Chesterfield Borough Council announces new cabinet and mayor

Chesterfield Borough Council’s leader, Councillor Tricia Gilby has named her Cabinet following the local elections on 4 May.

Cabinet is responsible for making decisions on all matters except for the council’s regulatory functions and policy and budget setting, which is carried out by Full Council.

Most Cabinet Members have responsibility for a specific area of the council’s work, Cabinet Members with portfolios include:

Councillor Tricia Gilby: Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Economic Growth
Councillor Amanda Serjeant: Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Finance and Asset Management
Councillor Martin Stone: Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Planning, and Environment
Councillor Kate Sarvent: Cabinet Member Town Centres and Visitor Economy
Councillor Jonathan Davies: Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing
Councillor Jean Innes: Cabinet Member for Housing
Councillor Judy Staton: Cabinet Member for Governance
Councillor Gavin Baldouf-Good: Cabinet Member for Customers and Business Transformation

Cabinet will also be attended by Councillor Paul Holmes, the Leader of the Liberal Democrat group, which is the largest minority group on the council.

Councillor Tricia Gilby, Chesterfield Borough Council’s leader said: “I am pleased to welcome some new faces to cabinet following the recent local elections – the new cabinet line-up recognises the skills and abilities of our members.

“Over the next four years, we will continue with our plan to make to make Chesterfield a thriving borough, to improve the quality of life for local people and to build a resilient council.”

Meanwhile, Chesterfield’s latest Mayor is set to be sworn in – with celebrations to take place at the Civic Parade on Saturday, 20 May.

Councillor Mick Brady is set to begin his term of office as Chesterfield’s 382^nd Mayor, taking over the position as the borough’s civic head for the coming year.

Cllr Brady is due to be sworn in at Chesterfield Borough Council’s Annual Council Meeting on Wednesday 17 May.

Cllr Suzie Perkins is due to take up the role of Mayoress, and Councillor Jenny Flood will be Deputy Mayor supported by Heather Miles as the Deputy Mayoress for the coming civic year.

On the following Saturday (20 May) Chesterfield residents are invited to come and celebrate Chesterfield’s new Mayor at the annual Civic Parade which will take place in the town centre.

Councillor Brady said: “Representing the people of the borough in the role of Mayor is a special honour and I am extremely proud to take up office for the coming year. I hope to meet as many residents as possible over the coming year, while raising much-needed funds for two very deserving local charities.”

Councillor Brady replaces Councillor Tony Rogers and his wife Sharon who served as mayor and mayoress for the 2022 to 2023 civic year.

The Civic Parade is an opportunity to celebrate the new Mayor. The parade will leave from the Town Hall on Rose Hill at 10.40am and will head through the town centre to the Church of St Mary and All Saints (Crooked Spire) where there will be a service at 11am. At noon the parade will return to the Town Hall.

There will be several dignitaries from across Derbyshire in attendance at the parade, along with Freemen, Aldermen, and former Mayors of Chesterfield, and organisations such as the Royal British Legion.

Members of the public are welcome to attend the parade and church service, with seats being allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Chesterfield’s latest Mayor set to be sworn in

Councillor Tony Rogers is set to begin his term of office as Chesterfield’s 381^st Mayor, taking over the position as the borough’s civic head for the coming year.

Councillor Rogers will be sworn in at Chesterfield Borough Council’s Annual Council Meeting on Wednesday 11 May.

On the following Saturday (14 May) Chesterfield residents are invited to come and celebrate Chesterfield’s new Mayor at the annual Civic Parade which will take place in the town centre.

Councillor Rogers said: “I am proud to be representing the residents of the borough of Chesterfield and would like to thank them for their continued support. I hope to meet as many residents as possible over the coming year.”

Originally from South-West England, Tony was born in 1938 and after leaving school he worked as an agricultural merchant at South Devon Farmers Limited, where he trained to be a manager and sold farming goods. At the age of 17, Tony was called up to serve in the British Army for two years. Upon return from his national service, he set up his own company, Tony Rogers Agricultural Ltd, selling animal feed, before managing Hotel Kildare, his family’s business in Kingsbridge, Devon for 15 years.

He married his wife Sharon in 1979 and together they moved to Chesterfield in 1990. Tony and Sharon now have eight grandchildren who they love to spend time with, and a rescue dog, Lottie, who came from Bulgaria to become part of the family.

Tony was elected as Liberal Democrat councillor for Moor ward and has served the community through several terms of office for over 11 years. Tony has dedicated a lot of his time to being on the board of trustees and the chairman of Hope Springs recovery centre, which was a day centre for residents recovering from alcohol and drug addiction and the associated mental health issues.

Sharon Rogers will serve as Mayoress for this coming civic year. Sharon was born in Michigan in the USA before moving to Nottingham in the 1950s. She followed a career in nursing, specialising in paediatric nursing and children’s intensive care, eventually becoming a Senior Sister. At the age of 21, Sharon was the youngest doubly qualified sister in the UK.

In retirement she worked as Manager of the Hope Springs Recovery Centre where she also served as a Trustee until it closed in 2019. She is currently an active board member for The Volunteer Centre in Chesterfield.

Councillor Rogers and his wife replace Councillor Glenys Falconer and Councillor Keith Falconer, who served as mayor and consort for an extended term of office due to the pandemic from October 2020 until April 2022.

Councillor Mick Brady will serve as Deputy Mayor, and the Deputy Mayoress will be Councillor Suzie Perkins.

The Mayor carries out civic ceremonial duties and chairs meetings of full council. They are elected on an annual basis by full council.

Residents invited to attend civic parade to celebrate Chesterfield’s 380th mayor

Chesterfield residents are invited to come and celebrate Chesterfield’s 380^th Mayor, Councillor Glenys Falconer, at a Civic Parade on Saturday 4 September.

The parade will set off from the Town Hall at 10.40am and will head through the town to the Church of St Mary and All Saints (Crooked Spire) where there will be a service at 11am, then at noon the parade will return to the Town Hall.

Councillor Falconer – who took up the post in October 2020 – will serve as Mayor of Chesterfield until May 2022, under an extended term due to COVID-19.

Councillor Glenys Falconer said: “I am honoured to continue in the position of Mayor of Chesterfield. I’m delighted that we’ve been able to start attending more events and I’ve had a great time visiting Chesterfield Pride, opening new businesses in the borough and meeting the judges for East Midlands In Bloom.

“I’m looking forward to the civic parade as it is a fantastic opportunity to meet volunteers from local youth groups and I hope lots of people will come and celebrate with us.”

In attendance at the parade will be several dignitaries from across Derbyshire, Freeman and Alderman of Chesterfield, former members of the Armed Forces, Chesterfield Sea Cadets, Air Cadets, Scouts, St John’s Ambulance, and the Royal British Legion Riders.

As a Liberal Democrat Councillor, Councillor Glenys Falconer represents Holmebrook Ward and has served as a Chesterfield Borough Councillor for a total of 13 years having first been elected in 1999. She has been a member of the Appeals and Regulatory Committee as well as the Planning Committee.

Glenys is married to Councillor Keith Falconer who has previously served as Mayor of Chesterfield, it is thought that they are the first married couple to have both served terms as Mayor.
