Aldi Brimington celebrates grand opening with Team GB Olympian

Aldi’s newest store in Brimington opened its doors on 30th October. The launch marks an exciting addition to the local retail scene. Team GB rowing star Rowan McKellar joined the celebrations and cut the ribbon to welcome the first customers.

The store is located on Ringwood Road, Brimington, Chesterfield (S43 1DG). It is managed by Rob Hepworth and supported by 33 local colleagues.

To mark the occasion, Rowan McKellar – a bronze medallist at the Paris 2024 Olympics, handed out complimentary bags of fresh fruit and vegetables from Aldi’s popular Super 6 range to the first 30 customers. As part of Aldi’s ongoing partnership with Team GB and its Get Set to Eat Fresh initiative, Rowan will also deliver an inspirational virtual assembly to pupils at Henry Bradley Infant School after the half-term break. The programme aims to teach children aged 5–14 about the benefits of cooking fresh, healthy meals. It has already reached over 2.5 million pupils nationwide.

During the assembly, Rowan will share insights into her Olympic journey, training regime, and the importance of healthy eating and exercise. Pupils will also have the chance to win a £20 Aldi gift voucher by designing a poster showing what healthy eating means to them, with the winner announced during the session.

Speaking about the opening, Store Manager Rob Hepworth said:

East Midlands Investment Zone celebrates first year of growth

Thousands of jobs are set to be created across the East Midlands thanks to a “once-in-a-generation” growth and investment initiative.

The East Midlands Combined County Authority is now celebrating a major milestone this month as the East Midlands Investment Zone (EMIZ) marks its first year of activity.

The 10-year programme aims to unlock millions of pounds in investment, creating new opportunities for businesses and communities, and laying the foundations for thousands of high-quality jobs in the region.

Launched in October 2024 with £160 million of funding from the Government, EMIZ is designed to supercharge growth across the region by focusing on two key strengths: clean energy industries and advanced manufacturing.

Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward said: “The East Midlands Investment Zone provides a once-in-a-generation opportunity for the people in our region – and in just 12 months we are already seeing the results.

“Thanks to £160m of Government funding, we are investing in the skills, innovation, and infrastructure that will create thousands of well-paid jobs and make the East Midlands a magnet for clean energy industries and advanced manufacturing.”

The programme aims to attract at least £383m in private sector investment and generate up to 4,300 skilled jobs – driving inclusive economic growth for communities in the region.

Investing in places, people, and potential

The first year of EMIZ has seen progress across its three designated strategic sites – Infinity Park in Derby, Hartington Staveley near Chesterfield, and Explore Park near Worksop – as well as a number of supporting projects across the wider region.

Key achievements include:

  • Hartington Commerce Park in Chesterfield: outline planning permission has been granted and initial work has started on industrial and warehouse developments on the 20-hectare site.
  • Derbyshire Rail Industry Innovation Vehicle (DRIIVe) in Chesterfield: enabling works to support the region’s growing rail cluster.
  • Research & Innovation Sprint: the University of Nottingham has created innovation roadmaps and supported 15 cutting-edge projects testing innovative products and processes for the green economy and advanced manufacturing.
  • Skills Sprint: the University of Derby has shaped a skills pipeline to connect local people to high-value careers.
  • Nuclear Skills Academy: feasibility work on a second academy at Infinity Park Derby.

Together, these projects are helping to unlock brownfield land, boost local supply chains, and strengthen the region’s position as a leader in green growth and advanced manufacturing.

Mayor Claire continued: “This first year has built strong foundations for the future, and we are determined to go further – attracting more private investment, supporting local businesses to grow, and ensuring every community can share in the benefits of this new era for our region. This is inclusive growth in action.”

Next steps

As the East Midlands Investment Zone moves into its second year, the focus will be on:

  • Building the pipeline of new projects to keep up momentum.
  • Bringing forward investments identified in the EMIZ Strategy and Investment Plan for funding approval.
  • Working with local partners to deliver infrastructure, training programmes, and innovations which unlock further opportunities for residents and employers.

With its ambitious vision, strong local partnerships, and long-term commitment from Government, the East Midlands Investment Zone is set to keep powering growth in the region for the next decade and beyond.

More archaeological discoveries in Rykneld Square

Further archaeological discoveries have been made as part of the regeneration of Rykneld Square, offering a new window into Chesterfield’s past.

Work on the site was paused in July following the discovery of skeletal remains, so that archaeologists from the University of Leicester Archaeological Services (ULAS) could carry out full excavations. Archaeological investigation is required as part of the planning process when burials are uncovered unexpectedly during construction.

During the first phase of work, ULAS uncovered walls and other significant finds that need careful investigation. As a result, the archaeological phase is taking longer than expected. Therefore, the completion of regeneration work in Rykneld Square will be delayed.

It is anticipated that archaeologists will be on site until at least December 2025. Full regeneration work will resume in 2026. A temporary surface will be placed on the site to allow the Remembrance Day parade to go ahead and support Christmas events planned around the church.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said:

“We’re excited to uncover more of our town’s history, and it’s important we follow the correct process to investigate this discovery.
The archaeologists are doing difficult work, and I’d ask that everyone gives them space to work without disruption. More details about the finds made will be shared. Ensuring they are properly recorded at Chesterfield Museum.”

John Thomas, deputy director of ULAS, said:

“We are really pleased to be helping Chesterfield Borough Council with this excavation, which is uncovering important fragments of the town’s rich heritage. We’re also very excited to be working so close to such an iconic landmark as the Crooked Spire. So far, we have found stone walls from buildings close to the church dating back to at least the 17th century, as well as part of the former churchyard that was replanned in the 1950s. Work is still in the early stages, but ULAS will be presenting on the excavations at Derbyshire Archaeology Day in Chesterfield this January.”

The planned works in Rykneld Square aim to create a more welcoming public space. Visitors can enjoy views of the Crooked Spire.

These include brand new:

• Paving and surfaces to give the area a more modern feel
• Seating for visitors to use
• Planting helping enhance biodiversity
• A bin store to improve tidiness
• Upgraded pavement alongside the top of the square to create a level surface
• New bollards and a crossing point to make the area safer for pedestrians

The works form part of Chesterfield Borough Council’s “Revitalising the Heart of Chesterfield” project, which aims to regenerate and enhance key public spaces across the town centre.

Community garden project to transform Chesterfield Station

A group of volunteers working with East Midlands Railway (EMR) are creating a bee-friendly garden at Chesterfield Railway Station to celebrate the town’s heritage and its links to the Peak District.

The Chesterfield Station Garden Renovation will feature storytelling elements, woven into the landscape, including sculptures and artwork created by local schools, colleges, and apprentices. These community contributions will reflect Chesterfield’s rich history – such as George Stephenson, the Crooked Spire, Chesterfield’s coat of arms, and even Lord Stanhope’s Chesterfield Sofa.

East Midlands Railway, which manages Chesterfield Station and runs the Station Adopter Scheme, has welcomed the initiative as a model of community collaboration.

Sam Smith, Community Ambassador, at East Midlands Railway said:

“Our Station Adopter Scheme is all about empowering local communities to shape their stations. The Chesterfield Garden project is a brilliant example of how creativity and collaboration can transform public spaces and enhance the passenger experience.”

Rekha Mistry, Head Gardener at Haddon Hall and Presenter on BBC Gardeners’ World recently joined the Chesterfield Station Adopter team and has been instrumental in shaping the vision. She said:

“A garden is much more than an outdoor space. It should tell a story, and Chesterfield has so many to share – from its industrial heritage to its natural beauty. This project is about creating a space that welcomes visitors, supports biodiversity, and connects the community through creativity and history.”

The garden will be located between platforms 2 and 3 and will include:

  • New landscaping with weed control sheeting, wood chippings, and planters
  • Bee-friendly planting to support biodiversity
  • Sculptural and artistic features designed by young people in the community

Work on the garden is expected to begin in November 2025, and completion of the basic landscaping and planting is scheduled for completion by March 2026.

Some initial work has already taken place, including the temporary relocation of plants and some clearing of weeds,  giving a glimpse of what’s to come.  The project element of the garden will be an ongoing programme with input from as many groups of young people as possible and could extend for two years.

The Chesterfield Station Adopter team run by EMR consists of 18 volunteers, supported by an additional team of around six volunteers from local charity Phoenix Futures. The project has already received pledges of support from Chesterfield Champions NT Killingley and Chesterfield College, Chesterfield Rotary and Network Rail.

The project has already secured funding from EMR’s Performance Improvement Fund, and an application has been made to Community Rail Network for a further grant with a total outstanding budget of approximately £5,000. Additional support is being sought to help expand the scope of the garden and involve more young people in its creation.

£25 million investment fund launched to power growth across the East Midlands

The East Midlands Combined County Authority EMCCA has announced the opening of its Autumn 2025 Investment Fund, making up to £25 million available to support projects that will drive growth, create jobs, and improve lives across the region.

The announcement was made at EMCCA’s October Investment Committee meeting. The fund will back strategic, deliverable projects that align with the region’s ambition to build a fairer, greener, and more prosperous East Midlands.

Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward, said: “This is a major milestone for the East Midlands. By launching this £25m fund, we are backing the brilliant ideas that deliver real results for local people.”

Supporting inclusive growth across the region

This funding round follows the EMCCA Board’s approval in September of a new “twin-tracked” investment approach – supporting both short-term deliverable projects and longer-term strategic programmes that can make a lasting difference.

About 75 project proposals were received though the expression of interest call, representing about £160m of investment opportunities – demonstrating strong demand and ambition across the East Midlands.

A shortlist of projects will now be invited to bring forward full businesses to secure investment.

Mayor Claire said: “We want to see bold, practical projects that will shape the future of our places and our people. This is about supporting businesses to grow, improving skills, and investing in the places we’re proud to call home.”

Looking ahead to a new way of investing

Alongside this funding round, EMCCA is evolving its investment approach. Future funding rounds will move towards a thematic, place-based approach. EMCCA will work closely with public and private partners to develop project portfolios that focus on shared priorities rather than traditional open competitions.

Potential focus areas include:

  • Town-centre and place renewal.
  • Strategic employment and innovation sites.
  • Skills and training infrastructure.
  • Culture, heritage, sport, and rural development.

Accelerating progress

This new funding announcement builds on the progress EMCCA is already making in the region. EMCCA is delivering significant capital investment projects to support the East Midlands Growth Plan.

Chesterfield Investment Summit showcases £2bn pipeline and 7,800 job opportunities

The Chesterfield Investment Summit has spotlighted a bold vision for the borough’s future, unveiling a £2 billion regeneration pipeline poised to deliver over 7,800 new jobs, 3,900 homes, and £473 million in annual GVA to the local economy.

Held on 5 November 2025, the Summit brought together investors, developers, and civic leaders to explore the transformative opportunities across Chesterfield and Staveley. Central to the discussions was the East Midlands Growth Plan, presented by East Midlands Mayor Claire Ward, which aims to create 100,000 jobs, deliver 52,000 homes, and boost the regional economy by £4 billion over the next decade.

The Mayor emphasised Chesterfield and Staveley’s strategic role in the plan, through the Canal Corridor, which has been identified as a priority area for regeneration and investment.

Mayor Claire Ward said: “The East Midlands is open for business. Our Inclusive Growth Strategy is about unlocking opportunity across every part of the region, and Chesterfield and Staveley are central to that ambition. The Canal Corridor is a priority area for regeneration, and we’re committed to supporting investment that delivers real benefits for communities.”

The Summit emphasised inclusive growth, with speakers and delegates reinforcing the need for economic development to benefit local people and communities. Our focus is on inclusive growth, ensuring that investment in Chesterfield translates into better jobs, stronger communities, and opportunities for everyone. Delegates learned more about the East Midlands Investment Zone, including incentives available for investors and details of the Staveley Hartington site. The Summit also spotlighted major developments such as Peak Resort and town centre regeneration in both Chesterfield and Staveley. Central Technology announces landmark IT collaboration

Chesterfield-based Central Technology (CT) has announced a five-year IT partnership with Claims Consortium Group (CCG) to boost digital capability and resilience across the business.

The deal will see CT deliver tailored IT solutions, including upgraded infrastructure, cloud migration planning, and integrated security measures such as ransomware detection, web filtering and vulnerability testing. These improvements aim to support CCG’s growth and reinforce its leadership in the insurance claims sector.

As part of the agreement, CCG will adopt CT’s Gold Managed IT Support Package, providing 24/7 access to a dedicated service desk and on-site engineering at its Taunton headquarters. Legacy systems will be maintained while CT manages CCG’s Azure environment, optimising performance, stability and cost.

To meet the expanded workload, CT plans to double the size of its Southwest office. Existing CCG support staff will transfer into CT under TUPE, ensuring continuity and smooth integration into CT’s wider team.

The partnership underlines CCG’s commitment to digital transformation without disrupting operations. With CT’s support, the firm is set to scale IT capability, reduce risk and enhance service delivery across its business.

Peak Edge Hotel bucks UK hospitality trend with strong year of growth

Origin reaches major milestone at £20m Markham Vale scheme

Origin has reached PC on the first phase of its £20million ARK development, providing 107,000sq ft of ESG-compliant industrial and logistics space at Markham Vale.

Origin is a joint venture partnership between HBD, part of Henry Boot, and Feldberg Capital. It owns and develops next-generation, ESG-compliant I&L assets in the mid box market and aims to deliver £1billion of high-quality schemes over the next seven years.

Capital Angling recently secured the first unit at ARK, taking 17,050sq ft at the flagship M1 industrial and logistics destination.

Phase one comprises four units; all BREEAM Excellent with EPC A rating, ensuring occupiers are meeting increasingly stringent ESG expectations while reducing costs.

HBD recently submitted a planning application for the second phase of ARK, which comprises a final 53,000sq ft unit.

Vivienne Clements, Executive Director at HBD, said: “ARK was one of the first Origin schemes on site so it’s great to see phase one complete. Markham Vale is a proven I&L location, providing occupiers with excellent transport links and sustainable infrastructure plus a strong local labour supply. Construction Skills Hub highly commended at East Midlands Property Awards

Chesterfield’s Construction Skills Hub has been highly commended in the Regeneration and Restoration Project of the Year category at Insider Media’s East Midlands Property Awards 2025, recognising its innovative approach to tackling the construction industry’s skills shortage.

Located on a live construction site in Mastin Moor, the Hub provides hands-on training in groundworks, brickwork, and joinery. It is delivered through a partnership between Chesterfield Borough Council, Chesterfield College, the University of Derby, and the Devonshire Group, and is funded by the Staveley Town Deal.

Over the next decade, the Hub aims to support more than 5,000 learners, offering trade-based qualifications and expanding into degree-level apprenticeships in Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, and Civil Engineering.

Future plans also include training in retrofit and green technologies, ensuring learners gain future-ready skills aligned with industry needs.

The Made in Chesterfield festival was officially launched at an event at Chesterfield College on 8 October 2025, celebrating the town’s manufacturing and engineering sector and its impact on young people.

Since 2014, the initiative has supported over 4,000 young people, connecting them with real-world experiences in advanced manufacturing, engineering, and construction. Organised by Destination Chesterfield and Direct Education Business Partnership (DEBP) and sponsored by Chesterfield College, the festival continues to build a strong pipeline of future talent.

New for 2025 was the Innovation Challenge, introduced to mark National Manufacturing Day, where students teamed up with local manufacturers to solve real-world problems.

The event also showcased Chesterfield College’s new Advanced Manufacturing and Life Sciences Centre, and the college launched a new partnership framework to strengthen employer engagement in education.

DEBP introduced the Employer Standards Framework, a tool to help businesses deliver consistent and meaningful experiences for young people. Learn more at Debp.org/portfolio/employer-standards.

£3.3 million investment at Chesterfield Station

A major infrastructure upgrade is taking place to strengthen two platforms at Chesterfield station.

The £3.3 million investment will see 40-metre sections of platforms 1 and 2 reconstructed to provide better structural integrity, improving passenger experience and reducing maintenance costs in the long-term.

Network Rail began site preparation in August, ahead of the main project work starting on Monday 13 October.

The station will remain open to passengers throughout, and the core work will take place over Christmas to minimise passenger disruption as trains do not run in this area on Christmas Day or Boxing Day.

The project will see the existing platform surface removed and new steel cross members installed. Construction of the new platforms will include using glass-reinforced plastic panels, which are easier to install but just as durable as a traditional build.

In addition, the steel superstructure beneath the platform on Crow Lane will be grit-blasted, repaired and repainted before the end of 2025.

Half of the platform areas will be hoarded off for a period from October to February to allow work on top of and beneath the surface during daytime working hours.

The project is expected to be completed before the end of March 2026 and includes new fencing and lighting to improve security and safety at the station.

Philippa Cresswell, EMR customer experience director, said: “We’re pleased to support Network Rail as they deliver these essential upgrades at Chesterfield station. “The temporary closure of Crow Lane will mean journeys to and from the station may take a little longer, so we encourage customers to allow extra time when travelling.

“We’d like to thank everyone for their patience while this important investment takes place, and once complete, the improvements will provide a safer, more modern station environment for everyone travelling through Chesterfield for many years to come.”

Plan for growth across the East Midlands launched

Residents across the East Midlands could see better jobs, more affordable homes, and stronger, fairer communities through a bold new 10-year growth plan.  

The East Midlands Growth Plan 2025-2035 sets out a long-term vision to deliver fast, fair growth for all, ensuring every community and resident across Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire benefits from economic progress. 

The plan will add £13 billion to the regional economy and support 60,000 more people into work over the next decade. It also sets ambitious goals to deliver more than 100,000 new homes, 210,000 new qualifications, and invest more than £2 billion in new transport infrastructure to better connect people to jobs and opportunity. 

At its heart is a commitment to inclusive growth, ensuring that the proceeds of economic success are shared fairly, with investment directed where it will have the greatest impact on people’s lives. 

Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward, said: “For the first time, we have a growth plan that is backed by the region and puts us in pole position to succeed.

“This plan is about unlocking growth while tackling inequality, creating better jobs, fairer pay, and new opportunities in every community. By working with business, government, and local partners, we can build a stronger, more inclusive economy that delivers for everyone.

“The East Midlands has the people, the ideas and the determination to drive Britain’s growth. We must now turn our potential into prosperity, creating the right conditions for business to thrive and local people to succeed.”

The plan identifies key sectors which will power future growth, including clean energy, MedTech and life sciences, advanced manufacturing, digital industries, and the visitor economy. It also outlines major place-based projects such as the Trent Arc and Supercluster, which together could deliver £3.3bn in economic value and create more than 55,000 high-quality jobs. 

EMCCA’s Inclusive Growth Framework, developed from the East Midlands Inclusive Growth Commission’s findings, is a key step in making sure everyone in the region benefits from growth. It sets out a vision for 2040 in which every young person has a fair start, every resident has a route to good work, and every community shares in the region’s success. 

Using practical ideas like better skills, housing, transport, and the Opportunity Escalator pathway to better jobs, the Framework turns this vision into action. The East Midlands Growth Plan puts the Framework into practice by guiding investment, supporting local industries, and creating thriving communities with fair opportunities for all. 

Mayor Claire added: “I want the East Midlands to be one of the UK’s fastest growing and most inclusive regional economies – a place where people are proud to live, work, and build their futures. This plan is the roadmap to get us there.”

The Growth Plan was formally approved by the EMCCA Board before being launched at Derby’s Museum of Making, where business leaders and civic partners were invited to pledge their support to “drive inclusive growth that benefits every person and place across the East Midlands.”

David Williams, chair of EMCCA’s business advisory board, said: “This is an exciting plan with a bold ambition to place the East Midlands at the very forefront of the UK economy, especially in key, growing sectors such as clean energy, medical technology and advanced manufacturing.

“Backed by a stronger local skills base, with more apprenticeships and graduate retention, businesses will be supported to grow, scale and innovate, with upgraded infrastructure to cut costs and boost competitiveness, alongside improved access to finance, investment, and export markets.”

East Midlands Chamber Chief Executive and Destination Chesterfield Board Member, Scott Knowles said:

“Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire and the wider East Midlands play a huge role in driving the UK economy, boasting world-class firms and outstanding talent and innovation. Investment into skills, green energy and business support is essential for all three counties to thrive going forward into the future, so I welcome the plans that have been outlined by Mayor Claire Ward today.  The East Midlands Growth Plan details how the two counties and cities will focus on addressing the age-old challenge of the East Midlands receiving less investment compared to other regions of the UK.

The East Midlands Growth Plan is the first of a new suite of mayoral strategies, including the upcoming Mayor’s Transport Plan and Get East Midlands Working Plan, which together will deliver the Mayor’s vision of inclusive, sustainable growth. 

For residents, this means more chances to access training, better-paid jobs, affordable energy-efficient homes, and improved transport links that make daily life easier. For business, it means a clearer route to invest, scale, and thrive in a region that’s open for growth.
