Chesterfield careers programme celebrates inspiring young people for two years

A pioneering project designed to provide local people with valuable work experience and career insights has reached a significant milestone – supporting more than 730 young people over the last two years.

The Careers Made in Chesterfield (CMiC) programme, which launched in 2023, delivers careers education, advice and guidance, and directly links young people, parents, teachers and carers to local opportunities from Chesterfield’s property and construction, manufacturing and engineering and social care sectors.

CMiC is a key part of Chesterfield Borough Council’s Skills Action Plan which aims to ensure that local people have the right skills to support their career progression and benefit from future employment opportunities.

The CMiC workshop programme is delivered in local schools and the Chesterfield Youth Hub by the Direct Education Business Partnership (DEBP), and over the last two years it has:

  • Hosted nine workshops engaging with 732 individuals across the programme
  • Provided experiences of work for 49 individuals including visits to large council regeneration projects including Stephenson Memorial Hall and the Revitalising the Heart of Chesterfield project which has included town centre regeneration works.
  • Supported 44 professionals across 28 businesses and organisations including Frank Shaw Associates, Rodgers Leask, Met Office, University of Derby, Nottingham Trent University, Chesterfield College, Fortem, and the Environment Agency to name a few.

Paula Symonds, Projects Manager at Direct Education Business Partnership, said: “CMiC is now entering its third year, and we are incredibly proud of how it’s grown. Each year, it expands to include more job sectors, introducing students to a wider range of career options.  One of the best parts of the programme is working closely with local employers.  This provides students with first-hand insights into the skills, qualifications, and pathways required to secure employment directly from local industry professionals.”

Chesterfield College has supported the CMiC programme by delivering the Chesterfield to Eat Well sessions to two local schools – Springwell Community College and Parkside Community School – focussing on the benefits of eating healthily and how to cook low budget meals at home. 74 students have engaged with sessions over the last two years.

Six encounters between local teachers and businesses have resulted from East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) facilitating teacher encounter sessions over the last two years, taking Chesterfield teachers out of the classroom and allowing them to visit different workplaces to see what different careers and opportunities are available for our young people.

Funding from EMCCA Careers Hub has also allowed Chesterfield Borough Council to engage with 328 individuals at apprenticeship and technical information events in the last two years, delivered within different communities in Chesterfield to raise awareness of apprenticeship and T-level opportunities locally to parents and carers.

Councillor Amanda Serjeant, deputy leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, said: “Allowing young people to make informed decisions about their future career paths by creating work placement opportunities, engaging with local businesses and attending workshops where they can ask employers questions directly is really important to allow them to understand what skills they will need to develop their learning.

“The Careers Made in Chesterfield programme has had a fantastic second year. The collaboration between schools and businesses, allows students to find out more about the options open to them in the workplace.

“If you’re a local business, I would encourage you to find out more about the scheme because it will help guide young people to into industries in the future, benefiting both them individually and the wider local economy.”

Diane Beresford, Deputy CEO of East Midlands Chamber, and Chair of the Skills and Employment Partnership said: “6 out of 10 East Midlands businesses say they have difficulty recruiting suitable staff, according to the findings of the Chamber’s Quarterly Economic Survey, which really underlines the importance of getting people upskilled. Maximising skillset when young is a gift to employers who want candidates that can hit the ground running.

“The Careers Made in Chesterfield programme is that bridge that brings young people’s thought processes into close alignment with the needs of businesses – what are the skills I need to prioritise; what line of work would best suit me; what should I do about getting there? Getting insight like that at a young age is invaluable really.”

City and Guilds present Excellence Award to Chesterfield College Group this National Manufacturing Day

Chesterfield College Group is absolutely delighted to have received an End Point Assessment Excellence Award from Awarding Body City and Guilds in recognition for exceptional apprenticeship success rates.

With several areas registering 100% success rates including Fabrication Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Metal Fabrication and Data Technician, the college’s long standing reputation for quality apprenticeship training is going from strength to strength.

Chesterfield celebrates National Manufacturing Day

Over 100 students from five schools got an exciting behind-the-scenes look at Chesterfield’s leading manufacturers as part of the first large-scale National Manufacturing Day event in Derbyshire.

Organised as part of the Made in Chesterfield Festival with support from the Work-wise Foundation, Destination Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire Council, the event coincided with Make UK’s nationwide open house on 25 September, when manufacturers across the UK opened their doors to students, communities and the public.

Pupils from The Bolsover School, Tupton Hall, Parkside Community School, Springwell Community College and Early Life Enterprise visited United Cast Bar, CBE+, Heraeus Electro-Nite (UK) Ltd, Penny Engineering and Weightron Bilanciai Ltd.

The day included factory tours, hands-on workshops, and an Innovation Challenge in the morning, with students presenting their ideas at Barrow Hill Roundhouse in the afternoon. Participants discovered a variety of manufacturing processes, as well as insights into engineering, design, and project management.

Event organiser, David Beet from United Cast Bar Ltd, said: “National Manufacturing Day is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the creativity and innovation happening right here in Chesterfield and Derbyshire. It’s inspiring to see young people so engaged and excited about the career possibilities in manufacturing.”

National Manufacturing Day celebrates the diversity of UK manufacturing and helps strengthen connections between education and industry, supporting the development of the skilled workforce needed for the future.

“As a council, we are passionate about helping our local economy grow and provide real chances of high-skilled employment for our communities, and this festival does just that.”

The Made in Chesterfield Festival runs until the end of October, providing young people with the opportunity to learn more about manufacturing and engineering careers in Chesterfield.

Upscaling Chesterfield firms can get funding and support from new programme

Businesses in Chesterfield looking to grow are invited to join a new programme of events and workshops made up of tailored academic and business support, with funding also available.

The new High Growth Academy aims to equip scaling businesses with the skills, knowledge and resources they need to innovate and grow sustainably. The Academy is delivered by East Midlands Chamber on behalf of EMCCA (the East Midlands Combined County Authority) and in partnership with the University of Derby, University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University.

The Academy is part of the wider High Growth Accelerator project that has received £450, 352 from the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF). It is open to businesses that can demonstrate 20% annual growth in revenue, employment, or market share over the past three consecutive years.

High Growth Academy support includes:

  • A series of workshops reflecting the needs of businesses at different stages of their growth journeys: ‘Growth Drivers’ for early-stage businesses with sessions on subjects such as sales, leadership and emerging markets; and ‘Growth Builders’ for senior leaders in more established businesses, with sessions on subjects such as governance, structure and performance management.
  • Monthly High Growth forums enabling businesses to access support, hear from industry experts and share insight with peers. The first forum, taking place on 6th November, “Big Business, Small Feel: Strategy, Systems, and the Human Touch” will be led by Professor Marvin Cooke OBE, former Executive Vice President for Manufacturing at Toyota Motor Europe. It will explore how organisations can maintain a personalised, human-centred approach while scaling operations through strategic planning and robust systems

Additional support to help businesses with their growth journeys is being offered as part of the wider High Growth Accelerator project:

  • One-to-one business support from a High Growth Adviser including advice, mentoring and diagnostic support on areas of relevance to the business
  • Innovation Vouchers of up to £5,000 to support businesses in accessing specialist support from university innovation delivery centres including on food innovation, chemistry innovation, aerospace technology, precision manufacturing, design matters, and virtual and immersive production
  • Student placement support of up to £2,000 to cover the salary cost of an intern for a minimum 8-week period to work on a defined project including, for example, developing new products, bringing new products to market or increasing sustainability
  • Training bursaries of up to £2,000 to attend one of the Chamber’s highly regarded Commercial Training courses, including its Director and Manager Development Programmes

East Midlands Chamber Deputy Chief Executive Diane Beresford said: “Growing at pace is only possible if the business has the right products, processes and people in place. Together with our partners at the University of Derby, University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University, East Midlands Chamber has curated a programme of expert High Growth Academy support through its High Growth Accelerator project.

“Our aim is to equip businesses with the skills and knowledge they need to rise to the challenges of today’s business environment, not least tackling recruitment, skills, cashflow and funding concerns. Whether a business is seeking to drive innovation, improve how it manages its finances, adapt its structures or coach its leaders and emerging leaders in high performance, we have the expertise and resources to turn ideas into real action.”

Mayor of the East Midlands Claire Ward said: “Businesses across the East Midlands have boundless potential for growth, but those same businesses tell me every day just how few hours in the day there are to think and plan for this. The High Growth Academy makes that space, drawing on the East Midlands Combined County Authority’s UKSPF funding but also expertise from business and academia. So, whether your business is starting or scaling, this could be the programme for you.”

Businesses can register by completing the Registration Form and a High Growth adviser will respond.

Chesterfield Champions are marking achievements in branding, national recognition, and skills development.


Addooco launches its next phase with a new brand

Addooco, specialists in private cloud, connectivity, and managed IT solutions, has unveiled a new brand identity. They developed the rebrand in collaboration with fellow Chesterfield Champion, Defeye Creative.

The rebrand represents a step in Addooco’s growth from a regional IT partner to a nationally recognised provider of infrastructure and digital transformation services. Addooco has reorganised its services into six categories: Complete, Grid, Clear Skies, Works, Secure, and Tech Team. A redesigned website is now live at Addooco — Make IT Happen

The project introduced messaging such as “Make It Happen” and “Engineers of Change” to reflect Addooco’s practical approach to IT solutions.

“This wasn’t just a design refresh; it’s a statement of who we’ve become,” said Richard Walters, CEO at Addooco. “We’ve grown with our clients and evolved with the market, and now we have a brand that reflects our ambition without losing our approachability.”

Defeye’s Director, Matt Pritchard, added: “Helping Addooco evolve visually and strategically was a privilege. We’ve worked with them for years and saw this as a chance to tell a bigger story, one of growth, ambition, and local excellence.”

East Midlands Chamber shortlisted for National Chamber of the Year

The British Chambers of Commerce has shortlisted East Midlands Chamber as a finalist for the “Chamber of the Year” award 2025. This is the highest recognition available to accredited chambers across the UK.

The Chamber, which supports businesses across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, and Leicestershire, has delivered a wide-ranging programme in recent years. This includes the £4.6m UKSPF-funded Accelerator project, which since 2023 has:

  • Supported more than 13,600 firms
  • Secured £9.7m in funding, grants, and loans
  • Helped safeguard or create 1,101 jobs
  • Produced decarbonisation plans for 1,093 businesses
  • Assisted 2,607 companies in improving productivity
  • Supported 196 exporters and 143 start-ups
  • Helped 400 SMEs adopt new technologies

“UK Chamber of the Year is the highest level of recognition a chamber of commerce in England, Wales, Scotland, or Northern Ireland can get, so to be announced as a finalist is tremendous,” said Scott Knowles, Chief Executive of East Midlands Chamber.

“Being shortlisted is a testament to the sheer dedication and hard work of the East Midlands Chamber team, underlining their commitment to championing the business community every day and leading growth across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, and Leicestershire.”

The British Chambers of Commerce will announce the winner in October.

DBCP strengthens building safety with new inspector

DBCP is the leading provider of building control services in Derbyshire and Staffordshire Moorlands. It has appointed Registered Building Inspector Luke Merrey to its team.

Luke’s background in property sales and lettings adds sector-wide insight. He holds 2A Registered Status with the Building Safety Competence Foundation, and has a Distinction in the CIOB Level 4 Diploma in Building Control Surveying. He is close to completing his Level 5 Diploma and is working towards 2F status.

His responsibilities will include plan checking, site inspections, advising applicants, and maintaining detailed records to ensure developments comply with building regulations.

“I’m thrilled to start my new role and continue my journey in Building Control. I wish I’d found out about Building Control when I was at school,” said Luke. “I am genuinely passionate about all areas of the sector. Seeing my knowledge grow through the LABC Academy Scheme has been amazing, and I am delighted to bring my learning and experience to architects, builders, and property owners throughout High Peak and Staffordshire Moorlands.”

David Pratt, Building Control Manager at DBCP, added: “We are delighted to have Luke on board. He has a deep understanding of the sector from both an inspector and a property manager perspective.”

Luke’s appointment highlights DBCP’s ongoing investment in qualified professionals. The industry is facing a national skills shortage following stricter regulations being introduced after the Grenfell tragedy.

High-performing businesses can also access support and funding for innovation (and talent) through the High Growth Accelerator project. Chesterfield and Derbyshire businesses must have achieved at least 20% annual growth in revenue, employment, or market share over each of the past three years.

Chesterfield Innovation Support Programme is operated by Chesterfield Borough Council with funding from East Midlands Combined County Authority. Accelerator projects are funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and delivered by East Midlands Chamber. Submit your details to be referred to the most appropriate expert for your business.


2. Boost your talent with the latest knowledge about skills

Chesterfield’s Skills Brokerage Service offers free advice to identify workforce development needs. Services include:

  • Assessing training and skills gaps
  • Accessing funding
  • Securing apprenticeship support
  • Developing talent pipelines

Some of the current courses with funding available include digital skills and marketing, management, team leading, English and Maths, green skills, and property and construction.

High-growth businesses can access talent grants to help grow sustainably at scale. Support includes a range of high-growth workshops and forums. To be eligible, Chesterfield and Derbyshire businesses must have achieved at least 20% annual growth in revenue, employment, or market share over each of the past three years.

3. Make global trade easier with advice, support and funding

The Chamber has launched the East Midlands International Trade Network, with the first local meeting taking place in Clowne in autumn 2025. The chaired forum includes support, advice from industry experts and peers, and opportunities to shape the development and delivery of the Export Accelerator project.

The first forum meeting follows the success of the Export Accelerator project, which launched in the spring and has so far helped almost 230 businesses navigate the complexities of international trade. The project supports initial research, the launch of a product or service to a new overseas market and more.

The Chamber’s latest Quarterly Economic Survey for the East Midlands revealed a 10% drop in overseas sales and 3% in orders,” says Deputy Chief Executire, Diane Beresford, “which really underlines the extent of the challenges when exporting overseas so it’s no surprise that take-up of the Export Accelerator grants and training bursaries has been so high.

“We have some brilliant examples of businesses tapping into consultancy support in areas such as CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism) and attending tradeshows as far afield as Japan. If they haven’t already, I’d urge businesses to sign up for the forum meetings in September to find out about the wide range of services to boost their overseas trade.”

Grant funding of up to £8,000 is available for specialist consultancy, overseas trade show visits, salaries and equipment. Along with fully funded workshops and webinars, there is the opportunity to apply for a £2,000 bursary, which can be used to attend one of the Chamber’s International Trade training courses, including its flagship BCC-Accredited International Trade Operations and Procedures qualification.

Business awards success for Chesterfield Champions

Chesterfield’s business community is proving its strength this summer, with a series of business award wins and shortlists placing local firms in the spotlight.

Mortgage 1st, Roy Peters Estates, and CMP Legal, all Chesterfield Champions, have received major recognition for their innovation, leadership, and community impact.

Together, their successes showcase the talent and ambition fuelling the town’s economy.


Mortgage 1st – Industry leadership and community impact

Mortgage 1st, a Chesterfield-based brokerage, is celebrating an outstanding summer, earning national titles and local recognition.

In June, the firm was crowned Mortgage Broker of the Year (11–50 advisers) at the Financial Reporter Broker’s Choice Awards, winning for the third consecutive year.

The following month, Managing Director Jon Stones was named Business Leader of the Year at the prestigious British Mortgage Awards, praised for his people-first culture and ambitious leadership. Regarded as one of the industry’s most respected events, the awards are often called ‘the Oscars of the mortgage world’.

That same month, Mortgage 1st also received the Business Community Award at the Bolsover Place Programme anniversary event, recognising its inspiring work with schools and young people.

Roy Peters Estates – Award-winning standards

Roy Peters Estates is also celebrating both individual and company success.

After dedicated study, apprentice George completed his Level 3 in Housing and Property Management with Distinction. He also gained his Apprenticeship and Membership of the Association of Residential Letting Agents (Propertymark).

George will be presented with his certificates by Founder and Managing Partner Roy Cutt. The presentation will take place in the company’s garden.

The garden was created by the directors to recognise the team’s efforts in achieving the British Property Award. The firm has once again been named Best Letting Agency in Chesterfield at the British Property Awards. This marks its second year running and fourth time overall.

Judged through mystery shopping, the award highlights the consistently high standards delivered by the team.

Roy Peters Estates has also joined the Propertymark Company Advantage programme, further underlining its commitment to industry-leading standards.

CMP Legal – National recognition in the legal sector

CMP Legal has been shortlisted for six awards across the Yorkshire Legal Awards and the East Midlands Chamber Enterprising Women Awards.

Co-founder and solicitor Anna Cattee is a finalist for Yorkshire Lawyer of the Year. She was recognised for leading £140 million worth of corporate transactions in just 12 months. A record rivaling some of the region’s largest law firms. She is also one of the few Notary Publics in the region and a mother to three young children.

“Over that time, I’ve gone from being an employed junior lawyer to a salaried partner and now co-founder of a successful law firm,” Anna said. “These award nominations are wonderful recognition for everyone at CMP Legal. Without teamwork, we could not have achieved what we have in less than five years.”

CMP Legal is also a finalist in three further categories at the Yorkshire Legal Awards:

Trainee of the Year (Harrison Easley), Employment Law, and Corporate & Commercial.

Harrison’s nomination celebrates his innovative work introducing AI into the firm’s practice management system.

The firm is also shortlisted in the Enterprising Women Awards for Team of the Year and Small Business of the Year. Winners will be announced on 26 September 2025.

These nominations follow national recognition earlier this year. CMP Legal was listed in the Legal 500 for Corporate and Commercial. An exceptional achievement for its first submission.
The firm also won Niche Law Firm of the Year and Legal and Dispute Resolution Team of the Year at the Sheffield & District Law Society Awards.

DBCP apprenticeship programme grows future talent

A former teaching assistant from Sheffield has taken her first steps towards a new career after joining DBCP as part of the company’s successful apprenticeship programme.

Shannon Edwards-Owen, 23, is starting her role as a Level 2 Business Administration Apprentice with the Chesterfield-based provider of building control services.

The former Parkside School student previously worked in education. She completed a foundation degree in Working with Young People and Families at Sheffield Hallam University. However, she decided it was time for a change and began looking for opportunities to develop her skills in a business setting.

“The apprenticeship with DBCP offers me the chance to build a career in a business environment, which is something I have become increasingly curious about,” Shannon said. “You make career choices at 16 which don’t always meet the needs of the adult you become.”

As part of her 18-month apprenticeship, Shannon will spend one day a week at Chesterfield College. She will spend the rest of her time gaining valuable workplace experience with DBCP’s busy Business Administration team, based at Dunston.

“We were impressed with Shannon’s CV. Beyond her qualifications, she’s shown an exceptional work ethic across multiple sectors since leaving school.” Said David Pratt, DBCP’s Building Control Manager. “We can see that she has what it takes to balance work and training. She’s precisely the kind of talent we’re proud to nurture at DBCP.”

Previously in her career, Shannon has worked in education, retail, and hospitality since she was 16 years old. She is no stranger to learning new processes.

Following on, Shannon said: “I could tell immediately that DBCP had a positive, engaging team and a history of supporting career-entry apprentices. The interview was a great experience. I was really encouraged to know how well other apprentices had done and to see first-hand the roles they now have within the business. I’m excited to start a new chapter in my career with DBCP.”

DBCP has built a strong reputation for supporting and investing in apprentices. Several of its team members began their careers through the same scheme.

Apprentice Building Control Surveyor Charlotte Gladwin won the title of LABC Newcomer of the Year in 2024. She has already gained recognition for her achievements. Charlotte is now in the running for Health & Public Service Apprentice of the Year. The Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire Apprenticeship Awards 2025 will present the award.

Additionally, Harvey Ellis, another DBCP apprentice, is also a finalist competing for Higher Apprentice of the Year. Adding to the celebrations, DBCP has made the shortlist for SME Employer of the Year.

Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire Apprenticeship Awards will reveal the winners on Thursday 2 October.

Chesterfield talent shines at regional apprenticeship awards

Six organisations from Chesterfield have been named finalists in the 2025 Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire Apprenticeship Awards, underlining the town’s ongoing commitment to developing future talent.

The nominees cover sectors ranging from healthcare and construction to education and digital industries. This reflects the diversity of apprenticeships that support sustainable business growth in Chesterfield.

One of the individuals recognised for her outstanding contribution to apprenticeship mentoring is Rachel Griffiths, Office Manager at Dalton Roofing. Her dedication to supporting young talent has earned her a place as a finalist in the Mentor of the Year category.

Rachel said: “I am totally overwhelmed to be shortlisted. Supporting and helping others is one of the most rewarding areas of my job, so to be recognised for this is amazing.

“Having apprentices in our business is extremely important to us. It keeps the younger generation and talent coming through.”

Juniper Training has also been recognised for its long-standing commitment to apprenticeships. With over four decades of experience delivering high-quality programmes, the organisation continues to play a vital role in preparing young people for the world of work.

Sian Frater, Marketing Manager at Juniper Training, said: “Being recognised for our work is a huge achievement for the whole Juniper Training team.”

Ceremony to recognise finalists of 2025 Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire Apprenticeship Awards

The awards, hosted by National World Events, celebrate the best apprentices, mentors and employers across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. Winners will be announced at a ceremony on Thursday, 2nd October at the Village Hotel in Nottingham.

Chesterfield’s strong representation this year reflects the town’s ongoing investment in skills development. Initiatives such as the Chesterfield Skills Action Plan and the Chesterfield Champions network support this. These efforts are helping to create life-changing opportunities for young people while strengthening the local economy.

Connected Futures celebrates workplace role models with learning disabilities and autism

The Connected Futures project has launched a powerful new video series celebrating employees with learning disabilities (LD) and autism spectrum conditions (ASC) who are thriving in the workplace. The initiative is a partnership between  Direct Education Business Partnership (DEBP), East Midlands County Combined Authority (EMCCA) , Nottinghamshire County Council and Derbyshire County Council. It aims to highlight real stories of success and inspire more inclusive employment practices across the region.

Seven individuals are featured in the videos, each filmed in their workplace and sharing their experiences, job roles, challenges, and advice for others. The series was officially launched in July at a special Role Models Roll-Out event held at the University of Nottingham..

The Connected Futures project was developed in response to evidence showing that young people with LD and/or ASC rarely see people like themselves represented in the workplace. These videos were commissioned to help change that by showcasing relatable examples of success and encouraging more young people into paid employment.

“We are incredibly proud to highlight the stories of these employees, in a range of different job roles and sectors, and with different experiences,” said Paula Symonds, Projects Manager at DEBP. “Our hope is to inspire others to move towards secure employment and inspire more employers to create inclusive, supportive, and sustainable workplaces.”

One of the featured role models, Owen, who works in pest control at the University of Nottingham, shared that one of his initial concerns was that people might think those with disabilities can’t work. Owen and the other role models have shown that this is far from the truth—they have talent, drive, and the ability to succeed.

The Connected Futures project is a strong example of how collaboration across local authorities and education partnerships can lead to meaningful change. It also reflects Chesterfield’s commitment to inclusive growth and opportunity for all.

Why I’m thinking about the future now 

This month, young people across the country have been waiting anxiously for their exam results. It’s a big moment, often with pressure to do well. It got me thinking about what the future might hold for the next generation, including my little one, who has just begun exploring the world around her. 

She already loves ‘helping’ me with work, usually by grabbing my computer mouse and enthusiastically rearranging my circuit diagrams! I’m an electronics engineer and run a social enterprise that designs technology to break down barriers. Our work opens up music, creative arts and wellbeing activities for people with disabilities.  

I wouldn’t be where I am without my college physics teacher. He had previously worked at Rolls Royce and encouraged anyone interested in engineering to try it.  

That spark led me to university, where I chose to specialise in electronic engineering. Mum said it would open more doors, and it did. 

At the time, only nine other women joined my engineering cohort of 300. But I didn’t let that stop me.  

Later, whilst studying in Toulouse, I saw so many women in engineering. It reminded me about the importance of representation. If young people don’t see someone like them in a role, it’s easy to assume it’s not for them. 

Thankfully, Chesterfield offers local industry visits and exciting projects. So, our young people can enjoy exploring careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) and beyond. 

Did you know that over 4,500 people work in manufacturing here? With more to come. 

A new rail innovation and training centre is being built near Barrow Hill Roundhouse. It’s set to welcome learners next year, and rail companies are already showing interest in using its specialist research and development facilities. A brilliant example of the many possibilities right on our doorstep. 

So, how do we help our kids discover these kinds of opportunities?  

Fortunately, we can access brilliant local resources: 

  • Interactive careers sessions – fun events to help young people and parents (hosted by Chesterfield Borough Council)
  • School careers activities – including employer visits and work-prep sessions
  • Workplace tours – a behind-the-scenes look at industries in action (Visit Made in Chesterfield for more information)
  • Visits from employers – like the engineers from AECOM who recently visited Abercrombie Primary School

One day, I’ll tell my daughter what I think every child should hear: You don’t need everything figured out. You just need someone to say, “go for it.”

And in Chesterfield, I know she’ll grow up surrounded by people who will do just that.
