Major boost for a joined up visitor economy strategy for the East Midlands

A new regional approach to delivering a thriving visitor economy across the East Midlands is set to be developed.

In a meeting on Monday 4 November, the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) Board agreed funding of up to £60k to support the joint work of the region’s two Local Visitor Economy Partnerships (LVEPs) to develop a Destination Management Plan for the EMCCA region to add value, strengthen collaboration and avoid duplication.

The approach agreed by the Board focuses on three core elements to boost the visitor economy:

  • By promoting our place and products to deliver enhanced profile, greater reach and more visitors.
  • By developing the offer, working with our stakeholders to improve and increase, for example, hotel accommodation and live venue, conference facilities etc
  • By realising the value of the sector, showing the wider benefits to our region over and above the contribution to our economy.

Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward, has begun a series of engagement events in order to hear directly from key organisations across the sector.

This has included a Derby and Derbyshire-focused meeting hosted by the Devonshire Group at Chatsworth House, an Arts Council-led event in Chesterfield, bringing together representatives from across the culture and heritage sectors, and a Nottingham and Nottinghamshire-focused event hosted at the National Civil War Centre in Newark.

These events provided valuable feedback regarding the challenges and opportunities for organisations in the sector.

There are now two Local Visitor Economy Partnerships (LVEPs) that cover the whole of the EMCCA area, Visit Nottinghamshire and Visit Peak District, Derbyshire and Derby and they are both formally accredited by Visit England. They will work with EMCCA to develop a strategic vision for the region, highlighting all the fundamentals of making our destinations thrive, while supporting local businesses.

The tourism/visitor economy makes a significant contribution to our economy, worth around £5.25bn in 2023 and supporting around 52,000 jobs. The aim is to take up numerous opportunities to grow the value of the sector, both in terms of direct economic impact and wider benefits that support EMCCA’s inclusive growth objectives.

At the meeting, Board members emphasised the value of the visitor economy and the opportunity we have to grow this. There are great assets already across our area, and by joining up our efforts we can promote an offer that persuades people to visit for longer, spending more in our region and going home having had a great experience and promoting our region.

The Board also noted the vital contribution that will be made by areas such as transport and skills, for which EMCCA is becoming responsible, and the opportunity we now have to make sure our spending and delivery in those areas helps our visitor economy thrive, through promoting the value of jobs and careers in the sector, working with providers to develop a skilled workforce, and helping improve transport connectivity for visitors and those working in the sector.

Chesterfield Champions to be showcased in the 2025 Peak District, Derbyshire & Derby Tourism Awards

The shortlist for the 2025 Peak District, Derbyshire & Derby Tourism Awards has been revealed, with several Chesterfield Champion organisations featured amongst the finalists.

The annual awards shine a spotlight on excellence and outstanding achievement across the area’s £2.89bn tourism sector.

Champions included in the shortlist include Matlock Farm Park, Peak Edge Hotel and Chatsworth.

Following a record number of entries, finalists have been unveiled in 15 awards categories celebrating the best of the local visitor economy, ranging from hotels, B&Bs and campsites to pubs, visitor attractions and unique experiences.

In addition, public voting has officially opened for the new ‘Festival or Event of the Year’ category which champions quality events and festivals that have taken place in the Peak District and Derbyshire – from country shows and music festivals to unique exhibitions and arts trails.

There are 9 finalists competing to take the title of Festival or Event of the Year 2025, with voting open until 1 December 2024. The finalist with the largest number of votes will secure the crown. Check out the events and festivals in the running and to cast your vote.

Shortlisted businesses in the remaining categories will now go forward to the final round of independent judging, including a series of mystery shopping visits, before the winners are selected ahead of a joint Derbyshire-Nottinghamshire awards ceremony held at the East Midlands Conference Centre in Nottingham on Thursday 20 March 2025.

The region’s two Local Visitor Economy Partnerships (LVEPs) – Visit Peak District, Derbyshire and Derby and Visit Nottinghamshire – are joining forces to deliver the awards ceremony in partnership for the first time, with the support of the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA).

The ceremony will be hosted by Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward, and is set to be a stunning showcase of the value and quality of the region’s combined £5.25bn visitor economy, celebrating the exceptional talent and innovation across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

Following the awards ceremony, Gold winners in each of the core categories will progress onto the national VisitEngland Awards for Excellence in June 2025, which represent the highest accolades in English tourism.

The Edinburgh Woollen Mill to open new Chesterfield store

The Edinburgh Woollen Mill, a renowned British brand with a rich heritage, has announced the opening of its newest store in the heart of Chesterfield.

This expansion brings an array of employment opportunities and an exciting retail destination to Chesterfield town centre and the wider the local community.

Founded in 1946 as the Langholm Dyeing and Finishing Company Limited in the thriving mill town of the Scottish Borders, Edinburgh Woollen Mill has evolved into a household name with a portfolio of 200 stores nationwide.

The brand’s presence extends across High Street, Tourist, and Garden Centre locations, captivating shoppers with its diverse and high-quality offerings.

Hundreds of kids take part in superhero walk for hospice

More than 1,300 children and adults got their capes on for Ashgate Hospice’s Superhero Night Walk in Chesterfield.

The walk, sponsored by Motan Colortronic, saw fundraisers descend on Queen’s Park for the event on Saturday 19 October.

Participants took on one and three-mile routes from 5.30pm to help raise funds towards the hospice’s care for families across North Derbyshire.

Sponsorship for the event is still rolling in, but the charity hopes to raise more than £50,000 to help fund its crucial palliative and end of life care.

Children taking part donned their favourite superhero costumes, with many families walking in memory of loved ones who had received care at the hospice.

Every child who registered for the event received a free superhero cape and a glow in the dark mask to wear as they walked the route with family members.

There was a host of entertainment on display including stilt walkers, big bubble displays, live singers and dancers, and more.

Dozens of volunteers gave up their time to support the hospice’s fundraising team to ensure everyone taking part was safe and had fun throughout.

Charlotte Butterworth, Head of Fundraising at Ashgate Hospice said: “After holding our first ever Superhero Night Walk last year we were thrilled to bring it back for a second year.

“Thank you to all of the little superheroes that raised sponsorship money and took part, they all looked absolutely fantastic in their costumes as they made their way around Queen’s Park.

“Everyone at the hospice is so incredibly grateful to all our volunteers, main sponsors Motan Colortronic and many other local businesses for their generosity and support – without them we couldn’t put on events like this.

“The support helps us raise the £11 million we need each year in order to fund our care for families across North Derbyshire.”

Ashgate Hospice’s Superhero Night Walk will be returning again next year with details set to be announced in the near future.

Shining stars of the East Midlands’ vibrant tourism industry will be celebrated at a prestigious joint awards ceremony hosted by Claire Ward, Mayor of the East Midlands, next spring.

It has been announced that the winners of the Peak District, Derbyshire & Derby Tourism Awards and the Nottinghamshire Tourism Awards will be revealed at a glittering joint awards ceremony held at the East Midlands Conference Centre in Nottingham on 20 March 2025.

The region’s two Local Visitor Economy Partnerships (LVEPs) – Visit Nottinghamshire and Visit Peak District, Derbyshire and Derby – are joining forces to deliver the awards ceremony in partnership for the first time, to celebrate excellence and outstanding achievement across the tourism sector and give local businesses an opportunity to share their success stories, generate valuable publicity and reach new customers.

From B&Bs and visitor attractions to hotels, campsites and unique experiences, the diverse award categories reflect the breadth of the region’s tourism landscape.

The awards are held in partnership with VisitEngland and Gold winners will have the opportunity to progress onto the national VisitEngland Awards for Excellence 2025, which represent the highest accolades in English tourism.

The awards ceremony is supported by the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) to celebrate the success of local tourism businesses whilst highlighting the sector’s vital £5.25BN of economic impact contribution to the East Midlands’ economy.

Work set to begin on regeneration of Staveley market

A multi-million pound regeneration project is set to begin in Staveley in November.

Chesterfield Borough Council’s Staveley 21 project, funded through the Staveley Town Deal, includes the construction of a new landmark building in the town centre, improvements to the market square and rejuvenation of the high street. Together the works will help support local businesses by creating a more attractive, welcoming and safe town centre for everyone to enjoy.

A drop-in session will be held in Staveley market square from 1pm to 3pm on Wednesday 23 October where local residents and business owners can come and find out more about the plans and the programme for construction.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “This project will transform Staveley town centre and encourage more people to visit to support both existing retailers and market traders. The project will help expand the town centre offer, creating new opportunities for events and social spaces we want to boost visitor numbers and provide the space for local businesses to thrive.

“We’ve been speaking with local businesses and hosting drop-in sessions throughout the design process to ensure the plans are right and at this next drop-in session you’ll be able to speak with the contractor who is delivering the project and find out more about the programme.

“We’re trying to minimise the disruption caused in the town centre to ensure that businesses can continue to trade and will be ready to benefit from the improvements once work is complete.

“This is a really exciting project for Staveley and will help ensure that the town can thrive for generations to come.”

Stepnell who have been working to complete the town centre designs have been appointed to lead construction on the Staveley 21 project.

Tom Sewell, regional director at Stepnell, said: “Staveley 21 will be incredibly transformative for the town centre and as a complete construction partner with vast experience enhancing public spaces, we recognise the importance of close collaboration with local authorities, partners and future users to exceed on these expectations.

“Early engagement with the local community is vital to ensuring the landmark building, market and high street can maximise their impact and we have made great progress since our appointment. Social value can be just as transformative to the community as the build itself, and the Staveley Town Deal will encompass this approach as we look to commence works.”

Works in November will begin with the removal of the disused toilet block on the market square.

In its place a new landmark building will be built that will form a new focal point for the town centre. Once completed the building will house Derbyshire County Council’s Staveley Library on the ground floor and the upstairs will provide space for new businesses.

Staveley 21 also includes the transformation of the marketplace to create an enlarged public space to support existing uses such as Staveley Town Council’s regular markets but also as a setting that can be used to host a wide range of new events to encourage more people to visit the town centre.

Proposals include new tiered outdoor seating to support outdoor theatre and performances, and natural play equipment to help make the marketplace more attractive to families.

Designs for the play equipment have been developed in collaboration with pupils from Staveley Junior School, who visited the site with Stepnell and took part in a workshop to discuss what kind of equipment they would like to see installed.

New paving, lighting, street furniture and planting will help create an enhanced atmosphere and visitor experience at any time of day or night whilst new signage will help connect the town centre with Staveley’s other visitor attractions including the Chesterfield Canal and Staveley Hall.

There is also a shop front improvement grant scheme for businesses based in the town centre. Up to 80% of the costs of shop front improvements like new signage, windows, canopies, and much more can be funded through the scheme.

Through the Animate Chesterfield public art project, Coralie Turpin has been appointed to work with the community and develop a new piece of artwork that will celebrate Staveley’s heritage and develop designs that can be incorporated into the new paving.

Coralie said: “I am looking forward to working with the people of Staveley, we’re planning some fun activities reflecting the local canal heritage and nature to generate ideas for the design. I’m excited to create a great piece of public art for the new marketplace that is friendly and interactive.”

Around £5 million of funding has been provided through the Staveley Town Deal, a £25.2 million programme that aims to ensure Staveley is a place to start, stay and grow.

Tricia Gilby, leader of Chesterfield Borough Council and vice chair of the Staveley Town Deal Board, said: “I’m pleased that work will be starting soon on Staveley 21, this is a key project in the Town Deal programme and will make a real impact on the ability of the town centre to attract additional visitors to support local businesses and explore the Staveley area. I look forward to seeing the plans come to life over the next year.”

Immersive light show returns to Bolsover Castle

Bright Winter Nights will return to Bolsover Castle this November, illuminating the town’s iconic landmark and featuring a newly commissioned interactive digital art installation.

The immersive light experience was launched in 2023 by Junction Arts to mark the 30th anniversary of the lantern parade. This year, the event promises to be bigger and better, with three new light installations, co-created with the local community and specialist artists.

Bolsover Castle will once again come to life with live projections, images and sounds, celebrating local people, technology and art.

The centrepiece for this year’s Bright Winter Nights has been commissioned by the Bolsover Place Board and will feature a dazzling, interactive installation. It will be created in collaboration with Derbyshire storytellers Babbling Vagabonds, video projection artists Illuminos and young people in Bolsover.

The numerous light displays will feature a diverse range of voices, including an installation co-created by the LGBTQIA+ community via a national partnership with Dreamy Place, who stage festivals in Brighton and Crawley.

Participants from the PlatformThirty1 project ‘Know Your Neighbourhood’ will also see their work featured in Bright Winter Nights. The project is a creative community project designed to increase opportunities for connection for individuals and reduce loneliness. Through creative workshops in communal spaces, participants have explored a wide range of art forms, including painting, crochet, collage and embroidery.

Kylie North, Project Manager at Junction Arts said: “Bright Winter Nights is back, with more lights, more projections, more community involvement and more chances to engage with the artworks.

We’re excited to be working in partnership with so many great organisations to bring together one amazing event that will mark the start of the festive season. Every piece of content at Bright Winter Nights has been co-created by the community, working with professional artists – representing voices from all parts of Bolsover.”

“The concept of the event is the same as last year, but all the content is new for 2024, with more interactive elements for visitors to explore, immerse themselves in and enjoy. There’ll also be plenty of surprises, we can’t wait for people to come along and experience it.”

It’s incredibly exciting that it is back for 2024, bigger and better than before. It will showcase the very best of what the district has to offer and will both attract visitors to the town and provide an important moment for local residents to come together and celebrate the place where they live and work. Bolsover is a thriving and dynamic place with so much to offer, and Bright Winter Nights celebrates and showcases the town and wider district at its very best.”

Joel Wileman from Bolsover Castle said: “At English Heritage, we’re striving to make new connections with the community through heritage and tell everyone’s story. Bright Winter Nights and Junction Arts’ wider work fits perfectly with this vision.

“Last year’s event was a sell-out, so we’re delighted to extend the ticket allocation to 1,000 for 2024, which promises to be a spectacular event. The Castle was built by William Cavendish for impressive celebrations and Bright Winter Nights will continue this trend in style.”

New sports shop opens at Chesterfield Market Hall

A brand-new shop has opened in Chesterfield’s historic Market Hall, selling sports equipment, clothing and health products.

Fearless Sports started off selling boxing equipment, before expanding into selling all sports goods including trainers, t-shirts, hoodies, sports and health supplements.

The business started off as an online enterprise, but has since moved into the Market Hall to expand its footprint.

Neil Siddall, Co-Founder of Fearless explained how the idea for the business came about: ” I started boxing at the age of 10 with Pat Bogle at his Barrowhill boxing club, I then joined the Army at the age of 17 again getting involved with boxing, sailing, scuba diving, rock climbing and Mai Thai to name a few.

“After 29 years in the Regular Army ( still do it part-time) I found myself working in Kenya and got involved with a local Kenyan boxing team and decided to help them develop. To help the young boxers mentally prepare for fights, I came up with the concept of fighting fearlessly.

“After a while, business partner Kieran and I decided it would be a good name for a sports brand. We talked the idea through and decided to give it a go and make our own boxing equipment and clothing, spread the word about how to be fearless in sports and hopefully keep helping young people to develop in sport.

Speaking about why he chose Chesterfield as the town to launch the business, Neil added: “Both myself and Kieran grew up in Brimington, sons to miners so it fits that the first fearless sports shop should open in Chesterfield.

“The area is growing fast, especially in sports with new gyms opening all the time – and also with the peak district on our doorstep and sports tourism increasing year on year, we’re optimistic about the business and its future in Chesterfield.”

Local author uncovers hidden history of Chesterfield town centre in latest book

An author is inviting people to explore some of Chesterfield town centre’s hidden gems in his latest book.

Peter Gray has penned ‘A Walk Around Chesterfield’s Hidden Town Centre,’ working with local publisher, Bannister Publications to release the title.

The book takes the reader through a self-guided walk around the town centre, lasting around three miles, but staying within a third of a mile from Rykneld Square.

40 maps and sketches created by Peter as part of the book provide a fresh perspective on the town centre.

In addition to popular landmarks like The Shambles and The Crooked Spire, the walk highlights a wide range buildings, sculptures, alleyways, snickets, and architectural delights.

The walk featured as part of the 2024 Chesterfield Area Walking Festival, and participants said they’d uncovered something new, even after living in Chesterfield for years.

Peter explains: “My aim was to let people find the nooks and crannies of the town that they may not have visited before and to tell a little about the town’s history.

“I’ve been in Chesterfield for over thirty years and always found it a great place to live, work and raise a family. I was initially inspired by a similar style book about the city of York (The Snickelways of York) and I thought I could do something similar for Chesterfield.

“I’ve found the history of Chesterfield fascinating and in 2016 I was part of the group which put together Chesterfield 750 – a medieval pageant day to commemorate the 750th anniversary of the Battle of Chesterfield. Everyone who has spoken to me about the walk has said that they’ve found out places of information that they were not aware of before.”

Peter will be back in town on November 9th for a Meet the Author event at Waterstones Chesterfield, giving local history lovers the opportunity to speak about the book and Chesterfield’s historic town centre.

Shop Indie expands to mark 5th anniversary in Chesterfield

A unique independent gift shop has marked five years of trading in Chesterfield town centre by revealing an exciting expansion.

Shop Indie opened its doors on Steeplegate at Vicar Lane Shopping Centre in 2019 to celebrate the work of makers from across the UK.

After creating greetings cards and other gifts themselves for 10 years, owners Lisa & John had met lots of amazingly talented makers both locally and from across the UK.

They made a wide range of gifts including jewellery, prints, enamel pins, chocolate, soaps, candles, fashion accessories, greetings cards and much more.

Since they opened Shop Indie have stocked gifts from over 250 makers across the UK – many of them who create beautiful gifts from their kitchen tables, making each piece by hand to create something truly special. They also have a growing number of local makers from North Derbyshire and Sheffield.

Whilst celebrating 5 years of trading at Vicar Lane, Shop Indie is also in the process of expanding the gift shop upstairs, providing much-needed space for stocking more products created by indie makers. The new space will also provide room for small events, exhibitions and workshops. Lisa and John have also confirmed that they are signing a 5 year renewal on their shop lease, meaning that they will be celebrating many more birthdays to come at Steeplegate.

The pair commented: “Having both grown up in Chesterfield we’re proud to be a part of the wonderful group of independent businesses in the town centre. It is a really supportive group of people which makes running a business here so much easier. The location is lovely too, with Chesterfield being situated right on the doorstep of the Peak District. We have lots of tourists as well as locals who shop with us for products celebrating the local area such as Chesterfield fridge magnets, Peak District postcards and Derbyshire prints.

“We’ve been trading in Chesterfield for 5 years now, and the town centre has such a wide range of independent businesses. Some that have been here for decades, some are newer businesses, but each one bringing something different.

“Over the last 5 years we’ve found that our customers have been very supportive of small independent businesses like ours, but to be able to maintain such a varied selection of businesses it is vital that people in and around Chesterfield use them and support them in any way they can. Whether this is by spending their money with them, or even simply by interacting with their social media and letting others know about them.

UKATA Brews Up Support for Macmillan

UKATA is set to host a Macmillan Coffee Morning on 25 September, 10am – 12noon at Markham Vale Environment Centre. This event is part of the annual campaign from Macmillan Cancer Support, designed to bring people together over a cup of coffee to raise vital funds for cancer research and support services.

The first Coffee Morning happened in 1990. It was a small affair with a simple idea: guests would gather over coffee and donate the cost of their drink to Macmillan.

Now Coffee Mornings come in all shapes and sizes. From small home gatherings to large corporate events; school fundraisers to a gathering with a local community group. They all have one thing in common – they raise vital funds to support the more than 3 million people in the UK living with cancer.

Local businesses, UKATA members and associates are invited to come along to help raise much needed funds and indulge in homemade cakes and biscuits. In previous years the association has raised more than £600 for the charity in similar events.

On organising the event, UKATA’s Marketing Executive Nathan Shaw says: “With the support from the team, we plan to try and exceed our previous fundraising efforts to raise as much as possible for Macmillan Cancer Support, we will even be having a bit of friendly competition between us, with a bake off judged by a special guest”

UKATA, a leading association, is dedicated to enhancing the quality and standards of asbestos training with the aim to shield workers and the public from the hazards of asbestos exposure.

The association collaborates closely with its members to guarantee that they have access to the latest information, training resources, and industry updates. They provide a suite of support services to assist them in accomplishing their training objectives. Their membership encompasses a diverse array of organisations involved in asbestos training, including training providers, asbestos removal contractors, consultants, and equipment suppliers.


Over £1,500 raised at Vicar Lane’s charity day

Vicar Lane has announced that a total of £1,598.07 was raised at their charity event on Saturday 10th August.

The event was organised in aid of Ashgate Hospice and saw visitors enjoying a range of exciting activities at the centre.

All proceeds from the activities which took place on the day have been donated to Ashgate Hospice, who provide free palliative and end of life care as well as bereavement support to people aged 18 and over in North Derbyshire.

Brandon Howard, Centre Administrator said: “We’re delighted that so many of the local community came to Vicar Lane to support Ashgate Hospice. As well as raising much needed funds, we hope this also provided a great day out for families.”

Rachel Brought, Senior Corporate and Communication Fundraiser at Ashgate Hospice said: “A big thanks to Vicar Lane and the local community for supporting Ashgate Hospice at the recent charity event. Without the efforts of our supporters like Vicar Lane we simply wouldn’t be able to continue caring for the patients who need us and their families”.

Over the summer, Vicar Lane has hosted a number of events and there is still time to get involved.

Chesterfield Canal Cruises raise funds for Cardiac Risk in the Young

Chesterfield Canal Trust raised a total of £600 by hosting special Canal Cruises in aid of the Cardiac Risk in the Young charity.

On Monday 26th August, the Chesterfield Canal Trust ran cruises on its Madeline tripboat.

All fares were be donated to CRY – Cardiac Risk in the Young – in memory of Madeline Siddall after whom the boat is named.

On 7th July 2011, Madeline collapsed and died of a cardiac arrest (Young Sudden Cardiac Death, or YSCD). She was just 15 years old. There had been no warning signs, she appeared to be fit and healthy.

12 young people die of YSCD each week. With 80% of these there will be no warning. It is the third highest killer of young people under the age of 35, yet there is no national screening programme to help detect the heart defects that cause it.

Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) is a charity that funds research into YSCD, bereavement support, screening and much more.


Chesterfield Royal Hospital Trust Charity To Benefit From Being the ‘Charity of the Year’ Across Bolsover

Not one but two organisations from Bolsover have committed to supporting Chesterfield Royal Hospital Trust Charity as their ‘Charity of the Year’ for 2024/25.

Bolsover District Council and the Chairman, Tom Munro, together with SNAP Fitness, have made the declaration to support the charity as so many local people are supported by the incredible work of the Trust on a daily basis.

Cllr Munro, said: “We very much appreciate Chesterfield Royal Hospital; it’s a great local asset for people. The care given is exceptional and many of the colleagues who work at the Trust are also members of our community, so it felt right to support the charity. We have numerous activities planned throughout the year to raise awareness and fundraise for them including raffles, my Civic Dinner, my Civic Service and many more.”

The Charity has recently undergone a change to branding to show a clearer connection to the whole hospital trust – and aims to make ‘every day exceptional’. The Charity was responsible for the £2m Health and Wellbeing Hub, which provides free access for colleagues employed by the Trust 24/7.

Josh Dawes, added: “Our Members have often used the hospital and have lived in the area for generations, so we really wanted to show our support. It’s great that the Charity is committed to working with us too – we’re offering free day passes to colleagues and will be fundraising across the year as well as supporting with Health and Wellbeing talks at the Trust. It’s exciting stuff!”

Both organisations will continue to work with the Trust and Charity to raise awareness and fundraise across the year – and they are always on the look out for volunteers, ideas and to have direct engagement from people in the community to support.
