Chesterfield Champions strengthen teams and expand their services

Chesterfield Champions across Chesterfield and our wider region are making strategic moves to support long-term growth, strengthen expertise and create new opportunities for their teams and clients.

From employee ownership and leadership appointments to mergers that bring together specialist expertise, several organisations are taking important steps to build on their success.

BSP Consulting becomes employee-owned

Civil and Structural Engineering Consultancy BSP Consulting celebrates becoming an Employee Ownership Trust

Civil and structural engineering specialist BSP Consulting has become an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT), transferring ownership of the business to its employees.

The award-winning firm, which employs 50 people across offices in Nottingham, Derby and Leicester, says the move provides a strong foundation for its future while securing its position as an independent business.

The new structure gives employees a collective stake in the company’s success, with shares held by the Trust on behalf of current and future members of staff.

Day-to-day management and strategic direction will remain with the existing Board of Directors and management team, supported by a Board of Trustee Directors made up of members of the staff team.

Carl Hilton, Managing Director at BSP Consulting commented:

“This is an important milestone in the history of BSP Consulting and one that we believe provides an exciting opportunity for everyone within the business.

We have an incredibly talented group of people working at BSP, graduates and apprentices at the beginning of their careers to people who have developed their engineering careers through the business over many years. We have people with enormous technical experience alongside people who bring fresh ideas and different perspectives. This combination is what gives us our strength”

Banner Jones Solicitors strengthens its Care team leadership

Banner Jones Solicitors has appointed Director Jason Burnett to lead its specialist Care department as the firm continues to develop its services across North Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and South Yorkshire.

Jason joined the firm in 2022 and has played an important role in developing its Care services. His appointment will see him lead the department’s next phase of growth, with a focus on service development, training and mentoring opportunities.

A solicitor since 2008, Jason is a member of the Law Society’s Accredited Children Panel and is recognised as a Recommended Lawyer in the UK Legal 500.

The appointment comes as Banner Jones celebrates its 14th consecutive year of recognition in the Legal 500, with its Family Law and Care team retaining its Tier 2 ranking in the 2027 edition.

Simon Wright, Chief Executive at Banner Jones, said:

“Jason has made an outstanding contribution to our Care department since joining the firm, and we’re delighted that he is now taking the lead in shaping its future.

He has been instrumental in developing the team, mentoring junior colleagues, supporting new talent and helping us strengthen our Care services across the region. His expertise, leadership and commitment to achieving the best possible outcomes for children and families make him ideally placed to take the department forward.

With the team recently retaining its Tier 2 ranking in the Legal 500, this is an exciting time for Jason to take the helm, and we’re looking forward to seeing the department continue to grow under his leadership.”

Jason added:

“I’m incredibly proud to be taking over the leadership of our Care department and to have the opportunity to build on the strong foundations we’ve established.

It’s an exciting next chapter for the department, and I’m looking forward to what we can achieve.”

SMH Group expands regional presence through Parkins merge

SMH Group has strengthened its regional presence after accountancy firm Parkins joined the group.

The Wickersley-based firm will now operate as SMH Parkins, continuing to support clients from its existing office with the same experienced team and established relationships.

The merger gives Parkins’ clients access to a wider range of specialist services across SMH Group, including commercial finance, corporate finance, financial services, residential mortgages and wills and probate.

For clients, day-to-day relationships, points of contact and service delivery will remain unchanged.

Jonathon Dickens, CEO of SMH Group, said:

“We are delighted to welcome Parkins into the SMH Group. They have a strong local reputation and share our commitment to providing clear advice and dependable support.”

The merger is part of SMH Group’s continued growth across Yorkshire and Derbyshire, bringing together established local firms while retaining the personal service valued by their clients.

Mayor engages with local businesses on Overnight Visitor Levy

Following the Government’s announcement in September to give Mayors the option to establish a levy on overnight stays within their regions, the Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward, and EMCCA are engaging proactively with visitor economy businesses to seek their input on the proposal.

A decision to implement a levy will require consultation on a draft prospectus and investment plan. The prospectus will set out potential approaches to levy design and implementation, whilst establishing a clear framework for how any future revenues could be invested to support growth across the East Midlands visitor economy.

To inform this work, EMCCA are undertaking a concentrated programme of regional stakeholder engagement, which is running from 30th October until 10th December.

The focus for this engagement is on identifying opportunities, priorities and practical considerations, which will help to inform the development of the draft prospectus and investment plan.

EMCCA will proactively engage with visitor economy businesses, stakeholders, partners and sectors, via a range of in-person and online stakeholder engagement activities and an online survey, which will be shared widely to gather views.

The survey will act as the primary evidence-gathering mechanism, and visitor economy businesses in Chesterfield are encouraged to complete the survey via the online link.

Mayor Claire Ward says:

“I want to grow the visitor economy in the East Midlands, and there is no way of doing that without investing into those things that attract more overnight visitors, staying for longer.

“Getting this right means being led by the sector, and I do not want to wait for the legislation to be passed before doing this work. So, to help us understand the effects and opportunities these new powers could have in our region, EMCCA is running an initial programme of engagement over the coming weeks with key stakeholders from across the East Midlands to gather evidence and insight which will help inform how the levy is introduced, managed and used.”

The survey will close on 10th December. To submit your views, visit the online survey here: https://survey.orlo.app/15b0fb24-a977-4f3a-8673-c9773084c1e2.

Communities celebrates fundraising success and national recognition

Local people, Chesterfield Champions and community groups across Chesterfield and North Derbyshire are making a difference, from raising thousands of pounds for hospice care to tackling loneliness and celebrating inclusive community projects.

Young superheroes raise £52,000 for Ashgate Hospice

Ashgate Hospice’s annual Superhero Night Walk brought 673 children and their families to Queen’s Park, raising £52,000 so far for local hospice care.

Sponsored by Motan Colortronic Ltd, the event saw children take on one- and three-mile routes dressed in superhero costumes, colourful capes and glowing masks. The fundraising total is expected to grow as further donations and sponsorship come in.

Money raised will help Ashgate provide specialist palliative and end-of-life care, alongside support for patients and the people important to them, across North Derbyshire.

For some families, the event was also an opportunity to remember loved ones who had received care or support from the hospice.

Charlotte Butterworth, head of fundraising at Ashgate Hospice, said:

“Thank you to everyone who took part, raised money, volunteered or donated. We’re incredibly grateful for the support, and the fundraising that continues after the event will help us be there for local people when they need us most.”

Ashgate needs to raise around £11 million each year to provide its services, with around a third of its funding coming from the NHS. The Superhero Night Walk will return to Queen’s Park on Saturday, 16th October 2027, with registration details to be announced by the hospice.

BRM Wills Month raises over £9,000 for Blythe House Hospice

Celebrating the success of their recent Wills Month campaign are (from left) Rob Woodhead executive director at BRM, paralegals Grace Blant, Emily Passey, corporate fundraiser at Blythe

Chesterfield solicitors BRM has raised £9,775 for Blythe House Hospice through its latest Wills Month campaign, supporting people affected by cancer and other life-limiting illnesses.

The campaign offered professional will-writing services in exchange for a voluntary donation, with a suggested contribution of £75 per person. This could provide more than two hours of daytime respite care through the charity’s Hospice at Home service.

BRM and Blythe House Hospice have worked together since 2017, with their annual Wills Month campaigns raising almost £86,000 over the course of the partnership.

Rob Woodhead, executive director at BRM, said:

“We’re over the moon to have raised £9,775 for Blythe House Hospice through our Wills Month, taking our fundraising total to almost £86,000 since the start of our partnership nine years ago.”

Shane O’Reilly, CEO at Blythe House Hospice, thanked BRM and its clients for their support, highlighting the importance of local fundraising in helping the hospice provide care free of charge.

Chesterfield café team wins national award for bringing community together

Monkey Park Team

MacIntyre’s Monkey Park Takeover Team has won a national award for its work creating friendship, connection and inclusion through weekly “Soup and Chat” sessions at Monkey Park café in Brampton.

The team was recognised at Dimensions’ Leaders’ Awards, held in Bristol on 20th October 2026. The awards celebrate the achievements of people with learning disabilities and autistic people who are making a positive difference in society.

Every Tuesday, the team takes over the café, planning menus, preparing meals and welcoming local people into a supportive space. Using surplus vegetables and bread donated by local organisations, the group provides low-cost lunches while helping to reduce food waste and support people affected by loneliness and the rising cost of living.

The project has also built partnerships with local organisations including Chesterfield Asian Association, Children’s Week, Macmillan, Gussie’s Food Bank and Chesterfield Cricket Club.

Olivia, a member of the Monkey Park team, said:

“I enjoy serving the customers, Monkey Park helped me to get at job at Nandos. Sometimes I bake and do cooking. I check if anyone has any allergies and make sure that they are ok. At the end of the day I help with the cleaning. It’s all about working as a team.”

Funding available to support more ‘warm and welcoming spaces’ across Chesterfield

Community groups across Chesterfield are being invited to apply for funding to support new or existing ‘warm and welcoming spaces’ that will help residents this winter.

Grants of up to £750 are available to support local charities, voluntary organisations, community groups or community venues to set up new warm hubs or contribute towards the costs of existing spaces.

The Warm and Welcoming Spaces are designed to provide support for local people through the winter months – offering a welcoming place to socialise whilst enjoying a hot drink and joining in with activities.

A number of community spaces are already up and running in the borough, delivered by a range of partners and organisations – and the Chesterfield Health and Wellbeing Partnership, which receives its funding from Public Health at Derbyshire County Council, has once again agreed to provide further financial support ahead of this winter.

The additional funding will be used to set up new locations across Chesterfield and allow existing spaces to continue operating.

Councillor Judy Staton, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for governance, said:

“We’re lucky to have a strong and supportive community network in Chesterfield that will once again be working together this winter to ensure all our communities are supported.

“Thanks to funding from the Chesterfield Health and Wellbeing Partnership, we are once again able to reach out to local charities, community groups and community venues and invite them to apply for funding that will either help with the cost of existing groups, or to set up a new space in the borough.

“These spaces are so valuable in our communities as they also create new ways for people to connect with one another, and access support and advice.”

Grants are available to eligible voluntary and community sector (VCS) organisations and community-led groups in Chesterfield borough, for the creation or improvement of warm and welcoming spaces for local communities. Grants could be spent on a variety of project costs including:

  • Additional energy costs
  • Furniture and improvement to facilities
  • Additional staffing costs to cover extended hours
  • Additional cleaning costs to ensure compliance with health protection guidance
  • Activities and refreshments
  • Additional activity costs

The deadline for applications is Friday 30th, October, 2026.

The grant is being co-ordinated locally by Chesterfield Borough Council.

Derbyshire County Council’s Warm and Welcoming Spaces Grant, administered by Derbyshire Voluntary Action, is also running alongside this programme. Organisations are welcome to apply to both funding programmes where appropriate. The teams will work together to coordinate applications and ensure there is no duplication of funding for the same activities or costs.

For more information on eligibility criteria or to request an application form please contact Wendy Blunt at Chesterfield Borough Council on wendy.blunt@chesterfield.gov.uk or call 01246 959657, or Helen Marples at Derbyshire County Council on helen.marples@derbyshire.gov.uk.

Chesterfield Champions celebrate national award success

Our Chesterfield Champions are celebrating national recognition for their work in sustainability, innovation, and economic growth, highlighting achievements that are making a difference across our region and beyond.

The University of Derby recognised for driving economic growth

The University of Derby has received the highest rating in two categories of a national assessment recognising universities’ contributions to economic growth and regeneration.

Published by Research England, the Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF6) awarded the University its highest rating for Local Growth & Regeneration and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) & Graduate Start-ups.

The results recognise the University’s work with businesses, support for graduate entrepreneurs and partnerships on projects designed to strengthen the economy across Derby and the wider East Midlands.

As the only university in Chesterfield, Derby and Derbyshire, the University plays an important role in supporting regional priorities and long-term economic growth.

Professor Chris Bussell, Provost (Industry and Enterprise) at the University of Derby, said:

“Our strong performance in KEF6 reflects our commitment to making a tangible difference to the economy and communities we serve.

“From supporting businesses to innovate to developing entrepreneurial talent and working with partners on major regional projects, our aim at Derby is to ensure our expertise, research and education translate into meaningful impact.”

The recognition highlights the University’s continued contribution to business collaboration, skills development and economic growth across our region.

Double Gold for Chesterfield Royal Hospital and DSFS at national waste management awards

Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Derbyshire Support and Facilities Services (DSFS) have won two Gold awards for projects reducing waste and improving the use of NHS resources.

Recognition came at the Awards for Excellence in Waste Management for the NHS in England 2026, where the teams secured Gold in both categories they entered: Best Reduction of Single Use Items and Best Reuse Initiative of the Year.

One award celebrated work to reduce unnecessary items in cannula packs while maintaining patient safety. Following a review of how each component was used, the Trust worked with clinical teams, infection prevention, procurement and education colleagues to introduce a more efficient approach, supplying items individually where appropriate.

This change has delivered £145,683 in recurring savings and an estimated reduction of 102.6 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions.

The second Gold award recognised the Trust’s Linen Return Project, which encourages patients to return hospital-issued pyjamas and linen rather than allowing the items to be lost from the NHS laundering cycle. During an initial 12-week period, 233 items were returned, resulting in an estimated reduction of almost 3.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions.

Sally Ludditt, Senior Health, Safety & Environmental Advisor for DSFS, said:

“Winning Gold for both projects is a fantastic achievement and recognition of the work colleagues have put into finding practical ways to reduce waste across the Trust. What makes these projects particularly rewarding is that they show sustainability doesn’t always have to mean making huge changes.

“To see both projects recognised nationally is something everyone involved should be really proud of, and hopefully it will encourage even more colleagues to bring forward their own ideas for reducing waste and improving sustainability.”

The awards recognise the teams’ efforts to make practical improvements that reduce waste, cut emissions and deliver financial savings while maintaining safe, high-quality patient care.

Banner Jones wins Best Innovation Award at the 2025 LawNet Awards

Banner Jones Solicitor

Banner Jones has won the Best Innovation Award at the LawNet Awards 2025, recognising its work to transform conveyancing through a digital service designed to make property transactions faster and more efficient.

The law firm developed an end-to-end digital process that allows clients to complete their part of a conveyancing transaction remotely, without needing to post or deliver paper documents in person. The approach combines biometric identity checks, AI-powered search reports and interactive digital quote brochures.

Handling more than 3,500 conveyancing matters each year, the firm identified opportunities to improve the traditional process and has spent the past five years working with technology providers to develop practical and compliant digital tools.

Today, 90 per cent of clients use digital onboarding, while file opening times have been reduced from days to minutes. AI-powered search reports save hours on every case, and independent data shows some offices completing transactions up to 25 days faster than rivals.

Richard Joy, Head of Residential Property at Banner Jones, said:

“This recognition reflects years of investment, collaboration, and the hard work of our team. Our digital transformation has simplified a complex process for thousands of clients, and we’re incredibly proud to see those efforts acknowledged on a national stage.”

The award recognises Banner Jones’ investment in technology and its team’s work to improve the conveyancing experience for clients.

Chesterfield Champions celebrate growth, recognition and new leadership

Three Chesterfield Champions are celebrating new developments, with BRM welcoming two trainee solicitors, Banner Jones Solicitors securing 14 consecutive years of Legal 500 recognition and Chesterfield Royal Hospital appointing a new Chief Medical Officer.

BRM invests in next generation of legal talent

(from left) Alec Smith and Emily Froggatt start training contracts this month with leading Sheffield and Chesterfield legal firm BRM.

Two future solicitors have started training contracts with legal firm BRM after securing places on the firm’s competitive BRM Futures programme.

Alec Smith and Emily Froggatt have progressed from their roles as paralegals and will spend the next two years completing training across up to four areas of law, while studying towards their Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE).

Following a competitive application and interview process, the pair were successfully selected for the BRM Futures programme and have now been promoted from their paralegal roles.

They will undertake two years of training across up to four areas of law, gaining experience in both business and personal legal services.

Alec joined BRM after graduating from Sheffield Hallam University with an LLB in 2025, while Emily graduated from Newcastle University with a law degree in 2024 and has worked as a paralegal in BRM’s real estate team since 2025.

Alec said:

“Being a solicitor is the only profession I was ever actually interested in pursuing. No one in my family are lawyers. Being on placement and going to events allowed me to meet lawyers and ask questions I couldn’t ask of family members.

I’m nervous and excited. It’s a new challenge but also a whole new field to learn. I’m happy to be supported by such phenomenal lawyers who are so well respected in the local legal community. I’ll be learning from the best.”

Emily said:

“Studying for the SQE exams while working full time has been a massive challenge, but it is incredibly rewarding. It has definitely meant making sacrifices and maintaining a structured study routine, but knowing I will achieve my career goal of becoming a solicitor makes it all worth it.

I feel excited to start my new role. I’ve enjoyed real estate but looking forward to my first seat in dispute resolution and moving to different seats within the firm, as well as joining different teams and getting to know different colleagues better.”

The training programme will give both future solicitors experience across different areas of law, with Alec starting his first seat in commercial property and Emily beginning in dispute resolution.

BRM Futures is designed to nurture the next generation of legal talent across Sheffield and Chesterfield, providing pathways into qualification through training contracts, CILEx and paralegal roles.

The programme also provides opportunities for junior lawyers to develop their skills while supporting the continued growth of the firm.

Chesterfield Investment Summit to Spotlight £2bn Regeneration and East Midlands Investment Zone

Business owners and investors are invited to discover how Chesterfield’s regeneration projects are creating significant investment opportunities and driving growth across the region.

The Chesterfield Investment Summit will take place on Wednesday, 18th November 2026 at Chesterfield College.

Organised by Destination Chesterfield, the summit will showcase wider growth and investment opportunities in the area, whilst celebrating the success of recent local regeneration projects.

The event, which will be opened by Councillor Tricia Gilby, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council and Vice Chair of Destination Chesterfield, will bring together investors, developers and civic leaders to highlight investment and growth opportunities arising from the developments and regeneration projects that are shaping the town’s future.

Councillor Tricia Gilby, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council and Vice Chair of Destination Chesterfield, said:

“The Investment Summit is our opportunity to let everyone know about the fantastic things happening in our borough, from major regeneration projects that are transforming our town through to our investment in skills and business support that help ensure our community continues to benefit from growth. I look forward to meeting with investors and businesses to hear about the fantastic work they do and explain how they can play a key role in shaping Chesterfield’s future.”

Claire Ward, Mayor of the East Midlands, will address the summit, sharing her vision for growth for the East Midlands, including how increased devolution will benefit local people, business and investors.

The summit will also provide updates on the latest East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) investments and the East Midlands Investment Zone (EMIZ).

Focusing on clean energy and advanced manufacturing, the East Midlands Investment Zone (EMIZ) will provide various incentives to businesses located within its area, such as grants, business rates retention and tax incentives, aimed at driving economic growth and generating thousands of high-quality jobs.

The East Midlands Investment Zone (EMIZ) operates across three brownfield sites at Staveley, Chesterfield. Hartington Commerce Park is paving the way for future-ready industrial and employment space. The Hartington Business Park, which is already under construction, will provide space for new investors and expanding firms. These sites will benefit from a range of incentives to attract end users in the green and advanced manufacturing sectors. The third site is the former Staveley Chemical Works; this site will be brought forward for development in the future.

Claire Ward, Mayor of the East Midlands, said:

“Chesterfield is playing an important role in the East Midlands’ growth story, with major regeneration projects creating new opportunities for businesses and investors.

New classrooms create more places for Chesterfield pupils

Children in Chesterfield now have access to additional school places and modern learning spaces following the completion of a major expansion at Norbriggs Primary School.

Funded through a £2.7 million investment, the project has created four new classrooms for Key Stage 2 pupils, alongside new toilets, a group room and additional staff parking.

Designed as a single-storey building, the new facilities complement the existing school while providing flexible spaces to support teaching and learning and retaining valuable outdoor space for pupils.

Norbriggs Primary School is one of two schools benefiting from a £4.6 million investment by Derbyshire County Council, alongside Eureka Primary School in Swadlincote.

Growing demand for school places has driven both projects, helping ensure children can access high-quality learning environments close to home.

Modern construction methods and enhanced building performance standards have also been incorporated into the Norbriggs expansion, helping to reduce energy use.

Developer contributions secured by Derbyshire County Council have funded the project, with the new building carefully planned around the needs of the school and its pupils.

Alongside significant investment in housing, regeneration and employment opportunities, improvements to educational facilities help ensure Chesterfield remains an attractive place to live, work and raise a family.

Councillor Simon Mabbott, Cabinet Member for SEND and Education, said:

“Every child deserves the best possible start in life, and having access to a great local school is a vital part of that.

“These new classrooms will benefit hundreds of children over the coming years, providing modern, welcoming spaces where pupils can learn, develop confidence and reach their full potential.

“As communities grow, it is important that we plan ahead to ensure school places are available where they are needed.

“These projects demonstrate our commitment to investing in education and creating learning environments that are fit for the future.”

The completed expansion provides Norbriggs Primary School with additional space to support pupils as demand for places grows, while creating a modern environment for children to learn and develop.

Philip Dalton said:

“Winning the Apprentice Ambassador award is a real honour and something I’m incredibly proud of. Apprenticeships have an important role to play in our industry, giving people the opportunity to learn valuable practical skills, gain qualifications and build confidence as they begin their careers.

At Dalton Roofing, we’ve seen first-hand the difference that the right support, guidance and experience can make to someone’s development. To have that commitment recognised with this award means a great deal to me personally and to the whole team at Dalton Roofing.”

The Chesterfield-based business also celebrated recognition for apprentice Devon Bottomley, who was highly commended in the Intermediate Apprentice category. Devon is completing his apprenticeship with Dalton Roofing, with Chesterfield College supporting his training and development.

Devon Bottomley said:

“Being highly commended for this award means so much to me. Starting an apprenticeship was an important step towards developing my skills, building my confidence and creating a positive future for myself and my family, so to have that journey recognised in this way is incredibly special.

I’m very grateful for the encouragement and support I’ve received from everyone at Dalton Roofing. They have helped me recognise what I am capable of and given me the opportunities and experience to keep developing. I’m incredibly proud to have been highly commended and it has made all the hard work feel even more worthwhile.”
