Schools programme announced for 2017 Made in Chesterfield

Annual engineering and manufacturing festival aims to educate young people about Chesterfield’s future and past

For the fourth year running, Made in Chesterfield – will be returning this November, bringing hundreds of youngsters from schools throughout North Derbyshire the opportunity to experience, first-hand, 176 years of manufacturing and engineering history.

Around 20 businesses, training providers and visitor attractions within the sector have come together to offer a packed programme of events to nearly 350 year 6 to 13 school children.

Young people with an interest in science, technology, engineering and maths are invited to visit some of the town’s leading organisations within the engineering and manufacturing sector and learn more about the available careers.

Organised by Destination Chesterfield and Derbyshire Education Business Partnership, the month-long festival in November is designed to show young people and their teachers the modern face of manufacturing and engineering and the many careers and job roles on offer within the sector locally.

Sponsored by University of Derby and MSE Hiller, more manufacturing and engineering businesses, training providers and visitor attractions are involved in this year’s Made in Chesterfield than ever before. Modern-day gift maker Urban Flamingo, Paul Mossman Pottery, Brampton Brewery, Penny Hydraulics, Techman Engineering and MSE Hiller are just a handful of businesses that will providing tours, talks and competitions during Made in Chesterfield.

As well as trying their hand at production, youngsters from primary and secondary schools will be taking part in competitions, talks, tours and hands-on workshops during Made in Chesterfield, allowing them to experience for themselves what the face of modern engineering looks like and the many varied job roles now available in the sector.

Dom Stevens, Destination Chesterfield Manager commented: “More businesses than ever are involved in Made in Chesterfield this year. It is through their involvement that we are able to show young people the changing face of manufacturing and engineering and the career opportunities that exist with the sector.

“It is essential that businesses in the area are able to respond to the opportunities that developments like Waterside, Peak Resort and HS2 will present to them over the next 10 years and they can only do this if they have the workforce with the right skills. Made in Chesterfield is playing a key role in sparking young people’s interest with the sector and ultimately helping local business secure contracts in the future.”

The manufacturing and engineering sector is now more diverse than ever, offering roles in everything from electrical and mechanical engineering to art, design and digital. 186,000 engineers are needed each year nationally to meet the demands of infrastructure projects alone.

Secondary schools in the area who would like to know more about careers within the town’s engineering and manufacturing sector, are invited to attend the free events:

Global Brand’s Steve Perez buys back the hotel his late father founded

Chesterfield entrepreneur Steve Perez has bought a hotel and restaurant that was originally set up by his father and where he learnt valuable business lessons working as a waiter and chef, having left the business 40 years ago.

The Red Lion & Peak Edge Hotel was established in the late 60s by Santiago Perez, and for many years it was renowned as one the of region’s finest restaurants, but the family were forced to sell it when he died in 1975. Since then it had several owners and just 6 years ago added the 27-bedroom Peak Edge Hotel and orangery. It is well-known and a popular wedding venue.

Steve went on to use his catering experience to pursue a career in the drinks business. In 1997, he created the alcoholic drink VK and set up Global Brands, and is a previous CBI winner of “UK Entrepreneur of the Year”. The company has evolved from Steve selling his drinks from a van to an international outfit, to now selling their 17 drink brands in 57 countries worldwide.

Now Steve has bought his father’s hotel back in a multi-million-pound deal, his combined businesses rank amongst the region’s largest employers.

The Red Lion & Peak Edge Hotel isn’t Steve’s first venture as a hotelier. In 2011, he built and opened Casa, Chesterfield’s only four-star independent hotel and a regular entry in the Trip Advisor top ten hotels in the UK. Off the back of Casa’s award-winning success, the team has been on the lookout for a new property for some time.

“When I heard the Red Lion was possibly up for sale I knew I had to seize the opportunity.” Steve said, “I have many fond memories there and learnt the foundations of business from my father, which have helped me throughout my career”.

However, Steve says the decision to buy The Red Lion & Peak Edge Hotel wasn’t simply based on sentimental value, he said:

“It is a great personal achievement to buy back the Red Lion, but the decision was made for sound financial and business reasons and it fits perfectly with my ambition to expand my portfolio of quality hotels in Derbyshire.

“There are many synergies with the existing business and it offers lots of opportunities for staff to learn and develop their careers within the group. I’m really proud to support local job creation and career opportunities, while also investing in this great area that has so much to offer tourists and business travellers alike.”

The Red Lion & Peak Edge Hotel has high-quality accommodation and is renowned for having one of the most successful food offerings in the area. Steve has a passion for local produce and plans to supply food to the hotel from his own farm – something he has seen great success with at Casa.

Barclays and BRM Solicitors supported Steve with the purchase of the Red Lion & Peak Edge Hotel.

Search begins for the year’s most enterprising women

A quest to find the most successful and inspirational local businesswomen will launch this month.

The hunt for nominations for the 2018 East Midlands Chamber Enterprising Women Awards begins on 13 October and Chesterfield business women are being encouraged to apply.

It formally starts at a two-course lunch at the Quorn Grange Hotel, Leicester, where the guest speaker will be the inspirational mother-of-two, businesswoman and investor Alex Peace-Gadsby.

Alex runs several businesses, including the clothing company Musto, and is also involved with charity work both locally and nationally.

Based in Nottingham, she was appointed as the Chief Scout Commissioner for England in 2015 after being involved in Scouting for 11 years.

She will share her experiences as a woman in business, a journey that is both interesting and motivating.

The lunch will be hosted by the Co-Chairs of Enterprising Women – Jean Mountain, a Past President at East Midlands Chamber, and Eileen Richards, of ER Recruitment, both members of the Chamber Board of Directors.

Eileen said:-

“The awards are all about finding and recognising women who make a serious contribution to the regional economy, often successfully balancing work, keeping home and motherhood, but not always being acknowledged for what they achieve.

“Alex does all of the above and more, which makes her a perfect choice of speaker for the event that launches this year’s quest.”

There are six awards to be won this year – the 21st year of the competition: Inspirational Woman of the Year, Outstanding Contribution to Business, Enterprising New Businesswoman of the Year, Enterprising Women Team of the Year, Enterprising Woman in the Community and Rising Star.

Entries have to be in by Friday 5 January 2018. Entry is by nomination, but can be self-nominated. The winners will be announced at a glittering, ‘little black dress’ dinner on 2 March – coinciding with International Women’s Day.

Jean said:-

“By highlighting their contribution and telling their stories, hopefully we can inspire other women to pursue their business dream, which is why I would urge as many people as possible to send in nominations for this year’s awards.”

Chamber membership is a requirement for nomination. For more information visit http://bit.ly/2wQylGm.
