If live music or a show is your thing, why not make the night before Mother’s Day extra special?

On Saturday, the Winding Wheel Theatre will be hosting The Very Best of Frankie Valli starring Peter Andre, a lively musical tribute featuring Peter Andre and a cast of West End performers bringing the classic hits of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons to life.

Expect all the favourite songs like Sherry, Big Girls Don’t Cry, My Eyes Adored You and Can’t Take My Eyes Off You, delivered with energy, great vocals and a full live band, perfect for a fun night out together before Mother’s Day itself.

2. Dining out

Brunch

Ninety-Four offers a standout brunch menu, with French toast specials their twist on Eggs Benedict – served on a signature potato stack. They now open Friday and Saturday evenings too, offering upmarket sharing plates.

Alternatively, head into our town centre to Bottle & Thyme. This cosy spot serves fresh, seasonal dishes with a creative edge or try their signature Turkish Eggs.

For a more relaxed setting, Sorbo Lounge is colourful, family-friendly, and dog-friendly too. Their Sunshine Brunch puts a fresh spin on all-day brunch favourites, making it an easy choice for a laid-back morning.

Drinks

If you’re planning a drink out, explore our diverse pubs and bars. Start on Chatsworth Road and taste an exclusive range of flavours at Brampton Brewery, where golden ales and dark stouts ensure every sip tells a story of passion and tradition.

For a livelier atmosphere, head further down the road to Junction Bar and sample their signature cocktails, such as the ‘Cherry Bakewell’ and ‘Junction Juice’. Enjoy live performances from local artists on Sundays from 5pm.

Afternoon Tea

Share a special meal with your mum at Ringwood Hall Hotel & Spa, where the former Grand Ballroom will be hosting a Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea.

Enjoy a selection of freshly prepared finger sandwiches, followed by freshly baked scones with jam and clotted cream, a chef’s selection of cakes, and freshly brewed tea or coffee. For an extra £5.00, you can add a glass of Prosecco to make the afternoon feel even more memorable.

Sunday Lunch

Treat yourself to a relaxed afternoon at the Red Lion Restaurant, where Mother’s Day Sunday Lunch is served.

Enjoy a delicious three-course menu for £75 per person, with children under 12 at £30. Celebrate Mother’s Day with your loved ones in the scenic surroundings of the Peak District, savouring locally sourced, flavourful food fresh from their own Walton Lodge Farm Estate in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Or visit the Tickled Trout, on the edge of Chesterfield in Barlow, for quality British food, relaxed dining and an exclusive Sunday menu featuring Sunday dayboat fish, roast pork, beef or ‘a bit of both’.

Closer to town, Casa’s Cocina Restaurant is serving a special Mother’s Day lunch.

Delight in exceptional flavours, freshly prepared and beautifully presented, with a three-course menu for just £50 per person and £22.50 for children under 12.

3. Get outdoors

Celebrate Mother’s Day with a breath of fresh air and some quality time together. Take a relaxed stroll through Queen’s Park, an ideal spot for families, couples, or a catch-up with a friend, or explore Holmebrook Valley Park for open green spaces, sweeping views across town and a peaceful moment by the lake.

If you’re feeling more adventurous, venture a little further into the Peak District to discover a new scenic spot – ideal for creating memories.

Chatsworth Farmyard and Adventure Playground offers a fun family day out too, with friendly animals to meet and spaces to explore together.

Or discover Bolsover Castle for a more thoughtful, quieter Mother’s Day outing. The beautifully preserved 17th-century site has richly decorated rooms, painted ceilings and gardens that inspire a sense of history and charm.

4. Take on a challenge

Council reveals exciting programme of events for 2026

Chesterfield Borough Council has announced its programme of events for 2026, bringing a mix of returning favourites and new activities to the town.

The programme aims to encourage more people to visit the town centre and enjoy unique experiences as residents, families and visitors.

Building on the success of events held in 2025, the year ahead will see the return of several popular events alongside a number of new additions to the calendar:

Chesterfield Glow Up, a new event, will take place on Friday, 27 and Saturday, 28 March. Delivered by Chesterfield Borough Council as part of the Animate Chesterfield programme, the event will feature a light show projected onto the Market Hall by international projection artists Illuminos. There will also be funfair rides, free UV face painting, live entertainment and a night market.

The popular 1940s Market returns on Thursday, 28 May and is expected to draw in large crowds once again. The market will also be taking part in the national Love Your Local Market campaign.

The Chesterfield International Market is to be held from 19 to 21 June. The market brings a range of international street food and traders to our town centre.
Saturday, 15 August, will see a new event celebrating the emergency services.
The Christmas Lights Switch On will take place on Sunday, 22 November, marking the start of the festive season in Chesterfield.

The council will host more events in summer 2026, including a new food festival with details to be shared on the website and social media as they are confirmed.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said:

“With the improvements across the town centre set to be completed this year, we’re excited to unveil our events programme and make great use of the new spaces to attract visitors and provide free entertainment.

“Whilst this is just a selection of everything that will be happening this year, we wanted to make sure everyone had the opportunity to start planning for the year ahead. We’ll be announcing more events and activities in the spring.

“Events like these are a great way of attracting new visitors to support town centre businesses and market traders – I hope that you can join us for these fantastic events.”

Experience a twist on tradition this Christmas in Chesterfield

Chesterfield is encouraging the whole family to discover something new this festive season, including a unique range of activities that are taking place for the first time in the heart of the town (including many that are free).

The planned entertainment is once again expected to attract hundreds of visitors to Chesterfield. Highlights this year include an impressive light experience at the Church of All Mary and All Saints (the Crooked Spire), storytelling with Santa, a cosy tipi to share a drink with friends at Chesterfield Market, and Chesterfield Town Hall providing a new temporary location for the Christmas Lights Switch On.

Here are 12 things not to miss this Christmas:

1. Tipi Christmas will see a giant heated tipi in the Market Place from 7 November to 9pm on New Year’s Eve. The cosy tipi will be the perfect place to meet friends and family and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate, mulled wine, or a seasonal treat. Inside you’ll find twinkling fairy lights and a roaring open fire helping everyone get into the Christmas spirit.

2. The Crooked Spire Sanctuary of Light at the Church of All Mary and All Saints (the Crooked Spire) brings wonderful Christmas scenes to life through an immersive light and sound display. The new event takes place from 22 to 29 November.

3. Santa’s Grotto is back in the Market Hall from late November. There will be relaxed sessions in the grotto on 30 November and 7, 14 and 21 December, 11am to 12 noon. A BSL interpreter will also be available at sessions on 30 November between 2 and 3pm and at the Santa Storytime session on 30 November.

4. The Christmas Lights Switch On event takes place on 23 November. There will be entertainment in the town centre from 12noon including the chance to see street entertainment and music accompanied by a Christmas market. A funfair and other entertainment will also be based in the market and town centre. The stage show starts at 4.30pm outside the Town Hall. The stage show is in a new location this year due to the exciting renovation works taking place in the town centre. Following the stage show, people will be able to follow a musical procession – with a brass band playing, back into the town centre, encouraging people to visit Tipi Christmas as well as other local bars and restaurants.

5. Bluey will be returning to meet and greet fans at the Christmas lights switch on event at intervals from 12pm to 3pm, in New Square. The later meet-and-greet slots are expected to be busy, so come early to prevent missing out! This is a free activity, don’t forget your camera too if you want a photo of your favourite Blue Heeler.

6. Winter Window Trail – Following on from the success of last year, Illustrator Sally Anderson is back to create an exciting festive trail on shop windows across the town centre. The Merry Baubles Trail will run from 23 November until 5 January – you can find more details about this year’s trail and how you can take part on the Chesterfield Borough Council website. There will also be a special bauble themed craft workshop taking place during the Christmas Lights Switch On.

7. Santa’s story time. Santa is going to be appearing in the Tipi every Sunday afternoon to read children a festive story from 30 November onwards till Sunday 21 December. This is a free activity and will be operated on a first come, first served basis. A BSL interpreter will be at the Santa story time session on 30 November between 3.30 and 4pm.

8. Street entertainment will be in the Market Place from 29 November to 23 December – every Saturday till 19 December then everyday till 23 December.

9. Jack and the Beanstalk comes to The Winding Wheel Theatre from Friday 5 December to Sunday 4 January 2026. Taking on the mighty role of The Giant is Jamie Christian – known to millions as the duelling Giant from the smash hit BBC Saturday night show. And our line-up of panto contenders are ready to take on the challenge of good over evil!

10. Puffin Billy will be available to ride in Queen’s Park on 13 and 14 December and 20 and 21 December, it is £2.50 per ride. There is a prize of sweet treat for riders, but please keep in mind this activity is weather dependant.

11. Santa Cruise. Join Santa on Chesterfield Canal at Tapton Lock and Hollingwood Hub. Tickets cost £10 and include a present for each child and a mince pie and drink for adults.

12. Festival of Christmas Trees. See uniquely decorated trees at the Crooked Spire from 15 to 30 November.

Throughout the campaign, there will also be competitions and giveaways with some fantastic prizes on offer.

New exhibition celebrates Chesterfield’s railway heritage

Railway Town is a free exhibition that will be hosted at the Winding Wheel Theatre from Tuesday 7 October until Wednesday 29 October and open from Monday to Saturday from 10am to 1pm and from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.

Marking the 200th anniversary of the modern railway the exhibition will explore the history of Chesterfield’s three railway lines, the connection to industries in Brampton and the town’s connection with the father of the railways, George Stephenson.

There will also be a series of talks about the history of the railways, including an illustrated slideshow presentation by Stephen Gay on Saturday 18 October, this explores his favourite railway lines – featuring stories of his adventures with his faithful German Shepherd dog Wrawby, historical information, poetry readings and lots of laughs.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “The development of railways helped industries in Chesterfield to grow. And of course, we have a special connection with George Stephenson with him choosing to spend his final years in our town.

“This exhibition will help you explore this history and understand the incredible impact the railways have had in our town and with this year being an important anniversary of the rail industry there has never been a better time to uncover this history.”

Photographs and maps that are included in this exhibition have been shared by The Intrepids, a railway walking group.

This exhibition is part of Museum on the Move, which aims to ensure that whilst Chesterfield Museum and the Pomegranate Theatre are closed for refurbishment residents and visitors can still connect with our borough’s history and culture.

This is the latest event in Chesterfield to celebrate Railway 200. Barrow Hill Roundhouse near Chesterfield will also host a spectacular three-day gala this October.

From Friday 10 to Sunday 12 October 2025, visitors will experience a once-in-a-generation celebration at the UK’s only surviving operational railway roundhouse. The event will feature iconic locomotives, including the legendary A3 60103 “Flying Scotsman”, which will be on display and hauling trains across the weekend.

Chesterfield Market Place transformation welcomes shoppers

Chesterfield Market traders are celebrating the completion of major regeneration work to revitalise the main square.

The transformation has delivered a vibrant and welcoming space, featuring new feature paving, restored historic cobbles, bespoke market stalls with traditional coverings, upgraded facilities, and stylish street furniture. These improvements create an inviting environment where visitors can shop, relax, and enjoy the heart of Chesterfield.

The redesigned layout offers wider, more open avenues for shoppers to explore, along with a new central flexible space designed to host a variety of events throughout the year.

It is the first major area to be completed as part of Chesterfield Borough Council’s multi-million pound Revitalising the Heart of Chesterfield project.

The first full day of trading in Market Place took place today. (Thursday 18 September.)

Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “This is the start of a new chapter for our town centre, with the historic market at its heart. The improvements we’ve made will ensure we can attract great traders and more customers to Chesterfield for many years to come.

“We have one of the finest and oldest markets in the country and some of the most reasonable stall prices too. This coupled with a range of town centre events and activities will help draw to crowds in.

“There is still more work to be done across the town centre and the next phase of works in New Square will see that area completely transformed to create a flexible events space that can support markets on busy days like during our flea market but can also be used to support community events, festivals and much more.”

Wendy Bailey, who sells Antiques on Chesterfield’s Thursday Flea Market, said: “The new stalls are fantastic, they provide a great space which we can trade from in all weathers, are built to a really high standard and we’ve had lots of great compliments from customers about them. With the upgrades across the square the Market is looking the best it has for many years, and it creates a really welcoming environment for both traders and customers.”

The works have been carried out on behalf of the council by Thomas Bow.

John Allen, Construction Director at Thomas Bow, said: “We are delighted to have completed phase two of this important project for Chesterfield. It has been a privilege to work collaboratively alongside the council and local traders to help create a space that the whole community can be proud of whilst maintaining access to the key area of the town. In addition to our work in the market place we have made a positive impact in the local communities through our social value programme alongside this scheme. We look forward to continuing this successful project into phase three.”

The next major phase of the market squares transformation is now underway, with contractor working on the lower half of New Square behind the Market Hall. All businesses and properties based on New Square will be accessible throughout the works.

This will see New Square transformed into a flexible events space that can support traditional markets on busy trading days but also host community events, festivals and much more.

Work in New Square is set to fully completed in Spring 2026.

Regeneration work is also ongoing in Rykneld Square where a greener space is being created that will provide views of the iconic Crooked Spire.

A future phase of the town centre regeneration project will focus on the transformation of Corporation Street to provide an enhanced welcome to the town centre for visitors and complement the ongoing refurbishment of Stephenson Memorial Hall, home to the Pomegranate Theatre and Chesterfield Museum. This work is expected to be completed in time for the building reopening in 2026.

The project is funded through an almost £20 million from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund. With the funding split between town centre regeneration works and the refurbishment of Stephenson Memorial Hall.

Dinosaurs, street entertainment and festive fun

There are some great things to look forward to for the rest of 2025 as Chesterfield Borough Council unveils their upcoming event programme for Chesterfield.

With new and exciting events planned and an expanded Christmas offering, there are lots of great things for the whole family to enjoy when visiting the town centre.

Over the summer months, Chesterfield Borough Council’s little and often programme will be returning, bringing street entertainers, musicians and performers to roam the town centre and entertain visitors.

On Saturday 27 September, Chesterfield will be taking a trip back to the Jurassic period as dinosaurs take over the market. Including interactive shows in the market square and giant roaming dinosaurs, it’s a fantastic event for the whole family to enjoy.

Christmas this year will include the popular Switch-on event on Sunday 23 November, there will be street entertainment throughout the town centre, but due to the Revitalising the Heart of Chesterfield works in New Square, the stage show will be outside the Town Hall on Rose Hill this year.

Santa’s Grotto will be returning to the Assembly Rooms and there will be street entertainment on weekends, building up to Christmas. The popular Winter Window Trail, which debuted last year, will also be returning.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “We’ve put together a fantastic programme of events that offer something for everyone to enjoy and we hope that this will help encourage more people to visit the town centre and support local businesses.

“There are some new events for this year and the return of some popular events from previous years. We’ll be sharing more details about these fantastic events over the coming months, and I’d encourage everyone to support them.”

Discover the great outdoors in Chesterfield

Destination Chesterfield board member, Ann Fomukong-Boden explores Chesterfield’s outdoor spaces

Earlier this year, a businesswoman shared something about her experience of Chesterfield that stuck with me… and now I want to share it with you.

Catherine had moved up from the south a few years ago and couldn’t believe how easily she’d swapped congestion for countryside, and how the sense of community wrapped around her like a welcome hug.

It reminded me that we don’t just live near to beauty here in Chesterfield — we live amongst it.

As summer rolls in, I’m grabbing every chance to get outside with my family. Here’s a fun fact for you to tell your friends… Chesterfield has more than 400 hectares of open space to explore – that’s around 500 football pitches!

We’ve made a habit of packing up a picnic, chasing dragonflies through Holmebrook Valley Park, and seeing who can spot the first duckling on the water. After all that exploring, we usually settle down at the café for a well-earned bun and a coffee — the kind of simple treat that tastes better with muddy shoes and rosy cheeks.

Queen’s Park, just a stone’s throw from town, bursts into life in the sun. Walkers pass through on their way into town, the familiar crack of a cricket bat occasionally cuts through the tranquillity. Families and friends stretch out on blankets, watching clouds shift. It’s not just green space – it’s breathing space.

One Sunday, I spotted someone paddleboarding along Chesterfield Canal. My two-year old daughter’s eyes lit up. “Look, look, try!” she shouted. I already envision myself in future years trying to keep up with her and falling off!

When I head out for an early walk, birdsong replaces my morning podcast. Nature wakes the town slowly — leaves rustle, and sunlight filters through a canopy of green. These moments don’t just reset my mood; they remind me why we chose to raise a family here.

This summer, we want to enjoy many car-free adventures – swapping wheels for walking boots or bikes. If you’re planning your own summer days out, Chesterfield is full of inspiration. Think paddling in a stream, chasing a Frisbee through open fields, or stumbling across a band playing in the park.

Living in Chesterfield means never needing to escape to find peace. The peace is already here — in the calmness of the canal, the buzz of bees, and the wind rushing through the trees.

Summer in Chesterfield is set to be unforgettable, with a packed programme of festivals, family-friendly events, and heritage experiences that make the town a top destination for seasonal fun.

From the return of the much-loved Chesterfield Children’s Festival in Queen’s Park to stargazing at the Chesterfield Observatory, there’s plenty happening to enjoy the sunshine with family and friends.

Chesterfield Borough Council and Destination Chesterfield have launched the Summer in Chesterfield campaign, celebrating the borough and helping you explore and immerse yourself in experiences with the people you care about.

Through content on social media, websites and e-newsletters, you can find out about a unique range of events, activities and experiences that are happening this summer. Follow the campaign to find out how you can support local businesses whilst also creating great memories.

Fun family days out

Chesterfield is one of the best places to raise a family and this is reflected with an incredible range of festivals, days out and experiences that lets families take the stress out of summer to create fantastic memories.

Chesterfield Children’s Festival is back in Queen’s Park on 26 and 27 July. Organised by Junction Arts you’ll find live music, theatre, storytelling, dance, games, immersive experiences and much more. Let their imagination run wild at this incredible event and relax as a family in a picturesque setting.

Explore the stunning night sky at Chesterfield Observatory to take a journey through the stars and discover the unbridled beauty of the universe.

Get active on the Chesterfield Canal as paddle sports return for the summer (weather permitting), with a chance to try out kayaking, canoeing or paddleboarding on the historic canal. You can even book for longer to explore the canal and take a break with a picnic in a beautiful setting.

Tapton Lock Festival is a fantastic way to carry the summer vibes on with live performances by musicians, poets, dancers, visual artists, and storytellers on 6 and 7 September. With free activities for all ages, it’s a great event to bring the whole family together.

Chesterfield Museum will be hosting a Medieval Times Exhibition from the end of July into August at Mary Swanwick Primary School. The free interactive exhibition will feature handling objects, dressing up, crafts and games. And on 2 August Lord Thomas Stanley Retinue will be attending to host a Medieval encampment with displays and talks, demonstrations and interactive bill drills.

Take a ride on Puffin’ Billy throughout the Summer in Queen’s Park. The beloved miniature train will be running and letting visitors take in the sights on its journey around the lake.

Take a trip to the Winding Wheel Theatre to see some fantastic family friendly shows including Horrible Histories on 12 July and round off the summer with The Nutcracker on 18 September. There will also be a selection of dance shows featuring local performers through June and July.

Get on your bikes and feel the wind in your face, as the Chesterfield Cycle Festival returns from 4 to 13 July. It offers ten days of rides and events showcasing Chesterfield’s cycle network, local clubs, and the joy of getting around by bike. Whether you ride every day or just dust off your wheels once a year, there’s something for you.

Ahead of the school holidays, local blogger Molly in Derbyshire will also be curating a weekend itinerary in Chesterfield, featuring family-friendly activities, places to visit and scenic walks, all tailored for a hassle-free escape.

Hidden heritage

The borough of Chesterfield is full of history and there are lots of events and activities that will help you discover the area’s hidden past.

Starting with Chesterfield’s most famous landmark, the Crooked Spire, you’ll be able to experience a traditional Derbyshire well dressing from 23 to 31 August. There are also tower tours taking place throughout the summer, it’s a great opportunity to discover the history of the iconic landmark and soak in views of the surrounding countryside.

The borough has been an important part of the rail industry and with this year marking the 200^th anniversary of the modern railway, it’s a great opportunity to learn more. Visit Barrow Hill Roundhouse to see one of the largest collections of diesel, electric and steam locomotives. You can visit on select weekends in June, July, August and September to take a ride up the Springwell branch line.

Rail was not the only important transport network in the borough’s past. The Chesterfield Canal opened in 1777 and thanks to the work of the Chesterfield Canal Trust you can take a trip along this historic and scenic waterway. With cruises running most weekends in June, July and August weather permitting, there are lots of opportunities to explore the canal.

With some fantastic pubs to visit why not try one of the Chesterfield Great Historic Pub Tours? Even bigger and better for 2025 there are two tours running this summer. The Brampton Mile will let you learn about the history of each pub, with a peek into the past and the stories of pubs, people and industries long since gone. New for this year is the Great Haunted Pub Tour. Take a hair-raising journey through the history of eight haunted pubs, each packed with its own ghostly tales. Expect stories of murder, fire, and theft, along with the spirits that linger because of them.

Go carless and explore the area with the Peak Sightseer, an open top bus that will take you from Chesterfield into the heart of the Peak District. Discover spectacular views, historic villages and much more along the way.

Experiences with friends

With a fantastic food and drink scene and some great days out, Chesterfield is the perfect spot to meet friends, including your four-legged friends.

The BRM Chesterfield Festival of Cricket is back from 28 June until 6 July. With more games than ever before, including women’s matches, it’s a great chance to soak in the sunshine, enjoy a drink or two and watch first class cricket in the most picturesque ground in the country.

Chesterfield Pride is back on 19 July with a gigantic line-up that is sure to offer something for everyone. It’s a fantastic opportunity to spend time with friends and family whilst dancing the day away. Big names performing live include 911, Big Brovaz, Booty Luv, Diana Vickers, Baga Chipz and Dene Michael of Black Lace.

There are some fantastic events to support charities and spend time together. Get your pink on for the 10^th anniversary of Ashgate Hospice’s fun Sparkle Night Walk on 28 June. The ten-kilometre walk around the town is a fantastic event that raises thousands for the local charity every year. Cancer Research UK is also hosting the Race for Life in Queen’s Park on 20 July. You can go at your own pace during the five-kilometre race, and why not end it with a picnic in the park.

Whether its bottomless brunch at Casa Hotel, a tour of Brampton Brewery or just relaxing in a beer garden in the sunshine, there are some fantastic food and drink spots to discover. Let’s make the most of Chesterfield’s summer

Destination Chesterfield board member, Ann Fomukong-Boden shares her excitement for a packed summer of events in Chesterfield.

Nothing beats spending time in the sunshine with loved ones. As someone with a young family, I cherish summer because it brings more opportunities for quality time together and the warmer weather certainly helps.

This year, we’re asking local people to share their ideas for an ideal weekend in Chesterfield, so I attempted to write down mine here. In the end, that many ideas came to mind that I mapped out a whole summer of weekends for our readers to enjoy.

I recommend kicking off the season at the Rail Ale Festival, where Chesterfield’s rich heritage meets fantastic food & drink, alongside plenty of live entertainment. The festival buzzes with energy—old locomotives as a backdrop, friends catching up, and hundreds of ales, ciders and spirits to sample. Each beer tells a story, though I’d recommend pacing yourself.

For those drawn to colour and celebration, Chesterfield Pride delivers. Visualise a sea of rainbows, people dancing, music pumping, and joy radiating from every corner. A decade on from its first outing, this event still brings an unmatched vibrancy.

A stroll through Hardwick Hall’s gardens proved a wonderfully wholesome day out with my little one recently. This summer, take a picnic and settle in for Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream or the hilarious The Most Perilous Comedie of Elizabeth I. Watching live performances as the sun sets over the stately home? Truly magical.

For cricket lovers, the BRM Festival of Cricket at Queen’s Park stands out. We’ve attended the last two years and have already got tickets for Derbyshire vs. Yorkshire. The crack of the bat, the cheering crowd, and the ball being smashed for six creates a highly entertaining afternoon. I’d advise whispering it, but our record against Yorkshire here in Chesterfield has been pretty good lately!

Queen’s Park also hosts the Chesterfield Children’s Festival – an event I proudly support as a Junction Arts trustee. Each year, the dedicated team crafts an inspiring space filled with hands-on workshops and live performances. Seeing little ones sing, dance, and create memories around the bandstand is such a joyful sight for any parent.

Back into town, and ThinkFest marks its fifth year of encouraging open conversations about mental health. This uplifting event blends live music, community spirit, and valuable support services. Make a day of it—enjoy performances under the big screen, then stop by your favourite café for cake and a drink.

Chesterfield’s oldest pub to reopen this Easter weekend

The couple who have taken ownership of Chesterfield’s oldest pub say they’re ‘beyond delighted’ to be opening its doors once again this weekend.

Ye Royal Oak, based in The Shambles, right in the heart of the town, has undergone a major transformation – with bright décor, a refurbished bar, and even a suit of armour on display.

The pub, which is estimated to date back to the 17th century, has been closed for several years. But thanks to the vision of former teachers Meg Hartman and Patrick Hopkins, customers will be welcomed back to Ye Royal Oak from this Friday (18th April).

Visitors will be treated to more than a dozen keg and cask ales, Devon cider, Highland whisky and more. For those feeling peckish, the pub will be serving Pieminister pies too.

Speaking on the restoration, Meg said: “We wanted to restore the building back to its former glory. After sitting closed for four years, it just felt a bit sad. It’s not just any pub—it’s the town’s pub, so we really wanted to do right by it.”

“We stripped everything back. Underneath all the layers of previous decoration was this beautiful wood. We embraced the history, kept it simple, and let the old beams and Tudor features do the talking.”

“It’s been our lifelong dream to buy a suit of armour— so we finally made that happen.”

Patrick added that the process of renovating the venue was an eye-opening experience: “We started by peeling back layers of wallpaper, layers of history. Some of it was horrendous, some of it was quite cool.”

“For the first three months, we were teaching during the day, then coming here every night. We even used half-term to work on it. It’s been full-on, but we feel it’s been worth it.

“This has been about giving something back. This pub has been part of the town’s history for so long, and now it’s our job to look after it.”

The work done by Meg and Patrick has been commended by Shaun Stevenson, creator of the Chesterfield Great Historic Pub Tour events. Shaun said: “What Meg and Patrick have achieved here is remarkable.

“This little historic pub has had a proper restoration. It’s like it’s had a heart adjustment—a full set of new valves. It’s beating again, right at the centre of the town. It’s something to be commended and supported.”

“You can see the revival happening across Chesterfield. Places like The Bank, The Spread Eagle, and this pub are reopening, there’s a real transformation underway.

“This isn’t just another pub—it’s part of Chesterfield’s living history. Anyone who visits will see that, and I’m certain they’ll come back.”
