Chesterfield FC launches new cancer support group

A cancer support group is being launched by Chesterfield FC Community Trust.

The group will bring people together who have been affected by the disease, with the first coffee morning taking place in the HUB at the Technique Stadium today (26th November).

Hosted by former Spireites striker Tony Lormor, who has faced his own battles with cancer, the event is free for anyone to attend.

Tony says there are plans to offer further help and support as the group grows. He said: “We’re going to start by just having a chat so that everybody can get to know each other and eventually we want to develop a cancer recovery programme, offering exercise and wellbeing sessions.

“You can’t describe what it feels like when you have been diagnosed with cancer, so to speak to someone who has gone through that and can share experiences is invaluable.

“It’s not clinical so it’ll be a more relaxed atmosphere than being in a hospital. The football club is the hub of the community, so it is a great place to be based.”

For more information, please email tonylormor@spireitestrust.org.uk.

The Spireites have launched a number of initiatives in the community recently, including a weight management programme, known as ‘Winning Goals.’

Donations of toys have also been flooding in at the Technique Stadium recently for the club’s annual Chester’s Christmas Toy Appeal, which helps to ensure less fortunate children still have gifts to open on the big day.

Spireites submit planning application for new sports bar

A planning application has been submitted by Chesterfield FC for the construction of a sports bar in the car park at the Technique Stadium.

The plan is for Bar 1866 to open on matchdays and from 4.30pm to 12am on other days. Fully accessible, it would be used by Chesterfield FC Community Trust as an educational space during the day.

Featuring an open kitchen and a 10m video screen, with a capacity of around 320, the design shows fully-glazed doors at the front of the building with doors opening to an amphitheatre facing south-west.

Spireites chairman Mike Goodwin said: “We feel that this venue, behind the Motan Colortronic (South) Stand, would be a welcome addition to the current facilities at the stadium.

“A privately-financed initiative has been devised for this project and others and the financial projections for Bar 1866 Sport are very encouraging.

“There will be a public exhibition of the proposals during the consultation period and people are welcome to contact Chesterfield Borough Council to offer their support for the project.”

If planning permission is granted, it is hoped that Bar 1866 will open during the summer. Further details will be announced in due course.

The Spireites have recently launched a number of charity initiatives off the pitch. This week, Chester’s Christmas Toy Appeal was launched, with more than £3,000 worth of toys donated on the first day alone. Read more here.

This Saturday, ahead of Chesterfield’s fixture at home to Weymouth in the National League, the club will be collecting donations for the Pathways charity, asking fans and people across the town to donate any suitable clothing or footwear.

The appeal comes as part of manager James Rowe’s ambassadorial role with the charity, which provides support for homeless people in our area. The Community Hub at the Technique Stadium will be open from 10am on Saturday, 13th November to receive the donations.

Spireites launch Chester’s Toy Appeal 2021

Chester’s Toy Appeal 2021 has been launched by Chesterfield FC, with a huge amount of donations coming in of the first day of the campaign.

Sponsored by CRS Accident Repair, the initiative provides toys at Christmas for children’s charities and families who receive free school meals.

Spireites marketing manager Bridget Ball said: “There was a fantastic response when we introduced Chester’s Toy Appeal last year, with many local businesses and individuals kindly donating toys.

“We are looking to provide even more toys this year for children who would otherwise go without at Christmas.

“Every child should have a present to open on Christmas Day and we are doing all we can to put smiles on faces.”

The donation of unwrapped new toys for children aged 0-18 years is requested, and the appeal has got off to a flying start, with over £3,000 worth of toy donations pledged by the end of the first day.

Bridget added: “I am overwhelmed with the response in such a short space of time.

“It shows just how caring people are in the local community and how the club and the Community Trust can make a real difference.”

The toys should be taken to Chester’s Den play centre at the Technique Stadium, from 10am to 4pm, Monday to Saturday (except on a matchday).

The club has also launched other initiatives recently to support local people and businesses in the area. Find out more at: https://www.chesterfield.co.uk/2021/11/chesterfield-fc-supports-businesses-and-residents-with-latest-initiatives/

Richard Aspinall, sales manager at Derbyshire Distillery said: “We wanted to see how we could help raise money for a local charity and Martin approached us to ask if we could produce a gin in aid of Ashgate Hospicecare.

“We set to work by producing a nice, pink and glittery gin, thanks to the brilliant work of our head distiller, Oliver Meakin. I would also like to thank Paul Truscott, who designed the label for the bottles.

“We think it is a nice way to raise funds for Ashgate Hospicecare, whereby people can have a good time and enjoy a gin and tonic (responsibly of course!)”

Chair of North East Derbyshire District Council, Councillor Martin Thacker MBE, said, “It has been a fantastic experience working with Derbyshire Distillery to produce this incredible special edition gin. Youngsters educated on healthy eating and internet safety by Chesterfield FC Community Trust

Chesterfield FC Community Trust has rolled out a number of initiatives aimed at educating the town’s young people, including the launch of internet safety workshops and a ‘Healthy Me’ nutrition project at Newbold Church School.

The children learned about how hydrated they are through the foods they eat and discussed the importance of eating five daily portions of fruit and vegetables.

During the six sessions, the importance of a healthy diet was stressed and raising awareness of the use of food banks in order to help others was also covered.

Commenting on the project, the Trust’s activities co-ordinator, Alyss Hearnshaw, said: “The Y4 class were outstanding to teach and their contribution to the food bank, supported by other pupils and teachers in the school, was second to none!”

Nicola Finch, from the Derbyshire Community Hub, added: “Thank you so much to all involved.

“We have managed too take two boxes full of food out into the community to support those who are homeless. Fantastic work!”

Meanwhile the Trust is encouraging young people to take part in the recently-launched internet safety workshops, which are free to schools and parents for home schooling purposes.

These workshops focus on the theme of reliability online, opening conversations with young people about how they explore information, looking at the strategies they can implement to spot and speak out against harmful and misleading content online. The workshops can also be delivered in school upon requests.

Robert Stevenson, the Trust’s Premier League co-ordinator, said “The workshops focus on what to trust online, exploring how influence, persuasion and manipulation can impact young people’s decisions, opinions and what they share online.
“We want to give young people the skills to support one another and the strategies to spot and speak out against harmful and misleading content online.”

If your school would like to take part in the ‘Healthy Me’ nutrition social action project or the internet safety workshops, email robertstevenson@spireitestrust.org.uk for more information.
