Funding available to support warm and welcoming spaces across Chesterfield this winter

Community groups, charities and venues across Chesterfield are being invited to apply for funding to help deliver warm and welcoming spaces for residents during the colder months.

Grants of up to £750 are available to eligible voluntary and community sector organisations and community-led groups in the borough. The funding is being provided by the Chesterfield Health and Wellbeing Partnership, which receives support from Public Health at Derbyshire County Council. Local coordination is being led by Chesterfield Borough Council.

Warm and welcoming spaces offer local people a place to enjoy a hot drink, take part in activities and socialise. These hubs aim to support residents throughout winter by offering a warm, friendly place to gather. They also help tackle loneliness by creating opportunities for people to connect and access mental health support and advice.

Councillor Steve Lismore, Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing at Chesterfield Borough Council, said:

“Chesterfield has a strong and compassionate community network. We’re once again working together to make sure that our communities are supported this winter.”

“Thanks to funding from the Chesterfield Health and Wellbeing Partnership we are once again inviting local charities, community groups and community venues to apply for funding to help with the cost of operating these spaces.

These spaces are so valuable in our communities – not only providing a warm place to enjoy a free hot drink or snack, but they are helping to tackle loneliness by creating new ways for people to connect with one another and access mental health support and advice.”

Organisations can use the funding to continue running existing warm and welcoming spaces or to launch new hubs that support local residents through the winter.

Grants can be used to cover a range of project costs, including:

  • Additional energy costs
  • Furniture and improvements to facilities
  • Staffing costs to cover extended hours
  • Cleaning costs to meet health protection guidance
  • Activities and refreshments
  • Additional activity costs

How to apply for funding

For more information or to request an application form, please contact: Wendy Blunt at Chesterfield Borough Council by email: wendy.blunt@chesterfield.gov.uk or 01246 959657.

Chesterfield Champion Adorn celebrates 15 years

Chesterfield Champion, Adorn Jewellers is marking a milestone celebrating 15 years of business in the heart of the town centre.

Nestled in the historic Middle Shambles, Adorn Jewellers of Chesterfield has become a destination for those seeking individual, inspirational, and independent jewellery. The business was founded by husband-and-wife team Laura Jo and Adam Owen, who opened the shop on 25 November 2010, during one of the heaviest snowfalls in the town’s history.

Laura Jo recalls the dramatic launch. She said: “We had to dig ourselves in and there was a feeling of what have we done? I wondered if we’d see anyone at all. But customers came and kept coming.“

“Our customers are at the very heart of our business,” explains Adam. “Their support and encouragement is beyond comparison. We feel very lucky.”

Affectionately referring to their loyal customers as “our Sparklies,” Laura Jo says the shop’s success is also down to the diverse range of jewellery they offer. Adorn works with a variety of designers – from small independents to established brands – to curate high-quality, eye-catching pieces designed to stand out.

The team, including their beloved Cairn Terriers Heathcliff and Moriarty, continues to innovate. A recent website relaunch and the introduction of lab-grown diamond collections reflect Adorn’s forward-thinking approach and commitment to evolving with the high street.

“The high street has definitely changed in the time we’ve been here,” says Laura Jo. “We’re hopeful that the increase in town centre living, along with footfall driven by social media and online discovery, means we’ll be sparkling here in Middle Shambles for many years to come.”

As they mark this milestone, Laura Jo and Adam have a heartfelt message for their customers: “A huge sparkling thank you,” says Laura Jo. “Your support means more than you know,” adds Adam.

If you’re looking for a unique gift this Christmas, Adorn Jewellers offers a treasure trove of distinctive pieces and exceptional customer service.

Diwali celebrations illuminate Chesterfield with culture, creativity and community spirit

A vibrant programme of Diwali celebrations has united communities across Chesterfield and North Derbyshire, showcasing acclaimed performers, engaging cultural workshops, and sand artistry.

Hosted by the Asian Association, the flagship event Echoes of the Soul took place at the Winding Wheel Theatre in October. It attracted over 200 attendees including local dignitaries such as MP Toby Perkins, Mayor Councillor Barry Dyke and Mayoress Marie Dyke, and councillors from Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire District Council.

The evening featured a dynamic fusion of Indian and Irish dance traditions, with performances by Kumar Sharma and the Kathak Rockers, alongside Belfast’s Irish Entertainment Group. Internationally renowned sand artist Sudam Pradhan captivated audiences with live sand animation and built a Crooked Spire model from 280kg of repurposed sand.

A charity raffle held during the event raised several hundred pounds for Ashgate Hospice, further highlighting the community spirit of the occasion.

Asian Association Diwali Celebrations

Creative workshops

In addition to the main event, Sudam Pradhan, who runs his own sand sculpture museum in India, led a sand sculpture workshop for local students at Grassmoor Pavillion.

The renowned sand sculptor travels the world, creating stunning sand artworks for events and competitions. He inspired twenty-six children, including home-educated students, and their parents and guardians, and showed them how to create their own animal sculptures using the same sand later used for the Crooked Spire model.

Sudam’s visit also included a special performance at Ashgate Hospice, bringing joy to patients, families, and staff through music and movement.

A spokesperson from the Asian Association said: “It was an honour to host Sudam here in Chesterfield and bring something totally different to the town. Whilst here, Sudam wanted to build something local people could connect with, so it had to be Chesterfield’s most well-known landmark! He took real care to make sure he got the ‘crookedness’ of the spire just right!”

“The children absolutely loved learning some simple techniques to use the sand to make models and then using them to sculpt their own sand animals.”

Chesterfield Champion launches AI service to help local businesses

Software consultancy, Magnifica Technologies has launched a new service which makes it easier for local businesses to access and benefit from artificial intelligence.

Named Kanvus.ai, the service combines expert advice with an easy-to-use digital platform to help automate everyday tasks. That could involve speeding up admin, creating reports, generating digital content, or linking up tools like Office 365, Xero, Google, websites and customer databases.

The idea came from Magnifica’s work with businesses across Derbyshire and further afield. Founder of Magnifica Technologies, Rob Gregory says that while interest in AI is growing fast, many organisations are unsure how to move from testing ideas to using AI in real life.

“AI can feel out of reach for a lot of businesses,” said Rob. “Our goal with Kanvus is to show that it doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive.

“We work with clients to identify where AI can have an immediate impact, whether that’s speeding up internal admin or improving customer experience. We then deliver a working solution they can call their own.”

Magnifica Technologies has been part of Chesterfield’s growing digital sector for over a decade and continues to support innovation in the local economy. With Kanvus.ai, the company hopes more organisations will explore how AI can help them stay competitive and adapt to a fast-changing business world.

Peak Edge Hotel bucks UK hospitality trend with strong year of growth

Peak Edge, a 4-star family-owned countryside retreat on the edge of the Peak District. The hotel has reported strong year-on-year growth across all areas of its business.

Between October 2024 and July 2025, the hotel recorded:

  • +9% net revenue in food

  • +26% venue-hire revenue from weddings and events

  • +9.4% accommodation net revenue

Managing Director Mark Thurman said: “The wider UK hospitality sector has faced rising costs and softer consumer spending. Our setting on the edge of the Peak District is a real draw, and our farm-to-fork dining and attention to guest experience continue to resonate.”

Owner Steve Perez added: “This hotel and the surrounding landscape are part of my family story. That deep sense of place runs through everything we do.”

While demand and revenue are strong, margins remain tight due to rising food, energy and supplier costs, as well as recent tax changes. Plans for additional bedrooms and a spa have been paused. The designs are ready, and growth will continue when conditions improve.

Dating back to 1788, Peak Edge blends rustic heritage with contemporary comfort. The hotel has 27 individually designed rooms and offers award-winning dining. Its success shows that quality, authenticity and innovation remain key to business in the Chesterfield area.

Employers urged to inspire and recruit local talent

Businesses across Chesterfield are encouraged to play a vital role in developing the town’s future workforce by actively engaging with local schools.

Local employers are invited to participate in activities that provide students with invaluable exposure to the world of work, including:

  • Attending careers fairs
  • Supporting mock interviews
  • Participating in employer Q&A sessions
  • Offering work experience placements for students

These activities also allow businesses to identify and nurture emerging talent early.

Schools seeking to collaborate with employers this year include Brookfield Community School, Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School, Outwood Academy Hasland Hall, Outwood Academy Newbold, Parkside Community School, Springwell Community College, St Mary’s Catholic High School, Tupton Hall, Whittington Green School, and Netherthorpe School.

There is also an opportunity to work with Chesterfield College and the University of Derby students.

The aim is to strengthen links between education and business, giving young people real-world experience and guidance to help shape their career paths.

Andy Kelly, Headteacher at Parkside Community School, highlights the value of collaboration between local schools and businesses. He said:

“When businesses and schools work together, they have a powerful impact on the future of young people. Activities like mock interviews, careers fairs, and Q&A sessions offer students meaningful insights into the world of work – helping them build confidence, raise aspirations and make informed career choices.

“At Parkside Community School, we are committed to preparing our students for life beyond the classroom. We welcome and encourage Chesterfield businesses to get involved. Together, we can inspire the next generation and ensure they’re equipped and motivated to contribute to the success of the local economy.

Diane Beresford, Chair of the Chesterfield Skills and Employment Partnership and Deputy CEO of East Midlands Chamber said:

“Engaging with schools isn’t just about giving back – it’s a strategic move for businesses looking to future proof their workforce. By connecting with students early, businesses can identify emerging talent, shape young people’s understanding of industry expectations, and build awareness of the career paths available locally.

This collaboration allows businesses to influence the skills being developed, ensuring they align with real-world needs. It’s also a chance to raise your company’s profile among future employees and gain fresh insights into the mindset of the next generation entering the workforce.”

Ivan Fomin, Board member of Destination Chesterfield and Managing Director of MSE Hiller said:

“We’ve seen first-hand the value of engaging with local schools. By offering work experience placements and participating in careers events, we’ve been able to connect with young people who are enthusiastic, curious, and eager to learn. It’s helped us raise awareness of the career opportunities available in engineering and manufacturing, while also giving us insight into the expectations and aspirations of the next generation. Attend the next recruitment event

Local people looking for work are encouraged to attend the upcoming recruitment event at Chesterfield Town Hall on 21 and 22 October.

The two-day event offers the opportunity to engage with employers from a wide range of sectors. Attendees can discover how local organisations recruit and what they look for in new employees.

On Tuesday, 21 October, from 1pm to 4pm, visitors can meet directly with employers. They’ll gain insight into recruitment processes and learn how to strengthen applications and interview performance.

The second day, Wednesday, 22 October, from 9am to 12pm, will feature employer-led workshops focusing on recruitment and career pathways. These sessions will provide more detailed information about available roles and offer participants the opportunity to apply for current vacancies.

Both days of the event are free to attend, and anyone looking for work are welcome to drop in – no booking is required. People interested in the workshops on the second day are encouraged to attend the first day. This gives them a chance to meet employers, learn about available opportunities, and book a place.

A range of employers will be represented, including organisations from the public sector, care sector, and beyond. Employers attending include Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Derbyshire Constabulary, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, East Midlands Ambulance Service, East Midlands Combined County Authority, and several social care providers.

Councillor Tricia Gilby, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council and Vice Chair of the Skills and Employment Partnership, said:

“This recruitment event is a great opportunity for people to engage directly with employers, as well as find out more about training and education pathways from local providers. It’s also a good chance to get practical careers support and guidance, which could really help people to move jobs, change careers or take their first steps into the workplace.

As a council, we want to ensure that everyone can benefit from a growing local economy, and through working in partnership with businesses and the community sector, we can help local people develop the skills to progress in their careers or access new opportunities as they become available.”

Brian Grant, from Joined Up Careers, which is part of Derby and Derbyshire Integrated Care Board, added:

“We are delighted to be working this year in partnership with Chesterfield Borough Council to showcase the work of employers and providers on making opportunities available to all across the Chesterfield area. The Inclusive Recruitment Festival continues this important work on widening participation in employment and improving inclusion to help employers represent the true diversity of the local population.

We are aware of the invaluable contribution that all members of our diverse local communities can make. Our aim is to improve access to employment and career opportunities as well as to sources of advice and support.

Although we represent the health and social care system across Derbyshire, we are committed to working with employers from all sectors to help tackle the barriers that often face individuals when trying to secure employment. We invite everyone to attend the festival and to take advantage of this new event in the recruitment calendar.”
