Final chance to have your say on new Local Plan

There is still time for residents and businesses to have their say on the new Chesterfield Borough Local Plan. The online consultation is open until 5pm on Friday, 23rd May.

The Local Plan is a crucial part of the planning process. It sets out how many homes and commercial properties will be built over the next 15 years, and where.

It identifies how sustainable infrastructure can be provided to meet the needs of existing and new residents. This includes school places, GP surgeries, leisure facilities, roads, and green spaces.

The Local Plan will implement updates to the national planning policy. Changes include the new housing targets introduced since the current Local Plan was adopted.

People do not have to respond to every element of the consultation. They can choose to highlight issues important to them.

Councillor Martin Stone, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for climate change, planning and environment, said: “This consultation is an opportunity to share these views with our planning team and potentially have them incorporated.

“Telling us what you think will help create a plan everyone can get behind and that building across the borough is both sustainable and appropriate.”

As well as setting out where development should happen, the Local Plan will include policies to guide the planning process. It also plays a key role in tackling the climate emergency.

Councillor Martin Stone, said: “We aim to become a carbon-neutral borough by 2050. The Local Plan will play a key part in ensuring we can meet this target. Your feedback can help ensure we include policies and identify ways to support nature, improve biodiversity and encourage housing to be more efficient and produce less emissions.”

Luxury salon Feather & Fern brings glamour to Chesterfield town centre

Chesterfield’s newest and largest luxury hair salon, Feather & Fern is officially open, with owners Sara Fern and Kerry Featherstone promising clients ‘a warm and relaxing environment with a touch of glamour’.

Feather & Fern, has opened on Knifesmithgate in Unit 1 at Elder Way, following the agreement of a 10-year lease on the prominent 1,636 sq. ft unit in February.

In just nine weeks, the space has been transformed into a 10-chair hair and beauty salon.

This is the first business for owners Kerry and Sarah. Speaking about their journey to business ownership, Kerry said: “The excitement has overtaken the stress of creating a brand new hair salon. It’s been an incredible, fun journey and we are really excited to be finally open and welcoming clients to the amazing space Sara and I have created.”

Feather & Fern boasts six stylists, a beauty and cosmetics specialist, along with two apprentices.

The opening of Feather & Fern marks another exciting tenant for the former Co-Op department store in Chesterfield town centre which has been transformed into a Premier Inn hotel and eight street level units by Jomast.

Feather & Fern is located in what was the electrical department of the Co-Op located on Knifesmithgate. The business joins HotPod Yoga and Bottle & Thyme as tenants of Chesterfield’s newest leisure quarter.

The opening of Feather & Fern means that all three corner units at Elder Way are now fully occupied. Four street level units remain on Elder Way and just one unit remains available on Knifesmithgate. Developer Jomast reports strong interest in the remaining Knifesmithgate unit.

Welcoming Kerry and Sara to Elder Way, Mark Hill, Jomast’s Commercial Property Director said: “The salon is stunning, and I wish them much success for the future of their new business. Feather & Fern is a fantastic addition to the vibrant community we are building at Elder Way.”

Elder Way continues to go from strength-to-strength since welcoming its first tenant to the street level units last year. Last month, the 92-bed hotel, which is located on the upper floors of the development, was named as the Hotel of the Year by Premier Inn.

Investment continues to be made across Chesterfield town centre including the purchase of the former Marks and Spencers store, the Spread Eagle reopening and infrastructure works in the Market Square.

Iconic Chesterfield department store snapped up by developer

Nottingham-based ALB Group has acquired the former Marks and Spencer department store in one of Chesterfield town centre’s most prominent buildings.

The developer stepped in to make the deal for an undisclosed fee before the 68,000 sq ft premises, comprising two adjacent buildings, was due to be offered at auction, for a guide price of over £3m.

Marks and Spencer vacated the store in High Street, Chesterfield, over two years ago when it relocated to nearby Ravenside Retail Park.

The premises is distributed over five floors and occupies a prime location next door to Primark and opposite Chesterfield’s historic open air market, in Market Place, which has been undergoing a major refurbishment.

ALB Group is currently in advanced negotiations with a major retailer interested in taking up part of the ground floor of the building. The firm is seeking additional tenants for the remaining ground floor commercial space.

The upper floors are expected to be either residential, office space or commercial use pending further consultations with ALB’s architect John Morgan, of Nottingham-based architect Leonard Design.

Arran Bailey, managing director of ALB Group, said: “We’re delighted to have secured the deal to purchase this magnificent property.”

Oliver Marshall, director of FHP Property Consultants, which is marketing the building on behalf of ALB Group, said: “While we are close to securing a major tenant for part of the ground floor of the building, we are seeking additional businesses to take up the remaining space.

“There will be up to 10,000 square feet available, which could be let to a single tenant or carved up as appropriate to sizes ranging from around 3,000 square feet. All interest will be considered, whether it’s from retail businesses, leisure, cafés or restaurants.”

ALB Group, which has gained a reputation over the past few years for regenerating buildings in town and city centres across the UK, recently transformed another large property in Chesterfield town centre just a stone’s throw from the M&S building.

Last year, the developer launched 55 high-spec apartments, built on the upper floors of Burlington House, in Burlington Street, replacing the once run-down vacant office space.

ALB Group has become known for town centre revitalisation through a combination of cheaper, more flexible lease contracts with businesses and bringing the vacant upper storeys of commercial buildings back into use, largely through the creation of much-needed residential units.

The company has transformed high streets in places including Ipswich, Stoke-on-Trent, Derby, Huddersfield and Birkenhead, delivering significantly increased footfall in each of those areas.

ALB Group is known for its regeneration of the Bridlesmith Gate area of Nottingham, where it purchased 14 buildings and has successfully given the once-struggling city centre location a vibe that has been likened to London’s trendy Carnaby Street.

Arran said: “Chesterfield is definitely on the up. Like all town and city centres it has suffered from the increase in online shopping, the cost-of-living crisis and the relocation of larger chains to out-of-town retail parks.

“But the mood is shifting in a positive direction, and we hope to be able to provide a catalyst to that now that we have acquired one of the town’s best-located and most historic buildings.

“We can guarantee that we will help to breathe new life into this area, just like we did with Burlington House.”

East Midlands Mayor calls on partners to make the case for regional investment

Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward, is beginning the countdown to the East Midlands taking centre stage at the UK’s biggest development showcase next month.

Mayor Claire will lead partners from across the East Midlands at the UK Real Estate Investment and Infrastructure Forum (UKREiiF) taking place in Leeds over the three days of 20-22 May, with 15,000 national and international investors and developers expected to attend.

At a dedicated launch event in Nottingham on 7 May, the Mayor will outline her vision and ambition for the East Midlands at UKREiiF and bring partners, businesses and stakeholders together ahead of the three day event later that month.

Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward, said: “UKREiiF is a marketplace for attracting investment into our region. Deals made there can lead to the development of commercial spaces, housing, and infrastructure – creating jobs during construction and beyond.

“This is the biggest opportunity our region has had, since we were created, to showcase the regeneration opportunities our region has to offer. I need businesses, developers and investors in the region to join me in making that case. Doing so together, means we can accelerate plans to revitalise our town centres, brownfield sites, or underused assets – turning them into places people want to live, work and visit.”

Hospice unit reopens after six-month refurb to improve patient experience

A Chesterfield hospice has reopened its outpatient services to patients with a palliative diagnosis after undergoing a six-month refurbishment project to double its capacity.

Work to enhance outpatient services at Ashgate Hospice’s site in Old Brampton, Chesterfield, started on 23 September and was completed in April.

The project has seen the charity’s Day Services area, as well as the main reception, waiting area, clinic rooms and fundraising hub upgraded.

The newly refurbished unit reopened to patients on 8 April and will allow the charity to welcome more people than ever before.

Rooms have also been redecorated and new furnishings were installed throughout, creating a more welcoming and comfortable atmosphere.

The revamped space will allow the hospice to run drop-in sessions, activities, and other programs at the same time, which was not possible in the previous layout.

It will also mean the service can be opened for an additional two days per week, meaning double the number of people will potentially be able to access the unit.

A total of 34 businesses, trusts, and individuals came together to make the refurbishment possible, saving the hospice more than £320,000 through their incredible generosity.

Sarah Kerry, Day Services Manager for Ashgate Hospice, said: “Our aim was clear from the start – by enhancing the space, we wanted to offer specialist palliative care to more people, all while improving the overall experience for patients.

“One of our top priorities was creating an environment that feels like a home away from home for the people we care for and support.

“We wanted our Day Services to feel warm, welcoming, and far removed from any clinical setting, and we’re delighted with how it’s turned out.

“We’re so grateful for the generosity of all the businesses who supported the project. Thanks to them, we can now reach more people in our community with the care they need when they need it most.”

During the refurbishment period, the hospice’s Day Services was temporarily relocated to another building on the hospice site, which also served as the main reception.

Outpatient clinics were held on the hospice’s Inpatient Unit, while phone and video consultations ensured patients continued to receive support.

Chesterfield roofing apprentice celebrates national award win

Gabbi Day, a roofing apprentice from Chesterfield, has been announced as one of three winners of The Nation’s A* Trades Apprentice Award 2025.

The award, run by Markel Direct, the specialist tradespeople insurer, aims to celebrate the outstanding work trades apprentices all over the UK are doing within their workplace, whilst also highlighting the important role apprentices play in the future of the construction industry.

Gabbi faced stiff competition from nominations across the UK and was chosen as a winner by the judging panel of Rob Rees, Divisional Director of Markel Direct, James Wilson, Marketing Manager of Festool, and Robin Clevett, carpenter and host of the Carpentry Show on Fix Radio. Gabbi received a development package consisting of a Festool toolkit and accessories worth £4,000, 24-hour tools cover for a year from Markel Direct worth £294 and a £750 voucher to spend on trades clothing at workwear and tools provider ITS.

Gabbi was nominated by her employer Philip Dalton, managing director of Dalton Roofing, who spoke about his reasons for nominating: “We nominated Gabbi for this award simply because of her enthusiasm. She deserves it, she’s a breath of fresh air, and whoever she works with just says she’s incredible, she’s great. We’ve had excellent reports of her; college have contacted us numerous times and said she’s ahead of others in her class. Gabs has really brought something special, something different.”.

When asked how she felt about winning the award, Gabbi shared: “This development package is going to help me with work a lot, with tools which I am very grateful for. As an apprentice it is quite difficult to know what tools you need, and to go out and buy them yourself.”

The other two winners of the award were Chris Wilson, a carpentry and joinery apprentice from Birmingham, and Ben Mills, a plumbing apprentice from Warwick.

After taking part in the judging panel, Rob Rees commented: “The quality of this year’s nominations was outstanding and, on behalf of the judges, I’d like to thank everyone who took the time to nominate an apprentice. Choosing the three winners was incredibly difficult, as so many nominations illustrated the invaluable contribution that apprentices make to the trades and construction industry. Winning this award is a great achievement for Gabbi, Chris and Ben, and I’d like to congratulate them all on the fantastic achievements in their careers so far.”

New advanced manufacturing and life sciences building takes shape at Chesterfield College

The development of a new advanced manufacturing and life sciences teaching centre in Chesterfield is underway, and on-course to open in early 2026.

Chesterfield College recently welcomed employers and dignitaries from across the local community to sign the steels of its new advanced manufacturing and life sciences building development on Infirmary Road.

In partnership with building contractors, Robertson, visitors were treated to a tour of the development, followed by a spectacular lunch served by hospitality and professional cookery students in the college’s on-site restaurant, Taste.

Chesterfield College Principal and CEO, Julie Richards OBE explains: “After a long time in the planning stages I am absolutely delighted to finally share details of the new Advanced Manufacturing and Life Sciences facility we will be offering to our learning community from 2026. Concentrating on the latest industry skills and technology, with a real focus on vitally important green skills, the facility has been curated in consultation with local employers to ensure it produces a skilled workforce to supply local demand for years to come.

“This build is one of multiple and significant investments we are making to our campus as a result of us successfully securing investment from the government’s Further Education Capital Transformation Fund. Housing cutting edge workshops for students across science, engineering, manufacturing, construction and automotive studies, plans for the building were shared with the visiting party.

New Chair of Destination Chesterfield announced at town’s largest business conference

Andrew Byrne, Group Property Development Director of The Devonshire Group, has been officially announced as the new Chair of Destination Chesterfield.

Business leaders and key stakeholders from across the town were updated on Andrew’s election to the role at Celebrate Chesterfield 2025.

Held at the Winding Wheel Theatre, the annual conference brought together the local business community to outline the future of Destination Chesterfield’s promotion of the town.

Andrew will lead the strategic direction of the Destination Chesterfield partnership alongside the Destination Chesterfield board and team, guiding the initiative as it continues to raise the profile of the town as a thriving place to live, work, visit and invest.

His appointment to this voluntary position marks a new chapter in the mission to drive investment, support local businesses, and showcase Chesterfield’s unique identity. The post was previously held for more than a decade by Peter Swallow, Managing Director of Bolsterstone PLC.

Speaking to delegates for the first time as Chair, Andrew expressed his enthusiasm for the role: “I am delighted to step into the role as Chair of Destination Chesterfield, and I’m excited to bring my passion for the local area to continue our progress.

  • Experience Chesterfield – Showcasing the town’s tourism, hospitality, and cultural offerings to attract new businesses to the town centre and high streets, encourage people to spend leisure time locally, and support the visitor economy, while positioning Chesterfield as a gateway to the Peak District National Park.
  • Telling the Chesterfield Story – Strengthening Chesterfield’s brand and reputation through effective storytelling and working alongside the town’s network of Chesterfield Champions to raise the profile of Chesterfield as a contemporary destination. In addition, supporting businesses to grow by signposting support and encouraging innovation.

Chesterfield’s SDE Group has revealed a successful collaboration with John Pye Auctions to enhance their operational efficiency and safety through the implementation of smart storage solutions.

The project involved a comprehensive assessment of existing equipment and procedures, followed by the design and installation of tailored storage systems. The project not only optimised space utilisation but also streamlined workflows, leading to improved productivity and adherence to safety protocols.

The successful transformation within a 12-month period was a testament to the collaborative efforts between SDE Group and John Pye’s team.

Project Consultant, Elliot Watson explained: “When John Pye Chesterfield first approached SDE for a small quantity of shelving in one of their salesrooms, it was clear to see during our first visit that the site had grown that quickly in such a short space of time, what made sense from an operational perspective (and what was required from a H&S point-of-view) were made secondary priorities to coping with the huge volume of sales the business was experiencing.

“That is why it is even more rewarding to see the site completely transformed within 12 months, after the hours put into reviewing all of their existing equipment and operational procedures, several designs and then re-designs, and then finally getting the project to site prior to their peak sales period.
