‘This February – the month of love – take a moment to feel proud of where you live’

In her February blog post, Destination Chesterfield Board Member, Ann Fomukong-Boden, reflects on the reasons why she loves her town.

On Valentine’s Day, we celebrate love. Not just for our partners, but for all the people, places, and little joys that make life special.

For me, Chesterfield’s character, community, and charm are just three of the reasons why I love where I live.

My old local, the Chesterfield Arms holds a special place in my heart, and I love stopping in there to relax and enjoy the cosiness on a chilly winter’s evening. Of course, their selection of ales certainly helps to warm the soul!

Our town boasts many beautiful green spaces, and you only need travel fifteen minutes from our town centre to arrive at the iconic Peak District National Park. Plenty of spots to create memories with those you love. I personally love a stroll with family and friends. Our little one loves to wear her hiking backpack, and any outdoor activity must be complemented by a delicious pub lunch! Getting outdoors in the fresh air is an excellent way to fall in love with the local area.

Queen’s Park continues to bring a smile to our daughter’s face – with its grassy picnic spots, playgrounds full of laughter, and the iconic choo-choo of Puffin’ Billy, our miniature train.

I also love many of our indoor options for the UK’s rainy days. Chesterfield Escape Rooms, Geeks Headquarters and the new Board & Bean café provide warm spaces to indulge in a hobby and spend quality time together.

But above all, what truly makes Chesterfield? For me, it’s our people.

Our shop owners love a friendly chat with you and go out of their way to help. Neighbours look out for one another. Finally, you can feel the warmth at our community events like the Chesterfield Children’s Festival and the Ashgate Hospice Superhero Walk. I could certainly feel the warmth at my own town centre event this year – Social Fuse, which celebrated social enterprises across our area.

I work alongside many people in our town, and I love to see our businesspeople pour their hearts into their work to create spaces where we can connect, shop, and enjoy life. These hard-working individuals keep our high streets bustling and our community spirit alive.

So, this February – the month of love – take a moment to feel proud of where you live. To soak up our town’s character, community and charm. Whether savouring our food, our family-friendly spaces, or our wonderful people, show a little extra love to our places and faces that make life in our town so meaningful.

Support and funding enables Chesterfield entrepreneur to launch pilates business

An entrepreneur from Chesterfield has fulfilled her dream of opening a new Pilates studio.

Hannah’s House Pilates provides a nurturing space for women to prioritise their mental and physical wellbeing.

The inspiration for founder, Hannah Lunn-Courtnell, came from a deeply personal place. Following her mother’s passing in 2018 after a 20-year battle with cancer, Hannah wanted to create a space where women could focus on self-care and recharge.

“She was my biggest role model—strong, loving, and always present for others,” Hannah said. “She would go to chemotherapy in the morning and then head to work in the afternoon. Looking back, I wish she had allowed herself to slow down and take time for herself. I built this studio with her in mind—as a space for women who put everyone else first. If I can help just one woman leave a class feeling better than when she arrived, I’ll have done my job.”

Hannah’s connection to Chesterfield spans generations, and after her mother’s passing, she decided to move to the town to be closer to her family.

“As a child, I spent holidays visiting Chesterfield and exploring the Peak District,” she explained. “After COVID and losing my mum, I moved here to be closer to my grandparents. Being here gave me precious time with them before they passed and helped me find a sense of self, connection, and purpose. That’s why it felt right to open Hannah’s House Pilates here—a place where others can find moments of calm, connection, and joy.”

Hannah has found Chesterfield to be the ideal location for both personal growth and business. “The community here is so friendly and supportive, with a real sense of pride in shopping locally and supporting small businesses,” she said. “It didn’t feel like starting a competitive business—it felt like joining a welcoming group of people who genuinely care.”

She also praised the town’s unique blend of strong community feel and beautiful natural surroundings. “The Peak District is right on the doorstep, offering inspiration and relaxation whenever it’s needed. Whether it’s the markets, events, or beautiful scenery, there’s always something happening here.”

Hannah’s studio is a purpose-built, 4×3 meter space located in her garden. Designed with comfort and tranquility in mind, it features adjustable lighting to create a calming atmosphere and bifold doors that let in fresh air and natural light, particularly during the warmer months. The studio also uses Fold Reformers, allowing Hannah to transform the space from a reformer studio to a mat Pilates studio with ease.

Hannah's House Pilates 2

Her classes are inclusive and designed to make participants feel at ease, regardless of their fitness level. Sessions begin with grounding exercises and end with affirmations, encouraging attendees to reconnect with themselves.

“I want people to come as they are, wearing whatever makes them feel comfortable,” Hannah said.

In addition to hosting Pilates classes, the studio is available as a rental space for those in training or seeking a place to practice. Hannah also plans to expand her offerings in 2024 to include corporate wellness events, hen parties, and group bookings at external locations.

Making her dream a reality wouldn’t have been possible without support from Vision Derbyshire, a Derbyshire County Council initiative designed to help local start-ups with funding and guidance.

“The financial support allowed me to equip the studio with everything I needed for both reformer and mat Pilates sessions, from the design and equipment to signage and marketing,” Hannah said. “But it wasn’t just the funding—Vision Derbyshire gave me practical guidance and encouragement. Starting a business for the first time can feel overwhelming, but their advice helped me make confident decisions and navigate challenges.”

She credited Sara Martin from Vision Derbyshire for playing a pivotal role in her journey. “Sara helped me see the bigger picture while keeping me grounded. Her support was instrumental in bringing my vision to life.”

Hannah’s story also highlights the wider support available for businesses in the area. Destination Chesterfield in encouraging businesses of all sizes to use its simple referral service, connecting entrepreneurs with tailored support.

Hannah encourages anyone considering starting a business to explore local resources. “If you have an idea but don’t know where to start, reach out to organisations like Vision Derbyshire. They offer so much more than funding—they connect you to mentors, networks, and workshops that build your confidence and knowledge,” she said.

For Hannah, the journey of launching Hannah’s House Pilates has been as much about personal growth as professional achievement. “It’s a privilege to be part of such a vibrant, supportive community and to provide a space where women can focus on themselves.”

Entry opens for awards showcasing young professionals in our region

Future leaders, creatives and apprentices are among East Midlands 18-35s set to be recognised for outstanding ability, potential or achievement in 2025’s Generation Next Awards, now open for applications.

Powered by East Midlands Chamber, Generation Next provides learning and development resources, skills workshops and mentoring for professionals and entrepreneurs in the 18-35 age group. The Generation Next Awards are one of the most important events in the network’s calendar.

Three new award categories have been introduced for 2025: Excellence in Professional Services, Excellence in Sales and Marketing and Communicator of the Year, while entry requirements for established categories have been refined. Following a judging process winners will receive awards at a celebratory event in summer.

Entry for all 12 categories closes on 7th March and submissions can be made by people within the qualifying age group or by a colleague.

Generation Next Lead and East Midlands Chamber Director of Resources Lucy Robinson said: “The day we hit ‘go’ on the Generation Next Awards is the start of an exciting rollercoaster each year! There’s so much young business talent in the East Midlands that deserve to be recognised for hard work, skill or innovative thinking. 18-35’s can enter themselves, or a business or colleague can nominate on their behalf.

“We’re all used to hearing of people awarded after making millions for a company. Generation Next is that same star quality in people – just much earlier in their journey! Whether you or a colleague excel in customer service, are a promising apprentice or have led a project brilliantly, we want to know.

“I’m really excited we have three new awards for 2025 and we’ve revamped the requirements for our longstanding awards too. Winning a Generation Next award isn’t just 5 minutes in the spotlight – you get excellent exposure, and nothing highlights brilliance like an award judged by industry leaders.

“I’m often asked for tips on what makes a winning entry. I’d just say don’t hesitate or overthink as people have often achieved far more than they realise or see in themselves. That’s why businesses can nominate an employee or colleague on their behalf. If you or a colleague stand out in some way, our judges will see that too so don’t hold back. We’d love to see you at the ceremony in summer, which is always great fun, and join in celebrating a Generation Next award win!”

Chesterfield rail firm receives order for environmentally friendly shunting locomotive

A Chesterfield company has received an order for a zero-emission shunting locomotive, following a positive trial period.

Heidelberg Materials, which supplies heavy building materials, has ordered its first zero emission battery shunting locomotive to support internal rail operations at one of the UK’s leading quarry facilities.

The highly innovative 08e battery locomotive will be delivered by Chesterfield-based Positive Traction in the summer of this year and follows two weeks of trials with the 08e prototype in October at Heidelberg Materials’ Whatley Quarry in Somerset, the company’s largest UK quarry.

Heidelberg Materials’ 08e shunter will be upgraded to zero emissions operations by repurposing an existing 60-year-old vehicle from its current operational fleet and removing its carbon-based diesel power source, achieving an immediate reduction in carbon, NOx and particulate tail-pipe emissions. The move to zero emission shunting of thousand tonne trains within the Whatley Quarry site will also offer environmental benefits to nearby communities.

Alistair Gregory, Director of Positive Traction, said: “I’d like to thank the Heidelberg Materials team at Whatley Quarry for inviting us to trial the prototype 08e last year and for their swift move in placing an order for an 08e designed with their specific and demanding requirements in mind. All of us at Positive Traction are hugely excited by Heidelberg Materials’ recognition of the opportunities presented by repurposing existing traction to meet the zero emissions demands of tomorrow’s railway.”

Vincent Pitt, Area General Manager at Heidelberg Material’s UK, said: “Our order for a battery powered 08e shunter is part of Heidelberg’ Materials’ 2030 commitment to reduce scope 3 emissions in delivery transport by 15 per cent from our 2019 baseline and to be fully carbon neutral by 2050.

“We were enormously impressed by the trial of the prototype 08e easily mastering 1,000-tonne aggregate trains on what is a steep and challenging internal quarry network in places. By offering a donor vehicle for conversion by the Positive Traction team we can capitalise on our existing assets and secure the long-term future of these powerful shunting locomotives in a sustainable way.”

Maggie Simpson, Director General of the Rail Freight Group, said: “This is an excellent example of the aggregates sector partnering with an innovative UK SME to deliver zero emission rail movements in a very demanding operational environment. I congratulate both Heidelberg Materials UK and Positive Traction on this announcement and look forward to seeing the 08e in operation later this year.”

Chesterfield’s Crush Design shortlisted for major continental award

An independent design and branding agency based in Chesterfield, which works for brands both close to home and across the globe, has been recognised by the only awards programme in Europe that celebrates the transformative power of rebranding and brand development.

Crush Design has been shortlisted for the Transform Awards Europe 2025, under the category of ‘Best Visual Identity From the Engineering and Manufacturing Sector.’ The nomination comes as a result from the company’s recent re-brand for Ziemann Holvrieka.

The awards recognise excellence in creativity and strategy across the whole brand development process. Categories cover audio branding, brand architecture, brand evolution, creative strategy, implementation, visual identity, and wayfinding. The awards also include a special recognition subsection to identify the most strategic, creative and innovative brand specialists.

Natalie Burkinshaw, Director at Crush said: “As a renowned global player with 15 subsidiaries worldwide, Ziemann Holvrieka has been at the forefront of shaping the beverage industry for over 170 years. Their engineering and manufacturing experience has seen them build breweries for the world’s most esteemed beer brands, along with executing projects across complementary industries worldwide.

Black and white image of female business owner smiling at camera

“But despite their centuries of success, the Ziemann Holvrieka brand was starting to fall behind. Whilst very established, their identity needed to be re-imagined to retain a competitive brand presence and look to the future of brewing engineering.

“Taking on this year-long re-brand project involved each and every one of the Crush team, but the hard work was certainly worth it. Working with the senior management at Ziemann Holvrieka, too, proved seamless, and as project partners that truly understood and trusted our creative thinking both during the development and rollout of the refreshed brand.

“They really were, and still are, a pleasure to work with, as we continue to support them in sustaining their identity across their website, sales collateral and wider creative assets. We look forward to the award results in March!”

Study ranks Chesterfield in the UK’s top 20 greenest towns

Chesterfield has been ranked amongst the 20 greenest towns in the UK, according to a recent study.

Our town took 15th spot on the list compiled by HolidayCars, which studied several criteria including sustainability practices, green spaces available, public transport options, local food production, air quality and pollution levels, and support for local businesses.

Speaking about Chesterfield’s green credentials, the study said: “Found on the edges of the Peak District, Chesterfield is another green area to live in the UK. In fact, in a 2024 study by Eurocell Chesterfield was ranked as the UK’s best town for access to green spaces, with 95% of homes and flats having private outdoor space, with an average size of 249.7m².

“Queen’s Park in Chesterfield has also been a recent recipient of a Green Flag Award, while a brand-new dedicated cycle route has been installed linking the nearby location of Staveley to Markham Vale Business Park, which has encouraged many office workers in the business centre to cycle to work rather than drive.

“Derbyshire County Council recently involved Chesterfield schools in climate action education as part of their curriculum, part of which involves a Climate Leaders Award to inspire children and staff alike.

“The air quality in Chesterfield is also generally considered to be good, and thanks to its close proximity to the Peak District, there are plenty of local escapes into the hills as well as cycling routes throughout the Peaks, helping locals exercise in one of the most beautiful areas of the country.”

Ryan Wilkes, Destination Chesterfield Board Member celebrated the news, commenting: “I’m proud to see Chesterfield listed as one of the UK’s greenest towns.

“Our town boasts a plethora of picturesque outdoor spaces for people to enjoy and of course sits alongside the world-famous Peak District National Park.

“Many of our organisations are also working to become greener and implement sustainability practices, with green growth across the East Midlands region three times higher than it was in 2015.

“Our central location and excellent public transport links also help to ensure Chesterfield offers an excellent quality of life for its residents.”

Long-awaited PEAK gateway resort breaks ground

The long-awaited PEAK gateway resort situated on the eastern boundary of the Peak District has broken ground. Phase One is scheduled to open to visitors 2027/8.

Consented on 283 acres (114 hectares) of reclaimed former opencast land, PEAK proposes the UK’s first purpose built national park gateway ‘resort town’.

PEAK Gateway will offer visitors world class facilities and services as a base from which to access the trails and attractions of the 550 square mile National Park. Similar to a ski resort, PEAK Gateway has visitor mobility at its heart. PEAK’s mobility system will link up the trails and country lanes of the Peak District without the need for a car and help establish the area as the largest integrated off and on road cycling and hiking region in the UK.

Planning approvals totalling 1.8mft2 (168,000m2) have been granted to facilitate a multi-branded mixed use development available to both day and stay visitors. The approvals offer extensive experiential retail, a wide range of leisure and educational facilities, a wellness clinic with operating theatres, 2,850 car parking spaces and up to 2,000 hotel rooms and 250 holiday lodges. The development has consent for its own energy park.

PEAK Gateway will be delivered by way of an incremental and phased ground leasing strategy. Heads of terms have already been agreed for the first two anchor plots with Colliers acting as Real Estate Adviser and leasing agents for Birchall Properties, the land owner. Phase One represents in the region of 30% of the consented development and is scheduled to open 2027/8.

Fully implemented PEAK has the potential to achieve a development value of over £1billion and sustain thousands of jobs. Around 70% of the reclaimed estate will be set aside for continued biodiversity gains as well as offer nature connectivity to encourage people’s engagement and delight in nature.

Sheffield City Region granted £2.85m for the construction of the now completed resort public highway access from A61 interchange at Sheepbridge and the new public rights of way around surrounding the resort estate.

The commencement of land formation works continues the delivery of the outcomes promised by the grant. Booths Group https://theboothgroup.co.uk/ have been appointed lead contractor for the land formation activity.

Councillor Tricia Gilby, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council and Acting Chair of Destination Chesterfield, said: “PEAK offers an opportunity to use formerly open cast land in a way that supports nature but also creates new opportunities for our residents and increases the number of visitors coming to Chesterfield. It is great to see work starting on site and I look forward to seeing the development progress.”

Scott Knowles CEO of the East Midlands Chamber of Commerce said: “PEAK’s gateway manifesto provides the opportunity for regional businesses to participate in the construction and operation of a world class ESG exemplar enterprise celebrating and making available the cultural and natural assets of our region.”

Jo Dilley Managing Director Visit Peak District and Derbyshire said: “The PEAK Gateway development, is a transformative project that will redefine the visitor experience in the Peak District. With the introduction of high quality serviced hotels, we will be able to cater to more groups and international visitors, offering world-class accommodations and amenities. The sustainable transport solution at the heart of PEAK will not only enhance the visitor experience by providing seamless access to the park’s trails and attractions but also significantly reduce car traffic in busy hotspot areas, a change
that will be warmly welcomed by local residents. This development marks a significant step towards a more sustainable and enjoyable future for all who visit and live in and around the Peak District.”

James Shorthouse, Head of Alternative Markets at Colliers Real Estate said “We are delighted to have advised PEAK, and to be delivering exciting new developments bringing visitors and employment to Chesterfield and the East Midlands region of the UK.”

Matthew Booth, Founder of The Booth Group, highlighted the significance of the project, stating: “This is a three year programme for Booth’s and perfectly complements our specialism of regenerative land solutions bringing challenging landscapes back into beneficial use. We are thrilled to be part of the iconic Peak Gateway development, activating the UK’s growth potential through the regeneration of land for local communities and legacy value.”

Rupert Carr of Birchall Properties said: “From the outset PEAK has been a land first business, over 30 years and millions of pounds has been invested in the revival of the former opencast estate and the obtaining of now implementable planning permissions. It’s great to finally be underway and to be involved in a regenerative enterprise capable of activating and sustaining clean growth in the regional visitor economy”.
