closer to the deadline, so I think it’s quite reasonable to expect businesses to hold off on investment and recruitment.

“That said, 67% of the firms that completed our second Quarterly Economic Survey of 2018 said they wanted to recruit but many were struggling to find suitably skilled or qualified staff, which suggests there is still an underlying business confidence.

“What is important now is that our Government does not cause that confidence to wan and delivers a Brexit for business instead of constantly bickering about it.”

Other figures released by the ONS this morning show that the claimant count has fallen across the whole of Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire, down 1,015 to 35,545 in June 2018 compared with the previous month.

Apprentice vacancies available at new Chesterfield development

Four aspiring tradespeople could soon commence their construction careers as triple HBF 5 star housebuilder, William Davis Homes announces vacancies at its Skylarks development in Chesterfield.

Young people aged 16 and over from Chesterfield and the neighbouring area are encouraged to apply for the trade apprenticeships currently available with William Davis Homes. In partnership with Chesterfield Borough Council and Chesterfield College, the company is offering placements for an apprentice bricklayer, joiner, electrician and painter/decorator to work on its Skylarks development on the northern edge of the Derbyshire market town.
