United Cast Bar welcomes Derbyshire’s High Sheriff

Chesterfield manufacturer, United Cast Bar recently welcomed Derbyshire’s new High Sheriff, Theresa Peltier to the company’s premises.

United Cast Bar is a cast iron specialist, produced in two of Europe’s most prestigious foundries and distributed through the United Cast Bar distribution network.

The United Cast Bar Group of companies employ over 250 people worldwide, and are represented in over 20 countries. The firm prides itself on being the world’s leading and most successful manufacturer and supplier of continuously cast iron.

The tour gave United Cast Bar the opportunity to showcase its offices and production facility, whilst explaining some of the work it does on local skills and community initiatives. It involved all areas from input of raw materials, furnaces, laboratory, production lines, machine shop, dispatch and the offices.

David Beet, Group Marketing Manager at United Cast Bar commented: “It was a great pleasure to welcome Theresa Peltier, Derbyshire’s new High Sheriff to United Cast Bar for a tour of the offices and the factory.

“We discussed our action with the local community including schools, colleges and universities, local suppliers and the environment.

“Throughout the visit, Theresa was keen to meet the staff and talk about their various roles. She met a number of the apprentices and staff during her visit including our MD, James and General Manager, Tony.

New design studio for Chesterfield packaging manufacturer

Chesterfield-based manufacturer, Robinson has invested in a new state-of-the-art design studio.

The CAD design room is run by a team with more than 50 years’ experience in packaging creation. It includes a DYSS X5 machine for sample making technology, a Sumbel desktop gluer and can produce production standard products and samples in small runs.

The specialist design team have the capabilities and knowledge to design premium packaging to meet key sustainability credentials, both internally and for customers with a 24-hour turnaround time for samples.

Robinson is often thinking of creative ways to use packaging – this recently includes experimenting with hybrid packaging. Careful thought goes into the packaging to ensure it maintains a level of premium feel whilst also being suitable and secure for the products in them, for example luxury glass candles and cakes.

Elouise Boam, New Product Development and Quality Manager is delighted with the new facility. She says: “From a customer’s existing brief or free licence to create, we design and produce packaging in our purpose-built studio, using the latest Kasemake software, DYSS X5 sample table and Sumbel Bench top gluing unit to produce production standard samples, prototypes and small to medium production runs.

“We can turn around a brief in 24 hours, and work with industry leading suppliers of print, print finishing, paper, and board to create beautiful packaging.

“We carry out product and transit testing to ensure the quality and integrity of the finished pack meets the customers’ requirements and exceeds expectations.

“Paper based inserts and supports are our speciality with sustainability, re use and cost-effective solutions at the forefront of our creative design ideas.

With 50 years combined experience of design and technical knowledge we create bespoke packaging solutions from Rigid Board, Carton board or a combination of any paper-based material imaginable”.

Robinson were recently awarded FSC ® certification (Licence code: FSC-C186000) for its Paperbox division.

FSC certification ensures that all products produced at Paperbox are sustainable. FSC-managed forests help provide clean air and water by restricting hazardous chemicals and following strict harvesting and forestry practices. Their work also helps ensure a diversity of animals, trees and plants as well as providing safe working conditions for everyone involved.

Chesterfield manufacturer installs new robotic manufacturing plating plant

Engineering supply chain solution provider CBE+ has built the first 6+1 robotic Electroless Nickel Plating (ENP) line in the UK and Europe at its 70,000ft² state-of-the-art manufacturing facility.

This new manufacturing capability will allow the company to undertake a range of innovative projects at its Chesterfield base, including the processing of small, precision-engineered components in high volumes and the ability to deliver high-quality parts at a consistently high standard.

The automated line from Sidasa Engineering will also facilitate a highly repeatable surface treatment process, reducing the time taken to complete and send large orders to customers and significantly increasing CBE+’s Electroless Nickel production capacity, utilising a FANUC robot system.

Chief executive officer, Marie Cooper, says: “This is a significant investment for CBE+ and one that will bring many benefits to the business and our customers. The new plating line reduces the scope for human error by automating dosing control and deposition monitoring and measuring. This results in a consistently high-quality finish on the products we process. Automating these tasks means we can redeploy skilled employees to projects that require higher levels of expertise.”

This is the latest of significant investment in the business. A sum of £4m has been invested over the last few years including a new Wire EDM line in 2021 and merger with Nitec UK at the back end of 2022. The firm has double its turnover during this period, with future growth to £10m forecasted over the next few years.

This investment contributes to CBE+’s commitment to sustainability and innovation. The new nickel-plating line will be linked with the newly commissioned effluent water treatment plant and combined heat and power (CHP) system. The CHP system captures heat generated as a by-product of electrical power generation which is then used to provide heat energy for the surface treatment processes. The effluent plant filters and neutralises all waste chemistry on-site and allows for environmentally safe disposal and recycling.

The new line is currently being tested with plans to be fully operational this June.

The company recently opened its doors to the public, hosting an open day on the 26th April. More than 60 people from the manufacturing and engineering sectors attended the event which featured a tour of the entire facility including the new plating line.

Chesterfield photo and video specialist expands offer for businesses

A Chesterfield photo and video media specialist is expanding his company’s offer to businesses, offering promotion and induction videos to firms.

Frank Fell, owner of Frank Fell Media is looking to help companies showcase their services through the medium of high quality video, supporting them through the entire process from script writing, filming, editing, colour grading, voice overs and delivery of final production.

Induction videos are a helpful tool in getting a messages over in a constant and effective way for a business, while freeing up time for staff involved.

Frank explained how the idea to offer the new service came about: “My background is in engineering and, before becoming a full time videographer and photographer in the travel industry.

“I was employed by Metalbox, at their nearby Sutton-in-Ashfield Plant. The pandemic prevented me from travelling for a couple of years and the company was looking for a video to make their induction process easier, more effective and more concise. They gave me my first opportunity to produce a number of ‘Production and Induction Videos’ at their Sutton Plant and later at their Wisbech Plant.”

Now, Frank is aiming to focus closer to home, as part of his efforts to assist local businesses with their marketing projects: “Chesterfield is my home town. I went to college here and worked in engineering at Dema Glass for over 10 years, so I have an affinity with the place and people.

“To learn about and help promote other businesses by means of video content is very interesting and rewarding. I really enjoy creating content, that becomes the final product, like a moving jigsaw puzzle.”

Frank also believes that as technology improves, services provided by the creative and digital sector will continue to increase in significance: “I believe the local creative and digital sector can have a massive role to play in the overall economy of the town, in an age where quality video production has never been more important.

“Local is the important word here. Being local means that business relations are much easier than dealing with bigger nationwide production companies. My emphasis is developing a product that the customer is highly satisfied with before signing off and continued service through developing ideas or updating videos when necessary.”

Redbrik Estate Agents reports almost 200% increase in Google searches for Chesterfield homes

A Chesterfield estate agent says recent investment in the town is attracting more people to live here.

Data revealed by Redbrik, based on Glumangate in the town centre shows that Google searches for homes in the town have rocketed by 196% over the last year.

The figures come shortly after Chesterfield was named the 2nd best place in the UK to raise a family, thanks to its affordability, access to green spaces and a range of highly-rated schools and education facilities.

Redbrik’s data also shows that a number of people are looking for a move away from the larger cities. It shows more than 200 people in the Sheffield area have begun their search for a move to Chesterfield recently.

Jessica Risorto, Director at Redbrik, said: “It’s great to see so much interest in Chesterfield at the moment and so many people looking to move there as there is so much going on.

“Lots of young people choose to continue living in the city after they finish university as they don’t want to give up their exciting lifestyle, but more people are now realising that moving slightly further away doesn’t mean they have to give up on all the benefits of city living.

“In fact, they can have all those benefits with the advantage of the beautiful Peak District on their doorstep and more square footage for their money.”

Stanedge Golf Club owner awarded PGA Advanced Fellow Professional status

The owner of a picturesque golf club nestled on the outskirts of Chesterfield has been awarded a prestigious status by the world’s leading golf association.

Fame Tate, owner of Stanedge Golf Club says she is ‘elated’ and ‘honoured’ after being awarded PGA Advanced Fellow Professional status, which she successfully gained after submitting her PGA Excel application.

PGA Excel is the Association’s dedicated assessment framework, enabling members to demonstrate their impact, achievements and value to employers, golfers and the wider industry.

This is the latest in a highly successful career for Fame, who previously represented both England and Great Britain & Ireland as an amateur. She also played on the Ladies European Tour for six years, before launching a coaching business and eventually taking over the reigns at Stanedge.

Fame explained: “When the news came through, I was absolutely over the moon – it certainly put a smile on my face.”

“For me both personal and professional development are extremely important – every step of the way I’ve always endeavoured to develop my own skill set and knowledge, with a focus on specialist knowledge, business management and golf growth and development which of course appear heavily within the value blocks of PGA Excel.”

Work begins on new Chesterfield cycle route

Work to put in a cycle lane along Chatsworth Road in Chesterfield will start today (24 May 2023)

Preparatory work will take place until 3 June 2023, and then on 12 and 13 June 2023, before continuing from 19 June 2023. Traffic lights will be needed along the road for most of the time workers are on site, but they will be monitored so that delays are minimised as much as possible.

From 19 June 2023 work will start at the west end of the scheme and move towards the town centre, with work directly outside Brookfield Community School being carried out during the school summer holidays.

The work will be undertaken in coordination with planned surface dressing which will be around 21 June 2023, depending on the weather.

Chatsworth Road is towards the western end of the new cycle and walking route which will take people into the town centre, past the train station and on towards Chesterfield Royal Hospital.

A Derbyshire County Council spokesperson said: “The new walking and cycling route, once completed, will give a real alternative to taking the car for short journeys across Chesterfield, which is for the benefit of everyone who lives, works or visits the town. Fewer car journeys will bring health benefits to the whole town including cleaner air.”

The government has awarded Derbyshire County Council £1.68 million to create the new route. Further work will take place later this year.

Chesterfield manufacturer Robinson creates wedding cake boxes for Betty’s

Robinson Paperbox Packaging has been chosen by iconic bakery Betty’s of Harrogate to produce an elegant range of wedding cake boxes.

The boxes have been designed to protect the cakes, which are manufactured at the Betty’s bakery in Harrogate, North Yorkshire.

Ranging in size from 8 inch to 16 inches in diameter, the packaging had to be strong and robust, so Robinson produced a litho laminated corrugated box and lid. The boxes are finished with an elegant, foiled logo on the lid.

Claire Louise Armitt, packaging technologist for Betty’s says: “It was great to finally get this project over the line, changing the logo from a printed black one to gold foiled has really lifted the packaging for these boxes that contain highly decorated wedding cakes.”

Robinson are involved in several other projects for Betty’s in both confectionery and bakery-based products.

Work progresses on refurbishment of former Chesterfield register office

Internal work has started on Chesterfield’s new centre for talking therapies – the building which formerly housed the Chesterfield Register Office.

Beighton Construction is nine weeks into the refurbishment of the premises on Beetwell Street, for charity Derwent Rural Counselling Service.

Having completed roof works, internal strip out, new damp proofing system, floors, heating and new electrics, a team of contractors is now underway with plastering and decoration, plus installing new toilets and a lift.

The three storey centre, set to open in summer 2023 with an official launch event in September, will include office space, numerous treatment and consulting rooms, meeting rooms and relaxation space to help cope with the increased demand for DRCS services in the area, plus options for businesses to rent rooms and floorspace.

Andrew Holmes, director at Beighton Construction, based in Chesterfield, said: “A new damp proofing system has been installed in the basement, partition walls and plaster repairs have been completed plus a new heating system, and the first phase of decorating is underway.

“The new lift will offer access to all floors for centre users.”

Janette Smeeton, chief executive at DRCS, said: “Progress continues on the site which will be one of the largest talking therapy centres in the county.

“Bringing the building back to community use will create a valuable asset for people and businesses in the region.”

The Beetwell Street hub is part of ambitious plans for DRCS which operates a large team of freelance and employed staff based at seven centres across the county covering the Amber Valley, Erewash, Chesterfield, Buxton, Matlock, Ashbourne, Derby, Swadlincote and the Peak District.

Over the last 30 years, DRCS has become one of the largest third sector provider of counselling services in the region offering help to individuals, via self-referral or via a GP, with common mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, stress and long term conditions through counselling, CBT, guided self-help, and other forms of talking therapy.

In the last eight years, DRCS has been in partnership with Derbyshire Healthcare Foundation Trust to deliver the NHS talking therapies for anxiety and depression service, throughout Derbyshire.
