Tesco set to open in former M&S store

Tesco has been confirmed as the first tenant for the former Marks & Spencer building on High Street in Chesterfield.

Following a significant investment programme by property developer ALB Group in 2–8 High Street, the ground floor has been divided into three retail units, with Tesco securing the central space.

The 5,000 sq ft unit will be transformed into a Tesco Express. The handover is expected at the end of January 2026, with the retailer signing a 15-year lease.

Situated opposite the historic 800-year-old Market Place and adjacent to Primark, the building is one of the most recognisable on our town’s main shopping street.

ALB Group is progressing work to rejuvenate the building ahead of Tesco’s fit-out. Alongside the new supermarket, two additional ground-floor units are being created within the same block, both around 5,000 sq ft.   These units are reportedly attracting significant interest from national and regional occupiers, suggesting continued demand for well-located space in our town.

Chesterfield Canal Trust awarded over £15,000 for environmental and volunteer projects

Chesterfield Canal Trust has secured more than £15,000 in community grants to fund environmental improvements and expand volunteer opportunities along the canal.

The Trust received £2,531. from the Co-op’s Local Community Fund, following months of public voting by Co-op members. The grant will help drive forward the Rewatering Renishaw project, which aims to restore a stretch of the canal and create a vibrant waterside space complete with new trees, wildflowers, picnic areas and enhanced habitats for local wildlife.

Kath Auton, Trustee said the team had been “incredibly grateful” for the backing from local shoppers.
“Our volunteer Work Party has already started the Rewatering Renishaw project,” she said. “We’re hoping to be recruiting more volunteers from the local community next year.”

Following on from the Co-op award, the Trust learned in late November that it had also been successful in its bid to the National Lottery Community Fund, receiving £12,880 from the Awards for All (Environment) programme. The funding supports community-led projects that tackle climate and nature challenges, while helping local people enjoy and care for green spaces.

The Trust’s project will focus on expanding its volunteer workforce over the next two years, aiming to recruit ten existing volunteers and twenty new ones. Volunteers will work on habitat management both on the water and along the towpath in Derbyshire, supporting nature recovery and improving areas that are open for everyone to enjoy.

The grant will also fund specialist training, including ecological best practice, environmental surveying, and safe use of equipment such as chainsaws and brush cutters. The Trust plans to train trainers who can then pass on their knowledge to the wider volunteer team.

Although the two-year project officially launches in February 2026, planning is already well underway.

The Trust says both grants will play a vital role in protecting and enhancing one of the area’s most cherished natural assets, while giving more local people the chance to get involved in hands-on conservation.

The bid was written by the Trust’s Funding Officer, Ian Sesnan, and Steve Waller, who is a Trustee.

Steve said: “The Chesterfield Canal Trust is very grateful to the National Lottery Community Fund. Lots of people ask to help with our work, but proper training and getting the right equipment can be very expensive.

This grant will enable us to really expand our operation so that local people will be able to look after their beautiful canal for the benefit of everyone.”

Chesterfield Champions Mitchells merges with SMH Group

Mitchells Chartered Accountants and Business Advisers has merged with SMH Group, one of the region’s leading professional services firms with offices across Yorkshire and Derbyshire.

The Chesterfield office will continue to operate under the name SMH Mitchells. All existing staff will remain in place, and current fee structures will be maintained to ensure continuity for clients. Day-to-day operations and client relationships are expected to remain largely unchanged.

First wave of Accelerator funding boosts Derbyshire businesses

The Derbyshire Accelerator programme is firmly on track to deliver growth and innovation across the county. The first wave of businesses have successfully secured fully funded expert consultancy support.

Firms across Derby and Derbyshire looking to develop, grow and innovate are benefitting from extensive support available through the Derbyshire Accelerator programme. Delivered by East Midlands Chamber on behalf of the local authorities in Derbyshire, the project runs until 31 March 2026 and has received £722,398 from the Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

The one-year extension builds on the initial three-year programme delivered in Amber Valley, Chesterfield, Derby City, Derbyshire Dales, High Peak, North East Derbyshire and South Derbyshire.

During the first phase (Autumn 2023 to March 2025), the programme achieved:
• 61 new businesses created
• 259 jobs created
• 276 jobs safeguarded
• 163 businesses introducing new products, technologies or processes
• Significant numbers entering new markets, increasing R&D activity and boosting export capability

Since April 2025, 900 Derbyshire businesses have joined the extended programme. Many have received tailored one-to-one support from a Chamber Business Adviser or attended action-planning workshops covering digital skills, sales and marketing, leadership and management, and workplace problem-solving.

A total of 141 businesses have already accessed Growth Vouchers worth £2,000 each for specialist consultancy or training to adopt new technology or processes. Businesses have also been signposted to the Export and High Growth Accelerator projects where relevant.

Get Loos in Chesterfield is one of the businesses benefiting from better systems and stronger leadership through the Derbyshire Accelerator support programme.

Fast-growing portable toilet provider Get Loos needed support to manage enquiries, improve processes and access finance. A business review led to co-founder Adam Sinnott joining the High Growth Academy and securing a £5,616 grant for a CRM and automation tools, saving around 15 hours a week. A £2,000 Growth Voucher, leadership training and finance workshops have further strengthened the business and safeguarded jobs.

Adam Sinnott said:
“We knew we needed better systems and stronger leadership structures to match the pace of our growth, but finding the right guidance and tools wasn’t always easy… We’re now more structured, more confident and more in control of our growth than ever before.”

East Midlands Chamber Deputy Chief Executive Diane Beresford said:

“We are now past the halfway point of the Derbyshire Accelerator programme and I’m thrilled that there has been such a high take-up of support. Businesses are often clear on what they want to achieve but working out how to get there can be the real challenge. By advising them on tapping into expert advice and financial support on a wealth of different subjects, the Accelerator project really is offering the most tailored support – whether that be introducing a CRM to better engage with customers, introducing e-commerce to their website and undertaking research into new overseas markets to boost sales, or equipping business owners and emerging leaders with the skills to get the best out of their teams.

“I would urge businesses to consider where they might benefit from specialist training and consultancy as there is still budget for Growth Voucher support in some districts and fully funded workshops have been scheduled until the end of the programme in March.”

North East Derbyshire District Council Assistant Director for Regeneration and Programmes Steve Lee added:

Sheffield Management School offers support to tackle business challenges

Businesses across Chesterfield and North Derbyshire have just weeks left to apply for a unique opportunity to collaborate with students at The University of Sheffield Management School and gain fresh insights into their most pressing challenges. Applications close at the end of December, giving organisations the chance to start the new year with a clear plan for growth and innovation.

Each year, MBA and master’s students work with businesses from all sectors, delivering rigorous research and actionable recommendations. These projects help organisations tackle issues such as operational efficiency, market expansion, and sustainability, while applying the latest management thinking.

Sheffield-based training provider, Kinch Robinson partnered with the Management School on its international marketing activities. A spokesperson from the firm said: “Working with the Management School was very straightforward, and we felt well supported during the process. The student had understood the brief well and delivered a well-researched and well-written report. We will definitely use it as we formulate our strategy for launching in India.”

Ten-year plan launches to boost jobs, skills and wellbeing across East Midlands

A ten year plan has been launched to help thousands more people across the East Midlands access good jobs, boost earnings, and improve health and wellbeing.

The Get East Midlands Working Plan (2025–35) sets out a vision for inclusive growth across Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, focusing on three priorities:

  • Training and employment support: Connecting residents to sustainable jobs through targeted skills and health support.
  • Joined-up delivery: Coordinating action across employment, health and skills partners.
  • Removing barriers: Tackling challenges such as transport, housing and health access.

Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward, launched the plan, meeting participants who have completed work-training with East Midlands Railway. She said:

“This is about real people, not just statistics. It’s about a mum who wants to return to work but needs childcare, a young person looking for their first chance, or someone recovering from illness who wants to feel confident again. These people deserve public services that are in their corner, and this plan shows what that will look like in practice.”

Developed by the Get East Midlands Working Partnership – including East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA), the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), NHS, councils, employers and colleges – the plan builds on EMCCA’s Inclusive Growth strategy to ensure economic progress reaches every community.

Targets for 2035 include:

  • Raising employment to 80% (around 60,000 more people in work)
  • Creating and supporting 100,000 local jobs
  • Tackling barriers such as poor health, low skills and transport challenges
  • Boosting productivity and pay

Mayor Claire added:

“The East Midlands is a region of potential: potential which will only be unlocked if everyone plays their part. This is the bedrock of inclusive growth: that everyone’s contribution to our society and economy is valued and respected.

“The Government has set us a challenging target to achieve, but it is one we are embracing – because most people are better off in work and we will be a region where more people live that reality.”

The plan will evolve over time, with regular reviews to keep it relevant and focused on improving lives across the region.

Banner Jones has won the Best Innovation Award at the LawNet Awards 2025 for transforming the conveyancing process with a fully digital, end-to-end solution. Winning the Best Innovation Award, sponsored by Baskerville Drummond, marks a major milestone for Banner Jones.

The firm uses biometric ID checks, AI-powered search reports and interactive digital quote brochures to improve speed and accuracy.

Mortgage 1st shortlisted twice at MoneyAge Mortgage Awards 2026

Mortgage 1st has been shortlisted in two categories at the MoneyAge Mortgage Awards 2026.

The firm is a finalist for Broker Firm of the Year (11–50 Advisers), recognising its work in supporting homebuyers across the UK. It has also been shortlisted for Overall Broker of the Year, competing alongside some of the largest names in the industry.

Local government leaders submit proposals for future of local services

Leaders from Chesterfield Borough Council, seven other district and borough councils, and Derby City Council have officially submitted their proposals for the future of local government in Derbyshire.

The plan, called ‘One Derbyshire, Two Councils’, aims to reduce the number of local authorities in the county from ten to two. One council would cover the north of Derbyshire, and one would cover the south.

The submission sets out how two unitary councils could deliver services more effectively while staying connected to local communities. Leaders say the new councils would:

  • Provide value-for-money services, especially for adult care, children’s services, SEND, and homelessness.

  • Protect Derbyshire’s historic boundaries, culture, and environment.

  • Meet Government criteria for unitary councils, each serving around 500,000 people.

  • Support the Mayor of the East Midlands and the East Midlands Combined County Authority in growing the regional economy.

The plan includes four proposals, differing mainly on where the boundary between the north and south councils would be drawn.

  • Proposal A (supported by Amber Valley Borough Council) places Amber Valley in the northern council with Chesterfield, High Peak, Derbyshire Dales, North East Derbyshire, and Bolsover. Derby City, South Derbyshire, and Erewash would form the southern council.

  • Proposal B (supported by South Derbyshire District Council) swaps Amber Valley into the southern council.

  • Proposals A1 and B1 refine these options further using parish boundaries within Amber Valley to decide which areas would join which council.

In a joint statement, council leaders said:
“The needs of our communities – now and in the future – are at the heart of our approach. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to modernise council services while protecting Derbyshire’s heritage and environment.”

The statement highlighted ambitions to deliver more efficient services, attract investment in housing, transport, and infrastructure, and create jobs for local residents.

Derbyshire County Council has separately proposed a single unitary council for the whole county, serving 1.1 million people – similar in size to Birmingham City Council. Leaders of the other councils, however, say two councils would better serve local communities.

The proposals are based on extensive research and a public consultation, which received input from more than 7,300 residents, businesses, and organisations. Financial analysis forecasts £167 million in savings over six years, with annual savings of £44 million from year six onwards. Initial setup costs for the new councils would be recovered in around three-and-a-half years.

The Government will review all proposals and carry out further consultation in 2026. If approved, elections for the new councils’ shadow authorities would take place in 2027, with full operation beginning in April 2028.

This is a pivotal moment in shaping the future of Derbyshire’s local government, aiming to deliver stronger services and better outcomes for residents across the county.

The Mayor of the East Midlands has launched what is being described as the region’s biggest listening exercise in decades – a 12-week public conversation aimed at shaping a new 15-year transport vision for Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

A high-level Local Transport Vision document has been published, setting out the Mayor’s ambition to make travelling across the region easier, cleaner and better connected. The plan is intended to support inclusive growth by improving access to jobs, skills, education and essential services.

Residents, businesses and community groups are now being invited to take part in the Mayor’s Big Transport Conversation, which will help inform the development of the full transport plan.

Mayor Claire Ward said:
“For too many people in the East Midlands, life doesn’t work because transport doesn’t work. When buses don’t turn up, roads are full of potholes or trains are too expensive, it affects work, education, healthcare and family life.

“I want public transport to be an easy and affordable choice for everyone. I want communities connected to one another, not just to large cities. And I want our roads and infrastructure to be maintained to a high standard.

“That is how we will make life work for everyone – connecting communities, supporting business, reducing inequality and helping the region grow fairly.”


Six fights for a fairer, better-connected East Midlands

The Mayor’s emerging plan is built around six key priorities – described as “fights” – that reflect what matters most to residents, businesses and the wider region. People are now being invited to share their views on what a modern, fair and affordable transport network should look like in the years ahead.

  • Fighting congestion

Congestion impacts productivity, wellbeing and the environment. The Mayor wants to hear how important it is to tackle traffic and what local solutions could work best.

  • Fighting for young people’s independence

A fair transport system should provide young people with safe, affordable and independent travel, helping them reach education, training and social opportunities.

  • Fighting for connected communities

Schools, hospitals, major employers and town centres should be accessible without relying on infrequent or unreliable links. The Mayor wants to understand the improvements needed.

  • Fighting for reliable public transport

From overcrowded buses to patchy timetables, reliability remains a key challenge. The plan aims to identify and fix gaps in provision so every community has accessible, dependable travel options.

  • Fighting for better roads

Road quality matters to drivers, cyclists and businesses alike. The Mayor is asking how much of the transport budget should go toward road maintenance compared with other priorities.

  • Fighting for safe and clean bus stops

Poorly lit, unmaintained or inaccessible bus stops are a major barrier to public transport use. The Mayor wants to know what residents need to make bus stops welcoming and reliable.


A transport plan focused on people

The Local Transport Plan sets out three long-term goals:

  • Making public transport easier to use and better value for money

  • Providing more travel choices that reduce car dependency and connect every community

  • Upgrading and maintaining highways to ensure they are safe, reliable and resilient

For the first time, the Mayor has powers to plan transport as a single, joined-up network, bringing buses, trams, trains, walking and cycling routes together across the region.

Billions of pounds of investment are expected to follow over the coming years, supporting a transport system designed to boost fairness, economic growth and sustainability.
