Commissioner’s £100k grant scheme to help communities get tough on antisocial behaviour

Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner Angelique Foster has unveiled details of a new £100k grant scheme designed to enable voluntary and community groups to tackle antisocial behaviour.

The Commissioner is determined to respond to the neighbourhood issues that cause misery to local people and has committed £100k from her budget to the launch of an Antisocial Behaviour Prevention Grant.

The funding – available in grants of up to £5k – launched during Antisocial Behaviour Awareness Week in support of projects aiming to prevent problems developing in the first place as well as those that help to reassure residents and make them feel safer.

It will also be used to help the Commissioner respond to immediate antisocial behaviour issues identified by the Police and Community Safety Partnerships and develop new grassroots community groups to bring local people together.

The funding is one of two schemes being launched by the Commissioner in 2021-22 totalling £200k. The second scheme, due to be unveiled in the next six months, will support projects that aim to improve road safety.

Commissioner Angelique Foster said: “Antisocial behaviour has a serious impact on mental wellbeing and health and often leaves victims fearful and anxious.

“Our communities in Derbyshire deserve this issue to be treated seriously and for every resource and effort to be spent on addressing persistent problems.

“I am keen to support projects which not only alleviate problems now but also prevent them from happening in the first place, which is better for those affected by antisocial behaviour and reduces the demand for the police and partners.

“Our community safety partners work hard to make life better for local people and I want to support their efforts by funding schemes that complement and enhance their work. My team will work closely with partners to ensure the grants we distribute benefit the work already underway and maximise the impact and value of this funding for the public.”

Calls in relation to antisocial behaviour have increased by almost 70% in the past year during the health crisis. This is also reflected in cases being managed by Derbyshire Victim’s Services.

Antisocial Behaviour can affect individuals and communities and includes noise nuisance, neighbour disputes, threatening behaviour, litter/dog fouling, criminal damage/vandalism/graffiti and drug or alcohol misuse and fly-tipping.

The Commissioner aims to fund a variety of projects from sports and creative arts diversionary programmes through to media-themed intervention including radio/film making and is particularly keen to support applications from organisations that offer some level of matched funding.

Other projects could include drop-ins for young people, CCTV, community clean-ups, intergenerational schemes, mentoring projects, education initiatives and parental support programmes.

In addition to voluntary groups, the Commissioner would welcome applications from both Parish and Town Councils.

Applicants will need to provide evidence of a problem and propose community-based solutions including an emphasis on partnership working.

Law Firm Expands With New Appointments In Dispute Resolution

BRM Solicitors, who have offices in Chesterfield, are expanding with two new appointments to its Dispute Resolution Department.

Kate Fowler, joins BRM as an Associate from Sheffield law firm Lupton Fawcett specialising in property litigation and bringing over eight years of legal expertise to BRM’s Dispute Resolution Team.

Ellie Davies joins as a trainee solicitor and upon qualification, will specialise in litigation and dispute resolution.

The latest recruits complement the recent appointments of Executive Director and Department Head, Rob Cooke, whose extensive experience spans areas including Commercial and Property Litigation.

Director Giles Searby’s expertise in the manufacturing and technology sectors and experience with international trade issues were a valuable addition to BRM’s Dispute Resolution Department in 2020.

End of self-isolation rules for double-vaccinated people will finally give businesses much-needed certainty

From the 16th August, people who are double jabbed or aged under 18 will no longer be legally required to self-isolate if they are identified as a close contact of a positive COVID-19 case. The change is part of step 4 of the government’s COVID-19 roadmap. With 75% of people having received both doses of the vaccine, the majority of adults will no longer need to self-isolate if they are contacts.

double-jabbed individuals and under 18s who are identified as close contacts by NHS Test and Trace will be advised to take a PCR test as soon as possible to check if they have the virus and for variants of concern. People can order a PCR home test online or by calling 119, or going to a test site.

East Midlands Chamber (Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire) chief executive Scott Knowles said: “The changes to the test and trace system are another important step towards normality and will finally give businesses the much-needed certainty they need if they are to fully recover.

“While the removal of almost all restrictions on businesses last month was a landmark moment in our battle against coronavirus, the so-called ‘pingdemic’ caused huge issues for companies that found themselves under-staffed and receiving cancellations from customers.

“The desensitisation of the NHS Covid-19 app and exempting some key workers from the self-isolation requirements helped some businesses but many industries that weren’t included have had to struggle on.

“Removing the requirement for double-vaccinated people to self-isolate means we are now arriving at a crucial point in the pandemic as we move from state-mandated rules to personal responsibility, which is what businesses have wanted to see for a long time.

“As our latest Quarterly Economic Survey for Q2 2021 demonstrated, confidence in the East Midlands has bounced back strongly and it’s clear businesses now want to grasp the opportunity of a fully open and functioning economy with both hands to make up for lost time.”

Health and Social Care Secretary Sajid Javid said:  “Asking the close contacts of people with COVID-19 to self-isolate has played a critical role in helping us get this virus under control, and millions of people across the UK have made enormous sacrifices by doing this. Every single one of these sacrifices has helped us protect the NHS and save lives.”

“Getting 2 doses of a vaccine has tipped the odds in our favour and allowed us to safely reclaim our lost freedoms, and from Monday we can take another huge step back towards our normal lives by removing self-isolation requirements for double-jabbed people who are contacts of people with COVID-19. Double-jabbed people who test positive will still need to self-isolate.”

“Vaccines are what will bring this pandemic to an end – the wall of defence provided by the roll-out is allowing us to get even closer to normal life. If you haven’t already, please make sure you come forward for your jab at the earliest opportunity.”

Top community contributors recognised in brand-new awards

Three of Chesterfield’s top community contributors have been named in the brand-new 2021 Love Chesterfield Awards organised by Destination Chesterfield in association with Entire FM – Complete Facilities Management.

CBE+ Group, Peak Pharmacy and The Volunteer Centre Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire have all been shortlisted for the Community Contribution Award. The new category celebrates the kindness shown by organisations and their employees to local people and community projects in 2020 and 2021.

CBE+ Group has been involved in a number of activities, supporting the local community, from producing thousands of vital ventilator parts in a matter of weeks to sponsoring local football club New Tupton Ivanhoes Under 13’s team and Tupton RUFC.

Marie Cooper, CEO of CBE+ Group explained: “Community contribution is something we see as non-optional at CBE+. Our business and our people play a major part in the Chesterfield community. We therefore have an active engagement in supporting the local area and ensure its future growth and success are part of our mission.

Supporting patients throughout the entirety of the pandemic, the team at Peak Pharmacy has continued to put their customers in front of themselves through extremely challenging conditions. Establishing a Covid-19 clinic in Chesterfield (at Casa Hotel) as well as at one of its pharmacies in Clay Cross, they’ve administered more than 30,000 vaccinations to the people of Chesterfield.

New Free ‘Skills Bootcamps’ announced

Following a successful pilot, the D2N2 LEP has been announced as one of several organisations across the country to deliver the expanded national Skills Bootcamp programme.

Skills Bootcamps are flexible courses of up to 16 weeks, giving people the opportunity to build up sector-specific skills and fast-track to an interview with a local employer.

The programme has been developed by the Government as part of the Lifetime Skills Guarantee and Plan for Jobs, in partnership with employers, providers and local authorities, to help people develop the skills that are in demand and get a better job.

As the D2N2 LEP steps up its drive to help employers and the local economy the new courses will be helping even more adults gain digital skills. Digital skills are not just for digital jobs. These skills are becoming increasingly essential across a vast array of jobs and sectors in the modern workforce – 82% of all job openings online request digital skills.

Working with our delivery partners and the Greater Lincolnshire LEP, the new courses will include:

  • Coding and software development
  • IT, Networking and Infrastructure
  • Cyber and system security
  • Digital Marketing

Speaking about the new announcement, Elizabeth Fagan, Chair of the D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership, said:

“Training in the skills of the future and the skills we know our employers need is critical to our region’s economic recovery and our long-term growth.

“The Skills Bootcamps will complement the many local schemes that are already up and running across our region. I would urge prospective learners and employers to see what training and course options are available.”

The free courses are open to anyone aged 19 or over and are employed, self-employed, have recently become unemployed or are returning to work after a break.

Chesterfield Escape Rooms helps unemployed young people get on career ladder

Robbing banks and investigating paranormal activity is the name of the game at a new Chesterfield venue – which has used the Kickstart scheme to bolster its team.

Chesterfield Escape Rooms, which opened in May, has used the Government-backed employment programme – aimed at 16 to 24-year-olds on Universal Credit or at risk of long-term unemployment – to hire six games masters among its 16 employees.

It applied for funding to create the initial six-month placements via East Midlands Chamber, which is a Kickstart gateway organisation and has worked with Chesterfield Borough Council to engage businesses about the scheme’s benefits.

Nick Hogan, who owns the escape room business, said he had initially considered employing people on zero-hour contracts due to the unknown nature of bookings, but felt this wouldn’t help to build a workforce with a “sense of belonging”.

“When Kickstart came along, it allowed me to recruit and be selective in the recruitment process,” he said.

“In working with these six people, it’s reminded me that everyone deserves a chance. The younger generation is tomorrow’s workforce and unless we give the opportunities to succeed, our businesses won’t survive.”

How Kickstart scheme has offered opportunities to young people in Chesterfield

One of the Kickstart employees is James Bryan, from Chesterfield, whose role involves customer service, sales and running the games, which require players to solve a series of puzzles within a set time to unlock the room.

The 21-year-old, who was previously a freelance actor, writer and radio editor, said: “I can already feel I’ve gained more confidence in speaking to customers and leading games.

“The scheme is wonderful for our generation in these strange times, and it’s most definitely helped me.”

Meanwhile, Laura Maskrey, from Matlock, joined Brampton-based digital marketing agency Brighter Directions as a social media executive.

The 25-year-old English language and linguistics graduate had previously been placed on furlough and then made redundant from her job in marketing and communications before she began applying for Kickstart vacancies.

She said: “It has taken me longer than expected to settle due to not having a solid routine and job role for nearly a year, but I love the role and my team has been so welcoming and patient with me.

“My placement will have a positive impact on my job prospects as I have learned a huge amount in short space of time, which has improved my confidence and mental health dramatically from being unemployed.”

Kickstart job placements still available in Derbyshire and wider East Midlands

The Department for Work and Pensions funds 100% of the age-relevant National Minimum Wage, national insurance and pensions contributions for 25 hours a week over a six-month period.

Employers can choose to top up this wage and are also eligible for a £1,500 Government grant for training people on a Kickstart placement.

Once applications are accepted, young people are referred into the roles via a Jobcentre Plus work coach.

East Midlands Chamber has secured more than 3,000 placements among almost 800 businesses located in Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and other locations. Just under 900 of these roles have been filled, with 2,000 vacancies live.

Deputy chief executive and Kickstart lead Diane Beresford said: “We’re so proud to have played a key role in giving young people a chance they may not otherwise have had. After spending many months working with employers on their applications, it’s incredibly exciting and rewarding to see the fruits of our labour as people now start their jobs.

“Businesses taking part are playing a vital role in their communities by supporting and preparing our future workforce, while they also benefit from a relatively risk-free opportunity to trial new roles that could lead to future growth.”

East Midlands Chamber has worked with local authorities including Chesterfield Borough Council to hold information sessions for businesses in the area.

It’s just the latest collaboration between the organisations after the Chamber also delivered council-funded projects including the Chesterfield Digital High Street programme and the Business Crime Reduction Partnership – an existing scheme run alongside the Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner that has now been made available free of charge for up to 2,000 Chesterfield businesses.

The council’s deputy leader Councillor Amanda Serjeant added: “Kickstart offers a fantastic opportunity for young people to increase their experience in the workplace, which will help them develop new skills and build a career.

“I’d encourage any young person currently looking for work to apply for these opportunities because you never know where it may lead.”

The deadline for employers to apply for the Kickstart scheme is fast approaching as the roles must begin by 31 December this year, with funding provided until 30 June 2022.

Chesterfield’s sustainable businesses recognised with new award

Three of Chesterfield’s top sustainable businesses have been named in the brand-new 2021 Love Chesterfield Awards organised by Destination Chesterfield in association with Entire FM – Complete Facilities Management.

Astra Designs, Designer Contracts and Superior Wellness have been shortlisted for the Sustainability Award for demonstrating a commitment to sustainable business practices. This is the first time sustainability has been recognised in Destination Chesterfield’s annual awards.

Sponsored by Chesterfield Borough Council, the award is designed to highlight the importance of businesses working towards becoming carbon neutral.  The three finalists commended not only measure and report their progress, but have also demonstrated a commitment to sustainability during the past five years.

Chesterfield Borough Council declared a climate emergency in 2019 and has since committed to the Council and borough becoming carbon neutral by 2030 and 2050 respectively.

Donna Swift-Moore, Owner and Designer at Astra Designs commented: “When I found out that we were shortlisted for this award, you would’ve thought I had won the lottery! Our whole business model is based around sustainability and reducing fast fashion pollution, with the company using 80% recycled fabrics. We just think it’s so important and, with the introduction of this new award, I think it says a lot about Chesterfield.”

Countdown begins to Chesterfield Pride

The countdown is on for the return of Chesterfield Pride on Sunday 22nd August at Stand Road Park.

Chesterfield Pride is one of the biggest and best attended Pride events in the region with 2019 seeing over 6000 attending the LGBTQ+ celebration.

This year’s event will see some amazing talent spread over 2 stages.

The Chesterfield Borough Council Main stage will welcome acts including Stooshe, Big Brovaz, Sonia, Booty Luv, Tina Cousins and Black Lace.

The Cabaret Stage will be headlined by Ru Paul’s Drag Race star Joe Black, who will be joined by amazing drag artists KY Kelly, Jackie Love and Donna Trump and a number of local artists including Rachael Webster, KYOTO and Andrew Warner.

There will also be fairground rides and a variety of stalls hosted by local organisations as part of the day’s line-up.

Businesses can play key role in climate action while reaping commercial rewards

Commenting on the sixth assessment report by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which was published on the 9 August, East Midlands Chamber has identified the important role businesses need to play in the sustainability agenda. It has also recognised that there are strong commercial benefits to adopting a greener and cleaner approach to doing business.

Chamber director of resources Lucy Robinson said: The report by the IPCC is a sobering reminder of how each and every one of us has a role to play in the fight against climate change, and this is particularly true of businesses – no matter what their shape, size or location.

“The Chamber launched the Sustainable East Midlands campaign last year to help more organisations in our region embrace the sustainability agenda after recognising how businesses account for 18% of the UK’s emissions.

“The good news is we are moving in the right direction. Our latest research, conducted in partnership with the University of Derby, shows the proportion of East Midlands companies that derive turnover from supplying pro-environmental goods or services has increased from 16% in 2015 to 37% in 2021. Even in the past year, we’ve seen a 7% rise in the number of firms that have integrated clean growth into their business strategies – now at 36% of businesses.

“We still need to do more though, particularly in supporting SMEs to adopt a sustainable growth strategy. While the latest IPCC research illustrates how reducing our carbon emissions is clearly the right thing to do if we are to avoid the worst effects of climate change, there are also strong commercial benefits to adopting a greener and cleaner approach to doing business.

“Just like the automotive industry is now beginning to shift from petrol and diesel to building electric cars because it has identified the direction of the market, engaging with sustainability will make our business community more competitive in the long term – whether it’s in securing public sector contracts, cutting operating costs or offering innovations that help solve climate challenges.

“It will ultimately also make the East Midlands more competitive as a region, but it also plays into our strengths as we have all the pieces of the sustainability jigsaw – the high energy users in manufacturing, the energy producers in our coal field heritage, and new hi-tech businesses coming out of our world-leading universities.”

Campaign launched to encourage staff and bosses to open up about their mental health

A new campaign created by employers for employers to boost mental health and productivity by encouraging open conversations in workplaces in the East Midlands has been officially launched.

“Bridge the Gap, Start a Chat” has been launched by the Mental Health and Productivity Pilot (MHPP) to give businesses and organisations of all sizes and sectors the help they need to encourage staff and bosses alike to open up about their mental health.

The campaign was created by MHPP with input from a group of ten Midlands employers from a variety of sectors and geographies, as well as employees with lived experience of mental health problems.

It’s one of a number of ways that MHPP, a collaboration of Midlands universities, local authorities and mental health charity Mind, is supporting employers to understand the important link between staff mental health and wellbeing, and business productivity.

Research has shown that mental health is one of the biggest causes of sickness absences in Midlands businesses – and the impact of COVID-19 has recently become another key factor in poor mental health at work.

As well as tips and advice on starting conversations, for line managers and employees, employers can access a free ‘resource pack’ on the MHPP website, which gives resources and guidance to help them roll out a campaign to encourage conversations about mental health in their own organisation.

The pack includes campaign planning guidance, downloadable resources to support both employees and line managers to start conversations and awareness-raising promotional materials such as posters, social media assets, video call backgrounds and email signature banners – all of which employers can use to suit the needs of the business.

Manjinder Singh, Head of Consulting at infrastructure consulting firm AECOM, which has offices in Chesterfield and contributed to the campaign, felt it was a great way for businesses to take the first step into making a huge difference to staff mental health and productivity.

He added: “As a business we began to place a spotlight on the topic of mental health some years ago, recognising the importance of wellbeing in creating a culture of care that enables our people to bring their best selves to work.

“Through Midlands Engine’s Mental Health & Productivity Pilot (MHPP) we can share lessons learned from our journey with other organisations, adding diversity of thought to discussions on the role of employers in supporting mental health.

“In the current global climate, it is more important than ever that people know it is OK to talk openly about mental health in the workplace. We hope that MHPP will help remove some of the stigma surrounding this topic for businesses and their employees in the region.”

And Sinziana Irimia, who was diagnosed with postpartum depression while working for her current employer, thought Bridge the Gap, Start a Chat was key to supporting employees to feel comfortable with talking about their mental health at work.

She said: “No one should feel they have to hide mental health conditions at work. For so many years it has been seen as a weakness, but that’s far from the truth.

“I got involved with this campaign because I wanted to help change the mindset of workplaces when it comes to mental health. The pressure I felt around not delivering in my job because of my mental health condition was huge.

“On more vulnerable days, my anxiety kicked in and I feared that I might become jobless. But in reality, I love my job and I am good at it. People with mental health problems can and do fulfil our jobs to a high standard every day.

“It is essential to be able to talk openly with your colleagues about mental health. Just knowing that someone else has been in your shoes and they are still standing and can get on with their lives – that’s important.

“This campaign will get employees feeling more confident to open up to talking about mental health in the workplace, which will make a massive difference to people’s wellbeing with a direct impact on their performance at work.”

MHPP is funded by Midlands Engine and is led by Coventry University in partnership with the University of Warwick, the West Midlands Combined Authority, mental health charity Mind and the universities of Birmingham, Derby, Lincoln, Loughborough and Nottingham.

Prior to the campaign launch MHPP has been helping employers across the Midlands to take steps to support and improve the mental health of their workforce, and ultimately increase productivity.

Caroline Geraghty, MHPP Project Manager at Coventry University said: “Bridge the Gap, Start a Chat is all about giving employers and employees the support and confidence to start conversations at work about mental health.  In the same way that we all have physical health, everyone has mental health too, so it’s important that people feel able to talk about mental health wherever they work.

“We know from talking to Midlands employers, that often people find it hard to talk about mental health at work.  Through ‘Bridge the Gap, Start a Chat’ we want to show employers and employees that it doesn’t need to be difficult and starting a conversation is a great place to begin.

“There’s some really good advice on the web site, and we’ve made it easy for employers run their own campaign by providing guidance and resources that can be downloaded and shared with staff.

“Ultimately, talking about mental health is the first step that employers can take to supporting staff.  MHPP also offers a range of other free support, to help organisations implement a structured approach to improving workplace mental health – and it doesn’t cost anything as our work is funded by Midlands Engine.

“We would encourage all employers to head to the MHPP website and have a look at the employers resource pack – there’s plenty in there to get started on making a big difference.

“If enough employers get on board, it will make an enormous difference to the health and wellbeing of workers across the Midlands.”

Derbyshire Building Control Partnership continues to grow

Derbyshire Building Control Partnership (DBCP) has strengthened its team across Derbyshire with a trio of brand-new appointments, as the demand for building control continues to rise in the region.

Two new fully qualified Building Control Surveyors have been welcomed to the team. This now makes DBCP the largest building control company in the East Midlands. The company has also welcomed Jade Sheppard to its technical support team.

Steve Mansfield and Andy Moran have joined DBCP as Building Control Surveyors. They bring 47 years of combined building control experience to their new roles.

In their roles, Steve and Andy will be working with builders, architects and property owners throughout the South Derbyshire region providing plan checks, site inspections and advice and support to clients and contractors for commercial and residential developments. They will also be on call for requests to assess dangerous structures.

Beginning his career as a trainee building control officer in 1987, Steve is now a full member of both industry bodies, the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Institute for Leadership and Management (ILM).

He commented: “On a day-to-day basis, I’m going to be liaising with architects, builders and homeowners for site visits and plan assessments but ultimately, my role is about ensuring public safety.”

Outside work, Steve enjoys spending time with his family and going on walking holidays whenever possible.

Andy, who is a chartered member of CIOB, Level 6 LABC Building Standards Fire Safety Specialist and Fellow of the Chartered Association of Building Engineers (UK), joins Steve in covering the South Derbyshire area.

He commented: “I’m looking forward to DBCP’s growth plans and its progressive stance within the building control sector. I enjoy getting out and speaking with all types of people through site inspections and also enjoy working closely with architects and designers with a particular interest in the fire safety side of complex buildings, so I’m just really looking forward to getting started.”

Outside work, he enjoys getting out to walk his Welsh terrier, Ferry and regularly visits his holiday home in Barmouth, Wales.

It’s a complete career change for Jade, who joins the Technical Support team at DBCP. Previously working at a world-leading learning company checking exam papers, Jade has a strong eye for detail. She is also a member of the World Championship competitors – Trailblazer Allstars Cheerleading Academy, and represents England

She commented: “With the organisational and people skills I have developed with previous employers, the building control industry and the role at DBCP allows me to bring them all together and put them into practice each day.”
