Chesterfield’s Liam Pitchford qualifies to compete in his 3rd Olympic Games

Chesterfield’s Liam Pitchford will compete at his third Olympics as the British Olympic Association (BOA) announces the table tennis squad for Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Pitchford has earned a place in the men’s singles by virtue of his world ranking of No 15 – he is the highest-ranked player not to have already qualified.

The 27-year-old competed in the team events at both London 2012 Olympic Games and Rio 2016 Olympic Games, helping Team GB to reach the quarter-finals in the latter, where they were defeated by the all-conquering Chinese team. He also competed in the singles in Rio, reaching the last 32.

Pitchford said: “Even though it’s been delayed for a year, it still feels amazing to qualify again. It’s going to be my third Olympics and I’m looking forward to it and hopefully I’ll have many more.

“I love being part of Team GB, we don’t get to experience that often, unlike some of the other sports. It’s just an honour, really, to be around so many great athletes and people wanting to achieve the same goals.

“It takes a bit of pressure off knowing you’re part of something that’s massive, and not a lot of people get to say they’re part of it.”

Also representing team GB is Tin-Tin Ho; the first female GB athlete to qualify for an Olympic Games since Atlanta 1996, although Team GB had a host-nation place for London 2012.

The 22-year-old from Paddington is currently a medical student at the University of Nottingham.

Pitchford and Ho have competed as part of the same England team at tournaments around the world for several years, including winning mixed doubles silver at both the 2014 and 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Pitchford added: “I’m really happy for Tin-Tin, and it’s not just for her but it’s good for women’s table tennis in Britain as well.

“It’s a massive boost in her career. She’s obviously performed well at Commonwealth Games and won medals. Hopefully, this will make her confidence go through the roof and that will help her to go out there and perform well.”

Team GB Chef de Mission for the Tokyo Olympic Games, Mark England said: “Congratulations to both Liam and Tin Tin on their selection to Team GB for Tokyo 2020.

“It is great to see Liam back competing at his third Games alongside Tin Tin, who is our first British female athlete to qualify for a Games since Atlanta 1996, a fantastic achievement for both her and the British Table Tennis Federation.”

Simon Mills, Table Tennis Team Leader for Tokyo 2020, added: “Congratulations to both athletes. For Liam to become a three-time Olympian at the age of only 27 is a huge achievement, while Tin-Tin’s qualification is a milestone in the development of the women’s game as well as a personal landmark. We look forward to supporting them to give their best possible performances in Tokyo.”

Chesterfield’s Seb Perez launches British Rally Championship bid

Editorial by Paul Horton

Chesterfield’s Former Porsche Carrera Cup GB ace Seb Perez will make his debut in the British Rally Championship in 2021, driving a Ford Rally Team M-Sport Ford Fiesta Rally2, reports Paul Horton.

Seb, son of two-time BTRDA Rally Championship titleholder Steve Perez will swap his circuit racing campaign for a season in the British Rally Championship after “completing his time” in British national racing and seeking out new opportunities.

“The British Rally Championship was not really something I was thinking about at the end of last year I`ll be totally honest,” says Perez.

“I was trying to continue within my circuit racing career this year but with the challenges of COVID and travel, it’s become very difficult to go abroad at the moment. Coupled with the fact that my European race aspirations for this season didn’t quite go to plan, we had to look elsewhere.”

The 21-year old driver will contest several historic race championships this year but a chance conversation saw him mount a BRC campaign in what is set to be a quieter season on the race circuits.

“We were sat there one evening and the topic of the BRC came up. I gave it a lot more thought and decided that it could be a great challenge. I have always seen British Rally Championship as a fantastic series and seriously competitive. It’s actually something I’ve thought about doing for a few years but never really had the chance’”.

Perez is no stranger to stage events, his career began in the popular Junior 1000 rally series before many outings in both modern and historic machinery over the years. Turning to circuits, he followed the racing pathway and progressed through the TOCA categories with success at every level including the Ginetta Junior and Supercup series as well as the Porsche Carrera Cup GB in which he became a champion.

However, faced with an unusually quiet season, Perez will return to his roots and get behind the wheel of the latest Rally2 machinery from M-Sport .

“I was lucky enough to drive the Fiesta Rally2 when it was first released and managed to do the Grizedale Stages in it in 2019 and it was certainly a great car to drive. Nevertheless, it will be a huge learning curve and there will be a lot to take from it for sure.

“I think Oulton Park will be quite beneficial for me [as the first round] as I know the layout pretty well from my circuit experience and some single venue events there so it will just be a case of combining that all together. From Nicky Grist onwards it will be a little unknown but I`m feeling pretty optimistic about the season ahead”.

Perez will swap from circuit to rally when he make his debut in the championship with his regular co-driver Gary McElhanney on Bank Holiday Monday 31st May 2021 in the Neil Howard Stages Rally at Oulton Park in Cheshire.

New online docuseries follows Stanedge Golf Club owner’s one-woman mission to transform golf

A unique new docuseries telling the remarkable story of one woman’s mission to turnaround a rundown golf club and make it a friendly, accessible and inclusive community venue is now streaming online.

In a first for the golf industry, the fly-on-the-wall documentary, Changing the Business of Golf, follows former Ladies European Tour professional Fame Tate as she breaks with tradition and aims to transform the course and customer experience at Stanedge Golf Club, Derbyshire.

In the first episode, Fame recalls the life-changing decision to acquire the golf course and how she is turning the club into an open, friendly venue at the heart of her local community.

Meanwhile, as the team prepares for a new season, they are faced with the prospect of preparing the golf course for reopening without their head greenkeeper.

“If you’d said to me one day you’ll own a golf club, I’d have probably sat there are laughed,” says Fame, whose playing career was cut short by injury.

“My vision from day one was to break away from the traditional golf club model. It’s about making a place that’s welcoming, affordable, accessible, inclusive.”

Working closely with her greenkeeping team – and revealing how she rolled up her sleeves to get stuck in to groundwork – Fame is investing in a major course upgrade to improve playing conditions.

The series documents day-to-day happenings, including course management work led by head greenkeeper Christian ‘CJ’ Johnson.

“It was a tough task for Fame and everybody involved to get the course back to where it was,” says CJ. “But since then we have really tried to improve it as a team and get it moving forwards.”

Just one year after acquiring the club, Fame faced the potentially catastrophic challenge of the Covid pandemic and enforced lockdown, forcing her and the team to call on their inner reserves of strength and resilience to keep the business afloat.

Will she realise her vision and succeed? The series will follow Fame and her team as she reopens Stanedge Golf Club and takes on the business of golf.

Families set to benefit from new play and fitness facilities in Staveley

Staveley residents are set to benefit from the first improvements to the town as part of the Staveley Town Deal, which sets out ambitious plans to pull in more than £25m worth of funding to the area over the next five years.

Initial funding worth more than £140,000 will be used to invest in new play and fitness facilities at King George V Playing Fields. This will create a fantastic new space for families to create memories together and for residents to exercise in.

The money has been secured thanks to a Chesterfield Borough Council bid to the Government’s Town Deal Accelerator Fund – submitted on behalf of the Staveley Town Deal Board as part of wider plans to regenerate the town.

It follows further investment by the council in the park which saw creation of bowling facilities and a new skate park; together all these improvements will ensure that the park has facilities suitable for every age group.

Ivan Fomin, Chair of the Staveley Town Deal Board, said: “It’s fantastic to see the Town Deal delivering funding for facilities that will directly benefit local residents. These improvements are the kind of grassroots project that I hoped we could deliver as part of the Town Deal. It may not be a high financial cost compared to the total value of the Town Deal, but it will make a massive difference to local families.”

The planned works include a new play area which will have a range of equipment for both juniors and toddlers. It will also aim to encourage imaginative play through its design and features, like play panels.

As well as the play area, a new fitness zone will be created. Within this there will be an outdoor gym area where residents can do more than 200 different types of exercise. It will also feature a multi-use area for basketball and football.

Councillor Jill Mannion Brunt, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “As we’ve all seen over the last year, providing excellent outdoor facilities is important for everyone. They provide a space for the community to socialise and are an important place for young people’s development. They are also becoming more popular as exercise venues.

“We are working closely with our funding partners to help deliver this fantastic new play and fitness space in King George V Playing Fields. I am sure that local residents will create lots of great memories in this space and keep active for many years to come.”

Paul Greenfield, Area Sales Manager for Kompan, said: “Kompan are the UK’s leading outdoor play, sport and fitness provider and we are delighted to have been selected as Chesterfield Borough Council’s partner for this exciting project. We look forward to bringing our fun and exciting play products, and state of the art fitness range to the community of Staveley.”

The work is set to begin in March and will be managed by Chesterfield Borough Council and delivered by Kompan.

The competition begins on Thursday 8 April, with Derbyshire facing Warwickshire, and continues for eight solid weeks prior to the start of the Vitality Blast in June.

“We have a really tough group, with teams like Warwickshire, Nottinghamshire and the champions, Essex, so it will be a challenge, but we’re up for the fight.

“When you play against the best sides, it shows you the standard that you aspire to get to. You can also learn a lot from what they do, but I expect us to be a challenge for any side.”

Perez Back On Track at Paul Ricard

Editorial by Paul Horton

Chesterfield’s race ace Seb Perez is back on track at Circuit Paul Ricard in France this weekend (14-15 Nov).

The 21 year old racer will compete with Swiss based R-Motorsport Team in the highly competitive GT4 European Series alongside his team mate George Gamble from Nottinghamshire.

The team pairing of Perez and Gamble as team mates is not new. The previous years have seen them in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB and before that in Ginetta’s.

He has successfully raced Porsches in the last two seasons. Back in 2018, Perez won the Pro-Am title in the Porsche Carrera Cup Great Britain. Last year the driver he claimed two victories in the Pro class of the one-make series.

Perez was also out in Italy just over three weeks ago where he came second spot in Modena Cento Ore, an historic rally that comprised of road sections and 3 race track tests.

He looks forward to his outing at the 5.8 km Le Castellet circuit near Marseille after his plans to race for the team fell by the wayside after the team pulled out of the championship earkier this year.

The Swiss motorsport outfit of R-Motorsport were to make its GT4 European Series debut this season as they confirmed the expansion of its GT racing programme with Perez and Gamble but paused its activities as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

This weekend’s spotlight will be on both Perez and Gamble bringing their talents and experience to the team behind the wheel of the #762 car.

Both drivers will race in one of R-Motorsport’s Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT4s, taking their first steps in international GT racing. It is more closely based on a standard production car than the GT3 version and is regarded as its ‘little brother’.

A second car will be driven by 2018 GT4 European Series Pro-Am champion Markus Lungstrass and Denmark’s Henrik Lyngbye Pedersen in the #18 Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT4.
Entering into the event is a one-off in preparation to R-Motorsport Teams 2021 GT4 campaign. Knowing that SRO Motorsports Group will run their events according to a strict Covid-19 safety protocol and plans can be put into place already.

Perez commented “ I’m really looking forward to the challenge driving the GT4 Aston Martin Vantage with this vastly experienced R Motorsport team with my regular teammate George Gamble”. He added “I tested the car last week at Silverstone that proved successful”

Perez and Gamble will compete in the Silver Cup category at Paul Ricard, with Pedersen and Lungstrass running in the Am Cup this weekend.

Perez and Gamble will take to the circuit early on Thursday morning for an official test session in the Aston Martin followed by another in the afternoon.

A spectacular night race on the Circuit Paul Ricard will conclude the 2020 GT4 European Series, with the start of the final race of the season scheduled for Saturday evening at 18.45, an hour and a half after sunset.

The first race will start at 11:15 CET on Saturday. Qualifying for the two races will take place after dark on Friday evening, after two free practice sessions at 10:45 and 14:55 on Friday.
