Award success continues for Chesterfield Champions

Our Chesterfield Champions are continuing to gain recognition for their contribution to skills, innovation and enterprise, securing honours at regional, national and international levels, and highlighting the strength and diversity across sectors including education, engineering and the creative industries.

Chesterfield College Group celebrates national accountancy award win

Chesterfield College Group has once again secured national recognition for the second consecutive year, winning Medium Provider of the Year at the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) Accounting Awards.

The award highlights the continued success of the college’s accountancy training provision, which has expanded to meet growing demand from employers and learners across our region. Its flexible delivery model and strong links with industry have helped position the college as a leading provider of AAT training.

This latest accolade reflects both the quality of teaching and the college’s ongoing commitment to supporting skills development within the local economy.

Rhys Robinson, Director of Learning for Engineering, Digital and Services to Business, explains:

“To be awarded another national accolade really does drive home the strength and depth of our AAT/Accounting training. We’re quickly becoming THE training provider of choice across the region, and that’s simply down to the quality, dedication and care of our wonderful tutors. I can’t praise them highly enough.

To now be offering AAT/Accounting training both in Chesterfield and in Derby shows the demand for the training in businesses across any industry, and we’re proud to offer solutions that work flexibly enough to any business/individual need. Here’s hoping that, given a few more years of growth, we’ll be in the running for Large Provider of the Year!”

Chesterfield Champions celebrate growth, leadership and milestone success

Our Chesterfield Champions are continuing to showcase local business strength and ambition, with recent highlights including Franklin & Sons’ US expansion, SMH Group’s senior appointment, and Recon Electrical Wholesale celebrating 30 years in business.

Franklin & Sons appoints US master importer to drive growth

Franklin & Sons, part of Global Brands, has announced a new long-term partnership with Endurance Brands LLC, part of The Sheehan Family Companies, as its exclusive master importer for the United States.

The agreement marks a major step in the premium drinks brand’s US expansion plans, building on its presence in the market since 2020. With strong recent growth, the partnership is set to accelerate distribution and strengthen Franklin & Sons’ position in the premium mixer category.

Founded in 1886, the brand continues to build on its heritage, with volumes in the US increasing significantly over the past year and revenues now surpassing seven figures. The new partnership is expected to expand distribution from 13 states to 30 by the end of 2026, with a focus on key regions including the Midwest and West Coast.

As part of its growth strategy, Franklin & Sons is also expanding its US product range, including new flavours and formats designed to support wider distribution and reinforce its premium positioning.

Steve Perez, Founder of Global Brands, commented:

“When Franklin & Sons was founded 140 years ago, it was inspired by one of the founding brothers’ journey to America, where he encountered a very different drinks culture that helped shape the brand’s original spirit. Therefore, when we acquired the business in 2015, it felt only right that part of our long-term focus should be on taking the brand back to the US, where so much of that original inspiration began.”

Keith Beattie, International Sales Director at Global Brands, explained:

“This partnership is all about unlocking scale for Franklin & Sons. Over the past few years, we’ve laid a strong foundation in the US, establishing the brand’s credentials in the premium mixer space and building a loyal customer base.

“Endurance Brands LLC shares our vision, ambition, and belief in the brand. Together, we’re focused on building a national presence, increasing volumes through expanded distribution and visibility and accelerating Franklin & Sons’ journey towards becoming a true challenger brand.”

Employer Forum helps young people with SEND take steps towards future careers

Last month, 12 young people on the Chesterfield Royal Hospital Supported Internship programme welcomed local employers for an inspiring Employer Forum, hosted at Chesterfield Town Hall.

The Supported Internship is delivered through a partnership between Chesterfield Royal Hospital, Derbyshire Adult Community Education Services (DACES), DFN Project SEARCH and Direct Education Business Partnership (DEBP). It supports young people with SEND to gain meaningful, hands-on experience within hospital job roles and build valuable transferable skills. The Employer Forum supported this by strengthening their understanding of local career pathways and helping them move closer to employment.

The Employer Forum featured a series of engaging 10-minute talks from a range of local organisations and Chesterfield Champions, including Chesterfield Royal Hospital, DEBP, Willmott Dixon, Utility Warehouse, and DACES. These sessions allowed interns to learn more about employers in the area and explore a variety of job roles, while also gaining insight into the personal journeys of professionals working across the region and the skills and experience they have developed.

The forum also included interactive speed-networking style carousel sessions, giving interns the chance to practise conversation skills, ask questions, and speak with employers in small groups about their strengths and aspirations, as well as discovering potential job opportunities and pathways into work.

Kelsey Gill, DEBP Lead Job Coach at Chesterfield Royal Hospital, said:

“We are keen to strengthen connections between young people with disabilities and the local business community. The forum helped broaden learners’ understanding of local job markets and develop their confidence to apply for jobs and attend interviews. It also provided a fantastic opportunity for employers to meet potential future employees.”

Local charity secures government backing for veteran support centre

Derbyshire Addictions Advice Service (DAAS) has secured funding to become one of the UK’s first government-backed veteran support centres.

The STAND TO Armed Forces Support project is one of 14 centres chosen through the VALOUR programme, which is investing over £50 million to improve access to services for veterans and their families.

Based in our town centre, the Veteran Community Hub provides a central access point alongside outreach across Derbyshire, supporting health, housing, employment, finance and wellbeing.

John Ydlibi, Chair of Derbyshire Addictions Advice Service, said:

“We are absolutely delighted that our Veteran Community Hub in Chesterfield (Derbyshire) has been selected in the first round of funding for the VALOUR programme supporting our veterans.

Derbyshire Addictions Advice Service has been working with charities, such as the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust, for several years through our STAND TO services, addressing the needs of our veteran community across subjects such as addiction, loneliness, homelessness, mental and physical health and wellbeing. Employing ex-service personnel and volunteers within our projects reduces barriers and fosters a sense of camaraderie.

It’s great to see increased support for UK veterans and a strengthened commitment to our veteran community.”

Minister for Veterans and People Louise Sandher-Jones MP said:

“This government is stepping up the nation’s commitment to its veterans. We are building the first ever system that brings together a headquarters in the heart of government, coheres charities and support services, and connects a network of veteran support centres.

Chesterfield organisations come together to support community initiatives

Our Chesterfield Champions are supporting the community through fundraising and employment initiatives. Ashgate Hospice launched its Wills Month campaign with BRM, while its record-breaking High Peak Trail Walk raised over £75,000.

Meanwhile, Elate Staffing Solutions’ “30 Jobs in 60 Days” campaign aims to help people into work while raising funds for Chesterfield Royal Hospital’s Stroke Unit.

Hospice and legal firm launch Wills Month campaign

Two of our Chesterfield Champions have teamed up together to raise vital funds through a new Wills Month campaign.

Ashgate Hospice has partnered with BRM to offer professional will writing services throughout April 2026 in exchange for a voluntary donation to the charity.

Last year’s campaign raised almost £16,000, with more than £100,000 generated since the partnership began in 2013.

The funds help support Ashgate Hospice’s services for people with life-limiting illnesses and their loved ones, including care in patients’ homes, 24-hour inpatient support, and a range of therapies and spiritual care.

Leading the campaign at BRM’s Chesterfield office are executive directors Rob Woodhead and Paul Berresford. Rob said:

“We are looking forward to launching our annual Wills Month campaign in aid of Ashgate Hospice, having raised over £100,000 for their vital services over the years.

Laura Law, senior individual giving and legacy officer at Ashgate Hospice, said:

“Gifts in wills are incredibly important to the hospice and raise more than £1.2 million each year. Quite simply, they help ensure Ashgate Hospice can continue to provide care and support for those who need us, now and in the future.”

People can register to take part in the campaign until the end of April at: www.brm.law/Ashgate

Record turnout for High Peak Trail Walk fundraiser

A record number of walkers took part in Ashgate Hospice’s High Peak Trail Walk last month, raising more than £75,000 for palliative and end of life care across North Derbyshire.

Around 721 people signed up for the event, sponsored by Darwin Forest Luxury Lodge Holidays, choosing from 3.5, 11 or 17-mile routes. This beat last year’s total of 580, making it the biggest event to date.

Fundraising has already reached £75,000, with more donations still coming in to support people with life-limiting illnesses and their loved ones.

Among those taking part was Helen Bird, who completed the 11-mile route in memory of her friend Dave Smith, who died in June 2025 aged 58. He had been cared for at Ashgate Hospice’s inpatient unit on the day he died.

Helen has raised more than £1,000 so far and was cheered across the finish line by Dave’s wife, Sarah.

James Branson, Events and Community Fundraising Manager at Ashgate Hospice, said:

“To see 721 people come together like this was incredibly special. “We’re so grateful to every single person who signed up, donated, volunteered or cheered walkers on. The money raised will help us continue to be there for the people who need us, now and in the future.”

Registration for next year’s High Peak Trail Walk is now open, with more information available on the Ashgate Hospice website.

Chesterfield business owner launches charity jobs campaign

Chesterfield business owner, Ricky Clayton,  is launching a new initiative to help local people into work while raising funds for the Stroke Unit at Chesterfield Royal Hospital.

Elate Staffing Solutions has announced its “30 Jobs in 60 Days” campaign, which begins on 1 April. The aim is to place 30 local people into permanent roles, donating £100 for every successful placement.

The campaign is expected to raise £3,000 to support stroke care services, benefiting patients and families across the community.

Running from 1 April to 31 May, the campaign invites local businesses to get involved by hiring through the initiative.

Each role filled will not only support someone into long-term employment but also generate a £100 donation to the hospital’s stroke unit. Local employers and jobseekers are encouraged to get involved ahead of the launch.

Liam Pickard, Charity Fundraising and Engagement Lead at Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS FT, said:

“We are incredibly grateful for Ricky’s decision to support our Trust Charity. Knowing that this campaign has been inspired by the care his family received means so much to our teams, who work tirelessly to support patients and their families during some of their most difficult moments.

“Elate Staffing Solutions’ generosity will help us continue providing the highest standard of care across our community, and we cannot thank Ricky enough for turning such a personal experience into a positive impact for others.”

Funding boost for brownfield housing

The Mayor of the East Midlands has secured £57.2 million to deliver over 1,900 homes on brownfield land, including new developments in Mastin Moor, Chesterfield.

The funding will be used over the next four years to support the construction of more than 1,900 homes across Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham, and Nottinghamshire. These homes will be built on previously developed sites which are now derelict or underused, offering an opportunity to deliver much-needed housing while making use of existing infrastructure and community connections.

This latest investment adds to more than £36 million already secured, taking the total brownfield funding for the region to over £93 million.

Building work has already begun on several sites, including Mastin Moor in Chesterfield, which forms a key part of the programme.

Mastin Moor will see the delivery of 18 energy-efficient homes, marking a step forward in efforts to expand affordable housing supply locally. The development will include 13 council homes on Miller Avenue and a further five houses on Edale Road.

In total, the site will provide seven four-bedroom homes and 11 two-bedroom homes. All properties will be allocated to families on Chesterfield Borough Council’s housing register, helping address local demand.

Henry Boot Construction has been appointed to deliver the project, with all homes designed to meet A-rated energy-efficiency standards.

Other developments are also underway at Balderton Rise in Newark and Alder Close in Shirebrook, Derbyshire, contributing to the wider regional housing strategy.

The East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) is continuing to work with local authorities, landowners, developers, and Homes England to unlock further sites. The Brownfield Housing Fund is expected to act as a catalyst for additional investment while supporting long-term economic growth.

The funding forms part of a wider £234 million Government package awarded to seven Mayoral Combined Authorities to unlock up to 8,000 new homes on brownfield land.

The announcement comes alongside plans for potential new towns and the launch of a National Housing Bank, as part of broader efforts to address the housing crisis, support first-time buyers, and create jobs across the construction sector.

Mayor Claire said:

“Through our previous Brownfield Housing Fund allocation, I can see the appetite that partners have to turn ambition into action. I’m looking forward to working with them to unlock sites, attract further investment, and deliver real change for our residents both now and in the future.”

As EMCCA continues to work with local authorities, landowners, developers, and Homes England, the Brownfield Housing Fund will act as a catalyst for further investment. The programme is helping to meet housing demand, regenerate communities, and support long-term and inclusive economic growth across the region.

Housing Secretary Steve Reed, said:

“People want real change – homes they can afford, local infrastructure that works, and good jobs in thriving communities.” This comes alongside the confirmation of seven sites for potential new towns and the launch of a National Housing Bank.

The Government said these measures form part of its “commitment to ease the housing crisis, supporting first-time buyers, and creating thousands of jobs across construction and related industries”.

Chesterfield Champions showcase growth, talent and innovation across sectors

Our Chesterfield Champions continue to demonstrate the ambition and innovation that makes the town a strong place to work, invest and grow. From the launch of a new Japanese-inspired drinks brand by Global Brands, to continued expansion within the legal sector at Dawson Radford Solicitors and BRM, these latest updates highlight the organisations driving growth, creating opportunities and strengthening the local economy.

Global Brands launches new Japanese-inspired ASUKI liqueur into UK market

A new Japanese-inspired liqueur is set to make its mark on the UK drinks market, as Global Brands launches ASUKI.

Created for at-home social occasions, the 17% ABV liqueur has been developed in response to growing demand for Asian-inspired flavours, lower strength drinks and premium serves that can be easily recreated at home.

ASUKI launches with two variants – Yuzu Citrus and Cherry Blossom – both designed for simple spritzes, highballs and martini-style cocktails. The range aims to offer a modern alternative within the increasingly popular aperitivo and low-ABV category.

The launch comes as Asian flavours continue to rise in popularity in the UK, now valued at £14.6m and growing rapidly. At the same time, lower ABV liqueurs are outperforming higher strength spirits, reflecting a shift towards lighter, flavour-led drinks.

ASUKI Yuzu Citrus delivers a sharp, fresh citrus profile, while Cherry Blossom offers a softer, floral flavour. Both have been created for versatility, allowing consumers to make bar-style drinks at home with just a few ingredients.

The product’s design has also been developed with retail in mind. Its frosted glass bottle features subtle Japanese-inspired details, including patterns influenced by traditional gardens and seasonal motifs, aimed at boosting shelf appeal and gifting potential.

Craig Chapman, Head of Brand at Global Brands, said the launch reflects changing consumer habits, with more people seeking new drinking experiences at home and showing interest in Asian culture and flavour trends.

He added that the growth of the spritz occasion and demand for lower strength drinks presents a clear opportunity for a product like ASUKI.

The brand has been developed in collaboration with Clay Creative, with a focus on creating a premium yet accessible look and feel.

Award-winning commercial property lawyer joins Dawson Radford to lead new department

Chesterfield-based Dawson Radford Solicitors has strengthened its leadership team with the appointment of award-winning commercial property specialist Ian Osborn as Head of Property.

Ian joins from Taylor Emmet Solicitors, where he was a partner in the Bakewell office, specialising in commercial property, agricultural and rural land matters. His move marks a return to the Chesterfield legal sector, having previously worked at Banner Jones Solicitors earlier in his career.

The appointment also sees him reunite with managing director Jo Dawson, who founded the firm in 2016. Alongside growing the business, she was recently nominated in the Women and Diversity in Law Awards 2025.

Ian brings a strong track record, having been named Sheffield & District Law Society’s Partner of the Year last year and previously leading a team recognised as Commercial Property Team of the Year in 2023.

At Dawson Radford, he will lead the development of a dedicated commercial property department, working alongside the firm’s established corporate team and advising on transactions where property plays a key role.

He said the role offered the opportunity to build and grow a department within an ambitious firm, adding that its Chesterfield base provides a strong location to support rural and agricultural clients across the region.

Jo Dawson said the appointment marks “an exciting new chapter” for the firm, creating an opportunity to expand its commercial property offering and grow a dedicated team.

Ian has previously advised on a number of high-profile deals, including the commercial lease for the Bottle & Thyme restaurant and bar at Chesterfield’s Elder Way development.

The appointment comes as Dawson Radford continues to grow, with further recruitment planned to support its expanding corporate law team.

Sheffield and Chesterfield legal firm BRM has strengthened its team with the appointment of two new solicitors as part of its continued growth.

Joe and Victoria new solicitors BRM

Joe Creasor joins the corporate and commercial department, while Victoria Aldgate has been appointed to the residential conveyancing team. Their arrivals follow the recent appointment of Rob Johnson as a director in the firm’s contentious probate team.

The recruitment drive reflects BRM’s ongoing expansion across North Derbyshire and South Yorkshire.

Joe, who qualified in September 2024, previously worked at another Sheffield-based firm. He will support clients on a range of business matters, including mergers and acquisitions, commercial contracts and intellectual property.

He said he was attracted to BRM by its ambition and the opportunity to develop within a growing team.

Sarah Rowland, executive director and head of corporate, welcomed the appointment, saying Joe’s experience and approach to client relationships would further strengthen the team.

Victoria joins the residential property department, supporting clients with buying, selling and remortgaging homes. She began her legal career in 2018, qualifying as a solicitor in 2023, and has a particular interest in freehold transactions.

She said BRM’s strong reputation for client care was a key factor in her decision to join.

Stuart Taphouse, director and head of residential property, said her appointment would help the firm continue delivering a hands-on, supportive service for clients during what can often be a stressful process.

The latest hires underline BRM’s commitment to investing in talent as it continues to grow across the region.
