Active Derbyshire moves to new Chesterfield office

A partnership organisation which aims to get us all moving more has relocated to a new HQ in Chesterfield.

Active Derbyshire has announced its move to the Northern Gateway Enterprise Centre, a modern office development in the heart of our town.

The relocation puts the organisation at the heart of the county, with easy access to the partners and communities it works with.

Active Derbyshire works with a wide range of partners across the county to support and enable people to be active and move more in ways that work for them. The organisation focuses on addressing inequality and making physical activity accessible to everyone.

Chesterfield’s central location offers excellent transport links to all parts of Derbyshire. The new office also sits close to Chesterfield railway station, supporting the organisation’s commitment to active travel and reducing its own carbon footprint.

“We’re thrilled about our move to Chesterfield,” said Stuart Batchelor, Strategic Director for Active Derbyshire. “This location helps us connect better with communities across the county and puts us in an ideal position to support our partners.”

Active Derbyshire is part of Active Partners Trust alongside Active Notts. Together they form one of 42 Active Partnerships working across England to make active lifestyles the norm for everyone.

Fearless Sports expands into prominent new Market Hall unit

A Chesterfield business that began its journey inside the historic Market Hall is marking a major milestone with the opening of a new, larger store on the outside of the building.

Fearless Sports, founded by local entrepreneurs Neil Siddall and Kieran Bolsover, has relocated to Shop 1—just outside the Market Hall and directly in front of the newly refurbished market stalls. The move marks an exciting new chapter for the business, which has gone from strength to strength since opening its doors earlier this year.

Neil explained: “We got the keys at the beginning of April and spent two solid weeks refurbishing the new store—repainting, building our own storage and even renewing all the electrics. It was a big job, but the hard work paid off and we opened just in time for our target date.”

The new location has already had a noticeable impact, with Neil adding: “The difference was instant. We’ve seen a great mix of curious new customers coming in, alongside our regulars who we’ve really enjoyed getting to know. It’s been fantastic to have that continued support while welcoming new faces too.”

The expansion has also allowed Fearless Sports to significantly grow its product range: “Thanks to the bigger space, we’ve been able to add more health supplements, including vitamins, collagen products, and more. We’ve also launched a protein bar where customers can pop in for their daily shake or sample new flavours before buying tubs to take home. And we’ve introduced speciality teas and coffees—with plans to soon add organic milkshakes, smoothies, and healthy food options.”

Neil is optimistic about the future of Chesterfield town centre, particularly as the Market Square regeneration continues to take shape.

“I’m really excited about trading in Chesterfield. The market stall refurb looks fantastic and will definitely attract more visitors. I read recently that visitor numbers are expected to rise above four million this year—that’s brilliant news for everyone in the town.

“Events like the recent 1940s Day are exactly what we need. I’ve never seen the town centre so busy—it was amazing. More events like that will mean more opportunities for local traders, local people, and visitors to all benefit together.”

Chesterfield named in The Guardian’s happiest places to live in Britain

Chesterfield has been named in a list of Britain’s happiest places to live by national newspaper, The Guardian.

It comes after our town retained its spot as the happiest place to live in the East Midlands in the Rightmove Happy at Home index.

The Guardian article highlights Chesterfield’s access to open spaces as one of its major advantages, stating: “Chesterfield sits on the edge of the Peak District and is home to one of the oldest open-air markets in England, as well as historic medieval alleyways, churches, museums and grand old buildings. Its blend of urban and rural access (being just a short journey from both the Peak District national park, and Sheffield and Derby) make it a popular place to live.

“There’s an annual walking festival in May, and plenty of rambling groups to join. But if hiking isn’t your thing, there is an abundance of other outdoor activities – you can try abseiling, canoeing, caving or scrambling.

“When you’ve finished exercising, there’s a strong independent food and drink scene to enjoy. Bottle and Thyme, a family-run restaurant with a focus on ethical and sustainable ingredients, is a big hit locally.

Sun shines on record-breaking Redbrik Foundation Chesterfield 10K

A record turnout of more than 1,400 runners took on the sun-soaked Redbrik Foundation Chesterfield 10K last weekend.

The event on Sunday, 11th May was praised as a great success by organisers, event partners, and participants.

David Archer was the first to cross the 10k finish line with a time of 33:07, with year-on-year female winner, Hayley Gill finishing in a time of 37:38.

The oldest participant in the event was Colin Sharrock aged 79, and Joel Tidmarsh was the youngest at 16.

Theo Anderson and Betsy Smith were the winners of the Pronto Paints Fun Run, which returned for another year and took place within the boundaries of Queen’s Park in tandem with the main event.

8 organisations also took part in the Pronto Paints Wellbeing Challenge, a team entry into the Redbrik Foundation Chesterfield 10K’s weekend of events.

This year’s event saw the Nuzest Chesterfield 3K and 5K Challenge take place on Saturday 10 May. Situated within the boundaries of Queen’s Park, the winner of these events was Amelia Harrison for the 3K and Jamie Cawthorne for the 5K.

The event also helped raise thousands for good causes across the region, with circa £32K pledged for charities including main charity partners – Redbrik Foundation, Ashgate Hospice, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and Cavendish Cancer Care, along with many other charities selected by the runners from across the region.

Following the event, John Timms, Event Director of the Redbrik Foundation Chesterfield 10k said: “We’re absolutely thrilled with the incredible turnout at this year’s event, which has been our most successful to date.

“With record-breaking participation numbers and perfect weather conditions, we witnessed outstanding performances across all races, including our Nuzest 3K and 5K events that took place on the Saturday.

“Since establishing this event in 2020, we have aimed to create a memorable experience that brings the community together while supporting local charities. The atmosphere was amazing, with friends and family lining the entire route to cheer on our participants.

“The success of this event wouldn’t have been possible without our dedicated volunteer marshals, generous sponsors, and participants. We’re also grateful to the residents of Chesterfield for their continued support and understanding regarding the temporary road closures.

“The funds raised will make a significant impact through our charity partners – the Redbrik Foundation, Ashgate Hospice, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, and Cavendish Cancer Care – enabling them to continue their incredible work in our community.”

New Heritage Arts Trail will unlock Chesterfield’s past

Grant funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund will help create a new heritage arts trail across Chesterfield town centre – to allow residents and visitors connect with the town’s history.

‘A Sense of Chesterfield’ has been awarded almost £80,000 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, made possible thanks to National Lottery players. With additional funding from Chesterfield Borough Council’s Animate Chesterfield programme a tactile heritage trail will be created with new heritage information boards, digital content, and public artworks.

Councillor Tricia Gilby, leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, said: “Chesterfield has a rich history, and this project will help bring that to life for both visitors and residents. Thank you to The National Lottery Heritage Fund and National Lottery players for supporting this project because it will help draw visitors in and create new things to see in our town. I look forward to working with a wide range of partners to develop this project and ensure that we can tell the story of Chesterfield in a fun and engaging way.”

There are several organisations that will work together to develop this project, including community groups like the Chesterfield Civic Society, Chesterfield and District Local History Society, Chesterfield Canal Trust and Derbyshire Victoria County History.

Howard Borrell, Chair of Chesterfield and District Civic Society, said: “I am very pleased that funding has been obtained by Beam to develop ‘A sense of Chesterfield’ that will see the creation of a tactile heritage trail with linked information boards, digital content and artwork. It will be great to see work to develop the Chesterfield story get underway. The town has a great history – it just needs conveying innovatively in ways that will connect with both visitors and locals alike.”

Members of the community will also be able to help shape the trail through a series of workshops and visits to schools and community organisations.

The tactile trail will include the creation of new artworks, funded through the Animate Chesterfield programme, to help enhance the trail and make it more fun and engaging for a wider audience.

Animate Chesterfield is a public art programme which will create new artworks and activities for visitors throughout the regeneration programmes happening in both Chesterfield and Staveley.

It is organised by Chesterfield Borough Council and delivered by Beam, a leading cultural development organisation.

Funding for the public art project was secured through planning agreements as part of the council’s percent for art scheme, which was part of the previous Local Plan (and now continues on a voluntary basis), and the funding must be used for the delivery of public art.

New ÂŁ5.4m development delivers 26 affordable homes in Chesterfield

Dozens of affordable properties have been developed in Chesterfield, bringing new life to a previously disused space.

The former unused land off Swaddale Avenue has been transformed into a thriving community of 26 affordable homes. The development has been officially opened by Nottingham Community Housing Association (NCHA) in partnership with MyPad.

The thoughtfully-designed scheme offers a range of homes, including two-bed bungalows, and two and three-bed houses to rent or purchase via shared ownership. The affordable rent homes have been let to people on Chesterfield Borough Council’s housing waiting list, and will be managed by NCHA. All but the final few homes are already occupied.

The homes have been built sensitively and with energy efficiency in mind. Built by MyPad and designed by Player Roberts and Bell Architects, the homes have been given an energy rating of ‘B’.

The new scheme was officially opened with a celebration event to mark the completion of the development and the positive impact it will have on the local community. It was attended by representatives from Chesterfield Borough Council and MyPad.

Councillor Tricia Gilby, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council and member for the Brimington South ward, said: “We are really pleased to see residents moving into their new homes after NCHA completed their development here in Chesterfield.

“These homes provide a range of affordable options for residents and give them the opportunity to either rent a property or get their foot on the housing ladder. The development has also brought a mix of housing types to the area, including sought after bungalows.

“As a council it is one of our main priorities to increase the number of affordable homes in the area and have a strong relationship with housing providers like NCHA who can help us to achieve this.

“I would like to thank NCHA for investing in our borough, our residents and communities, and I look forward to many more successful developments coming to life in the future.”

This ÂŁ5.4 million initiative was made possible through a collaborative funding effort between NCHA and Homes England, which aligns with NCHA’s Strategic Partnership for 2021-2028, aimed at delivering affordable housing across the East Midlands.

Allan Fisher, NCHA’s Director of Development and Sustainability, expressed his enthusiasm for the project. “We’re delighted to be building much-needed affordable homes in Chesterfield, where demand for quality housing continues to grow. These new homes are part of our commitment to invest in the area and build a strong portfolio of affordable, sustainable homes that support local communities.”

The transformation of the site represents a significant step towards addressing the ongoing need for affordable, well managed housing in Chesterfield.

Major milestone in partnership between Banner Jones and Stancliffe Homes

Banner Jones has recently advised on the sale of Stancliffe Homes’ 200th property and supported the acquisition of its eighth residential development site.

Therapy & Lifestyle Clinic Celebrates Success of Newly Qualified Psychotherapists

The Therapy & Lifestyle Clinic (TLC) in Chesterfield is proudly celebrating a significant milestone, as two of its trainee practitioners have officially qualified as psychotherapists and joined the ranks of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

After dedicating two years to intensive training and contributing nearly 300 hours of therapeutic support between them, Sidonie Herring and Daniel Brereton have successfully earned their professional qualifications and are now pursuing full-time careers as integrative psychotherapists within the TLC team.

Sian Spencer Bray, Clinical Director and Lead Psychotherapist at TLC, praised the achievements of the pair: “Watching them grow into the therapists they are today has been such a privilege, and we can’t wait to witness where their careers take them. The feedback they’ve received from clients has already been exceptional—comments like ‘feeling respected, safe, valued and comfortable’ and even ‘feeling a million times better’ than when they first started truly speak to their impact.”

Sidonie Herring expressed her gratitude for the support she received throughout her training at TLC: “I’m so pleased to have achieved my qualification, and even more pleased that I got to do it through TLC. Councillor Barry Dyke set to be sworn in as Chesterfield’s latest Mayor

Councillor Barry Dyke is set to become Chesterfield’s 384th Mayor and will lead a celebration parade on Saturday 17 May.

Councillor Dyke will be sworn in as civic head for the borough at Chesterfield Borough Council’s Annual Council Meeting on Wednesday 14 May.

His wife, Marie Dyke, will take up the role of Mayoress. Councillor Shirley Niblock will be appointed as Deputy Mayor with her husband, Paul Niblock, serving as Deputy Consort.

Chesterfield residents can come and celebrate Chesterfield’s new Mayor at the annual Civic Parade which will take place from 10.15am on Saturday 17 May in the town centre. The parade will include a procession through the town and a service at the Church of St Mary and All Saints (Crooked Spire).

Councillor Barry Dyke said: “I’m honoured to take on this role and look forward to meeting members of our community right across the borough. I can’t wait to get started on fundraising for the three incredible charities that I have chosen to support through this year’s Mayor’s Appeal.”

The Mayor’s Appeal will be raising funds for Poolsbrook Social Welfare Scheme, Chesterfield Royal Hospital Trust Charity, and Staveley Armed Forces and Veterans Appreciation.

The Civic Parade is an opportunity to celebrate the new Mayor. The parade will leave from the Town Hall on Rose Hill at 10.40am and will head through the town centre to the Church of St Mary and All Saints (Crooked Spire) where there will be a service at 11am.  At noon the parade will return to the Town Hall.

There will be several dignitaries from across Derbyshire in attendance at the parade, along with Aldermen and former Mayors of Chesterfield, and groups such as the Royal British Legion and uniformed youth organisations.

Members of the public are welcome to attend the parade and church service, with seats being allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Councillor Barry Dyke and Marie Dyke replace Councillor Jenny Flood and Heather Beardsmore who served as Mayor and Mayoress for the 2024 to 2025 civic year.

Bridge Help welcomes ‘driven and career-focused’ Daisy Wilson to the business development team

Chesterfield-based Bridge Help has further strengthened its Business Development Team with the appointment of Daisy Wilson, an impressively driven and career-focused former private bank Relationship Support Manager.

Ahead of joining Bridge Help as a Business Development Manager, Daisy a Relationship Support Manager at Cater Allen Private Bank, part of Santander Bank following the completion of her degree at Sheffield Hallam University.

She now joins the four-strong, all-female Business Development Manager team led by Head of Sales, Katie Snodden. Daisy’s appointment to the fast-growing short term commercial finance provider, is a further reflection of Bridge Help’s commitment to nurturing talent and promoting diversity in the finance industry.

After joining Santander as a call handler in the fraud team, she was promoted to a Relationship Support Manager role in the private banking division and it was in this role that Daisy discovered her enthusiasm for business development.

“From the moment I heard about the opportunity with Bridge Help, I just knew it was a perfect fit,” said Daisy. “The flexible and family-focused culture at Bridge Help was a huge pull, but it also met my passion for prospecting and being in a sales-driven environment which I discovered I loved during my last role.”

Daisy is now looking forward to making her mark in the bridging sector: “I know this is a fast-paced, challenging role, but I want to prove what’s possible. I’m excited to set myself ambitious targets, exceed them, and help grow the business. I also want to set a great example to my young daughter and show her, that with hard work, anything is achievable.”

Outside work Daisy, who lives in Staveley, leads a busy home life with her daughter, a dog, three rabbits, three guinea pigs, and a horse. An avid equestrian, Daisy is currently preparing for her first show jumping competition.

East Midlands-based civil and structural engineer BSP Consulting has been awarded a place on the Eastern Procurement Development Consultancy Services Framework.

The framework is for services that will be undertaken predominantly for local authorities, housing providers and public sector organisations mainly across Eastern Procurement’s core geographical area – the East of England.

Final chance to have your say on new Local Plan

There is still time for residents and businesses to have their say on the new Chesterfield Borough Local Plan. The online consultation is open until 5pm on Friday, 23rd May.

The Local Plan is a crucial part of the planning process. It sets out how many homes and commercial properties will be built over the next 15 years, and where.

It identifies how sustainable infrastructure can be provided to meet the needs of existing and new residents. This includes school places, GP surgeries, leisure facilities, roads, and green spaces.

The Local Plan will implement updates to the national planning policy. Changes include the new housing targets introduced since the current Local Plan was adopted.

People do not have to respond to every element of the consultation. They can choose to highlight issues important to them.

Councillor Martin Stone, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for climate change, planning and environment, said: “This consultation is an opportunity to share these views with our planning team and potentially have them incorporated.

“Telling us what you think will help create a plan everyone can get behind and that building across the borough is both sustainable and appropriate.”

As well as setting out where development should happen, the Local Plan will include policies to guide the planning process. It also plays a key role in tackling the climate emergency.

Councillor Martin Stone, said: “We aim to become a carbon-neutral borough by 2050. The Local Plan will play a key part in ensuring we can meet this target. Your feedback can help ensure we include policies and identify ways to support nature, improve biodiversity and encourage housing to be more efficient and produce less emissions.”

Chesterfield Champions: “We’re seeing new tenants moving into our town and getting things done”

Chesterfield is improving its standing as an attractive town for businesses and professionals, according to leading figures from the local business community.

At a recent round table hosted by Destination Chesterfield at BHP Accountants, business leaders gathered to discuss the town’s ongoing regeneration, its central location, and why more people and companies are choosing to make Chesterfield their base.

Participants were optimistic about the town’s visible progress and the impact of recent development projects.

Anna Melton, Director at In the Works PR, shared her observations on the town centre’s transformation: “The mix of businesses is changing and we’re seeing more residential development. Independents like Adorn Jewellers continue to do well.

“We’re also seeing more leisure, along with restaurants and bars. Bottle & Thyme moved into Elder Way and then opened a new bar opposite! My Dentist have moved into the town centre, and we’ve also seen Hotpod Yoga move in. So, I think we’re starting to see businesses and consumer habits in the town centre shift.”

Jane Cooper, Partner at Graysons Solicitors, spoke about the changing face of Whittington Moor, with The Glassyard becoming an exciting business hub: “We moved in (to The Glassyard) about 18 months ago. When we arrived, there was just The Batch House and maybe a couple of other businesses.

“Now it’s almost full, and the car park is always busy! When we first moved in, I wondered whether it would fill up, and with what types of businesses. There’s a real mix of businesses there. It has really taken off, and it’s nice to see.”

Progress is still being made on the revitalisation of Chesterfield’s marketplace, with the second phase now underway. The first phase completed in March has already seen bright new stalls, new furniture and paving, and the opening up of the historic town pump. In addition, work to refurbish the historic Stephenson Memorial Hall to create a new theatre, museum and community space is also progressing, with completion expected in 2026.

In Staveley, the ÂŁ25 million Town Deal fund is helping to regenerate the high street, support development in key industries of rail and construction, and create new commercial space to encourage further investment and jobs.

Groundworks are also well underway at the long-awaited PEAK in Unstone, bringing further experiential retail, leisure and educational facilities, a wellness clinic, up to 2,000 hotel rooms and 250 holiday lodges.

Andrew McDaid, Partner at Mitchells Accountants, added: “Major commercial developments take time to complete. People get frustrated and ask, ‘Are we still talking about that?’ But when you can physically see things happening, it’s great! We are now seeing new tenants moving into our town and things getting done.”

Chesterfield’s location in the heart of the country remains a major draw for firms looking to reduce costs and carbon footprints. Dan Molloy, Director at Choice Utility, explained:

“One of the big draws for businesses is the fact that we’re right in the middle of the UK. Having lower distances means lower costs, and a lower carbon footprint.”

The town’s rail connectivity also provides businesses with efficient links to the capital and beyond.

“I also appreciate how close London is to us here,” said Anna Melton. “With the direct rail link, we can be there in two hours. It takes less time to get there than some commuters take to travel into the capital from Kent.”

Chesterfield’s connectivity was also cited as a major advantage in attracting skilled young people to the area.

Nicola O’Sullivan, Director at BHP Accountants said: “We tend to have a mix of apprentices. Some are Chesterfield-based, some are from Matlock or Belper, so many come from other Derbyshire towns and the Peak District to work here. Also some will come from Sheffield or Derby to work here. We advertise locally, but the applicants we get are a mix.”

Anna Melton said: “16- and 17-year-olds tend not to have their own transport yet, so they are reliant on public transport. Chesterfield clearly offers that convenience.

“As well as businesses supporting each other, we do also have to support our young people, whether that is through work experience, careers advice or going into schools. We must keep showing them what is available here because all too often, they think they’ve got to go out to the cities, which is not the case. We certainly have those opportunities here.”

Business leaders agreed that Chesterfield is not only a good place to work, but a great place to live.

Jane Cooper spoke about the personal decision she and her husband made to make Chesterfield home:

“We wanted to stay here because I wanted that geographical separation from work. Also, it was just so much nicer here. It was more like the places we’d come from, the smaller community rather than a bigger city. We wanted the open spaces and countryside, and we could get that here whilst still having all the shops and amenities that Chesterfield offered. It’s a perfect place to live.”

This blend of green space, accessibility, and strong community spirit was echoed by Nicola O’Sullivan:

“We’re expecting in the coming months for a lot more of our staff to work from Chesterfield rather than Sheffield, because they won’t want to pay Sheffield parking prices. Chesterfield is more affordable, so we’re expecting more of an influx of people coming to work here.”
