Servicing and repairing your bike in Chesterfield

It is essential that you keep your bikes serviced.  If you are new to cycling or just need assistance with maintenance and repairs, you can of course head to a range of bike shops across the town. Still, you may want to consider Chesterfield Dr. Bike or the Monkey Park Cycle Workshop, two community initiatives to support cyclists. 

Chesterfield DR Bike is a pop-up workshop that takes place across Chesterfield.   Trained mechanics can adjust and repair your bike while you wait.  There is no charge for the labour, just for the spares used.  They are also all keen local cyclists so will be able to give you tips and advice on the best routes around the area.      

The Monkey Park Cycle Workshop is located adjacent to the Holmebrook Valley Trail in Brampton and offers a full range of repair services and a range of reconditioned bikes for sale. If you have old bikes gathering dust in the shed, they will take them and refurbish them for someone else in Chesterfield to use.

Cycling for everyone

The social enterprise Inclusive Pedals based in Queen’s Park provides cycling opportunities for those with disabilities.

Don’t miss the Chesterfield Cycle Festival which takes place every June.  This celebration of cycling in Chesterfield serves up a variety of events to coincide with National Bike Week. Accessible rides, bike workshops, talks, a fun day and a wide variety of friendly bike rides in and around town, everyone is sure to find something to their taste!

If you enjoy cycling and want to meet like-minded people, you may want to consider a local club.  Chesterfield Spire Cycling Club offers a range of activities, including socially distanced and virtual rides. 

Have a passion for cycling in and around Chesterfield? Cycle Chesterfield aims to increase the cycle infrastructure in and around the town and show that cycling is a viable and sustainable form of local transport.

VisitEngland Quality Marque awarded to Matlock Farm Park 

Popular Peak District attraction Matlock Farm Park, located between Matlock and Chesterfield, is celebrating after recently becoming a VisitEngland accredited visitor attraction. 

The farm park has been sited as a strong example of its type and evidence of high quality and standards was seen by judges across the visitor journey. A high overall score of 88% was awarded across areas including the attraction itself, catering, retail and toilets, with the rating for staff performance excelling at 95% and cleanliness 96%. 

Lotty Hawkins, Communications Manager of Matlock Farm Park, said: We’re delighted to have been recognised by Visit England in this way. It’s testament to our hard-working team and a desire to really give a wide range of visitors the best experience possible”. 

Celebrating its 20th anniversary last year, the park has seen many changes over the years since its humble beginnings of a few outdoor animal pens, small animal barn and a 15-seater tearoom. 

Now several times the size, it is home to a wide range of native and non-native animals. Activities include sheep racing, meerkat talks and alpaca trekking, with facilities such as multi-zone play areas, a horse-riding school, café, function rooms and a Changing Places facility. Special events take place throughout the year. 

The attraction took gold in the 2023 Peak District & Derbyshire’s Tourism Awards for Best Visitor Attraction and won the Accessible & Inclusive award. 

Managing Director and founder Allan Finlay said: “We’ve really surpassed everything we set out to do. My background was hospitality and my wife Virginia’s was farming – we started the park off just as a little hobby to do together. I look now at being awarded the VisitEngland Quality Marque and what we’ve achieved to bring visitors such enjoyment and I feel immensely proud”.

The successful attraction has also been added to the X17  bus service, giving visitors to Chesterfield the opportunity to use public transport to visit Matlock Farm Park.  The bus will stop at the park twice a day for both outward journeys (stopping mid-morning and lunchtime), and return journeys (lunchtime and late afternoon).

Business brings a splash of colour to Chesterfield town centre

The Colour Collective Pottery Painting & Well-Being Studio has recently opened a new shop in the heart of Chesterfield town centre.

The new studio on Rose Hill offers pottery painting for all ages alongside a therapy room offering a range of holistic and complementary therapies.

Carla continued, ” I started my pottery painting journey in Bakewell, I wanted to be in Chesterfield, and once a shop became available that I could afford, I jumped at the chance.”

Save the dates – Peddler Market returns to Chesterfield this May and July

Chesterfield town centre will be buzzing in May and July as Peddler Market returns for two more weekend events this summer.

The popular street food market will be in New Square on 17 to18 May and 19 to 20 July. These are the final events for 2024 as the multi-million pound regeneration of the town centre is expected to start over the summer.

Ben Smith, Director at Peddler Market, said: “We are looking forward to signing off the summer with a bang! Peddler offers a fantastic opportunity to meet up with friends and family in the heart of the town centre; enjoy a drink, sample some of the UK’s most exciting street food talent and soak up the atmosphere from the live stage.

“With New Square being rejuvenated later this summer, we are happy to have provided a blueprint for how street food can play a pivotal role in transforming Chesterfield’s night-time economy in years to come.”

There will be a fantastic range of award-winning street food from around the world at the event in May.

Syiok-Lah will be serving up authentic Malyasian cuisine, Get Wurst will be offering German style Currywurst and Bratwurst, Cow Boys will be bringing brilliant burgers, The Spicy Biker will have a range of Indian street food, Brúm Mì will be dishing out East Asian street food, Luigi will be offering a taste of Italy with Arancini and Panzerotti, De Boeuf will be slicing up their mature beef, Madame Crêpe will have a range of fresh crepes and Vanilla Bean will be serving coffee and baked treats.

The weekend also features a strong line-up of live music with something for everyone to enjoy including, indie-rock band The N.S.O, folkie singer-songwriter Jack Weston, pop punk outfit 2x Fast,  Viva La Vintage  who performs a mixture of classic soul, swing and rock n roll, singer songwriter Masha Jana, and unique band Honey Trap, with some more acts still to be confirmed.

On Saturday Sunflower Dance will be providing family friendly entertainment with a dance workshop designed for children.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “Peddler Market has been a unique event in our town, and I know lots of people have come out to support the three events so far. I hope to see lots of returning faces and new visitors come along in May and July to show their support for this fantastic event before we start work on the regeneration of the town centre.

“These events are a fantastic way to kickstart your summer in Chesterfield with your friends and families.”

The Revitalising the Heart of Chesterfield project will see extensive works to key town centre areas to support a range of uses including markets, events, festivals and more. The work is due to start in summer 2024 in the Market Place.

Funding to help bring the event to Chesterfield has been provided through the Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF).

Chesterfield Borough Council received £2.69m of UKSPF funding which will be invested across the borough. A portion of this will be invested into promoting the borough as a place to visit, and providing support for arts, culture, and heritage activities.

International Horse Trials set to return to Chatsworth

Chatsworth is set to host its annual showcase of world class equestrian action this month, with a variety of entertainment and activities on offer during the much-loved three-day event.

The Chatsworth International Horse Trials sees the return of the British leg of the FEI Eventing Nations Cup, where the world’s best riders will tackle Chatsworth’s technical cross-country course, alongside elite dressage and show jumping competitions.

The challenging cross-country course is always a firm favourite, but the event also offers a range of activities for all ages and abilities including; the Shetland Grand National; have-a-go dog shows where visitors can let furry friends explore courses designed to test speed and agility; as well as the entertaining and educational sheep shows hosted by New Zealander Richard Savory and birds of prey displays from The Yorkshire Countryman.

This year will also see the return of the hugely popular shopping village and fine food walk, home to specialist retailers, as well as local businesses and artisan makers offering the finest crafts, homewares, gifts and more.

Throughout the weekend, families can enjoy wall climbing and face painting, as well as channelling their own artistic talents at drop-in pottery painting sessions to create their own piece of art to take home. For those wanting to explore beyond the event, the house and garden are open as usual, as is the farmyard, where younger visitors can learn more about their favourite friendly animals including goats, guinea pigs and chickens, and discover a number of Chatsworth’s rare breeds including Suffolk Punch horses and the majestic Cream Legbar Chickens.

From the farmyard, young adventurers can take the secret tunnel to the recently refurbished woodland adventure playground, including the newly opened tall towers and slides, as well as a climbing wall, zip wire and dedicated area for younger children, providing hours of adventure. Children can enjoy ascending to the top of the towers for a bird’s-eye view amongst the treetops and climbing into the huge Great Spotted Woodpecker – a reflection of the spectacular nature which surrounds Chatsworth.

We’re proud to once again play host to some of the world’s best riders with the FEI Eventing Nations Cup, but beyond eventing there is so much more for all ages to enjoy – from supporting local artisan makers to marvelling at the Sheep Show Hustle!

“Whether you’re a first-time visitor looking for a fun day out for the whole family, or a seasoned equestrian enthusiast, there’s truly something for everyone!”

General admission tickets for adults are priced at £17.50 for Friday and £35 on Saturday or Sunday, and children’s tickets are £11. All tickets include free parking and child prices are for ages 5-15 inclusive. Admission is free to carers who are visiting with the person they care for.

The family event is part of Chatsworth‘s theme for 2024 – ‘Celebrating Childhood’, which includes a host of activities including a family festival from 25-27 May and the Picturing Childhood exhibition in the house, aiming to encourage visitors to experience Chatsworth from a new perspective.

Steam train tour to arrive in Chesterfield and showcase local landmarks

Two steam train tours are set to arrive in Chesterfield, bringing passengers from the south of England to discover our historic landmarks.

The Steam Dreams Rail. Co, provider of unique and magical steam train journeys, will be hosting two incredible day trips to Chesterfield, one from East Anglia to Chatsworth, Crich & Barrow Hill on 8th May and another from London to Chatsworth, Crich & Barrow Hill Rail Ale Festival on 16th May.

The journeys will be pulled by the historic 46100 Royal Scot, providing visitors to immerse themselves in the glamour of yesteryear with an elegant steam-hauled journey. Once passengers arrive in Chesterfield, they will then be able to take part in several excursions around North Derbyshire’s landmarks.

Passengers are able to travel in one of three classes, including Pullman Dining, First Cass or Premium Standard.

For glamour-seekers, your indulgent journey can be extended to the elegance of Chatsworth House. Alternatively, visit the town of Chesterfield or continue to Barrow Hill before we embark on our return journey aboard the same beautifully restored vintage carriages in which we started our journey.”

Chesterfield festival of cycling to take place this summer

The annual Chesterfield Festival of Cycling is set to take place in the town this June.

Cycle Chesterfield, a local community group dedicated to promoting cycling in Chesterfield is gearing up for the event. It aims to showcase the cycle infrastructure in and around town, promote cycling as an alternative means of transport and build links across our communities.

This year’s festival runs from the 7th – 16th of June and offers a diverse range of activities designed to cater to people of all abilities and ages. From guided rides at a steady, inclusive pace exploring the town’s hidden gems to interesting talks by cycle adventurers, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

One of the festival’s highlights is the Holmebrook Valley Park Cycle Funday, where families can enjoy a day of outdoor activities and games. This event not only fosters a sense of community but also encourages residents to embrace cycling as a fun and accessible recreational activity.

There will be a variety of themed, free, guided recreational rides which will demonstrate some of the cycling infrastructure in Chesterfield and the wider area, including the brand-new section of the East/West route. Rides will generally start in the town centre and will head out in a range of directions, including rides taking in Grassmoor, Holymoorside and Hollingwood. The rides will proceed at a steady, inclusive pace.

In addition to rides, the festival will be hosting a talk by author, adventurer and cyclist Emily Chappell. Emily was the first woman to finish the Transcontinental Race in 2016, has cycled across Asia from Turkey to China and has authored two books about her exploits.

Moreover, the festival serves as a platform to showcase Chesterfield’s cycling culture. From taster sessions for adapted bikes for disabled adults to BMXers showcasing their skills at Ringwood Park to an exploration of some of the town’s public art on the Art Trail ride, the festival celebrates the diversity and vibrancy of the local cycling community.

Cycle Chesterfield has been a driving force behind numerous initiatives aimed at improving cycling infrastructure and awareness in the area. Through lobbying efforts and community outreach programs, the group continues to push for safer streets and better cycling amenities, not only improving the quality of life for residents but also contributing to a greener, more resilient future for our community.

Full lineup confirmed for Chesterfield Pride 2024

The full lineup of acts has been confirmed for the 2024 Chesterfield Pride Festival at Stand Road Park, with Liberty X confirmed as the headliner.

Taking place on Sunday, July 21st, this year’s event will see two stages packed with chart topping stars, including singer/ rapper Amelle, formerly part of the iconic Sugababes.

Also appearing is Clubland’s most successful artist Kelly Llorenna who has over 15 top 40 singles to her name, and is best known for the massive anthem “Set You Free”.

The Main Stage will also see performances from ’80s heart throb Nathan Moore from Brother Beyond, ’00s pop legends The Cheeky Girls and will be headlined by the incredible Liberty X who have been kindly sponsored by East Midlands Designer Outlet.

The Kranlee Cabaret Stage will be headlined by the outrageous Kitty Scott Claus from RuPaul’s Drag Race. Also from Drag Race, the super talented Scarlett Harlett will appear at the event.

The Cabaret Stage will also see arguably the world’s best Lady Gaga tribute Donna Marie, who has performed across the globe as Gaga. International Drag Queens KY Kelly and Miss Penny have also been confirmed to perform. There will also be some fantastic local unsigned artists including Mill, Darlin Trio and Lexi Whiteside taking to the stage.

Organiser Dan Walker says: “The team and I are really proud of how the event has grown in recent years and this line up is one of our most exciting to date. To have this caliber of artists perform at the event is testament to the amazing support the event has received in the last few years.

“We are passionate about the event being community driven and we believe the event is fantastic value. We love welcoming new attendees every year.”

Creating contemporary spaces in Chesterfield and Staveley town centres

New artist’s impressions have been revealed as two major regeneration schemes in Chesterfield and Staveley take milestone steps to transform our town centres into contemporary spaces.

Work to revamp Chesterfield town centre including our historic market place begins this summer Chesterfield Borough Council has announced.

The Revitalising the Heart of Chesterfield project will transform the look, feel and flow of key public spaces. The project has already seen work begin on the refurbishment of our town’s iconic Stephenson Memorial Hall, and improvements to Packers Row.

A new layout has been confirmed for Market Square – making it easier for shoppers to explore, with modernised stalls complemented with vibrant new canopies in heritage colours and the historic Town Pump a unique feature.

New Square will become a more flexible space designed to support the main market and speciality markets and host festivals and events to bring our town centre to life.

Rykneld Square will become a green space where we can enjoy our much-loved Crooked Spire, and better connect this landmark to the town centre.

Imaginative new lighting will be installed at Spire Walk, enhancing the appearance of our iconic Crooked Spire at night, and creating a more attractive link into Rykneld Square.

Improved paving and lighting will revamp Corporation Street – a key entrance from Chesterfield Railway Station to Chesterfield Museum and the Pomegranate Theatre.

In Staveley, formal plans have been submitted for a new landmark building between Staveley Miners Welfare building and Staveley High Street.

The plans are a key part of the £6 million Staveley 21 project, which will transform the marketplace to support the hosting of new events, provide new tiered seating for outdoor theatre and open-air cinema screenings, and create natural play equipment for families. The scheme also includes better connections to Chesterfield Canal, improved lighting and a greener town centre.

The new building aims to reflect Staveley’s heritage with a modern twist, opening the view from Market Street into the town centre.

Several uses for the building are currently being considered including as a potential site for Staveley library or for retail, leisure, and business start-up uses.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said:

“The Revitalising the Heart of Chesterfield project will be completed in phases and is due for completion in 2025.

“We have a strong track record of making the most of external funding opportunities to invest in the future of our borough, and through projects like the Revitalising the Heart of Project this work will bring real improvements for the residents and businesses of our town, while boosting our appeal to visitors.”

Speaking about Staveley, Councillor Sarvent said:

“Town centres are changing and by trying to expand the offer, creating new opportunities for events and social spaces we want to boost visitor numbers and provide the space for local businesses to thrive.

“We’ll continue to engage directly with local businesses and residents over the coming months to finalise the plans and ensure the project meets their needs, including hosting more drop-in sessions for residents.”

The pavilion building has been designed by Chesterfield firm, Whittam Cox Architects. Ryan Fish, Associate Director at Whittam Cox Architects, said:

“Our team has meticulously developed the Pavilion building as part of the Staveley centre masterplan with utmost care and consideration. This project presented us with a unique opportunity to influence a scheme close to home, drawing on our intricate knowledge of the local area. The result is a contemporary development that not only honours Staveley’s heritage but also serves as a catalyst and hub of activity for future development, aligning with the long-term vision for the area.”

Ivan Fomin, Chair of the Staveley Town Deal Board, said: “The Staveley 21 project has the potential to be transformative for the town centre, ensuring that it is a place where local people and visitors will want to spend time whilst also supporting local businesses to grow not only now but in the future. Our aim through the town deal is ensuring that Staveley is a place where people can Start, Stay and Grow and the town centre reflects this with something to entice all ages to visit, support local businesses and help them to grow.”

The Revitalising the Heart of Chesterfield project will be completed in phases and is due for completion in 2025.

The Staveley area is benefitting from £25.2m worth of government funding through the Town Deal, which must be spent by March 2026.

Chesterfield Children’s Festival set to welcome families for more fun in Queen’s Park this July

Organisers have confirmed that the Chesterfield Children’s Festival will return to Queen’s Park on the 27th and 28th of July.

This year’s event is being organised with the help of local young people and will include live movie sets, catwalks, an aerial workshop for babies and family life drawing!

The free event organised by Junction Arts and funded by Arts Council England, is a two-day festival for families that celebrates the joy of childhood, imagination and play.

Last year over 8,000 families attended the event, with over 4,000 children participating in the activities, which ranged from yoga classes to tie-dye workshops! Other highlights of the weekend included live music, comedy for kids, silent disco walking tours, theatre, Chinese storytelling and actual reality arcade games. The event attracted thousands of tourists from outside of the town, bringing over 3,500 people into Chesterfield.

New for 2024 is the Project Producers; a group of volunteers aged between 15-20 years of age that are advising and helping to plan the festival alongside Junction Arts. The group was formed earlier this year, and the idea is to give young people in Chesterfield an opportunity to have their say and develop some event planning skills.

This year’s event will take place on the first weekend of the summer holidays, 10 am – 4 pm each day. The festival is completely free, no booking is required, and visitors can turn up on the day to enjoy the activities.

The full festival line-up will be announced in June but acts confirmed so far include; Block Buster Factory, an award-winning immersive street show, where members of the public get to be part of a live movie set! There will also be an interactive family catwalk, family life drawing workshops and Take Flight – an aerial workshop for babies and their grown-ups!

To make the festival more accessible, Junction Arts has enlisted the help of RevoLOOtion, which provides mobile vehicles that enable disabled children and adults to use the toilet or be changed with dignity and respect, the RevoLOOtion service helps to break down barriers that often exclude them from participating in activities and events.

Jemma Burton, Project Coordinator from Junction Arts said: “We had an amazing response to the festival last year and I’m delighted that we are bringing it back to Chesterfield this summer. We’re also excited to have our Project Producers working with us this year, the group of young people are helping us to shape the festival by sharing their thoughts and experiences, as well as volunteering to plan and manage parts of the event. It’s great to have some youthful energy and creativity in the team!

“The full line-up is still being worked on, but I can say that we’ll have lots of creative activities for children of all ages to get involved in, plus some amazing live entertainment – we can’t wait to see you there.”
