Chesterfield’s popular Walking Festival to return in May 2023

Residents and visitors being encouraged to get outdoors and enjoy what our town and wider area has to offer, as the popular Chesterfield Area Walking Festival returns for another year.

The annual festival takes place from Saturday 13 to Sunday 21 May 2023 and it includes gentle strolls, family walks and big days out for seasoned hikers. Tickets for the festival will be available to book from Monday 13 February.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “The Chesterfield Area Walking Festival is a great event that encourages you to explore the beautiful countryside locations around Chesterfield, Bolsover and North East Derbyshire. It will help you discover some hidden gems that you may not be aware of and the programme has been designed to ensure that there are walks suitable for all abilities.

“The festival is always really popular and regularly sells out. If any of the events interest you, then book your ticket as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.”

There are lots of different types of walks planned, there are walks for the family to enjoy like the Bumblebee Safari where you can find out more about these important pollinators, a Buggy Walk for parents of young children around Queen’s Park, a family friendly Wildlife Hunt and the popular Boat and Boots which includes a trip along the Chesterfield Canal.

Walks focussed on history include an exploration of Creswell Crags and Holbeck, a tour focused on the restoration of the Chesterfield Canal, a guided walk discovering the history of the Avenue Country Park, and a tour of the Chesterfield Museum stores, featuring items from the collection some of which have not been on display before.

For the more experienced hiker the festival includes a few strenuous walks like the popular 34-mile Chesterfield Round, a tour of Harewood and Longside Moors and a hike around the Big Moor Stone Circles.

Booking is essential but most walks included in the festival are free to attend, with a small fee for the rest.

Chesterfield to host a packed programme of events in 2023

Residents and visitors are encouraged to ‘save the date,’ as details of a packed programme of events is coming to Chesterfield are announced for 2023 – including some exciting new additions.

Designed to provide fun and unique experiences for our communities, this year’s events programme will continue to support the town centre and the wider borough by encouraging people to spend more time in Chesterfield, while enjoying the borough’s award-winning parks.

Among the new Chesterfield events in 2023 is Eat in the Park – a two-day live music event hosted in Queen’s Park this summer. The event, which will include two stages full of entertainment for all the family and food vendors selling food from around the globe, will take place on 5 and 6 August 2023, with tickets on sale now.

There will be two stages, the main stage and the Buxton Brewery Tent stage, both with six acts appearing on each stage each day. There will be a mixture of tribute acts and local performers to entertain those attending, as well as entertainment for children with the performers singing a range of well-known children’s songs from TV and film.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “Chesterfield is set to be a hive of activity this year, with a fantastic range of entertainment happening in and around the town centre, and in our award-winning parks.

“We’re delighted to welcome the Eat in the Park event as an exciting new addition to this year’s calendar. This took place in Buxton for the first time last year and was very successful, with just under 5,000 people attending the event each day – and we’re sure it will be just as popular in Chesterfield this summer.”

One of the Eat in the Park event organisers Jake Burnham explained: “We are extremely excited to bring Eat in the Park to Queen’s Park in Chesterfield – it’s a great town to hold the second event in and we can’t wait until August.”

The Chesterfield Food and Drink Festival is taking place on 22 and 23 July and will include a variety of food retailers, as well as a drinks marquee. Children at the event will also be able to enjoy the Bubble Magicians and other entertainment. There will also be music at the event from a few local bands too.

Councillor Kate Sarvent continued: “The Chesterfield Food and Drink Festival is a new edition to the event calendar too, this will take place in Queen’s Park in July and is free to enter.”

Now a firm favourite on the calendar, the popular Chesterfield Pride event will take centre stage at Stand Road Park on 23 July – with live music and acts throughout the day. The event is now recognised as the region’s biggest LGBTQ celebration.

Chesterfield Borough Council’s events programme is part of the Love Chesterfield campaign – launched in partnership with Destination Chesterfield to celebrate everything that’s great about the town, while supporting the trading ambitions of local retail, hospitality and leisure businesses.

Councillor Sarvent added: “As well as some new additions to our line up we’re also planning for the return of some of people’s favourite local events – including the Medieval Fun Day and the 1940s Market. It’s all about bringing Chesterfield to life, creating opportunities for people to make lasting memories, and to come out and show their support for our amazing local businesses.”

Chesterfield Festival of Cricket – 11 June – 18 June

The Chesterfield Festival of Cricket, in association with Chesterfield Borough Council, returns to Queen’s Park this June. The event promises to be the biggest ever festival at the park with Derbyshire facing Yorkshire in the County Championship, starting on Sunday 11 June, before the Falcons take on the Vikings in Vitality Blast action on Sunday 18 June. Chesterfield Food and Drink Festival 22 – 23 July from 10.30am to 4.30pm

1940s Market – Thursday 2 November

Crowds are expected to flock to Chesterfield to attend the 1940s market, a great event for all vintage fans. The event is taking place on 2 November, from 10am to 3.30pm to tie in with Chesterfield’s much-loved Flea Market.

Fireworks – Friday 3 November

Chesterfield Borough Council’s annual fireworks extravaganza is due to take place on 3 November and will be an event for the whole family to enjoy. Taking place at Stand Road Recreation Ground, Whittington Moor there will be a range of entertainment on the main stage – as well as the popular fireworks display.

Chesterfield Market and Christmas Lights Switch On – Sunday 19 November

Looking forward to Christmas 2023, the festive Christmas lights switch on is taking place on 19 November from 12 noon to 6pm and will be a great free afternoon out for all the family.

Peak District Highland Games recognised with national award

A major event in North Derbyshire, which attracts thousands of visitors each year has scooped a prestigious national award. The Peak District Highland Games, hosted by Matlock Farm Park and Man Beast Strongman Events won the ‘Best Event ‘ prize at the 2023 National Farm Attractions Network awards.

The coveted ceremony shines a light on farm parks all over the country who have membership with the highly-regarded organisation.

Lotty Hawkins, Assistant Manager at Matlock Farm Park commented: Matlock Farm Park is just thrilled to win the Best Event award from NFAN, with such strong competition from the best farm parks in the land.

“There’s such a large amount of preparation in the build up to the day, compared to other events we host, for instance setting up extra catering and stalls, grandstand seating, organising sponsors, promotion including our big social media prize giveaway campaign and more, but it is entirely worth it because it is such a special and unique event.

“Not only is it the farm park’s flagship event, but it’s a key Summer event for the region, gaining more of a following each year. Our team work so hard on the day, but they really enjoy the camaraderie of it all!

“It’s all with thanks of course to the super Man Beast organisers and athletes with their planning and delivery. Chesterfield Pride shortlisted for national award

The annual Chesterfield Pride Festival has been recognised amongst the best grassroots LGBTQ+ events across the UK.

The celebration, which takes place every year in Stand Road Park has been nominated for “Grassroots Pride of the Year Award” at the 2023 Pride Awards, hosted by LGBTQ+ radio station Gaydio.

To make it into the shortlist of finalists, Chesterfield Pride was nominated by the public, before being judged by an independent community panel, with members working across a variety of sectors both publicly and privately.

Chesterfield Pride is one of the biggest and best attended Pride events in the region, with thousands of people attending each year.

Dan Walker, organiser of Chesterfield Pride commented: “We are thrilled to be nominated for this award. Grassroot Pride events are vital for our communities and we really proud of the event we have in Chesterfield.

“Chesterfield Pride has grown year on year and 2022 saw our largest event yet. We are passionate about creating an event that is open to all areas of our community and always look to how we can improve going forward. Thank you once again to all those that took the time to nominate us for this award.”

The awards ceremony will take place on Friday, 10th February 2023 at the Hilton Manchester Deansgate. The evening will bring people from across the LGBTQ+ community together to recognize the extraordinary efforts to bring Pride to all corners of the UK across ten categories.

Chesterfield Pride is set to return on Sunday 23rd July 2023 for another packed day of entertainment. The Main Stage will have a variety of well known artists performing, including chart topping stars and faces from stage and screen. Meanwhile the Cabaret Stage will see some of the best of unsigned talent, fabulous Drag Queens and comedy performers.

Have your say on Chesterfield town centres

Chesterfield residents and local business owners are being encouraged to complete our quarterly consumer and business surveys to help us to learn more about how you / your customers use services in our town centres.

Love Chesterfield is a campaign organised by Chesterfield Borough Council in partnership with Destination Chesterfield to promote and support high streets and town centres across the borough of Chesterfield.

The quick surveys will ask you questions about your business performance and any changes you have noticed in the last three months (October – December 2022) if you are a business owner, and the consumer survey will ask you to update us on what events or venues you have attended and services you have used recently in our communities.

Please spend a few minutes to complete the relevant questionnaire. The results will allow us to monitor the performance of the town, the success of marketing campaigns and business support and will help to shape future activity to support high street businesses across the borough.

The survey will close on 20th February 2023.

At the end of the consumer questionnaire, there is an opportunity to win two tickets to see Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story at the Winding Wheel.

Derbyshire to return to Queen’s Park in 2023 for the Chesterfield Festival of Cricket

The fixture list has been confirmed ahead of the 2023 County Cricket season, with Derbyshire set to return to Queen’s Park in Chesterfield to do battle with local rivals Yorkshire.

Derbyshire will be beginning their campaign at home to Worcestershire in the LV= County Championship, starting on Thursday 6 April.

Mickey Arthur’s side will be looking to make a strong start to the red ball season, with two games on the road in April, before Derbyshire host Leicestershire and Gloucestershire in an opening block of five-successive first-class fixtures.

The Chesterfield Festival of Cricket returns in June, and promises to be the biggest ever, with Derbyshire facing Yorkshire in the County Championship, starting on Sunday 11 June, before the Falcons take on the Vikings in Vitality Blast action on Sunday 18 June, meaning five huge days of action at Queen’s Park.

Last season’s action in Chesterfield saw Derbyshire beat Middlesex by six wickets in the County Championship, and the Falcons securing a six-wicket win over Yorkshire in the T20 match, which was played in front of a sellout crowd.

The blockbuster clashes are also back in Derby next summer, with five Vitality Blast fixtures set to take place at The Incora County Ground, headlined by the East Midlands Derby against Notts Outlaws on Friday 9 June.

The Vitality Blast will kick off with the historic Blast Off at Edgbaston on Saturday 20 May, where the Falcons will take on Lancashire Lightning in front of a bumper crowd on the biggest stage.

On Monday 29 May, a Bank Holiday, The Incora County Ground will play host to a special double-header, as The Blaze take on Southern Vipers in the Charlotte Edwards Cup, before Derbyshire Falcons take on Northants Steelbacks in the Vitality Blast under the floodlights.

In total, Derbyshire’s 2023 schedule includes 39 days of home cricket, while Members can also enjoy free access to England fixtures hosted at Derby, meaning Membership remains the best-value way to follow Derbyshire in 2023.

Less Than Zero Barbers to support Chesterfield parents with free ‘back to school’ haircuts

Chesterfield barbers, Less Than Zero based on Soresby Street has been busy providing support for residents across Chesterfield, with the team giving free haircuts to boys ahead of the new school year.

The barbers, which has won multiple awards, is working to engage the local community and give back to families who are feeling the pinch due to the current cost-of-living. The business is working alongside local charity, Gussie’s Kitchen to book appointments for those in need.

School-age boys in the town are able to book a free appointment at the barbershop on Soresby Street, on a Thursday and Friday morning between 9am – 10am ahead of the school year.

Each appointment will last 30 minutes and can accommodate 12 people per session. While benefitting local families, the initiative will also enable apprentices at Less Than Zero to gain vital experience and training.

Discover more about Chesterfield’s Heritage at upcoming events

Residents and visitors can learn more about local history as Chesterfield Borough Council is set to host two events as part of the national Heritage Open Days.

On Saturday 10 September there is the opportunity to explore the Chesterfield Museum collection, and then the following weekend on Sunday 18 September meet a Sir Joseph Paxton reenactor at Revolution House.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “With the closure of Chesterfield Museum, for the multi-million-pound renovation of Stephenson Memorial Hall, it is important that we offer excellent opportunities for everyone to learn more about our local history. It’s great to be taking part in the national Heritage Open Days and I hope lots of people will take on this unique opportunity to learn more about local history.”

On Saturday 10 September from 11am, people can explore one of Chesterfield Museum’s off-site stores which houses some of the larger items from the Museum’s collection that are not normally on display.

The Museum’s Collections Officer will act as a guide and explain how the museum looks after the items within its care and the challenges involved.

Booking is not required and people can simply arrive at Unit 1 Calow Brook Drive, Off Calow Lane for 11am to take part.

The following weekend on Sunday 18 September between 11am and 4pm, a Sir Joseph Paxton reenactor will be appearing at Revolution House in Old Whittington. Booking for this event is not required.

Visitors will be able to learn more about his life as a gardener, architect and engineer as well as his connection to Chatsworth. There will also be a hands-on activity for children to plant their own seeds.

Barlow Carnival to take place this weekend

The popular Barlow Carnival returns this weekend, and hundreds of people are expected to visit the picturesque North Derbyshire village for the event.

The celebrations get underway on Wednesday as the village’s three Well Dressings are opened to the public with a blessing taking place at St Lawrence Church from 6.30pm, followed by a procession through the village.

St Lawrence Church will also be open from Wednesday with their popular flower festival this year on theme of ‘Name That Tune’ with cream teas available. A funfair will be open from the Wednesday evening through until Sunday opposite the Village Hall.

The fun continues throughout the week including the Open Air Cinema on Friday 19 August, with Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again being screened.

The main Carnival Day take place on Saturday, 20th August with the Carnival Parade setting off from Springfield Road at 2pm, with road closures around the village. The parade includes a display of decorated floats and fancy dress followed by celebrations on the Carnival Field.

Entertainment on the Carnival Field includes Mighty Smith (Strong Man), Barlow Red Barrows, Birds of Prey, Derby Ambassadors Show Band, live music, vintage cars and much much more.

There will be plenty of stalls including food outlets, local independent crafters and a tombola on offer too.

On Saturday evening the Carnival Field hosts Rock the Carnival with live music from local bands Lunarca, Pearl Heart and Escape Plan.

The fun continues on the Sunday with Chesterfield Guide Dogs presenting their popular dog show from 11am (registration from 10am) accompanied by children’s entertainment and competitions, Heeley City Farm followed by Tug of War competition and inflatable challenge from 1pm.

Terry Allison, Barlow Carnival Committee Chairman said: “We’re so excited to be hosting Barlow Carnival this weekend. Unfortunately we couldn’t hold the event in 2020, we returned in 2021 and the event is going from strength to strength.

“It’s the highlight of the year for many local people, with hundreds of people flocking to the village to join the celebrations we’re getting set for a fantastic weekend. There is something for all the family to enjoy.”

New paddlesports hire business has launched on the Chesterfield Canal

A new paddlesports hire business has launched on the Chesterfield Canal.

Equipment will be available for hire from Hollingwood Hub and will initially be open on Saturdays from the 13th August 2022.

The centre will cater for people experienced in watersports or those who would just like to give something a go.

A  range of equipment is available from stand up paddleboards, single and double kayaks and a Canadian canoe.

Explore the Chesterfield Canal for 1, 3 or 6 hours.

Rob Auton from Chesterfield Canal Trust said “We are delighted that this exciting new venture is finally able to start. Kayaking and especially paddleboarding on the canal have increased greatly in popularity in the last two years. Experienced watersports enthusiasts or complete novices are welcome.”

The Chesterfield Canal Trust was recently awarded £5.3 million from the Staveley Town Deal Fund.  These works will extend the canal and improve facilities for users.

The canal extension will run for two miles from Hartington Harbour onto the Staveley Puddlebank which runs across the Doe Lea valley. Completing the works will take 3 years.

There will be two miles of multi-use towpath to Renishall. There will be a new lock and two new bridges, and a siphon pipe to take the water from Staveley Waterside (the new name for Staveley Town Basin) to the new canal section and full designs will be prepared for further work.

Staveley Waterside is the first phase of a mixed-use development centred around the Staveley Canal Basin. This will include the creation of an access road, pontoons to create moorings, a café and flexible office and workshop space for small businesses.

Barrow Hill Roundhouse confirms details of 150th Anniversary Gala

Celebrating 152 years of railway history for the iconic Midland Railway roundhouse and the wider railway industry it supports to this day. The three-day event is taking place from Friday 26th August to Sunday 28th August 2022.

Barrow Hill Roundhouse is delighted to release further details of its 150+2 Celebration Gala.  Tickets are now on sale for this great occasion, which will recreate the British Railways-era Open Days which took place at the Roundhouse in the 1970s and early 1980s.

Highlights include:

GWR 1500 class 0-6-0PT shunting engine 1501, the sole survivor of its class, in steam and working the Barrow Hill shuttle trains from Roundhouse Halt up the Springwell branch line.  Our thanks go to the 1501 Pannier Tank Association and Severn Valley Railway for providing the engine for the Gala.

Midland Railway 158A Class 156 2-4-0, from the National Collection, will be on display alongside Midland Railway Compound 1000, the first time for many years that the two Midland Railway locomotives will have been seen together.  Barrow Hill Engine Shed Society, the charity responsible for the Roundhouse, has signed a three-year loan agreement with the National Railway Museum to enable the locomotive to go on static public display here. The locomotive was previously at Locomotion in Shildon, where it had been receiving conservation work and asbestos remediation. It has strong historic ties to the region; it was designed by William Kirtley and built at Derby in 1866 before being withdrawn in 1947.

GB Railfreight’s Class 69 69003 will be named “The Railway Observer” by the Railway Correspondence & Travel Society during the Gala weekend.

The Roundhouse’s Class 02 D2868 and Class 07 07012, owned by Mr James Williams and Mr Victor Korzienwicz, will operate brake van rides in the Roundhouse yard.  The Roundhouse’s Class 03 03066 will support GWR 1501 on the passenger train services.

The Deltic Preservation Society Depot will also be open throughout the Gala weekend.

A variety of railway society stands and trade stalls, food and drink outlets, a range of children’s activities and historical enactments of Roundhouse characters will complete the celebrations of 152 extraordinary years of this unique railway building.  There will also be a free shuttle bus service from Chesterfield railway station operating on all three days of the Gala.

Tickets are on sale now from www.seetickets.com.  The Gala will be open from 10am to 5pm on each day (last entry at 4pm).  Entry tickets will also be available on the day during the Gala.
