Free support helps Chesterfield businesses improve efficiencies and growth

Nearly 700 businesses across Derbyshire have already benefitted from free support to improve their energy efficiencies and growth, thanks to the Accelerator Project.

The project, which started last autumn, and funded by UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, is already making a tangible difference to businesses across the county. So far, over 400 businesses have received an hour or more of Business Adviser support which guides them in accessing the most appropriate support, whether it be the raft of initiatives that make up the Accelerator Project, or local authority or national grant funding.

Of the businesses supported so far, there has been almost a 50:50 split of those in urban and rural areas. Some 53 businesses have tapped into growth vouchers of up to £2,000 towards specialist training or consultancy advice and 50 have taken advantage of fully subsidised energy audits.

Of the grants and growth vouchers awarded to participating businesses, it is anticipated that 62 jobs will be created or safeguarded as a result of this support.

One beneficiary of the support has been Images Costumes, based here in Chesterfield.

A designer, manufacturer and retailer of bespoke dancewear and logo uniforms, Images Costumes can make any costume design in any fabric combination for customers throughout the UK and overseas.

Managing Director Michelle Webb is working with Chamber business adviser Peter Lawrence on the Accelerator project to support business growth and future sustainability.

Michelle was referred to the Made Smarter East Midlands digital adaption programme and was successfully awarded an £8,300 grant to purchase a new CAD system, enabling the business to be more competitive and to offer a larger range of designs and sizes.

With this advantage, it will safeguard and create new jobs.  The business also hopes to reduce its energy consumption, reduce costs and improve efficiency through a funded energy audit.

Images Costumes Managing Director Michelle Webb said: “The support we received from the advisers on the grant project was key to the success of the funding application.

“Small businesses like ours don’t have dedicated procurement departments so such expert knowledge and experience was invaluable. In addition, they were able to bring additional areas of support to our attention, such as the energy audit, which we might otherwise have missed. It was exactly what was needed.”

East Midlands Chamber Deputy Chief Executive Diane Beresford said: “We are already seeing the Accelerator’s fully-funded energy audits making a tangible difference to businesses across the county.

“We all know it makes business sense to reduce energy usage, but every business needs a starting point when it comes to understanding their current usage and before they can consider improving their business operations and practices. An energy audit carried out by an expert shows a business exactly what’s needed to reduce costs and provides the evidence needed to apply for a decarbonisation grant.”

Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Clean Growth and Regeneration Councillor Tony King said: “This investment to support businesses in Derbyshire to be greener and more efficient is most welcome and it’s great to hear how local companies are benefitting.

“The Accelerator Project builds on the success of our own Green Entrepreneurs Fund which supported businesses, organisations communities and individuals interested in developing skills in the green economy and investing in green energy and carbon reduction schemes.

“I’d encourage any local business to consider signing up to the Accelerator Project to help reduce their costs as well as their carbon emissions.”

Shop Indie expands to mark 5th anniversary in Chesterfield

A unique independent gift shop has marked five years of trading in Chesterfield town centre by revealing an exciting expansion.

Shop Indie opened its doors on Steeplegate at Vicar Lane Shopping Centre in 2019 to celebrate the work of makers from across the UK.

After creating greetings cards and other gifts themselves for 10 years, owners Lisa & John had met lots of amazingly talented makers both locally and from across the UK.

They made a wide range of gifts including jewellery, prints, enamel pins, chocolate, soaps, candles, fashion accessories, greetings cards and much more.

Since they opened Shop Indie have stocked gifts from over 250 makers across the UK – many of them who create beautiful gifts from their kitchen tables, making each piece by hand to create something truly special. They also have a growing number of local makers from North Derbyshire and Sheffield.

Whilst celebrating 5 years of trading at Vicar Lane, Shop Indie is also in the process of expanding the gift shop upstairs, providing much-needed space for stocking more products created by indie makers. The new space will also provide room for small events, exhibitions and workshops. Lisa and John have also confirmed that they are signing a 5 year renewal on their shop lease, meaning that they will be celebrating many more birthdays to come at Steeplegate.

The pair commented: “Having both grown up in Chesterfield we’re proud to be a part of the wonderful group of independent businesses in the town centre. It is a really supportive group of people which makes running a business here so much easier. The location is lovely too, with Chesterfield being situated right on the doorstep of the Peak District. We have lots of tourists as well as locals who shop with us for products celebrating the local area such as Chesterfield fridge magnets, Peak District postcards and Derbyshire prints.

“We’ve been trading in Chesterfield for 5 years now, and the town centre has such a wide range of independent businesses. Some that have been here for decades, some are newer businesses, but each one bringing something different.

“Over the last 5 years we’ve found that our customers have been very supportive of small independent businesses like ours, but to be able to maintain such a varied selection of businesses it is vital that people in and around Chesterfield use them and support them in any way they can. Whether this is by spending their money with them, or even simply by interacting with their social media and letting others know about them.

Nick Hogan, Destination Chesterfield Board Member added: “It’s truly inspiring to see Shop Indie thriving and expanding after years of success in our town centre.

“Independent shops are the heart and soul of our high streets, offering something unique to both residents and visitors. I encourage everyone to continue supporting these small businesses that are vital to our local community.”

Lisa and John are inviting customers to visit Shop Indie on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th October to celebrate with them. They will be offering all customers who spend £10 to have a go on their spinner for either a discount or a free goody bag.

Chesterfield is home to dozens of unique independent retailers. Plan your shopping trip to our town here.

Bottle & Thyme toasts opening night success at Elder Way

Chesterfield’s award-winning independent bar and restaurant, Bottle & Thyme has made the move to Elder Way. The move has created six new jobs and prompted seven-day opening for the business.

The family-owned and run business has transformed the flagship corner unit of the former Co-op department store on Elder Way into a restaurant, private function room which seats up to 40 people, and bar, with additional outdoor space for dining and drinking.

The new function area, The Glass Room, hosted a wedding on the first night of opening and is already fully booked throughout September.

A 10-year lease on the 3,153 sq ft unit was agreed with Jomast in June. Since then, the frontage and interior of the unit have undergone a complete transformation.

The relocation to Elder Way has tripled the size of the business. The separate bar area has enabled owners Hannah and Gavin Grainger to expand Bottle & Thyme’s wine and cocktail menu. And just a month before opening, the couple welcomed baby Ellis to their family.

Gavin explained: “Because of the size of the unit we have been able to zone it internally which has ensured that it still feels intimate. It looks fantastic. Hannah and I are delighted at how everything has gone. The move has been really well received by our customers. We’ve had lots of bookings for the restaurant and function room. We’ve really hit the ground running.”

The new private function area, known as The Glass Room, caters for functions of up to 30 guests, Hannah explained: “Being located a short walk from the town hall, there is high demand for micro weddings, and this is already showing in the number of booking we have taken for The Glass Room. It’s a lovely space and something which Chesterfield didn’t have.”

Mark Hill, Jomast’s Commercial Property Director said: “We are delighted to welcome Bottle & Thyme to Elder Way. Hannah and Gavin have transformed the flagship corner unit of this iconic building, helping further bring our joint vision to life. Together with neighboring tenants, Premier Inn and Hotpod Yoga, Bottle & Thyme are creating a new leisure and hospitality quarter in the heart of Chesterfield. It is a very exciting time for this iconic site, and we are talking to a number of future potential tenants keen to take advantage of all that the town and the building can offer their businesses.”

Gavin and Hannah now plan to add further to Chesterfield’s food and drink offering. They have retained Bottle & Thyme’s former location on Knifesmithgate. The premises are now undergoing a. transformation into a charcuterie, cheese and wine bar, called Elder, which will open later this year.

The relocation of Bottle & Thyme to Elder Way follows the opening of Hotpod Yoga in Unit 7 in April earlier this year.

Chris Wilkinson, owner of Hotpod Yoga Chesterfield, said: “Everything is going really well with the unit and business. The location is brilliant. We get lots of walk-ins and enquiries from people who are passing. It’s brilliant to welcome another business to the Elder Way. There’s a really supportive business community developing here. We are already working with Bottle & Thyme on events for later in the year.”

Five units now remain available at Elder Way with joint agents WSB Property and FHP, reporting strong interest from a number of operators.

For enquiries or further information about the units, visit www.elderway.co.uk.

Chesterfield to welcome new board games café to town centre

Excitement is building for the opening of Chesterfield’s first ever board game café, which is on track to open in the town centre later this year.

Board & Bean will be a location for people of all ages to enjoy locally sourced food, drink and play games. The venue will also be dog friendly.

Renovations are now taking place at the café – formerly the H&F café and tearooms on New Beetwell Street.

Co-owner of the new venue, John McAssey is opening it alongside two colleagues. He commented: “We have grown up in Chesterfield and love the area. Hopefully we will bring something new and exciting to our town.

“Our games library is growing every day and we expect there to be around 500 games on offer at launch on 1st December 2024. We will have a great variety of games from classic pub games to long spanning role playing games.”

Board & Bean will also host special evening events with a focus on tabletop role-playing games, Blood on the Clocktower, miniature painting and more.

The café will boast hand crafted “proper” board game tables, which people will be able to book online. The business will be using new “Guru” software to help customers in making better gaming choices based on the player count, time available and ease of play.

Owners John, Andy and Clint are aiming to turn Board & Bean into a community hub, bringing gamers in Chesterfield and beyond together, allowing people find new games and link up with others. A membership will also be available, which includes discounted food and drink, table charges and event access. Furthermore, the business is looking to work with other like-minded venues in Chesterfield to provide benefits to members.

Renovations are starting soon to ensure disability access throughout the café. A space which is currently partially covered space twill be turned into more indoor space to allow for two rooms to game and socialise.

Nick Hogan, Destination Chesterfield board member commented: “We are very excited for the upcoming opening of Board & Bean in Chesterfield.

“The venue will add to our town’s leisure offer, providing hours of fun and a locally sourced menu for those who visit.

“I’m positive that Board & Bean will be enjoyed by residents and visitors coming in Chesterfield, adding even more vibrancy to our town and giving people another great place to spend their free time with loved ones.”

Destination Chesterfield has announced the recruitment of eight new board members to strengthen the promotion of Derbyshire’s largest town.

The Destination Chesterfield Board is made up of local businesspeople who volunteer their time to influence the strategic direction of place-making and place marketing for Chesterfield.

Since being founded by Chesterfield Borough Council and local businesses in 2010, Destination Chesterfield has showcased the town as a contemporary destination to work, live, visit and invest.

The partnership works alongside a community of more than 230 businesses, known as Chesterfield Champions, to achieve this.  Board members are representatives from their Chesterfield Champion Companies.

“My involvement, and that of the University of Derby, is to ensure that businesses are given the best support possible to establish themselves, grow and evolve to meet the challenges in the short and long term. This might be through skills provision, apprenticeships and securing talent to grow your business, or it might come through innovative, applied research and consultancy.”

Andrew Byrne, Property Development Director, Devonshire Group

“I’m delighted to be joining the Destination Chesterfield Board. The Devonshire Group has a long-standing relationship with Chesterfield and through our property development activity we are actively investing into the area.

“Working with the Council and Chesterfield College we have partnered in the delivery of the Construction Skills Hub on our housing scheme at Mastin Moor.  Having a skilled workforce is key to the area’s success and I hope to continue to help shape and deliver those skills, to ensure Chesterfield remains a great place in which to invest.”

Staveley Waterside Development gets underway

A transformation is about to begin at Staveley town’s canal basin as part of the Staveley Town Deal, a £25 million government-funded regeneration programme for the area.

A new, 2-storey building is to be constructed adjacent to Staveley Canal, creating an attractive mixed use facility that will support 11 business units for office, retail and workshop use alongside opportunities for food and drink. In short, creating a whole new destination in Staveley for both commerce and visitors.

The project is being managed and funded by a partnership between Derbyshire County Council and the Staveley Town Deal, which is overseen by Chesterfield Borough Council. The Town Deal is providing £3.5 million of the £4.5 million cost of the project with the balance being met by the County Council.

The canal basin will be greatly enhanced by the new development and, hopefully, will encourage more visitors to make recreational use of the canal for walking, cycling and boating. Access to the site will be improved with a new road and footpath and there will be indoor and outdoor dining space. Contractors started work on phase 1 of the project at the end of July. This initial phase is scheduled for completion by the end of April 2025.

This Staveley Waterside project forms part of the wider Markham Vale programme of works, a flagship 85-hectare business park based on the site of the old Markham Colliery.

The programme is a joint venture being delivered jointly with HBD focused on attracting and assisting businesses to support net zero ambitions and helping make Derbyshire a greener and lower carbon place to live, work and visit.

staveley waterside

Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Clean Growth and Regeneration, Councillor Tony King, said: “It’s great to see this highly anticipated new development get underway at Staveley.

“Not only will it bring more life and jobs to the area, it will also draw more visitors to this attractive canal-side environment and encourage greater use of the infrastructure that’s already there.

“We have drawn on our many years of experience from work at Markham Vale and brought it to the Staveley Waterside project to help regenerate the area. It will provide both high-quality business accommodation and a visitor destination that people from near and far can enjoy.”

Ivan Fomin, Chair of the Staveley Town Deal Board, said: “I am thrilled to see this prominent project right by the canal, start on site. This landmark development is a key part of the Town Deal programme as it will help create new jobs and encourage people to explore the historic canal, contributing to our overall goal of ensuring that Staveley is a place where everyone can start, stay, and grow.”

Staveley Waterside is one of 3 projects the county council is leading as part of the Staveley Town Deal which includes 10 projects in total.

Wheels to Work is a project we are leading to help people in Staveley access job and training opportunities by providing bicycles and e-scooters for those with limited transport options. And we are also working with partners on a project to reinstate a railway station in Barrow Hill and create better public transport connections between Staveley, Chesterfield and Sheffield for jobs and training opportunities.

Town centre regeneration work starts on site

Work on the next phase of the multi-million pound regeneration of Chesterfield town centre has officially started on site.

Councillors Tricia Gilby and Kate Sarvent met with Louise Bruynseels a regular market trader and John Allen the Construction Director at contractor Thomas Bow, to see how works had been progressing to the upper section of Market Place during the first week of construction.

The works will see the creation of a new market layout with new stalls and enhancements to paving, seating and lighting. Work will then move on to New Square – to create an attractive and flexible space that will complement the main market and speciality markets, but can also be used to host festivals, events, cultural celebrations, and community gatherings.

The town’s historic cobbles will be lifted, and re-laid and some new paving will also be installed – together this will maintain the historic look but will provide a more level surface throughout the Market Place, making it easier for people with accessibility issues such as wheelchair and mobility scooter users or parents with pushchairs to navigate the market.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “We’re all immensely proud of our town centre and historic market, and we’re investing in its future to help it thrive for generations to come.

“It’s fantastic to see work begin on site, and we all look forward to seeing the improvements take shape over the summer. The town centre is very much open for business, although inevitably there will be some short-term disruption and we thank people for their patience.

“We’re working closely to support our market traders and town centre businesses and will keep people up to date as the project progresses – please sign up to our regular monthly email newsletter and also keep an eye on the council’s social media channels.”

All town centre businesses and market stalls will be open as usual during the regeneration work. Some market traders have temporarily re-located to either the lower half of Market Place, New Square, or other areas of the town centre nearby – but the market will run as usual on Monday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday (and speciality markets as usual on Sundays).

Revitalising the Heart of Chesterfield is an 18-month scheme to improve the look, feel and flow of key public spaces, and revitalise the historic market.

Further phases of works include Rykneld Square which will be transformed to create a green and welcoming space from which to enjoy our much-loved Crooked Spire.

Separately, G F Tomlinson will carry out improvements to Corporation Street to create a new gateway to the refurbished Stephenson Memorial Hall, which houses the Pomegranate Theatre and Chesterfield Museum.

Questions about Revitalisng the Heart of Chesterfield can be submitted to the project team by emailing: RHOCEnquiries@chesterfield.gov.uk

Green Flag number eight for Hollingwood Hub

The Chesterfield Canal Trust is celebrating after receiving a Green Flag Award for Hollingwood Hub. This is the eighth year in a row that it has received this accreditation – the international quality mark for parks and green spaces.

Rod Auton, Trust Secretary, said “We are delighted to receive this award again. It is always good to know that an impartial body recognises the work put in to make the Hub such a tranquil place to visit.

“Obviously our many gardeners deserve much praise, but many other volunteers help to keep the area so pleasant. This includes those who work in the shop, who crew on our tripboat Madeline and who run the watersports hire business. The wonderful staff at Katey’s Coffee Shop provide welcome smiles and delicious cakes to complete your visit.”

Hollingwood Hub is not the only part of the Chesterfield Canal to receive the award. The whole of the eastern section of the canal, 31 miles between Kiveton Park and West Stockwith which is owned and managed by the Canal & River Trust, has also received a Green Flag.

The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.

Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag Award Scheme Manager, Paul Todd MBE, said: “I would like to congratulate everyone involved at Hollingwood Hub on achieving a Green Flag Award.

“It is a vital green space for communities to socialise, enjoy nature, for children to play safely and it provides important opportunities for canal users to improve their physical and mental health.

“We know that the volunteers work tirelessly to ensure that it maintains the high standards of the Green Flag Award, so everyone involved should feel extremely proud of their achievement.

“It is important that our free to use spaces are maintained to the Green Flag Award standard, making them accessible for all members of the community while ensuring the environment is protected.”

Earlier this year a study rated Chesterfield as the best town in the UK for access to green spaces.  Find out more about why Chesterfield is a great place to live at https://www.chesterfield.co.uk/about-chesterfield/living/

New businesses set up shop in Chesterfield Market Hall

Chesterfield’s historic Market Hall has welcomed several new traders as the building in the heart of our town continues to evolve.

The Catch have taken a unit inside selling fresh fish, Blueberry Café is operating the Market Hall Café and Galaxy Travel have taken a unit on the outside of the Market Hall.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centres and visitor economy, said: “It is always a pleasure to be able to welcome businesses into the Market Hall. There is a fantastic variety selling everything including luxury goods, fresh produce, carpets, wool, and so much more. I’d encourage everyone to go and support these great independent businesses in our town.

“The Market Hall is a fantastic place to do business, it sits right in the heart of our town centre, includes a strong community of businesses that work together, with the offer of affordable rents for small businesses to start and to grow.

“With the works planned through our Revitalising the Heart of Chesterfield project a strong future lies ahead for the Market Hall, with an expanded events space and a revitalised outdoor market the Hall will become an even more important focal point in our town.

“I hope all these businesses will settle into their new premises and have a successful future in the town centre.”

The Catch opened in May and offer a wide range of fresh fish prepared by expert fishmongers.

Aashirvad and Manu, the owners of The Catch, said: “We’re excited to share our passion for fish and its health benefits with the community! We will save you the prep work by cutting and cleaning your fish exactly as you like. We offer pre-orders to ensure we can provide exactly what you desire, along with a wide variety of cuts to suit your preference.

“From whole fish for the adventurous cook to convenient pre-portioned options, The Catch is your one-stop shop for fresh, delicious seafood.”

Blueberry Café has been appointed to run the Market Hall Café and they took over the operation of the café in March.

James Shawe, owner of Blueberry Café, said: “We are delighted to be running the café in the Market Hall. Established in 2008, we have carefully grown the business and are always looking for exciting new opportunities.

“Working with Chesterfield Borough Council has given us the opportunity to invest in the café, protect jobs and develop the business to ensure we continue to offer a superb range of products and services for all visitors to Chesterfield.”

Galaxy Travel has recently taken on one of the units on the outside of the Market Hall. A local taxi and travel firm the company provides a service for any occasion including local trips, nights out, minibus hire, or an airport transfer.

David Lewis, owner of Galaxy Travel, said: “We chose to base our local taxi business in Chesterfield town centre, specifically in the vibrant Market Hall, as we believe in supporting and being a part of the thriving community of traders. Our dedication to providing fast, reliable, and helpful taxi service is enriched by the bustling energy and charm of this historic town. We are proud to be a part of Chesterfield’s dynamic business landscape.”

Markan Foods Limited who will be specialising in Nigerian food will also be setting up in the Market Hall very soon.

With the ongoing multi-million pound Revitalising the Heart of Chesterfield, that will transform the look, feel and flow of the town’s key public spaces, now is a fantastic time to set up your business in the Market Hall.

The Market Hall benefits from a central location, offers affordable rents for small businesses and flexible terms for leasing premises.
