Stephensons Tea and Coffee House introduce “work from home, but away” scheme

With half term fast approaching, Chesterfield tea and coffee house Stephensons are introducing a creative new idea to help those in need of a quiet and productive space to do their work over the holidays and beyond.

Staff there have set up the “working from home, but away” initiative to help those struggling to find the peace and quiet needed to carry out their jobs.

Anyone who books a “working from home, but away” table will receive a hot drink on arrival, breakfast or lunch with a hot or cold drink, and a piece of cake or scone when in need!

All tables in the tea and coffee house are situated near power points and WIFI is available too, meaning customers will have everything required to set up their own workstations.

The prices for half term are as follows…

  • Breakfast sessions from 9.30 – 11.30, £11.95
  • Lunch sessions from 12.00 -2.00, £13.95.

In addition, dietary requirements such as vegetarian, vegan, dairy free and gluten free will all be catered for.

Stephensons Tea and Coffee House owner, Claire Wood said: “We are constantly trying to think of new ways that not only help our business, but also support the people of Chesterfield.

“If you are working at home, it is not always easy to be totally motivated and focused, and there could be distractions, particularly during half term. I also think, for our emotional well-being, a change of environment, with high quality food and drink, in a safe environment is a well deserved treat.”

Destination Chesterfield celebrates 10 years with message of positivity for the town

Chesterfield could be set to repeat history and, once again, come out of a global recession stronger.

This month 10 years ago, amidst a global financial crisis, a marketing campaign was established to promote Chesterfield to potential investors. Since its launch, it has supported Chesterfield Borough Council and its Economic Growth team in securing more than £1bn of investment into the borough.

To mark the anniversary, Destination Chesterfield was celebrated recently in a special online breakfast event, hosted by Virtual World Studios, virtually attended by more than 40 people.

At the event, future marketing plans were unveiled detailing how the town, as a whole, can come back stronger from the Coronavirus pandemic.

At the event it was revealed that community, distinctiveness, sustainability and growth will be core to Destination Chesterfield’s marketing campaigns for the town. Two brand new campaigns – Sustainable Chesterfield and Experience Chesterfield, will also join long-running, successful projects and events, including Made in Chesterfield and Celebrate Chesterfield.

Peter Swallow, who was appointed Chair of Destination Chesterfield when it was established in 2010 said: “I am confident Chesterfield can come back stronger from this pandemic. Ten years ago we were in a recession and Chesterfield Borough Council took the bold move of establishing Destination Chesterfield – sending out the message that the town was ready and open for business.

“Now we have more than £1bn of developments and more on the horizon, including HS2 which is already attracting investors to the town putting us in a strong position coming out of the pandemic.”

Since the Destination Chesterfield campaign was launched, declaring Chesterfield open and ready to do business, the town has attracted more than £1bn of investment, with the borough now home to some of the UK’s largest and exciting regeneration, industrial and leisure schemes at PEAK, Markham Vale and Chesterfield Waterside.

Councillor Tricia Gilby, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, said: “The past few months have been incredibly difficult for many of our local businesses. Rebuilding the local economy is a top priority for Chesterfield Borough Council and together with Destination Chesterfield, we have already implemented a number of financial and promotional measures to help our businesses through these challenging times. Chesterfield residents must follow stricter local rules from Saturday

Residents in Chesterfield are being urged to follow stricter rules coming into force from Saturday 17 October, in a bid to slow the rise in coronavirus cases.

Speaking in the Commons today, Secretary of State for Health, Matt Hancock MP, announced that Chesterfield – along with North East Derbyshire and Erewash – will be put into Tier 2 of the government’s Covid alert system – and will be placed on ‘high’ alert from 12.01am on Saturday.

It follows a review of the local situation by Government, in liaison with the Chesterfield Borough Council and neighbouring North East Derbyshire District Council, Derbyshire County Council and local MPs.

As well as following the continued guidance to wash hands, stay apart and wear a face covering it means:

  • Different households or support bubbles should not mix indoors – at home, someone else’s home, pubs, restaurants, hotels or other hospitality venues, leisure venues or shops
  • When outdoors people should stick to the rule of six, including children.
  • If going on holiday, this should only be with the people they live with or that are in their support bubble
  • Family and friends can provide informal childcare as part of a childcare bubble – the bubble is limited to two households only so that informal childcare is provided by the same carers each time
  • Only visit care homes in exceptional circumstances
    All businesses, leisure facilities and other places which are allowed to open by law can remain open providing they meet Covid-19 secure guidance
  • Pubs, bars restaurants and other hospitality venues close at 10pm – drive-through services, click and collect and delivery services can continue after 10pm
  • You can take part in sport and physical activity outdoors but organised indoor exercise classes are only permitted if it’s possible to avoid mixing with people you don’t live with or share a support bubble with – there are exceptions for children and people with a disability

Cllr Tricia Gilby, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, said: “Nobody wants to see stricter lockdown measures brought in locally but the health and safety of our communities, particularly our most vulnerable, must be our priority.

“We understand that this is a concerning time for our residents, and our business community. But local infection rates are too high and are rising so it is critical that we act now to help stop the spread.

“Each and every one of us has a part to play in controlling the spread of this virus – I urge everyone in Chesterfield to make sure they are familiar with the new restrictions, check their behaviour and make sure they are doing all they can to protect themselves, their families and the communities in which they live and work.”

Derbyshire’s Director of Public Health Dean Wallace, who is leading the county’s response to the outbreak, urged people to follow the tighter ‘lockdown’ rules.

“We all have a duty to do everything it takes to stop the spread of this highly contagious virus.

“The steep rise in the numbers of cases is deeply concerning, although not surprising given Chesterfield and North East are so close to Sheffield, and Erewash borders Nottinghamshire, which are all currently on ‘high’ alert and under extra restrictions. It’s more important than ever that we all work together to beat this.

“I’m really proud of the way Derbyshire communities have supported each other through this epidemic but this isn’t over – we simply can’t afford to take our eye off the ball.

“I realise that these extra restrictions for these areas will be frustrating but they are also necessary as we’re seeing a lot of community transmission.

“I cannot emphasise enough that from Saturday people from different households should not be mixing indoors, unless it is with people who are in their ‘bubble’ and they should stick to the ‘rule of 6’ when outside.

“I know it’s difficult but I’m asking everyone to summon their famous Derbyshire spirit and play their part to keep themselves, their family, friends and colleagues safe.”

Redbrik Half Virtual Events offer medal opportunity for region’s runners

Runners will be taking to streets and parks across the region this weekend (16-18 October) as the 2020 Redbrik Half Marathon Virtual Events take place, offering entrants the opportunity to claim a medal despite ‘real’ event’s cancellation.

Organisers of the Redbrik Half Virtual Events have invited runners across the region to cover the equivalent distance of a Half Marathon, 10km or five miles before then engaging with the event on social media in order to claim a 2020 Redbrik Half medal, after the in-person event was cancelled earlier this year due to Covid-19.

Entrants into the 2020 Redbrik Half Marathon and Five Mile Run who have deferred their entries to the 2021 RedbrikFoundation Chesterfield 10k will receive a medal upon completion of the Virtual Events, as will all those who have entered the 2021 Chesterfield 10k.

Runners can also enter the Virtual Events alone for a one-off fee of £10 by emailing info@chesterfield10k.com.

The event is calling on the local community to come out and support Ashgate Hospicecare and Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, the event partners of the Redbrik Half Marathon. Both charities are due to miss out on huge amounts of funds usually pledged by those running in the Redbrik Half – an event which has raised more than £150,000 for good causes to date.

John Timms, Event Director said: “We’re really looking forward to the Redbrik Half Virtual Events – they represent a great chance for those who have missed out on the 2020 Redbrik Half Marathon experience to still claim a medal.

“It’s a fun but safe way of getting involved with the event, and also a crucial chance to raise funds for brilliant charities such as Ashgate Hospicecare and Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, both of which have missed out on huge amounts of funding due to the cancellation of events because of the pandemic.

“It won’t quite replace the incredible atmosphere of the Redbrik Half Marathon, but it is our chance to give back to those who supported the event since its inception three years ago, and those who have already pledged their support for the RedbrikFoundation Chesterfield 10k.”

Construction begins on Chesterfield’s Glass Yard development

Work has now started on an exciting new development in Chesterfield, which will feature office space, retail units and an artisan food hall.

The Glass Yard will be situated on Sheffield Road, directly opposite the Technique Stadium and is set to bring 50,000 sq.ft (4,645 sq.m.) of commercial space along with a 163 space customer car park.

It has been designed sustainably and ergonomically by developer Blue Deer Ltd. allowing for an open plan, daylight filled environment. Each office will have a minimalist design and will incorporate the latest IT infrastructure.

The development will also be incorporating The Batch House; serving and selling premium artisan food and drink in a relaxed and sustainable environment.

A range of independent catering kitchens will surround a communal indoor and outdoor seating area with welfare spaces and meeting rooms.


The development has been designed to:

  • Create a safe, friendly atmosphere to work, eat and meet in
  • Dog friendly
  • Focus on quality food and drink served and sold in the nicest possible way
  • No single use plastic

Tim Turner, managing director at Blue Deer Ltd. said: “We’ve decided the town and the country wants to get on. Covid 19 is a real nuisance and could be around for sometime, but if we all behave it will be controlled.

Chesterfield celebrates as parks and green spaces win national award

Parks and green spaces across the country are raising their Green Flag Award with pride in a year when millions of people have seen the value of having great quality green spaces on their doorstep.

Among them will be Queen’s Park, Holmebrook Valley Country Park, Poolsbrook Country Park, Eastwood Park and the gardens at Chesterfield and District Crematorium in Chesterfield which are raising a Green Flag Award for the 14th time.

The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for their management across the United Kingdom and around the world.

Queen’s Park, Holmebrook Valley Country Park, Poolsbrook Country Park, Eastwood Park and the gardens at Chesterfield and District Crematorium are some of more than 2,000 sites across the country to collect the award for 2020.

Councillor Jill Mannion-Brunt, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said: “I’m delighted that we have maintained our Green Flag Awards in these brilliant parks and green spaces. This recognition really means a lot to the team who work so hard to maintain our parks and greens spaces. This year has been a very difficult year for our team because of Covid-19 and the huge increase in the number of residents making use of their local green spaces. I hope that we can continue to provide high quality green spaces for all our residents to enjoy.”

Commenting on Chesterfield’s success, Keep Britain Tidy Chief Executive Allison Ogden-Newton OBE said: “This year, more than ever, our parks and green spaces have been a lifeline and we know that millions of people have used them to relax, meet friends, exercise or simply escape for a short time.

“It is testament to the incredible dedication and hard work of parks staff and volunteers that, despite the challenges that went along with record numbers of visitors, Chesterfield Borough Council has achieved the highest international standards in Queen’s Park, Holmebrook Valley Country Park, Poolsbrook Country Park, Eastwood Park and the gardens at Chesterfield and District Crematorium demanded by the Green Flag Award.”

 Hollingwood Hub on the Chesterfield Canal in Staveley has also been awarded a Green Flag for the third time. The Hub is the headquarters of the Chesterfield Canal Trust. 

Jim Bower, who leads the volunteer gardeners, said: “We are delighted to receive this recognition. Lots of us work year-round to make Hollingwood Hub an oasis of peace. Awards are very welcome, but our real satisfaction comes from the many members of the public who tell us how much they love coming here.”

Winners of 2020 Chesterfield High Street Awards to be revealed

Amid the challenging circumstances of a global pandemic, the seventh annual Chesterfield High Street Awards is set to name the very best shops, market stalls, events, apprentices, projects and businesses in the town.

Street magician Steve Faulkner will host the virtual awards ceremony on Wednesday 21 October where 41 finalists will become 15 winners. One of the winners will claim the overall title of Retailer of the Year, sponsored by East Midlands Chamber (Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire).

Although virtual, the awards ceremony will be live with everyone invited to tune in to watch on the night. The event will be streamed from Destination Chesterfield’s website from 7.30pm – 8.30pm.  And everyone registering to watch will receive a 20% discount for Casa Hotel’s new dining at home service.

During the evening guests will also be able to visit a virtual photo booth hosted by Chesterfield Champion, Noonah.  Selfies taken during the event will be brought together in the form of an online mosaic, which will be revealed at the end of the ceremony.

Chesterfield Theatres and Chesterfield Museum receive lifeline grant from Government’s £1.57bn Culture Recovery Fund

Chesterfield Theatres and Chesterfield Museum have been awarded more than £400,000 as part of the Government’s £1.57 billion Culture Recovery Fund (CRF) to help face the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic and to ensure they have a sustainable future; the Culture Secretary has announced today.

A total of 1,385 cultural and creative organisations across the country receiving urgently needed support including a Real Time Live in Chesterfield.   £257 million of investment has been announced today as part of the very first round of the Culture Recovery Fund grants programme being administered by Arts Council England. Further rounds of funding in the cultural and heritage sector are due to be announced over the coming weeks.

The Grade II-listed theatres, the Pomegranate Theatre and The Winding Wheel Theatre, are proudly owned and managed by Chesterfield Borough Council. The theatres have received £249,000 from the Culture Recovery Fund.

The Theatres’ broad range of events, which includes drama, musicals, dance, comedy, concerts, talks and cinema came to an abrupt halt midway through March due to the coronavirus outbreak.

In July, the Theatres reintroduced cinema screenings, followed by live theatre performances in October. The previous closure and the current requirements for events to take place with a reduced seating capacity has been challenging for the venues whose income from ticket sales, bar sales and venue hire are integral to the Theatres’ survival.

The Culture Recovery Fund will ensure the theatres can continue entertaining audiences in the current climate.

Chesterfield Museum tells the story of Chesterfield, from its beginnings as a Roman fort, the expansion of the Market and the Industrial Revolution, which brought ‘Father of the Railways’, George Stephenson, to town. The Museum, which is owned and managed by Chesterfield Borough Council has received £165,000 from the Culture Recovery Fund.

The Museum regularly holds a wide range of events for the whole family to enjoy. It also holds regular special exhibitions that explore different areas of history.

Whilst the Museum has still not reopened since closing in March, the team have continued to create online events and activities to help people connect with the history of Chesterfield.

The Culture Recovery Fund will ensure that the museum can continue to maintain its impressive collection and will be able to reopen when it is safe to do so.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said “This funding is vital to ensuring the future of our historic theatres and museum which are an important part of our town’s cultural identity. Despite the theatres reopening in July we have still faced a number of challenges because of the reduced seating capacity but this funding will ensure we can continue to deliver performances for the people of Chesterfield and help to support the theatre industry. Unfortunately, we are still unable to reopen Chesterfield Museum due to social distancing requirements, but this funding will ensure we can continue to care for our collections and reopen them to the public when it is safe to do so.”

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden said “This funding is a vital boost for the theatres, music venues, museums and cultural organisations that form the soul of our nation. It will protect these special places, save jobs and help the culture sector’s recovery.   These places and projects are cultural beacons the length and breadth of the country. This unprecedented investment in the arts is proof this government is here for culture, with further support to come in the days and weeks ahead so that the culture sector can bounce back strongly.”

Chair, Arts Council England, Sir Nicholas Serota, said “Theatres, museums, galleries, dance companies and music venues bring joy to people and life to our cities, towns and villages. This life-changing funding will save thousands of cultural spaces loved by local communities and international audiences. Further funding is still to be announced and we are working hard to support our sector during these challenging times.”

Fiver Fest comes to Clay Cross

To show the importance of supporting our high streets, Clay Cross businesses are joining over 100 Independent High Streets across the UK, to put on very special £5 offers across two weeks in October, in the Totally Locally Fiver Fest.

Fiver Fest is a free to join campaign, devised and run by Totally Locally, a grass roots High Street organisation that has been helping businesses and High Streets to help themselves since 2010.

This Fiver Fest, Totally Locally is partnering with Visa to encourage even more small business owners to sign up to this celebration of independent high streets. Together, they are also calling on consumers to divert £5 of their weekly spend to support the small businesses in their communities.

Gail Hannan, owner of Cup & Saucer who voluntarily coordinates the campaign in Clay Cross, said “Fiver Fest is now a big part of our promotions for Clay Cross,. The independent shops and businesses are what makes our town special and unique. We appreciate it when our community support us, so these offers are to say thank you for that support, and to show just what great value our local businesses are.”

“If every adult in Clay Cross spent just £5 per week in their local independent shops and businesses, it would mean £2.4 million per year going directly into our local economy. Which can lead to more jobs, a better high street, a stronger economy & a nicer place to live. Makes you think doesn’t it?!”

Fiver Fest has been running successfully in individual towns in the UK and abroad over the past 7 years, but in 2019 the team at Totally locally brought together towns across the country in on big Fiver Fest celebration. 43 towns joined in and he result was phenomenal with reports of new customers, people rediscovering shops they hadn’t been into in years and huge sales of £5 offers. Over then two consecutive Fiver Fests, the number of towns taking part has now reached over 100.

Vicar Lane’s Shop Indie Turns One

Vicar Lane is excited to announce that Shop Indie is turning ‘one’ on Thursday 1st October after a successful first year of trading at the Chesterfield shopping centre.

The independent giftware and home décor store opened at the centre on 1st October 2019, and owners John and Lisa are celebrating the occasion by giving out goodie bags, worth £30, to customers who spend over £20 in store on the day (while stocks last).

The ethos of Shop Indie is to showcase fabulous products from independent makers and designers from across the UK.

The collection includes unique handmade jewellery, stationery, prints & art plus baby & child décor, cards for every occasion and a selection of gifts available to personalise.

Shop Indie is part of a line up of independent shops at Vicar Lane.

Lisa from Shop Indie said: ‘’Joining the Vicar Lane family has been a great step for Shop Indie. We love being able to give the people of Chesterfield the opportunity to discover something a little different on their high street, and we’re excited to celebrate our birthday by rewarding our customers with a goodie bag!’’
