Vicar Lane Shopping Centre invites visitors to celebrate the coronation in St. James’ Square

On Saturday 6th May, Vicar Lane Shopping Centre is set to host a celebration to mark the coronation of King Charles III in St James’ Square for shoppers and visitors alike to enjoy.

Between 10am and 3pm, families can pull up a deckchair on the green in St James’ Square which will be laid out amongst some family favourite giant games.

For those wanting to watch the ceremony, Vicar Lane will be showing the Coronation Service live on their big screen which is due to begin at 11am.

Throughout the day, there’ll be many more activities to marvel at such as stilt walkers, face painters and royal themed entertainers, bringing a sense of joy to Steeplegate and Vicar Lane. no booking is required and all the entertainment is free.

In the lead up to the event, Vicar Lane Shopping Centre are running a very royal social media competition, giving one lucky follower the chance to win a Hamper Fit for A King worth up to £80! Keep an eye out on their social media channels for further details.

One of the country’s leading street food markets is coming to Chesterfield

A renowned street food market will be bringing its unique offer to Chesterfield, as the latest addition to the borough’s exciting events programme.

Chesterfield Borough Council has partnered with Peddler Events, which has operated an extremely successful street food market from their base in Kelham Island in Sheffield.

Peddler Events champions local creators and artisans – over the last eight years they have become known for delivering award winning cuisine, craft drinks, live music, bespoke products, art, and excellent entertainment.

Peddler Events will be bringing their unique offer to Chesterfield with the first market set to take place in June with more planned for later in 2023.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “We’re really excited to welcome Peddler to Chesterfield – it’s fantastic that they see Chesterfield as a place to invest and grow their business, and they bring with them a great reputation. We know this is the kind of memorable experience that our residents want to be able to enjoy on their doorstep, as well as attracting new visitors to our town centre.

“Having Peddler bring their vast experience to our town enhances our already packed events programme, and also creates the opportunity to support local businesses by attracting more people into the town centre in the afternoon, and into the evening.

“We look forward to working closely with the team at Peddler, together with our local businesses in Chesterfield, and I hope that lots of people will come along and support these events.”

Peddler Market attracts around 8,000 visitors to its monthly street market event and has helped cement Sheffield’s place on the culinary map whilst also supporting the regeneration of the former industrial area it operates in.

The Chesterfield events represents a new opportunity for Peddler Events to work with more Chesterfield based businesses and support the wider town centre.

The first two-day event is scheduled to take place in Chesterfield town centre on Friday 23 and Saturday 24 June.

Funding to help bring the event to Chesterfield has been provided through the Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF).

Chesterfield Borough Council received £2.69m of UKSPF funding which will be invested across the borough over the next three years. A portion of this will be invested into promoting the borough as a place to visit, and providing support for arts, culture, and heritage activities.

Chatsworth opens for new season with design led exhibition adding to 500 years of creativity

Chatsworth is once again back open to the public for the Summer season, with a new exhibition titled ‘Mirror Mirror: Reflections on Design at Chatsworth.’

The historic North Derbyshire house has always been a centre for creativity, with successive generations of the Cavendish family commissioning art and design contemporary to their times.

The new exhibition continues this legacy and is now on display in the house and garden until the end of September 2023.

The exhibition features commissioned works by 16 contemporary designers. Each has responded to one of Chatsworth’s spaces, either indoors or outside in the garden and have been chosen for the way that they reflect on the key issues of today, from climate, sustainability and equality to how people connect.

Alex Hodby, Senior Curator of Programme at Chatsworth, said: “This project is a fantastic opportunity to reflect on the design histories at Chatsworth and bring them to the fore with an exciting array of international artists and designers. We’re fascinated with how the contemporary works in our exhibition have used materials in innovative ways to make functional and intriguing objects that are also deeply connected to the house, garden and the collections here at Chatsworth – a place where design has been a key feature for 500 years.”

Jane Marriott, Director of Chatsworth House Trust, said: “We have invited 16 world renowned artists and designers to reflect on 500 years of design and craftsmanship at Chatsworth. Their bold, inspiring and sometimes humorous works allow us to connect with the many stories at Chatsworth and to also reflect on the urgent issues of our time from our use of materials, sustainability and the climate crisis. As a charity, we are very proud to continue to commission and support artists and by doing so we make Chatsworth’s history come alive, while looking forward to the future.”

Lord Burlington, Chairman of the Chatsworth House Trust said: “We are thrilled to bring Mirror Mirror and these 16 remarkable designers to Chatsworth, to continue the tradition of placing new objects and ideas in direct conversation with creative choices from generations past. With this exhibition, as well as a significantly enhanced programme of talks, tours and workshops, the aim is to ensure Chatsworth upholds its role as a gathering place and a resource for artists, thinkers, makers and learners. We look forward to welcoming them all in 2023.”

Co-curated by Alex Hodby, Senior Curator of Programme at Chatsworth, and writer, historian and curator Glenn Adamson, the exhibition places contemporary works in direct relationship to the historic design at Chatsworth, creating unexpected connections with the house’s architecture, interiors, furniture, ceramics, as well its essential materials of glass, stone, wood, and light.

The sixteen contemporary artists and designers featured in the exhibition are: Ini Archibong, Michael Anastassiades, Wendell Castle, Andile Dyalvane, Ndidi Ekubia, Najla El Zein, Formafantasma, Joris Laarman, Max Lamb, Fernando Laposse, Jay Sae Jung Oh, Samuel Ross, Chris Schanck, Ettore Sottsass, Faye Toogood, and Joseph Walsh.

Traders invited to book a market stall for Medieval Fun Day in Chesterfield

Bookings are now being taken to allocate market stalls at the forthcoming Medieval Fun Day on 25 July. The popular event will take place in Chesterfield town centre from 10am to 4pm and will include a range of entertainment for all the family.

Traders looking to book a market stall at this popular event are able to register online by completing this online form. Tuesdays are not a regular market day, so this event is in addition to Chesterfield Borough Council’s usual market schedule.

The council is encouraging a variety of stall holders to get in touch that sell a range of products including crafts, food, cakes and clothing amongst other things, as well as charities who would like to promote their organisations.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “Chesterfield’s Medieval Fun Day is a real highlight on our events calendar and always draws large numbers of visitors into the town centre. Attending the fun day is your chance to step back in time and see a range of reenactors bringing the middle-ages to life. There will also be a fun fair, a variety of market stalls and activities for children provided by the museum team.

“This is a great opportunity for retailers to trade on a market stall, particularly if you are new to Chesterfield or haven’t had a stall for a while, this will be a great introduction to what it is like on an event day in the town centre.”

Organisations are also invited to get in touch using the email address below who may be interested in doing demonstrations such as willow weaving, hedgehog house building or any woodland arts and crafts.

Exciting new music and food festival to arrive in Chesterfield this summer

A new music and food festival is set to bring thousands of visitors to Chesterfield, with a number of exciting acts already confirmed.

Eat In The Park has already proven a successful event in nearby Buxton, and those in attendance at the Chesterfield event will enjoy two stages full of entertainment for all the family and food vendors selling food from around the globe.

The event, which takes place over two days on the 5th and 6th August will see world-renowned tributes to The Killers, Abba, Take That and Arctic Monkeys take to the stage, among many others.

Taking place in one of the town’s most scenic locations, Queen’s Park, Eat in the Park is part of a host of great events coming to Chesterfield this Summer.

Speaking about the event, Eat In The Park Co-Founder Jake Burnham commented: “We’re extremely excited to be bringing Eat In The Park to Chesterfield for the first time this year.

“Over the weekend, there will be food, entertainment and music to suit all tastes, providing a great experience for the whole family.

“Our event sees Main Stage and the Buxton Brewery Tent stage, both with six acts appearing on each stage each day. There will be a mixture of tribute acts and local performers to entertain those attending, as well as entertainment for children with the performers singing a range of well-known children’s songs from TV and film.”

Chesterfield to host a packed programme of events in 2023

Residents and visitors are encouraged to ‘save the date,’ as details of a packed programme of events is coming to Chesterfield are announced for 2023 – including some exciting new additions.

Designed to provide fun and unique experiences for our communities, this year’s events programme will continue to support the town centre and the wider borough by encouraging people to spend more time in Chesterfield, while enjoying the borough’s award-winning parks.

Among the new Chesterfield events in 2023 is Eat in the Park – a two-day live music event hosted in Queen’s Park this summer. The event, which will include two stages full of entertainment for all the family and food vendors selling food from around the globe, will take place on 5 and 6 August 2023, with tickets on sale now.

There will be two stages, the main stage and the Buxton Brewery Tent stage, both with six acts appearing on each stage each day. There will be a mixture of tribute acts and local performers to entertain those attending, as well as entertainment for children with the performers singing a range of well-known children’s songs from TV and film.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “Chesterfield is set to be a hive of activity this year, with a fantastic range of entertainment happening in and around the town centre, and in our award-winning parks.

“We’re delighted to welcome the Eat in the Park event as an exciting new addition to this year’s calendar. This took place in Buxton for the first time last year and was very successful, with just under 5,000 people attending the event each day – and we’re sure it will be just as popular in Chesterfield this summer.”

One of the Eat in the Park event organisers Jake Burnham explained: “We are extremely excited to bring Eat in the Park to Queen’s Park in Chesterfield – it’s a great town to hold the second event in and we can’t wait until August.”

The Chesterfield Food and Drink Festival is taking place on 22 and 23 July and will include a variety of food retailers, as well as a drinks marquee. Children at the event will also be able to enjoy the Bubble Magicians and other entertainment. There will also be music at the event from a few local bands too.

Councillor Kate Sarvent continued: “The Chesterfield Food and Drink Festival is a new edition to the event calendar too, this will take place in Queen’s Park in July and is free to enter.”

Now a firm favourite on the calendar, the popular Chesterfield Pride event will take centre stage at Stand Road Park on 23 July – with live music and acts throughout the day. The event is now recognised as the region’s biggest LGBTQ celebration.

Chesterfield Borough Council’s events programme is part of the Love Chesterfield campaign – launched in partnership with Destination Chesterfield to celebrate everything that’s great about the town, while supporting the trading ambitions of local retail, hospitality and leisure businesses.

Councillor Sarvent added: “As well as some new additions to our line up we’re also planning for the return of some of people’s favourite local events – including the Medieval Fun Day and the 1940s Market. It’s all about bringing Chesterfield to life, creating opportunities for people to make lasting memories, and to come out and show their support for our amazing local businesses.”

Chesterfield Festival of Cricket – 11 June – 18 June

The Chesterfield Festival of Cricket, in association with Chesterfield Borough Council, returns to Queen’s Park this June. The event promises to be the biggest ever festival at the park with Derbyshire facing Yorkshire in the County Championship, starting on Sunday 11 June, before the Falcons take on the Vikings in Vitality Blast action on Sunday 18 June. Crowds are expected to flock to Chesterfield to attend the 1940s market, a great event for all vintage fans. The event is taking place on 2 November, from 10am to 3.30pm to tie in with Chesterfield’s much-loved Flea Market.

Fireworks – Friday 3 November

Chesterfield Borough Council’s annual fireworks extravaganza is due to take place on 3 November and will be an event for the whole family to enjoy. Taking place at Stand Road Recreation Ground, Whittington Moor there will be a range of entertainment on the main stage – as well as the popular fireworks display.

Chesterfield Market and Christmas Lights Switch On – Sunday 19 November

Looking forward to Christmas 2023, the festive Christmas lights switch on is taking place on 19 November from 12 noon to 6pm and will be a great free afternoon out for all the family.

Peak District Highland Games recognised with national award

A major event in North Derbyshire, which attracts thousands of visitors each year has scooped a prestigious national award. The Peak District Highland Games, hosted by Matlock Farm Park and Man Beast Strongman Events won the ‘Best Event ‘ prize at the 2023 National Farm Attractions Network awards.

The coveted ceremony shines a light on farm parks all over the country who have membership with the highly-regarded organisation.

Lotty Hawkins, Assistant Manager at Matlock Farm Park commented: Matlock Farm Park is just thrilled to win the Best Event award from NFAN, with such strong competition from the best farm parks in the land.

“There’s such a large amount of preparation in the build up to the day, compared to other events we host, for instance setting up extra catering and stalls, grandstand seating, organising sponsors, promotion including our big social media prize giveaway campaign and more, but it is entirely worth it because it is such a special and unique event.

“Not only is it the farm park’s flagship event, but it’s a key Summer event for the region, gaining more of a following each year. Our team work so hard on the day, but they really enjoy the camaraderie of it all!

“It’s all with thanks of course to the super Man Beast organisers and athletes with their planning and delivery. Each year the strong men and women blow us and the crowd away by going the extra mile with all their might in events such as the Eight Tonne Tractor Pull, Tossing of the Caber and Peak Dinnie Stone Challenge. The children spectators in particular feel so inspired watching the athletes do their very best and of course, they love having photos taken with these real life ‘superheroes’.

Chesterfield Pride shortlisted for national award

The annual Chesterfield Pride Festival has been recognised amongst the best grassroots LGBTQ+ events across the UK.

The celebration, which takes place every year in Stand Road Park has been nominated for “Grassroots Pride of the Year Award” at the 2023 Pride Awards, hosted by LGBTQ+ radio station Gaydio.

To make it into the shortlist of finalists, Chesterfield Pride was nominated by the public, before being judged by an independent community panel, with members working across a variety of sectors both publicly and privately.

Chesterfield Pride is one of the biggest and best attended Pride events in the region, with thousands of people attending each year.

Dan Walker, organiser of Chesterfield Pride commented: “We are thrilled to be nominated for this award. Grassroot Pride events are vital for our communities and we really proud of the event we have in Chesterfield.

“Chesterfield Pride has grown year on year and 2022 saw our largest event yet. We are passionate about creating an event that is open to all areas of our community and always look to how we can improve going forward. Thank you once again to all those that took the time to nominate us for this award.”

The awards ceremony will take place on Friday, 10th February 2023 at the Hilton Manchester Deansgate. The evening will bring people from across the LGBTQ+ community together to recognize the extraordinary efforts to bring Pride to all corners of the UK across ten categories.

Chesterfield Pride is set to return on Sunday 23rd July 2023 for another packed day of entertainment. The Main Stage will have a variety of well known artists performing, including chart topping stars and faces from stage and screen. Meanwhile the Cabaret Stage will see some of the best of unsigned talent, fabulous Drag Queens and comedy performers.

Derbyshire to return to Queen’s Park in 2023 for the Chesterfield Festival of Cricket

The fixture list has been confirmed ahead of the 2023 County Cricket season, with Derbyshire set to return to Queen’s Park in Chesterfield to do battle with local rivals Yorkshire.

Derbyshire will be beginning their campaign at home to Worcestershire in the LV= County Championship, starting on Thursday 6 April.

Mickey Arthur’s side will be looking to make a strong start to the red ball season, with two games on the road in April, before Derbyshire host Leicestershire and Gloucestershire in an opening block of five-successive first-class fixtures.

The Chesterfield Festival of Cricket returns in June, and promises to be the biggest ever, with Derbyshire facing Yorkshire in the County Championship, starting on Sunday 11 June, before the Falcons take on the Vikings in Vitality Blast action on Sunday 18 June, meaning five huge days of action at Queen’s Park.

Last season’s action in Chesterfield saw Derbyshire beat Middlesex by six wickets in the County Championship, and the Falcons securing a six-wicket win over Yorkshire in the T20 match, which was played in front of a sellout crowd.

The blockbuster clashes are also back in Derby next summer, with five Vitality Blast fixtures set to take place at The Incora County Ground, headlined by the East Midlands Derby against Notts Outlaws on Friday 9 June.

The Vitality Blast will kick off with the historic Blast Off at Edgbaston on Saturday 20 May, where the Falcons will take on Lancashire Lightning in front of a bumper crowd on the biggest stage.

On Monday 29 May, a Bank Holiday, The Incora County Ground will play host to a special double-header, as The Blaze take on Southern Vipers in the Charlotte Edwards Cup, before Derbyshire Falcons take on Northants Steelbacks in the Vitality Blast under the floodlights.

In total, Derbyshire’s 2023 schedule includes 39 days of home cricket, while Members can also enjoy free access to England fixtures hosted at Derby, meaning Membership remains the best-value way to follow Derbyshire in 2023.

Peak District Highland Games to return this August

Some of the nation’s strongest men and women are coming to our region next month, to battle it out in the bid to be The Peak District Highland Games Champion 2022.

The flagship show, now in its seventh year, takes place at Matlock Farm Park on Sunday 28 August. It features athletes participating in six demanding strength events including the Tossing of the Caber, Eight Tonne Tractor Pull and Peak District Dinnie Stone Challenge. Beginning with a parade of the athletes accompanied by a Scottish Piper Band, the day sees an expert MC provide exciting commentary to enthuse the crowd, with the opportunity for spectators to even take part in a Tug of War.

Lotty Hawkins, Assistant manager of Matlock Farm Park said: “We’re delighted to be hosting this fantastic event once again. It’s such a favourite for so many people, whatever the age. It’s a real spectacle and with so much else going on in the park, there’s something for everyone.”

The day also features a range of food, market and craft stalls with a Bradfield Brewery beer tent and Franklin & Sons gin garden for Summer refreshments. There is an interactive exotic animal encounter, along with much of the usual fun of the farm park, including sheep racing, small animal handling and playtime fun with their new Enchanted Hamlet and Jumping Pillow.

The 2021 Games saw the introduction of Strongwomen at the event, who were warmly received by the crowd. Multiple Guinness World Record Holder Nicky Walters and teenage sensation Millie Thornton took on a mighty Tractor Pull and Caber Toss, but it was arguably Chloe Brennan who stole the show lifting the legendary Peak District Dinnie Stones. This year will see the addition of Emma Wilson, Kay Gallacher and Michaela Moore.

Manbeast Events director Andy Picken said: “There is growing diversity in strength sports and women are demonstrating great dedication to training and some awesome displays of strength.”

He continued: “The female and male athletes are really excited about this year’s Peak District Highland Games, with some amazing competitors lined up. In 2021, Dave Thornton beat twice PDHG Champion Scott Mark Litchfield and it will be interesting to see if one of these can take the title again.

With the introduction of some new athletes, notably 6 feet 7 inches tall young strongman Terry Harrison from Lincoln, it will be fascinating to see how the new ones fair against the experienced and established field of athletes.”
